Zelda's Depressing Release Schedule (And How to Fix It)

  • Zelda games are glorious, but they release at a PAINFULLY slow rate. Here's how I think Nintendo could pick up the pace a smidge without sacrificing quality.

    *I would be GREATLY disappointed, if there won't be another Zelda game using the BotW engine!*
    Sure, they can enhance the engine and make it even better suited for the Switch (without a Wii U Version in the Background), but the core (like physics and climbing and stuff) should stay more or less the same.

    I have a theory that the next Zelda to be released WILL be a Majora's Mask-style departure, at least as far as theming, setting, and story go. Why?
    Aonuma was the dungeon designer for OoT before he was made the Zelda series's director starting with Majora's Mask. OoT was so hugely successful that Nintendo wanted the team to make an expansion for it, but Aonuma refused - he said he had already created the perfect dungeons for a traditional 3D Zelda, and couldn't make any more without a major rethink of how the game works. So, he made Majora's Mask
    Now we're seeing this repeat with BotW. Rather than the first 3D Zelda, this is the first open world Zelda - and again, it was enormously popular. I predict that Aonuma has already told Nintendo that his team has created the perfect open world Hyrule, and that he will not rehash or expand it. Which means the team will probably create another Majora's Mask - a cobbling together of all their outlandish ideas (e.g. repeating time, transformation masks, a major focus on sidequests) set in a completely different world for you to explore. And who knows, maybe by the time they make the next game they'll *still* feel like they have nothing new to bring to plain old Hyrule, and they'll make the next Wind Waker - a loose adaptation on the classic Zelda formula but with major changes to its core aspects

      Yep, specially because the same group used to make both, the handheld and the big console releases.
      At least the same group made Four Swords Adventures, Twilight Princess, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds.
      They used to release a Zelda game every 2 years, even Phantom Hourglass was released after one year of Twilight Princess.
      Nintendo was recently restructured, so the group that used to make those rushed Zelda games no longer exists.

The only issue I see with that is we've already seen all the memories of what happened, we know exactly how things pan out, and the locations would all remain exactly the same since the plot would have to take place in the same Hyrule. But maybe Nintendo could come up with something.

    I completely agree 1000%. However, I do think BotW is a slightly different case. Seeing as how people have put 100+ or even 200+ hours in the game, if we have another one with the same visuals will cause a little fatigue. Not hugely, but noticeably.

    • @invock
      @invock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

    • @Godforeverilove
      @Godforeverilove 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael. My point is that in this one case (BotW), there will be a little more fatigue compared to other Zelda games. For we are already very saturated to this style. Just from personal experience with my friends and I. We played OoT probably 40-50 hours of thoroughly enjoying ourselves. Then the same or a little less for Majora's Mask. so 80-100ish hours. But we'll play BotW, again, for more than 100 hours. Than to make another 50-100h game with the same guts and visuals will cause a "little" fatigue. Not that I think it's a BIG deal, but you'll notice while playing, while you didn't with OoT and MM. His point is still right even with BotW though.

    • @BlockSquad1000
      @BlockSquad1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Andrew Johnson I can see where you are coming from. I was so blown away by BotW's art style and all everything about it, and then a few weeks later I was just so accustomed to it. Now, I've seen everything in the game and it's sad to admit that I am a little tired of it. It's still an amazing art style, but I miss the feeling of being so blown away by it. BotW is a game that you can only truly experience once.

    • @Atlasfilms08
      @Atlasfilms08 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      True which is why they would need to approach the game from a quirky angle like they did with Majora's mask. Though majora uses many of the same assets at Ocarina it still FEELS very different and that's because it has a completely different tone. If they kind find a far out tone for a sequel they could still use many of the assets, physics, mechanics, etc but have the game feel like a whole new world/game.

    Oh the irony. Arlo got exactly what he asked for and it STILL took Nintendo 6 years to release a follow up (and there’s no guarantee that game will not be delayed… though unlikely). Seriously, if you look at TotK compared to BotW, they obviously used a LOT of the same assets. Guess it doesn’t even matter.

      that's because they split development, 3DS got specific ones, and Wii U got specific ones. Time will tell if they continue splitting, or if that unified development Iwata did back in 2013 means future 3DS only Zeldas now on Switch.

      Though keep in mind all the classic Zelda games are 2D. That was the start of the series. Heck I had so much fun playing Link Between Worlds over and over just because it was a modern 2D Zelda highly resembling the best 2D Zelda ever! But then again, I have spent 300+ hours in Breath of the Wild which is probably more hours than all other 3D Zelda games combined lol. I would absolutely love to have a Breath of the Wild sequel. But, just imagine if they pushed an incredible 2D Zelda adventure on the Switch..... Made it huge in some other land (not Hyrule) with a completely new story and tons of dungeons (yes more than Link to the Past!) ..... Oh boy!!

    I bought my Switch last night off of this old man on my facebook electronics sales group. I met him at Wal-Mart to buy just a Switch for $300. I was astonished when he pulled out the switch, still in its box, carefully repackaged with all the original plastic put back on each part, like new by definition AND the Special Edition Breath of the Wild (dude....this box is bigger than the box for the switch) AND a Pro Controller, carefully repacked into its box. Nervous because I only brought $300 (that I had to scrap together) I told him I can't buy the rest. He smiled and told me it came with it. I asked "Why are you selling this for so cheap? " and informed him of the shortage and all that. He told me he was 78 and had been playing Zelda from the NES era tell now. He told me he had bought all of this to get 1 last run out of the series because he knew he wouldn't live to see the next 1. I thought the story kinda fit here so I shared it.

    Using the same engine is fine, Gamefreak and the Pokémon Company do the same thing as Zelda with the engines. Example, Pokemon Ruby Sapphire had a 3rd version, Emerald using the same engine. Black &a White got a sequel using the same engine, updating some sprites. Pokemon X & Y did it with Omega Ruby Alpha Sapphire, and Sun and Moon will be doing it too with Ultra Sun Ultra Moon. So this proves that the Zelda team can do it too, faster.

    While I don't have a problem reusing art styles, I'm not sure reusing BOTW's would work well. It would be strange to see the exact same game engine used for a very different Zelda game, and If they still go for an open ended world, it would feel too much like BOTW as well.

    • @BlockSquad1000
      @BlockSquad1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      AaronEVX it depends on how they do it. Majora's Mask reused assets but had a vastly different art style. It felt darker, and more oppressive than OoT did thanks to how they coloured and shaded everything. They could do something similar with BotW where it has the same engine but with a different style.

    • @geico105
      @geico105 6 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    • @mrstraiban
      @mrstraiban 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      They could actually reuse the engine without copying all of the art assets. This way they wouldn't have to use all of the time dealing with physics and mechanics issues and the game would still feel fresh especially if the world would be considerably different than the BOTW's world.

    • @Matibalex
      @Matibalex 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      AaronEVX They could reuse it if the game is somewhat connected to Breath of the wild. Just like OoT and MM or the whole Adult timeline. If they made a sequel or prequel to BotW they could reuse the art style .

    It is February 9th, 2022. There was a Nintendo Direct today. No sign of BotW2. It looks like this is going to be the longest wait for a 3D Zelda game ever, coming close to six years or even beyond. There is no reason for this. It reuses the world, it reuses the engine, it reuses the assets. There's no excuse here.

    I only want 1 Zelda (Maybe 2 MAX) per system for each console gen. Their schedule release is all wonky, but I think the rate at which we get them is appropriate. This past gen had 4 remakes, and 3 new titles, plus 1 big spinoff title. I was overwhelmed by it all, to be honest.

      Boy do I have some news for ME! Past-Matt, I'm sorry to say but not only will the sequel to BOTW take 6 years, longer than the gap between Skyward Sword and BOTW, but it will use the same map and have an even weaker story, somehow fumbling Ganondorf as antagonist, reducing him to literally saying the line "peace-loving fools".
      BUT DON'T WORRY! you'll eventually discover the Xenoblade series in 2021 and get to experience a *real* story game with an actually amazing world, and fantastic music. And of course a narrative that will profoundly impact your life and how you go on living it...leaving the Zelda series behind like a fresh young adult leaving behind his old toys and going off to college for new and more meaningful experiences...perhaps still having a place in his heart for those old toys and the memories they hold...even if he's since grown past needing them. Such is the tale of a Zelda fan eventually discovering Xenoblade.

    They should release games on a 3 year basis. If they could do it with majoras mask in one year which is a loved game. They can introduce new ideas without it taking half a decade. That leaves two or even three Zelda games per console, and then they can change up the graphics every generation

    I love these points brought up in your video. Especially when you stated how the sequel could be done by one half of the team, and the other half could be planning the new mechanics and gameplay ideas (which as stated, seem to take up majority of the development time. By the time the mechanics and gameplay have been worked out, the sequel for the former entry would have been released and still have an audience, and the new game would already be in a good development cycle.
    This concept seems so simple and fluid that it’s crazy they haven’t thought of this their selves.

    But 3D Zeldas aren't the only Zelda games. A Link Between Worlds, a fantastic game, came out 2 years after Skyward Sword, and Triforce Heroes came after that. Plus, there was Four Swords and Four Swords Adventure, along with Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. I repsect your opinion, but to me, these Zeldas are just as important as the 3D ones.

      That's a wrong way to see it, if Arlo decides to ignore 2D Zeldas that doesn't mean that Nintendo doesn't spend time and resources working on them. In fact, prior BOW, the same development group of Nintendo was making 2D Zeldas as well as 3D Zeldas, they weren't a different studio in most cases (only with Minish Cap and the Oracles was a different studio), and Zeldas from that studio were being releasing every two years until ALBW, after that Nintendo reorganized.
      It's like saying that "Non numerical entries of Assassin's Creed doesn't count: then they took, 2 years between AC and ACII, 3 years between II and III, 1 year between III and IV, and Ubisoft has been working in AC V for more almost 4 years by now".
      Arlo committed a similar mistake with Mass Effect Andromeda, he assumed that BioWare was working on Mass Effect Andromeda since they finished Mass Effect 3 (he didn't count DA: Inquisition, nor Old Republic, nor the fact that the studio that was making ME: Andromeda wasn't the same that made the previous ME games).

    You do have a point Arlo. Making games in the same art style and having the same mechanics along with new ones sprinkled in would help the games come out faster and make them automatically have amazing gameplay and so on, but there are 2 areas where this idea comes to falter. If the story dosen't count for a sequel, or another Zelda in the same world that isn't necessarily a follow up of the previous story, it makes sense to start new and make a new world. In most of Zelda's cases there wouldn't really be anything linking the next game to the previous one, or any reason for another game to continue in that world. Zelda tends to tie up pretty neatly at the end of each instalment. You could argue that you could make a different game with a different world and story in the same art style with the same mechanics, but most mechanics in each game work specifically for that game and it's story. If you reuse these things, you end up with another game that has to capture the exact same mood as the last game. Let's say you were to make a game in the style of twilight princess, you wouldn't be to make it more lighthearted like the windwaker because of the parts of it that make it cemented into it's own feel. Where in you can't make a very serious windwaker, it'd seem silly. After awhile it'd become kind of dissapointing to see another console release that'd be almost exactly like the previous game. The reason it worked for Majoras Mask is because there were parts in OOT's story and world that weren't entierly finished, it was a great game that seemed incomplete. So Majoras Mask was the way they brought closure to that feeling of emptiness, although not in a very drastic way (we still don't know where Navi is). I think it'd be cool if they did start making sequels to Zelda games, but not every time a new game is being released. It'd work better if every once and awhile we were treated to an expansion of a game if the story or world can expand. When you make a sequel to every game it gets old and takes away the charm of the expansion. Also comment section, when people say 3D Zelda, they mean a Zelda with an X, Y, and Z axis. One where you can actually look up and jump and fall and look around, the game actually has an up and down you can interact with, not the graphics looking better and having 3D characters.
