At a minimum the British people should boycott P&O entirely and they should lose docking privileges. Laws need to be crafted to prevent these shocking practices. They just purchased two new vessels at a cost of 200M so I cannot imagine business was “poor” by any stretch.

Government new about it last Wednesday - they did nothing - But bigger question is, if the company is in such dire straights, why was it only UK workers which got fired.
P&O fury as 'ZERO French staff fired' despite all UK crew being let go with 800 jobs lost
FURY has been sparked over the decision by P&O Ferries to fire "no French staff" despite sacking 800 UK seafarers.

This route is important to our economy in the UK and I believe that the company should be requisitioned and run as a government entity until such time as a buyer can be found.

Don't understand your point. What they did was illigal. They've admitted it was illegal, they knew it and did it anyway. This was a company intent on breaking the law. Not sure why you believe they would have listened to some laws and not others?
It's a bit like asking for an anti stabbing law to try and prevent stabbing, as though that would help stop people stabbing each other. And, although there's existing laws that make stabbing illegal.
🙄UK companys under Blairs government were able to flag ships anywhere in the world and never employed British crews. This has been going on for decades. You can try and blame Boris if you want. But it's misplaced in this case.

@@mrflibble9783 It goes back even further than Blair. Thatcher and the 1980's Tory government supported anti union laws that allowed for an erosion on employment laws and changes in contracts that effected seafarers. They also allowed for seafarers working in the UK to be registered abroad with less rights. Add in the fact that they also saw the decline in British registered ships and had to draft new laws in 1987 to stop the loss of all British registered ships!

@@dannyvine3605 actually the unions required closed shop practices pre thatcher. Which meant the union was effectively the deciding factor as to whether you got hired. They were no better than any other gang using force to get their way. And that had to be stopped. Also unions were taking action without support of members and they were using their hold of industry as a political force repeatedly to hold the country to ransom. Electricity was cut off, refuse piled up on the streets, the dead went unburied. And there was very little way of escaping because everything was state operated there was no opportunity for competition and better ideas to emerge. I don’t think people would ever want to return to waiting six months to have a phone line installed by BT! Or their entire life controlled and operated by state monopolies. And if they did there would be mass defections happening to North Korea. 🤷‍♂️

@Vin H It seems that it was an EU law that meant P&O were only obliged to inform the countries where the ships are flagged. The reason that UK workers were targetted is because our fines for this kind of illegal behaviour are cheaper than France and Netherlands, however, you should note that EU law on the notification and mass fire and hire or redundancies is a lower bar than the UKs. Several EU countries dont even have minimum wage legislation...Italy, Austria, Cyprus, Denmark, Sweden and Finland. So UK employment law and rights in many areas is higher than the EU legislation provides for, but some EU countries own specific laws are harder than the UKs, whilst some are weaker. It certainly isnt the case that Brexit has meant that UK laws are less strong than the basic EU laws.
P&O have already acknowledged their actions are illegal and against UK law, they just priced in the fact that UK fines were likely to be cheaper than France or Netherlands fines.
I think the UK public will avoid P&O in future and that will certainly damage the business. It remains to be seen what the UK public can do to show their disgust at the parent company DP World, but we will see what happens over the Freeport investment.

    • @boomerz2478
      @boomerz2478 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Actually the opposite would be true. And P&O could post their UK profits in any EU Jurisdiction that offered the best tax efficient deal. So actual Brits would have got shafted multiple times by this. Also this was caused by covid and lockdowns and these companies having to absorb massive losses and different rules on having to pay staff furloughs simultaneously. The current structures couldn’t have continued.

Vin H. Which EU law exactly would have prevented this from happening, that has been rescinded by the U.K since it left the EU. I’m a bit confused, as EU law in its entirety, including EU employment law was transposed into U.K law, the day Britain left the European Union.

I would not sail on a P & O vessel crewed by low paid, internationally sourced seafarers.
    Why? Safety.
Where did they train? What Certificates of Competency do they have? Issued by whom? What experience do they have in North Channel winter weather?
    Avoid using P&O!

The unions need to exercise a bit of muscle and brain power as well.
P&O should immediately lose any rights to operate ferry services.
BECAUSE ... imagine what else management/owners will get away with ... if THIS idiocy is not challenged. Bizzare.

The trouble with trade unions in the UK is that they focus on maintaining the status quo,. This can work to protect workers in some industries, but for the most part they seem unable to adapt to changing environments and the reality that businesses often have to change radically to survive

    • @justjames1111

Did you read all that in the daily mail, or was it in the sun? Unions are the only hope that workers have from being disgracefully exploited by some companies, and want a company to thrive obviously in order to safeguard their members incomes and futures. However, and never forget that it's the workers who bring the money in, all the bosses do is direct the money. Unions just want their members to share in the prosperity of a company and just want respect and fair treatment, and unfortunately under the tories workers rights have been stripped away. This is not a 3rd world or developing country, but if we're not prepared to fight for workers then that is exactly what we'll become, like something from Dickens' times. Is that what you want?
