- Don't talk to the press and don't make public your payoff - the terms of a contract being offered by P&O to sacked ferry staff, obtained by Channel 4 News.

P&O's boss today insisted the redundancies were forced by a "unique situation".
But pressure on the chief executive mounted as the prime minister backed calls from the transport secretary for him to quit.

Obviously it's a shocking event, but it's funny how MP's go in immediately studs up and say "Resign!“..... Yet ask them about their PM or their 'honourable' cronies and they go round in circles.
Well Grant Scapps is a disgrace
Grant Shapps resigned as a minister in 2015 following revelations of his involvement with a bullying scandal that had led to a young Conservative Party activist taking their own life. Few would have imagined he could ever be reappointed to cabinet, still less to a more senior role. But in July 2019 Boris Johnson replaced the hapless and incompetent Chris Grayling as Transport Minister with someone even more discredited: Grant Shapps.
Then again, Shapps is no stranger to the art of reinvention. Indeed, he has proved remarkably inventive with his own identity.
In 2012, one of his constituents noticed that, while working as an MP, Shapps had also been peddling get-rich-quick-schemes online under the assumed names ‘Michael Green’ and ‘Sebastian Fox’. The schemes, marketed by Shapps’ company How To Corp under such titles as ‘Stinking Rich 3’, promised unwary punters that they could make large amounts of money very rapidly if they followed ‘Michael Green’s’ instructions. These included the instruction to recruit more punters to sell get-rich-quick schemes to the public - a classic feature of pyramid-selling schemes.
Bozo Boris is trying to do a Biden… getting someone to resign before providing assistance… Ukrainian money talking in local politics..🤬🤬
Eh, not quite. Don't think any MPs have done anything as ridiculously disrespectful and personal as this. This person is borderline a psychopath.
Yep! Boris should resign 1st for his despicable behavior!
@@paulfairbairn1066 I wasn’t saying Johnson is better than Schapps,I was pointing out an utterly immoral man like Johnson surrounds itself with equally immoral ministers
Grant Shaps feigned righteous indignation is pure hypocrisy. Remember he and all his party abstained from voting to outlaw fire and rehire. It's not an issue with any grey areas, if he didn't vote to outlaw it then he condones the practice
Imagine flouting the rules and breaking the law and thinking you'll get away with it. Where do these people get such ideas? Oh, yes! That'll be from our PM and his cronies. Grant Shapps' faux indignation is staggering. For those who say "partygate" didn't matter, this is the outcome when you create such an environment.
Fucking spot on
Absolutely spot on 👊 This should result in a prison sentence. I've just been to lidl and imagine if I decided to not want to pay for my shopping and just walk out? He should do time the Cun+
Here here 😂👍
Partygate will not go away until Johnson is OUT
Why is it that Shapps always seem to have a smirk on his face making it look as if he's laughing at us? Answers on a postcard to......!
If they are unable to successfully run the company legally, they are just broke and have to close it.
If they chose to run illegally - why not join the Mafia or rob a bank.
What happened here is a disgrace to the whole concept of running a business properly.
I had to rob that bank. With that gun and bag of swag I had on me when they arrested me. There was no other choice. I'm not sorry and I would do it again in a heartbeat. For all that free money I hoped to get, obviously. You know, the money? To pay for stuff and that. o, sweet money, how I love you...la de dah
I've always said the same about businesses that claim they can't afford to pay a PROPER living wage - well you don't have a viable business then.
Get a job stacking shelves (for the same minimum wage you're paying - good luck with your energy bills), and let somebody with some business acumen fill your place in the market.
When a government destroys your business model at the stroke of a pen on the flimsiest of reasons no Board is going to find that easy. The accountability lies at government not P&O
ABSOLUTELY 💯 %.
P&O boss paid £160 p/h. His staff paid £1.80 p/h. What an unjust world we have conspired to create.
It said 5.50 hour
@@stevebradnam8053 That was the average. Some poor sods are on £1.80 p/h. I literally got more than that for doing a paper round back in 1982!
@@titteryenot4524 were they forced or soemthing? Seems turbo stupid to agree to work under those terms. Yet, im not turbo stupid. But, they agreed or its slave labour. Did they agree? I think they agreed to it. And signed a contract saying they understood and afggreed. but what do i know.
Yeah he’s got a set of skills which are significantly more desirable than your standard deck hand. You get paid for the value to bring to an organisation. If barely anyone had the skills to sail a boat but everyone had the skills to run a business then guess who would get paid more…?
@@titteryenot4524 its called 21st Century Capitalism.
Hugely hypocritical for the government to say that the P&O boss should resign over the sackings when they've fully endorsed, and are responsible for companies to do these hire and fire processes! They did nothing when British Gas did a few years ago!
So you’re mad because you agree with Boris?
@@user-ug8wx5er1w Not at all, it's merely posturing on the PM's part, as they could have stopped this firing and rehiring practice years ago but didn't.
Boycott P&O!
I agree.
I will sail on them it will be cheap and nice and quiet without virtue signallers on board.

Whilst P&O disgusts me so does Grant Schapps

I think we should boycott P&O BOTH as customers and unions. Rick
The government should revoke their license to operate from British ports
This is what is referred to as ‘cutting of your nose…..’ but dumbass like you don’t seem to understand that if the company goes bankrupt, businesses linked to P&O will also suffer.. but you can’t see that 🤬🤬
Can Boris Johnson REALLY call for anyone but himself to get sacked?
I bet Stena are loving this.
Isn't it breathtaking of Boris to tell the chairman to resign for breaking the law when he broke the law he didn't resign.Talk about two faced.
Of course Tories are calling for him to resign. Otherwise people would be looking at the people should resign....Shapps & Johnson.
800 people lost their job illegally.
Unless this costs P&O significant money and affects their bottom line, they and other companies will just do it again.
Companies will just wait until their CEO is about to leave or retire, and then pull something illegal.
CEO will then move on with a golden handshake.
Politician: I had that law-breaking CEO fired. Look how much I care about workers. Vote for me.
Company: We broke the law and it cost us nothing. Let's donate to that helpful politician
How is that settlement agreement even legal?
It is not legal. Nothing of this is legal.
With his honest answers at the enquiry, and admittance of P&O breaking the laws, I believe he is the lamb to be sacrificed at the altar for his middle eastern owners.
His sacking (already programmed in with suitable compensation) will be a political point for the government and carry on jogging.
Hopefully someone will pick this up and carry on with it. UK laws were broken! UK jobs were abandoned, illegally!
Just because the CEO goes to the altar doesn't alter the fact that the "company" has acted illegally. Therefore the company, not just one person, should be liable.
Boris calling for anyone to resign, is frankly insulting…
It seems to me that with all the bad publicity P&O have attracted to themselves, they could well be putting themselves out of business. I will not use P&O ferries again if I can avoid it and with several other ways to cross the channel, it shouldn’t be hard to keep that promise.
I agree. They have broken their own brand by their outrageous and illegal actions. But they were too greedy and stupid to even see that eventuality happening. P&O Boss never even pretended to feel sorry or guilty about it. I wonder how much severance pay he'll get when he's eventually and inevitably sacked?
Mr David main problem is that Employment law that law always helps to the employer, not the employee. all other tribunal laws also the same not help with employees
Yeah, but by forswearing P&O you only jeopardise the jobs of the ordinary workers, however much you abhor the company practices.
@@titteryenot4524 Are we using the word 'forswear' in its modern formal sense or in its archaic even more formal sense?
@@stephenwalker2924 Huh? 🤔
Bet those new staff are completely inadequate too so customers get inferior service now.
Foreign sailors have been sailing the seven seas since before Brits were painting themselves in woad. Most of the cruise liners have staff from places other than Dover. Nobody claims they are getting inferior service. I have crossed the Channel well over 250 times and would not claim that the service has been anything but ordinary.
Its called Global Britain sourcing work force Globally for the cheapest and brightness
Shapps had talks with the p&o owners in Dubai in November. They said that they were having financial problems. Shapps gave the all clear to do what they had to commercially.
Needless to say they were advised by the HR and legal dirt that they employ.
Or they were advised not to, and fired the dissenters until they found people they could bully into signing it off. Or just plain did it without sign-off...
Ships sink all the time.
Define 'all the time'.
Boris should resign too if he wants to go down that road .party liar
Its pretty obvious that this firm will go under. The question is. Did they know this already?
There are two options : 1) sell the company, and force the buyer to provide the same employment terms for two years(the law)..or
2) Go bankrupt with no benefits to its employees and then buy it out of bankruptcy for pittance and rehire just a fraction of people at lower wages..
… so, any clues..? Yep.. option 2) as followed by most failing businesses 😏
So The P&O boss has to go, but how’s that got to do for the company to make a Uturn on the firing of 800 workers? All of these are just facades, designed to subside the public’s anger. They will drag this until the issue will be forgotten. Up to the point that P&O will return to business as usual.
I'm still waiting for Boris to take legal action against P&O Ferries
I'm still waiting for other legal action involving Boris too
How can Boris call for anyones resignation?
Boris thinks a boss should take responsibility for being a fool lol just another example of one law for him and another law for others
P&O should not be allowed to operate from British ports. If a company can only survive by paying slave wages they do not deserve to survive.
Eeer, so tell me this.. would you rather have ‘foreign’ people living in UK claiming generous handouts, or would you prefer that they worked and the Brits stayed at home and lived on generous unemployment benefits… take your time… 😂😂
Anyone that thinks the Tories are on the side of the workers here hasn't been paying attention.
They are not on the side of the workers in any way, shape or form but this business needs to take responsibility for their callous approach.
@@antoinettenovella1630 Tories have been praying for decades at the chance to water down workers rights and protections. Brexit was all of their Christmases come early in this regatd.
@@hammerqos - And Labour have been the major advocates of replacing British workers with cheap 3rd world labour, throughout the entire country, since the Blair era. Your partisan bullshit is several electoral cycles out of date I'm afraid. If people can be paid £5 per hour to run a ship, then then £5 per hour is as much as it takes to run a company.
Yea… sure…. Don’t give up your day job at McDonald’s… ok?
As an OS/AB and Sea Captain, I sailed under a few flags of convenience, Liberia, Panama, Costa Rica, and Cayman Island. I was always very happy with the conditions and pay. I never saw anything like how P&O has treated their crew.
When is this government going to stop recruitment companies being registered abroad so they can evade taxes and employment laws. Sales, Acquisition and Mergers of British business should only be done if the business is registered in UK. As the P&O company was registered abroad there is nothing UK can do if employees have accepted the companies terms.
THEY CAN STOP THEM WORKING IN BRITAIN. YEA. HOPE THEY GO BUST.!! TERRIBLE WAY TO TREAT STAFF. !!
How can someone admit that he voluntarily broke the law, in public television, and say that it would do it again, and not go straight to jail. Can anyone, except a member of the present government that would come up with something like "leveling" or some other sort of bs, explain how is this possible or admissible.
It's the new world order, it's not what you know, it's who you know.
If O.J can get away with murder most foul, anything can be made to happen - if you've got the right friends and the proper connections. Just keep an eye out to see how large the redundancy payout is when the P&O boss gets canned.
@@peterbaker3429 - It's not what you know OR who you know... it's what you know ABOUT who you know
it's not that kind of crime, breaking the law doesn't result in you going to prison most if the time
@@iwilltouchyourtoes - And, crucially, not that kind of criminal either. We have too few prisons with Jeffrey Archer suites, and too few butlers and maids to staff those that do have them.

If you are on a low wage and someone offers you £15,000 you will take it no matter what a union rep says.
You have to realise it's not his decision. It's the owner, DP World, who is bleeding P&O dry, forcing their hand.

Ever taking holidays with these terrible

Why should he get the chance to cut and run with an enormous pay-off. He should stay and be forced to implement whatever changes are needed. Then if there is no P & O left he should be fired for breaking the law and face whatever punishment is due from the Court.
Hey boris, we haven't foegotten about those parties! Imagine if it were us, we'd be in jail!
I will not be using this cruise service ever again due to this action.
What cruise service does this company offer pray ?
How about fixing the law loopholes instead of reactionary begging on a case by case basis!
This is so classically British, the companies capital being paid to “ high level “ executives whilst their ships are deemed unsafe, comical.
Johnson has no back bone and he repeatedly shows that fact .
So Boris backs calls for action......but then, absolutely true to form does sweet FA!
I understand that the firm had to udapt to reality but the way done was shocking,no respect whatsoever for the workers.Dont supposed this British Company to create jobs for British people?😕
It's not a British Company anymore
Bozo calls for CEO to resign... and become a tory MP he seems to have all the desirable qualities.
Well it’s only what he is doing to public with rising bills, NI, and food so people can’t live. He has no room to talk
Just put him behind bars, dont need legal consult
Ah, so he calls for the P & O boss to resign but won't resign himself when calls for his resignation were made.
Very typical.
Why is such trash tolerated?
Johnson and the minister for works and pensions would have been fully informed of the situation during his oil begging trip last week on behalf of the eu and Brandon :) Boris is a Quisling and a danger to UK independence and the well being of the four nations equally ?

Can he call for his own resignation, please?
As an ex-seaman, the P&o have a bad habit using foreign seamen.
BJ should take his own advice he’s honestly laughable
The boss resigning isn't going to help.
They are incompetent! How on earth do they think they can recover from this!
The leader of an organisation should resign if their organisation does something illegal? What a novel concept! I’m sure I’ve not heard that talked about in relation to anyone else in this story 😂

By the way whatever happened to the infamous Met Police investigation and report it seems to have vanished and been forgotten since the Ukraine invasion? But I won't won't forget Boris! 😤

This man should not be in charge of employees. As a tax payer I don't want employers from the 1800s.
That doesn't help the 800 people that have been sacked ! Those managers will be getting a huge payout as no doubt it was previously planned!
P&O should be banned from every port in the UK
Martyn Gray, excellent speaker. Good luck to you and all impacted P&O staff
picket P and O so they can not operate , to be totally blunt the company does not deserve to survive that would be the price for doing something so despicable
It's his business so if he feels the need to sack these people then it's his choice, I would do the same if my staff need to be gone then gone they shall be 😉😘
I hope BBC and C4 news will keep track of what the government actually do to prevent this happening again. Not just words, but changes to law. And meaningful sanctions against P&O
Boycott P&O ferries
If its illegal why is he and the people responsible not in jail or heavily fined?
they also need to make sure that when made redundant that job no longer exists
He will still get a HUGE PAYOUT so no real punishment
mark my words a tragedy is on the cards with this company which will be made worse by staff lack of training.
Happy to boycott P&O 👍 this is no way to treat hard working staff

Borris back calls for P & Q bosses to resign over sakings. When is Boris going to resign after party gate?
What P & Q did is discussing and they need to pay but when Boris and his minions parted away as most of us suffer, people died alone with loved ones not even able to go to there funerals, that's just evil.
And they are still hurting the poorest and more venerable in UK, but still putting more money in their pockets and their rich friends.
