  • The politician, who campaigned for justice for wrongly convicted sub-postmasters, says the secret recording of a meeting in 2013 attended by Paula Vennells - exclusively revealed by ITV News last week - answers a question campaigners have been asking for years about what she knew and when.
On July 2 2013, in a meeting with independent investigators Ian Henderson and Ron Warmington from Second Sight, Ms Vennells was made aware of allegations that Sub-postmaster branch accounts could be accessed remotely.
This is something the Post Office had denied for years as hundreds of Sub-postmasters were convicted.

The damage done by Revd. Vennells and her cohorts is more than appalling and a stain on the CofE's reputation, diminishing the many good works it does, such as setting up Food Banks, opening centres for the homeless plus many other much needed community services addresssing ills in society, mostly carried out by the laity. Church Leadership requires of itself to demonstrate the highest moral and ethical values to all its followers at all times. Let us hope it will explain its stance in this matter.

There are wider issues. The PO scandal is one of many that show the British judicial system is broken and not fit for purpose; this applies to both criminal and civil procedures. Judges decisions are not independent but highly bias in favour of government bodies and corporates. Most judges are also barristers and they will judge in favour of their colleagues. My understanding is that Horizon were accessing their systems overnight to cover up faults in their software. Unfortunately, to avoid criticism, the Sub Post Masters were not told. To avoid being automatically locked out of the system for the following days and lose income and have suspicions directed at them, the SPMs moved figures around, which many later admitted to, to try and balance the shortfalls. The shortfalls and discrepancies were the result of the faulty Horizon system and there was no actual disappearing monies. There were three scandals (at least). Firstly the faulty software that was covered up, the covert but known regular changing of Post Office takings, and the final cover up of what was taking place by senior management et al that led to miscarriages of justice and wrongful convictions.
