      I love both. F1 gives you a real appreciation for racing tech, and there are marked similarities between it and Indy road/street courses. Indy gives you a great appreciation for driving dynamics and psychology. You'll notice more about how the F1 drivers manage their machines from watching Indy, and you'll notice more about how the spec of the Indy series affects choices drivers and teams make from watching F1. They compliment one another fantastically.

Make sure you head to the IndyCar TH-cam channel also. That way you can catch a few races from the past. Definitely watch the 94' and 95' Michigan 500 races.

    Long time IndyCar fan (going back to the 70's) didn't know there was that much to explain. Always thought, outside of the ovals, that, since the 80's at least, IndyCar in look and procedure (not in costs or technologies) wasn't much different from F1. An interesting historical topic might be Jim Clark's career in IndyCars. He most famously won Indy in 1965, but his career wasn't limited to Indy and he also won a race at the famous Milwaukee Mile. Perhaps also F1/Indy related, the duel between Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart at the 1966 Indy 500.

    • @IndyFanatics
      @IndyFanatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree for long time racing fans you can definitely see the similarities between the series, but always good to describe to new fans unfamiliar with the series the slight differences between the 2!

    Reason why Indy demands a more well rounded car driver.
    No power steering
    Marginal mechanical edge
    Oval discipline, street/road discipline and gran prix circuit discipline.
    F1 drivers are not to be trifled with, but I believe that to be dominant in Indy car is far more difficult.

    • @IndyFanatics
      @IndyFanatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah definitely think the IndyCar calendar is the most challenging in any single seater category for sure! And the no power steering definitely make the IndyCar a real physical challenge to handle as well as technical!

    Love the video. Minor points to add. The cars are virtually identical but the teams are allowed to build their own shocks (dampers). So the big teams have an advantage with more money and shaker rigs for shock development. Also talking about setups, not only are there wing angles but which level of wickers on the front and rear wings make a difference. There is also a 7th guy over the wall now just to remove Aeroscreen tear offs.

    On a different note, for anyone who doesn't think Indy is a tough series to race, or that oval tracks are boring and require no skill, keep in mind that Jimmie Johnson, a bona fide oval master in NASCAR, is reluctant to dive into these open wheelers and run an oval race. I can understand why, too. The responsiveness of these cars is immense compared to the 3500 lb stock cars Johnson is used to racing. In NASCAR, the skill is in management of momentum and in the psychology of a racing series where "rubbing is racing." In Indy, the skill is in maintaining control of a twitchy, light chassis at blistering speeds in a series where "rubbing is crashing."
    A moment's break in concentration can result in snap oversteer that will put that sexy little Dallara straight into the wall. I think Johnson and Grosjean are both showing good sense in letting themselves accrue simulator time and real world practice to gain familiarity with the chassis before attempting something like, say, the 500.

    • @IndyFanatics
      @IndyFanatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think a very good point Britt! I think we said it in a video how underrated and skilful you need to drive on ovals, there is definitely a real skill to it! Definitely agree that Jimmie and Romain made the right choice!

      @timford3599 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Britt Gardner; That's an excellent view point and description of the vast difference between the two types of racing. It's that difference which makes, for me, IndyCar Racing especially at IMS the preferred series to follow, as I have for more decades than I would readily like to admit to lest I become termed as one of those "Boomers" which is an unnecessary pejorative term IMO.

      The worst track ever was a one mile circle track in Pennsylvania called Langhorne. It would develop ruts as dirt tracks do and caused many driver fatalities. How far back do you want to go? This is a little wide open. I know they ran on at least 50 tracks Assen, Brands Hatch, the Oval at Monza that doesn't count any of the dirt tracks... So I would also ask what's a bad track? One that kills it's drivers??... That would make the Indianapolis Motor Speedway the best and worst speedway in the world at the same time! Pike's peak is a great track that is no longer used. Ontario Motor speedway was to the extent possible an exact replica of Indy near Los Angeles, now it's a dying mall.

    I've watched F1 on and off since the late 80s, but I never really understood the whole championship, qualifying etc. Same with American football. Like it or not, I owe it to Netflix in regards to F1, everything finally clicked and I realized that the race itself is the culmination of a whole week or 2 weeks drama between drivers, mechanics, team bosses etc, and it just gets better as the season progresses. It is fair to say F1 is making a lot of money thanks to that show. Now we need one for Indy, I have no idea how Indy works, and in contrast to F1, I have never followed or watched an Indy race in my life, nascar either.

    I just hope that at some point we get engine-sounds close to what we had in the early to mid 90s. We got the chassis-designs back to a modernized-version of the ones from that era. We got the deep-crop of talented-racers like we did then. If we could just get the engines to sound as cool, Indycar would be ALL the way back. :)

    Great overview of the series. I would just add one point to your explanation of road/street qualifying: The two groups in segment one are determined by the "luck" of a blind name draw; thus opening up the possibility of one of these groups being "stacked" with a majority of the top drivers & teams. This gives at least some of the others (who would be in the other group) a better shot at making it at least into the second segment.

      Ah awesome news! Glad you are going to give IndyCar a try! There are 3 teams who historically have a better chance of winning they are Andretti Autosport, Team Penske and Chip Ganassi. But still a lot of variety as in the regular season they field 5 cars, 4 cars and 4 cars respectively and only Jimmie Johnson at Chip Ganassi you'd completely rule out of winning a race, so that's already 12 drivers competing for a win. But you also have Arrow McLaren SP on the rise with Pato O'Ward, Rinus Veekay at Ed Carpenter, Takuma Sato and Graham Rahal at Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and actually Helio Castroneves from Meyer Shank Racing won the Indy 500 which is the biggest race of the year.
      So I've waffled a bit there 😂 short answer, Andretti, Penske and Ganassi are more likely to be on the podium but other teams have a much better chance to outside of those teams than F1 for example.

    Your videos don't disappoint, and I must say, your enthusiasm for the sport is clear. At the risk of being a downer, I envy you the situation of being a new fan as you don't have any of the memories of being a long-standing fan. By that I mean the "split(s)" are in the past, many mistakes have been learned from, and the TV coverage is light-years ahead of where it was, both in quantity and quality (for a laugh, watch Sam Posey commentate, or better yet, don't).

    • @IndyFanatics

      Thanks Scott, appreciate the feedback and support as always! Yeah I can definitely see not that Indycar would have disappointed you in the past, but it would be tinged from the mistakes of the past and must have been frustrating to watch! Luckily it has developed into the series it has today, and to survive quite frankly it needed to. It needed to have a great racing product and in open wheelers it's arguably the best product currently.
      Haha I'm not sure whether to watch or not watch now 😂

      @@IndyFanatics I'll warn you that the series will make mistakes again😉, but hopefully nothing like in the past. The animosity from '96-'99 cannot be understated, and still exists to some degree. Browse the comments of many races from that era to see, and this is 20+ years later.
      Sam wasn't so much a bad commentator, he was just on a different page than the audience, and said many stupid/unrelatable things. Watch th-cam.com/video/GwkIlp7zmgg/w-d-xo.html for an example. I doubt many people watching were all that familiar with sailing. He was a broadcaster for ABC for many years, so he did the 500 telecasts. The dynamic in the booth between he and Bobby Unser is legendary as Bobby would call him out often.

    • @IndyFanatics
      @IndyFanatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah absolutely, but from my length of watching F1 there is also a lot of mistakes they have made, part of the parcel of top level motorsport. Though admit IndyCar really tried their best to top the list with those mistakes 😂 not surprised the animosity to the situation is still deep as it was such a mess.
      Ah OK well I will give a watch! He's modern day equivalent sounds like David Croft in F1, an OK hype man but talks absolute nonsense a lot of the time 😂

    • @scottmiller1531
      @scottmiller1531 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@IndyFanatics I'll check out some Croft commentary. The one thing I like about F1 commentators (my favorite team from here in the US was Bob Varsha, David Hobbs, and Steve Matchette) is that they never "talked down" to the audience. Up until the early 1990's, networks would often use the same team for all big events. Jim McKay (for example) would broadcast Indy, the Masters, the Super Bowl, etc. with another person. He'd do a decent job, but didn't have "product knowledge". Jackie Stewart would be his broadcast partner for motorsports. While Sir Jackie is a legend and did not do a bad job, he was clearly out of his element for NASCAR.
      Posey was never a bad guy, and was knowledgeable (he was a decent sports car racer and ran Indy in 1972, finishing 5th). He just had something that irritated you and he tried to hard to make up for it, making it worse. Posey's most infamous moment came in 1986, trying to do a radio interview Kevin Cogan under yellow when Kevin was leading Indy with laps to go. Kevin's response ; "I'm kinda busy Sam" While it was cleared by Cogan's team, I don't think Sam ever lived it down, especially since Kevin got jumped on the restart by Bobby Rahal and finished 2nd.

      My favourite commentary team in F1, though never got to experience it live because of my age was James Hunt and Murray Walker, had the perfect blend of entertainment, knowledge and great chemistry between the pair who started off with a difficult relationship but became good friends.
      Yeah its those type of things that sound good in principle but you do get exposed, especially when it's something you don't know much about!
      I mean yeah well meaning is OK, but it's knowing a time and a place and there is interfering too much with the event. Especially as something as big as the Indy500 the entertainment looks after itself, all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the show!

    I’ve got to say the big 3 races to win is Monaco for f1, Daytona 500 for nascar, and Indy 500 for Indy car

      Yup they are definitely big races and I'd definitely still include Le Mans in there!

    The 2 different tires are only used on road and street circuits. Ovals only use 1 compound

    What are sticker tires? What is the difference in the Red Tires and the Black tires? Don't worry, it's perfectly correct to spell tires wyth an i, no matter your discomfort level. Great video! Thanks!!

      Sticker tires are brand new, not used at all tires I'm not quite sure how the term sticker came to be. As for the difference between red and blacks it is similar to what F1 had a few years ago with the option and prime tires. The Red tires being like the option while the lacks being like the prime tire

      Thanks Tyler, having talked to Greg quite a lot in the comments I wasn't sure if it was a rhetorical or genuine question but I think this is a great description of the difference between the two!

      Very Good, Thanks Guys... They are called sticker tires because they are brand new and *still have the sticker put on there by Firestone*. You can see as the tires spin up what appears to be a white stripe on the tire, It wears off very quickly. Tires that are run one or two laps (usually in qualifying are set aside and are referred to as scuffed tires, no longer stickers, but have been through one heat cycle. They are still great tires and may be used in the race. Ovals only use the prime tire.

    Are there tire limits for the cars that get into the Fast 6 in Qualifying? Announcers mentioned something briefly, but didn't explain.

    • @IndyFanatics
      @IndyFanatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't believe that there is! I believe on Road and Street course qualifying the only thing a team has to decide is within 30 minutes of qualifying finishing they must inform IndyCar which tyre they intend to start the race on
