Keep in mind that many, if not most, screwdriver check stops need to have the screw turned clockwise until it cannot be turned further, in order to close the water flow from the hot and cold supply lines. The above animation probably has it wrong, as well, on the "off" position. "--" is normally on, "I" is normally off, when the screw slot is parallel, and then perpendicular to the pipe run, respectively.

That’s good to know! Thank you! I was concerned about it leaking behind the faucet, if I did not get the stops properly installed.

What happens if it takes an allen wrench, not a screwdriver, do you go all the way to the left?

@drjsteinberg - sounds more like the faucet cartridge needs replaced. The diverter controls the flow to the faucet, the faucet controls the flow out - so if you turn off the faucet and its still not quite off, sounds like its the faucet with the issue.

IMPORTANT: The instructions for turning off the water to the valve in this video are incorrect!! Simply turning the screw heads at the far left and the far right of the center cartridge a 1/4 turn will NOT turn off the water to the faucet, regardless if the slots are horizontal or vertical. READ ON: For this particular Moen faucet model, in order to turn off the water to the faucet [instead of turning off the water to the entire bathroom], you'll need to close the two screws---the one on far left, and the one on far right---both clockwise AS FAR AS THEY CAN GO - till the screw heads are only about a 1/16th of an inch visible. Doing so, closes/shuts down the water flow into the faucet--e.g., to both the center cartridge and the pressure/anti-scald regulator cartridge, making it easy to change each of them out and/or clean each one anytime you want. Then after you reinstall the cartridges, you open up the screws all the way counter-clockwise to resume water flow to the faucet. Trust me, this is the correct method per Moen, my plumber, AND my own experience.

I think there is no universally correct method for Moen valves. My shower valve was installed back in 2002, and when I was replacing the cartridge, it seemed that I would never reach the end by turning the screws clockwise in attempt to shut off the water locally. Eventually, by trial and error, I figured out that the water is fully open when the screws are parallel to the pipes, and shut off when the screws are perpendicular.

Nice video, except you've got the orientation of the stops wrong. The screwdriver slots show the direction of flow, so at the start of the video (i.e., at 0:24), both sides are OFF. After turning each side 1/4 turn (i.e., at 0:50 in the video) so the slots are horizontal, both sides are ON.

I’d say just turn it really hard til you hear a loud crackin noise 🤓

Depends on the valve. If it's a Moentrol (pull out knob to start water) Moen's support says turn full counter clockwise to open water flow.

I have this set up as I'm in a multi unit apartment and they're so old and worn that it needs replacing. The screw is pissing water like crazy. This part is not easy to find and now the entire building of all 200 units must shut off water supply in order for this to be changed.

So if the screw slot is HORIZONTAL, the water is OFF?

What are risks of leakage in most cases? If you don’t turn off the main.

    Good illustration but bad video!
Screw slot position is incorrect and certainly contravertial for the 1/4 turn.
In case of non 1/4 turn valve that requires the screw to be turned all the way left to fully open and turned all the way right to fully close.

Can those screws come out. I am afraid if I unscrew it to much it may come out and start spraying water all over the place. Is that even possible? I dont have as much pressure as I use to before the cartridge replacement. So I plan on going back in. Someone please let me know if the screws can come all the way out or if they stop at a certain poin/all the way open.

1/4 turn might not be good..mine are screwed all the way in until it bottoms out..so research your specific valve to be sure

One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of all bath and shower fuacets do not have shut-offs built into the faucet. So, most of the time you have to turn your main water off in your house before you work on the fuacet. I believe they were a set of moen. Good luck and have a great day.

My place was also built around 1980 and we have the same diverter. My problem is that when we go to turn off the shower or bath and press the knob all the way in, there is always some water still leaking out. Which is progressively getting worse over time. I went to home depot and only found stems, which I dont think will do anything with this type of setup. Please help!

I have a moen shower vale and these shut offs are a fair distance apart at either side of centre . I would have to make the hole in the tile hug to access these and im not sure the cover plate would do it. Would it be okay to tile over these shutoffs ?

    • @jeremylunning654
      @jeremylunning654 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Clive Young it's standard practice to leave access to any adjustments on the shower valve. The escutcheon plate should definitely cover it.
