  • My shower was not flowing properly and the temperature control was not really responding to inputs anymore, so I decided to disassemble the single-handle valve and see what was going on. It turns out that the repair could be completed FOR FREE with tools and materials most of you have on-hand already!

    Thanks so much for this video. I was at my wits end with low flow and very little hot water. Your video was very clear and helped not only with the process but also understanding how this valve/plungers worked. My plungers were frozen in place and after descaling and cleaning, I was able to get a fully and properly working tub/shower.

    I'm a pretty handy farm/ranch gal, but hadn't ever fixed my own shower before. A year ago I paid 2 different repair guys to fix this issue. 1st one (plumber) completely unsuccessful, 2nd one (handyman) knew what to do, cost me over $500 between the 2. Same issue with shower yesterday. Thanks to the knowledgeable handyman, who was happy to teach me last year & your perfectly instructional video I just fixed the dang thing again ALL BY MYSELF 😁for free👍👍 Appreciate you Sir!!

    Follow up on the tub stop valves. Took out the stop valves and both were clean. I closed both, turned on the water and removed the cartridge. I opened each stop valve and flushed tub/shower valve - lots of water spray .
    I then reassembled everything - cartridge with valve stops open. There was a HUGE increase in water flow.
    The takeaway from this is to flush out the valve body before replacing the cartridge.

      Great tip! It’s now been over 2 years since I posted this video and my shower is back to the degraded state that triggered this project. I’ll make sure to flush the valve body this time around!

    These screws on each side of the valve are shut off valves, not adjustments.

    You da man. I removed my cartridge and check valve and still had low pressure. I saw these stop valves, but worried if I took them out I’d be hosed. Now I see I can take them out and do what you did. Thanks for the video!

    Amazing! After two years, this video is still helping people like me. I replaced the cartridge but still no hot water. Then I saw your video and proceeded to purchase some vinegar a ratchet set and baking soda as well then scraped all of the calcium buildup off. After reassembling everything the hot water turned on full blast and the cold water worked perfectly! Thanks so much for your help!

    Fastest descaling solution, blows table vinegar away: Buy Sulphamic Acid chrystals at Home Depot or Lowes, it comes in a very small bucket. Dump them in a gallon of water and mix up. They dissolve slow. Not all chrystals will dissolve but that's OK, solution is now as strong as possible. Next, Drop parts to be descaled into solution. There will be an extremely fast dissolving of calcium, I mean it will literally be bubbling! In 3 minutes it will likely be done, it's that fast.

    Good morning
    I think I have the same
    Shower valve with you. I’m trying to find a handle for my shower. Do you know what brand it the valve. I bought a Delta face plate and a handle the face fit the handle doesn’t

    A little late. But you can get so much more out of your shower by easily removing the Red ring Temperature Limiter Safety with needle nose pliers from the ceramic cartridge. Without it you can get the max heat and blend of the two temps.. Again its a safety ring for the hot water. Know the risks. I love a hot shower.

    Finally an expert!!! I have seen many videos where the person says ...of that doesn't fix it call a licensed plumber. So thank you very much for keeping sweet and to the point. Question...what if the housing is removed and still no cold side pressure ...the hot water is perfect but the cold side trickles...

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you have removed the two spring-loaded plungers and descaled them, your water pressure should be consistent on the hot and cold sides. If not, there could be scale in your mixing cartridge. It seems unlikely, but there could also be an obstruction in your cold side plumbing after the water heater. A cold side clog can be trouble-shot by testing cold side pressure at every fixture between your shower and the water heater. If any fixtures have proper pressure, you know the issue is between the last good fixture and your shower.

      That's what a plumber recommended to me. If the pressure is low on either side, open those valves up by turning left. My hot was a mess and after just using a screwdriver to move a bit, plenty of pressure and WARM water in the middle, which I could never get. Turn off your water from the source before doing any of this.

    I took those two bolts off and everything seemed in order, so I took out the volume control and everything seemed good there as well. Then I watched your video and saw that those bolts were supposed to be springy and then I knew what the problem was. Soaked in vinegar and put back together and I have about 10x the flow. Thanks for the video. Problem solved.

    Do I need to shut off the main water unit or just the handle on off position is fine? It is so difficult to turn off whole unit water in the building.

      The water supply must be shut off upstream of the shower valve. Maybe you’re lucky and your unit has a dedicated shut-off…

    I installed my Home Depot Pegasus (Glacier Bay) shower valve seven years ago and it worked fine. A couple years ago I heard some pipe knocking under the shower so I opened the ceiling downstairs to get to the pipes and verified the noise was coming from the water supply lines going to the shower valve. Any faucet, toilet, dishwasher, and washing machine cycle caused the noise in the shower lines. I replaced the back portion of the cartridge and the noise got better but over time the pipe thumping came back. I even put water hammer arresters on the toilets and washing machine lines. No help. I was ready to put a big hole in the tile to replace the entire mixer valve and then I watched this video and it gave me the solution. The plunger in both cut off valves were calcified and stuck all the way in. I cleaned both plungers and the problem was finally solved. Thank you.

    i searched all over with issues that i had after using the two stop valves to isolate the shower valve so i could replace the cartridge . Finally discovered your post . Followed it to the letter and had success beyond expectations. one of the plungers was frozen solid and required an Aero Kroil intervention. The 50/50 vinegar DI water trick worked great . Thank You !!!! Your comment about dropping the valves into the abyss did keep me focused . Thanks again...

    Can you help me weaken the water? Because I don't want it to flow under strong pressure

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can either install a restrictor in your shower head inlet, or turn the pressure down at your regulator where the water supply enters the house.

  • @zrxbeast1100
    @zrxbeast1100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the water for the home have to be off before doing this type of work ????

    • @EkalbGnilrad
      @EkalbGnilrad  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you have a traditional plumbing system, yes the whole house must be turned off. Some newer homes have a “home run” system where each fixture, or a small group of fixtures, are plumbed off of a common header with shutoff valves. These systems are uncommon.
