Low Water Pressure in the Shower - Learn how to increase water pressure

  • Low water pressure can be caused by many things. If only one fixture has low pressure, it’s likely that you can solve the issue by just focusing on that fixture. If you’re getting low water pressure throughout your home, you might solve your issue by adjusting your Pressure-Reducing Valve. In my situation, I was having issues with low water pressure in our shower while every other shower or faucet in our home had good water pressure. For the purpose of this video, I wanted to demonstrate how to check the water pressure in your home with a water pressure test gauge. If you’re getting good water pressure throughout your home, you might not have to test your water pressure. Sometimes replacing an old shower head or removing the restrictor valve in your shower head can solve the issue. When that didn’t solve ours, I had to dig deeper. If you have a single lever setup in your shower, you have to remove the handle and cover to get to the valve and cartridge. A valve that is not correctly adjusted or a clogged cartridge can be the culprit of low water pressure in your shower. Luckily for me, I was able to solve the low water pressure issue by adjusting the dial or set screws on the valve. If that doesn’t solve your issue, you might have a clogged cartridge or clogged pipes leading into your shower.
    Tools to complete task:
    -Flathead screwdriver
    -Phillips screwdriver
    -2.5mm or 3/32 hex key
    -Water pressure test gauge
    Water Pressure Gauge (Updated Link)
    www.amazon.com/Measureman-Wat...
Ideally, water pressure should be between 45 and 60 PSI in most residential plumbing systems. If the pressure rises too high, particularly above 80 psi, plumbing and appliances (primarily water heaters) could be damaged or leak excessively. I checked with my local water authority and my water pressure should be between 50 and 75 PSI. Make sure to contact your water authority/district.
    :::Disclaimer:::
If you do not know what you are doing, please do not attempt to increase your water pressure. Increasing the water pressure too high could possibly cause damage to the plumbing system. Back many years ago when I used to rent. My landlord came to my apartment to place those water pressure restrictors to all my faucets and shower. After landlord was gone the water hardly had pressure coming out; the following week I went to the rental office complaining they said "NO worries everything is fine is normal". So, I had no idea what was the landlord had done to my faucets and shower head hose. Thank you for your wonderful advice and video. Blessings.

Thank you!!!! You just solved our issue. Seriously great advice and easy to follow step by step troubleshooting. Our household pressure was fine but just our shower had suddenly decreased pressure. As soon as I took apart the shower head I could see the restrictor had shifted somehow blocking some of the holes. Adjusted it and removed a little rubber blocking piece that wasn’t needed and now our pressure is perfect again. Thank you for saving us from having to pay for a new shower head or call a plumber!

Thank you so much for your video. I just had one of the bathrooms in my house remodeled and I couldn't figure out why the water pressure coming out of the shower head was so weak now. It was the flow restrictor in the new showerhead just like you said. I've always taken really quick showers but that low pressure was slowing me down. I have very thick hair, and I couldn't get the shampoo and conditioner out of it lol. It was driving me nuts and I'm not sure that I was actually saving any water anyway considering it made my showers longer 🙃

nice looking brushed nickel finish with multiple water spray options
Our master bathroom has a standing shower with handheld shower head.
We started to see some rust spots in the hose not to mention heavy mineral built ups in the shower head because our house has very hard water despite water softener we have.
My wife picked out this handheld shower head to replace our old one because she loves the brush nickel finish to match our bathroom decors but this turned out to be very impressive handheld shower head.
Although I have replaced shower heads many times in the past, it came with nice instruction on how to replace it for those who's not familiar with it. My only advise would be to use wrench to hold the base spout when removing and installing the holding adapter so you don't accidently twist and damage the base pipe when you over tighten it.
I really appreciate that it came with plenty of plumber's tape because you really want to put that on before connecting different parts so that there's no water leak in between threads. This is one of most common mistakes and reasons why there's leak after installing it. Very happy to see that they have provided plumber's tape to remind you to use it!
It also had rubber rings/washers in each connector but it also came with extra one, which is nice. They also included a shower drain cover to prevent hair from going in to the drainage, which is a nice bonus. I really love the brush nickel finish, which makes it look elegant and expensive. The 7 different water spray setting is nice to have so you can change it for different purpose. We will most likely leave it on one setting for most of the times but it's nice to have option to change it when needed, such as jet spray for cleaning the shower wall, etc.
After replacing the shower head, I didn't see any leak and the stainless steel hose feels sturdy. I also like that I can rotate and tilt the shower head holder and it stays in place. Overall, very happy with this shower head!

First, good video. My shower head which is somewhat similar to yours was also running very slow. I did the vinegar overnight soak with no improvement. I know my pressure through the house was good as there were no other issues. What I decide to do before I was to work on the water valve was to work back toward the wall. I removed the line and inspected. No issues there. Then I removed the assembly from the neck protruding from the wall and wouldn't you know it, there was the culprit, a clogged filter. But your video is good, the process of elimination works.

In my case, the restrictor was on the shower head (not on the hose). Take out that restrictor on the shower is harder than on the hose. But after removing the restrictor from the shower head, the water is blasting now. I already ordered the new shower from the store before watching this video but I will cancel it. I found a restrictor in the little thing that holds the handheld hose on my one shower, and in the handheld showerhead that attaches to the hose. On my other shower I have a regular showerhead off a three-way diverter for a handheld showerhead. But the showerhead and handheld showerhead both had the water saving things right inside and it helped a bit but after about a week or so I looked at the diverter and on the diverter input it had a reducer on it as well. I read somewhere even if you buy a set that comes with the diverter, hose, showerhead, and handheld showerhead they will put those reducers on both diverter outputs, the showerhead, and the handheld showerhead. freaking crazy!! I just thought it was because I bought my Pieces individually instead of in a set because I couldn’t find one that had everything I wanted in the showerhead, and the handheld part together. Thats why I ended up with three different reducers because it’s technically three separate parts. Buy then to find out that companies that manufacture it as one piece and sell it as one piece still put three sometimes five different reducers in it. The one I was reading about I think was moen, guy found reducers on the diverter input, both diverter outputs, the main showerhead, the handheld showerhead, and some of them even put it on both ends of the hose. Like they know we’re on to them so they have to start sticking them everywhere lol!!

They also put water flow restrictors in the water line at the connection bracket that holds the hand held shower wand. Sometimes they're also inside the connection bracket itself that the wand mounts onto. It's a ridiculous EPA regulation.

This shower head was easy to install within a few minutes, and looks great! I've been using a cheap-o plastic shower head with no adjustable functions, and this is an excellent upgrade. I really like that this showerhead is brushed nickel rather than chrome coated plastic, and the head is sturdy and solid.
I love all of the different settings, and the massage ones are excellent for getting clay masks out of my long hair quickly! I'm definitely going to be glad for this showerhead when I henna my hair again- that stuff is so hard to wash out with low pressure.
I also like how flexible this hose is compared to the cheap plastic one I had- it's much easier to move the hose around, and keep the hose out of the way.
This showerhead is well built, and seems like it can hold up to a lot of use in my shower. It even comes with a hair catcher (I needed one of those) and some thread tape. I love this showerhead, and it's a great deal for the price!
High Pressure Shower Head with Handheld, 7-Setting Massage Shower Head Brushed Nickel, 4.3" Detachable Shower Head with Hose, High Flow Showerheads & Handheld Showers, Adjustable Powerful Shower Heads

Very good, I needed this. One question: before and after backing out both hot and cold screws, you took off the cartage cap, but is there a reason to do that? Thanks

I have about 43 psi from the curb. And I can run 2 2nd story showers at the same time. It’s all about reducing flow restrictions on the way to the showers. I have a 1 inch main feeding into a 1 inch stainless pipe manifold. 3 one inch pex outlets from that. One runs to the hot water heater, one directly to the cold water side of my Maniblok. The hot water feeds into the maniblok as well. Every fixture in the house gets it’s own uninterrupted run of 1/2 inch pex, no fittings in any runs for corners. And that’s how I can run 2 2nd story showers Simultaneously on 43 psi curb without any booster. And I’m loosing roughly 11 psi from curb to shower head because of the height the water has to be lifted (25 feet or so) it’s a tall house.
