Tiny history lesson
It’s been kind of a running joke since his first ever appearance that he always returns with no explanation or reason from a seemingly impossible end.

My favourite was in Mark of the Rani when his entire explanation for not being burned to a crisp in his previous story was "I'm indestructible, the whole universe knows that!"
Reminds me of the Fu Manchu films with Christopher Lee, perpetually pursued by Nayland Smith. Seemingly destroyed at the end of the film, always destined to return.
I feel like the modern series is a little less oblivious to things like that so hopefully we get some kind of explanation, even if it's just a line or two

One of the things I have discovered over the years of watching DW, never count the Master out. The dude has died so many ways, and still come back. I think his / her character is as permanent as the Daleks and the Doctor.
Even if the Dalek's execute him, the Master will just turn into a weird snake thing and possess Eric Roberts. The Master's more immortal than the Doctor.

Yup. The Daleks, Cybermen, and the Master always come back. You can never get rid of them.
Just to warn you and everyone who might not be aware, the credits have a little tribute to Terrence Dicks, who died last year.
If you haven't heard of him, he was the script editor for all of the 3rd Doctor's era, co-wrote the 2nd Doctors final story, wrote the 4th Doctor's first story, wrote the 5 Doctors and wrote most of the Doctor Who Target Novelizations, which were the only way anyone could reexperience old Doctor Who stories before VHS was a thing.
A lot of fans had fond memories of him, especially those who learned to read with his books, and he had the nickname of "Uncle Terry".
Just thought it was worth pointing out.
Sacha Dhawan totally knocked it out of the park with that performance. From the manic enjoyment to the sudden burst of anger to the look of pain when he said “everything you think you know is a lie”.
FYI - tissue compression (shrinking people to kill them) is a thing the master used to do in classic Who.

Yes. Great. No lead whatsoever. Remember when they used to built up to master reveal? For at least half a season. And now just "im not really a sprinter, oh wait but i read that you are a sprinter. Oh really? Oh ok well im the master fuck you."
Nobody saw it coming and that is why it was great. Genuine shock.
@tylerx2f01 It shakes up the premise to not have a build up. That one flaw in the plan doesn't phase him and he can finally relish in his evil rather than try to come up with a lie to hide again. I do enjoy the "Prime Minister" and "Four Knocks" set ups but that could get predictable eventually. And Classic Who had him appear suddenly as a reoccurring villain whenever he liked so its reminiscent of that. I can understand your point of view, but I think the shock value far outweighs the lack of build up, except the "Spy Master" sub-plot.
Being shocking alone doesn’t make a twist great IMO. A la Game of Thrones Season 8.

He did say he knew the Doctor when he was a man to Graham plus a lot of people knew that he was fishy but no one expected him to be the Master. The episode was great way before the Master reveal. If it was just Martin and the creatures it would still still be a good episode.
Shrinking people into figures is a thing Anthiny Ainley's master did back in the 80s, Chibnall is great at referencing classic who without it feeling like forced nostalgia bait
Roger Delgado and Alex Macqueen both also used the TCE, and I think Geoffrey Beevers and Derek Jacobi have as well.
Shrinking was in the first master episode back in 1971

There's a multiple earths hint in this when they're looking at the maps of spy locations- it's multiple maps not just one, plus they're from beyond the universe...
I'm thinking that too, multiple Earths, and the Doctor may not know which one she's in. Or a simulation like The Matrix, or the Gallifreyan hard drive in Dark Water.

@@cosmichobo4216 It isn't. According to an Audio Drama/Novel, Missy is the 19th body. For this to all work with the known incarnations of the Master (from TV, Audio, Novels, etc), Missy has to directly follow John Simm's Master.

@@Jamestopboy that's very interesting to know because I thought it would also be in between the two as well to show how he goes a little more nuts forgets some stuff and winds up as missy and added that Simms last lines to missy was how she couldn't heal her self and get another incarnation because they both killed each other which we all knew probably wouldn't stick but they could have played with that idea a bit
I mean in theory the very first master in classic who is on his last regeneration since the next time we see him hes a like a grotesque monster where the explain it as him being out of regenerations then he takes over another humans body to become the 2nd notable actor to play the role then theres the american movie so weve seen his final regeneration then 4 after the final time. And the miniaturization stuff is a classic master trick, he also has serious mind control abilities
The master he "die" a lot of time in the classic serie and he "come back to life" everytime with no reason so the new Master return is normal ! ;)

Yes! I was honestly really into this episode and soooo excited that we have a two-parter! I have no idea where they’re gonna go with this, but having that twist was pretty interesting!

They remind me of the 456 from Torchwood: Children of Earth... not just the voice but the personality of the one that spoke, and that dimension (?) fits their aesthetic...

Dhawan's Master looks soo promising! He has the manic kind of energy of Simm but suave. I did like Gomez but I do feel like they work better as enemies rather than working together so I'm glad they went back to that!

I'll be honest; I was more excited for your reaction than I was for Doctor Who coming back. I like Sacha Dhawan a lot and I think he's a really good casting choice for the Master. I really like that for your first time watching Doctor Who along with us, you get a new Master to react to. :D And your reaction to that part was really great.

@@JustSoShayla Well I thought the ending was great but to be honest, the rest was a mixed bag for me. I think I might like it more after I see Part 2 and everything makes more sense (and we see more of the Master).

So the flying house is most likely the Masters TARDIS. If you remember from Hell Bent, that American Diner was also a TARDIS and the console room was hidden behind a door. Perhaps the console room is hidden inside the house, maybe behind the computers Graham saw first.
Yeah, got that. Guess I should have suspected something when "O" began creating force fields, but finally got it when the shack was flying. Although piloting a Tardis by remote control is something of a rarity - supposedly cant be done without a device from the high council
One thing that has got me curious is The Master's interactions with Yaz. Is he going to try and tempt her into being his companion? Other thing that came to my mind, the show made The Master a woman as a prelude to the Doctor being a woman. Is the show doing something similar with the Master being an actor of color?
He's been an actor of color before I believe.
So I guess you have probably made a point since we know who will be the 14th and 15th doctors

Heh, I've always said that the biggest question when it comes to cliffhangers is whether they can nail the landing in the next episode...literally in this case, yes...?!
All jokes aside, if the rest of the series can live up to the standards set by this first episode, then we should be in for some fun over the next few weeks, with Future Shaylian reactions as the icing on the Whovian cake (I'm just sorry that we couldn't get your reaction to the 'Snap!' line in this one, as that was my own favourite bit, but I digress...)

I really did love this episode and I'm glad you liked it too! We are all glad you're back in the new year and as excited as we are!
The Master seems very much like John Simm's Master, and I think that he might have just regenerated from Simm to Dhawan. But of course, that means that Missy knew all about the Doctor's future, so who knows. We'll see how it plays out!
This was such a strong start to the series. I was apprehensive about the whole "spy" thing at first, but it ended up being quite fun. The light-monsters are interesting and feel legitimately threatening. And holy heck, I did not see that ending coming!

I've commented this before and I'll do it again. I love this Master. He gives off Matt Smith vibes which works because I always thought that actor could play a good Master.
This was by far my favorite episode for the beginning of season 12. What a fantastic way to start it out..Cant wait for part 2. I havent been excited about doctor who in awhile and this episode has made me want to watch more...

I thought it was brilliant. This episode was so... refreshingly Doctor Who. My opinion on Oh / The Master is that he may actually be from another universe, our master’s story might have actually ended with Missy. Notice the multiple earths reference.

Daniel Barton's actor is Sir Lenny Henry, a venerable British philanthropist. It's exciting to see him play a villain.
I suppose it would have been asking too much to give him the same on-screen introduction that Sir John Hurt had.
Four/ a few more thoughts and gems I picked up (a few possible spoilers but I'm probably very wrong): 1. "Who's not really who?" after the reveal - another who pun for the ever-growing collection! 2. When he touches his heart after the reveal I think it's on the 'non-human' side. 3. I seem to remember Missy being able to vanish people out of danger teleport style (the daleks episode(s) ) - could this be the same trick "O" uses to escape the plane? Yaz ends up inside the 'hut' from the same place the doctor seems to finish up. Also is the 'hut' 'forcefielding' or even 'relocating' at 29:40- interesting familiar pattern! He's 'had a few years to rig it out' (this episode is delicious with a rewatch post-reveal!) 4. The hints that Mr Barton could be a double or triple agent for "O", could one or both of them actually be on the same side in the kind of slightly twisted self-amusement/ Doctor-winding-up way Missy might have been liable to play with just to grate at the doctor a little... (the 'gotcha' after 'everything you know...') Think "O" probably will be 'the enemy' but I feel there's some sort of other twist within a twist we haven't seen coming coming, "O" says their paths (him and the doctor) have only crossed once very briefly when she was a man- which makes me think more Missy than Master (when I was a woman????) as the Master in male form has crossed paths lots with the doctor. "O" seems genuinely surprised at some of the creatures' moves- is he less in control of them than he claims? I'm thinking Barton may not be a baddie.... And the glowy things have stolen Sylvester McCoy's doctor's hat so it's clearly an invasion force of his doctor :) Circa 18:43 - clever visual foreshadowing of circa 37:17ish? Subtly clever. And iced tea, possibly, for me.
Going from Fry's last comment 'oh' to the master's description of himself as 'O' made me suspect him from the start (as a villain, but not as the Master). Those forest of electifried root like things makes me think of the (albeit lighter) innards of the Tardis - timelordy like tech.
PPS: Shayla, I know you're going to be verrry busy reacting to the new series of Doctor Who for a while; but when you get a chance, I'd highly recommend watching and/or reacting to the BBC's new adaptation of Dracula courtesy of Messrs. Moffat and Gatiss of former Whovian fame - two episodes in, and it's absolutely fang-tastic so far, yes? (The cliffhanger for episode two in particular might be even better than this one...!!!).
We don't know that the John Simm Master regenerated directly into Missy. Maybe there was 1 or more other versions of the Master between them.
There's also the possibility that this version is from before the John Simm Master too.
Well it took us only whole two seasons before we learned how did the Master survive last time and become Missy, so...

I didn't expect him to be the Master. AMAZING. The Master feels like the Master, Jodie does not feel like the doctor for me. Too much cringy slang. The Upgrade line? What? That's what a cyberman would say.

For me this was a FANTASTIC return for Doctor who. The master, whilst we've only seen 2 ish mins of his performance, I really like him! Can't wait for the next one.
