    Alternate titles for this episode:
    1.THAT episode of series 9

    3. The episode with the really sick music
    4. The masterpiece of Doctor Who

It takes an hour to climb it and an hour to go around it, and every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens its beak on the diamond mountain. And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, the first second of eternity will have passed.’ You may think that’s a hell of a long time. Personally, I think that’s a hell of a bird.”💙

So glad to hear that Peter may now be your favourite Doctor, to me, he is the most 'Doctor-y' Doctor out of all the new bunch. By which I mean he echoes or encapsulates the Doctors of the original series. More mysterious, otherworldly, unpredictable, crotchety, sharper wit than his more recent predecessors that he could have easily slotted into the original series lineup anywhere from the 1960s and 1970s.
If you like Peter's side of the character then I really think you'll love the classic Doctors, especially the first four. I think many subs would love to see you dip into a couple of fan favourites from each.

Assuming it takes the The Doctor roughly two to three days per loop to reach the wall and "sharpen his beak," and he's been in the Confession Dial for about four and a half billion years, he has died anywhere from approximately 550 billion times to 820 billion times.

I adore this one. I think the crew who wrote it did a fantastic job of displaying the timelessness of grief and how you live with it in isolation all your life, while trying to live at the same time. And that part "The day you lose someone isn't the worst..." to "It's all the days you live without them" has to be the most powerful I've ever cried. It's so true.

As someone who was watching classic "Doctor Who" as far back as in the early-to-mid 80s on my local PBS channel and has seen all of NuWho so far, this episode is to me the greatest story of the NuWho era; and is in at least the top 20 of all time DW stories Classic or NuWho.
One thing that makes Peter Capaldi really great as the Doctor, and this goes for David Tennant as well, is they both were mega "Doctor Who" fans growing up. Capaldi's Doctor as a fan growing up was primarily Jon Pertwee's Third Doctor (but he was also influenced by William Hartnell's First Doctor). Tennant's Doctor growing up was Peter Davison's Fifth Doctor, but he was also a huge fan of Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor. So in being huge fans from long ago, they both got what the Doctor was all about, and incorporated some aspects of their favorite Doctors into their own portrayal of the Doctor. With Capaldi's Doctor, you get Hartnell's grumpiness-with-a-twinkle-in-his-eye and Pertwee's take-charge attitude. With Tennant's Doctor, you get Davison's nice-guy, sensitive charisma mixed with Baker's combination of acting the fool to disarm opponents, but also his tendency to get darkly arrogant at times.

This is my favorite episode of modern Doctor Who, hands down. From Peter Capaldi's brilliant acting to Murray Gold's breathtaking score (I think "The Shepherd's Boy" is the best track he has ever composed), this episode IS Doctor Who and made Twelve my second favorite doctor (in a close second to Nine). I am so happy you enjoyed it

One of the best episodes I've ever seen in all of Doctor Who, I would even dare say, one of the best stories I've ever seen on television history due to the complexity involved, the poetic nature of it, the personal conflicts and resolutions it generates about us and the Doctor's storyline, the fact it can be seen as a debate between depression/oppression vs endurance/freedom, the cleverness of playing with all the elements, the fact that it can be seen as a great standalone, the acting involved, the monologues, the fact that it's a great mystery (which Doctor Who should often be)... I could go on all day. This episode is a wonderful and rare piece of television art imo.

This was the episode that convinced me Capaldi was the Doctor. He was a fucking *legend* here. Carring an entire ep on your own shows the quality of an actor, and Peter Capaldi is top tier. I was blown away; watched this over and over, in awe.

This is my favorite episode of Doctor Who ever. There is so much subtext in this episode. Part of it is a love story, a revenge plot, but to me, it's a great metaphor about grief.
"It’s funny. The day you lose someone isn’t the worst - at least you’ve got something to do. It’s all the days they stay dead."
That line has always stuck with me. I lost someone very close to me a long time ago and the days after their passing where taken up with making plans, calling family members, closing up their affairs, etc. By the time I had free time to think about how I felt about it all, too much time had passed. It would have been improper to bring my feelings to family members who were processing too. The cold that settles in when you realize that in all days that are ahead they'll still be gone.

The idea for the monster in this episode actually came from Jenna Coleman. In an interview she was asked what she thought the scariest villain was, and her reply was that she thought the scariest villain would be something that comes at you very slowly, it's unstoppable, and there's no way to escape from it: it just keeps coming at you, but very slowly.
Moffat heard her and thought, "Huh," and filed it away.

A fine reaction. It was very hard for me, the first time I saw this episode. Seeing The Doctor suffering, seemingly so endlessly, all for the love of his friend. How triumphant, though, when you start to realize that he's actually making headway, actually eroding his way through the diamond wall like some glacier. When he says the line about the bird, and you realize that's what it means, I felt like standing up.

I remember on 1st watch the slow realisation of what was happening, followed with the impact of Thousand years becoming Millions and then the incredulous Billions. Great Sci-Fi, My mind was blown. I re-watched straight away (I never do that) and watched a totally new story. I re-watched again recently for the first time in a few years and with some life experience under my belt and watched a 3rd story about Grief. That line about, The day you lose someone isn't the worst, it's all the days they stay dead..... Damn that hit me hard. This could be my favourite episode of any TV Show.

The combined talent of Capaldi, Moffatt and Rachel Talalay ( director) is what makes this episode one of, if not the best, episodes of New Who. It’s a travesty that Peter didn’t get nominated for a tv BAFTA for this and although the actors nominated in 2016 were great actors he should have been one of them. The fact Peter carried this episode by himself is just astonishing.
