    Here we are, probably the most polarizing season of Who. I hope everyone can respect people's opinions in the comments. In the words of the Twelfth Doctor: "Just be kind."

    • @ldkinbote
      @ldkinbote 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Some people have speculated that the words of the Twelfth Doctor to his next self to above all be kind is the main thing that stuck subconsciously with her and that's why this incarnation of the Doctor is more open and kind. I thought that was an interesting thought.

      "Fam". I've done a little bit of stage acting (community theater, a very little bit of television) and I can see, with my own eyes, Bradley Walsh, whom I have never met, pouring his heart into the role. Just watched the series 12 finale, and have no reason to change my opinion. Shout out also to Tosin Cole ("Ryan Sinclair") and Mandip Gill ("Yazmine Khan"), for exactly the same reason. There are so many 13 haters out there. Goddamn it, look at them go!

      It was a writing issue. The new head of DW Chibnall is quite good at writing dialogue that sounds good. Like with Graham for instance, he was a main reason I didnt quit series 11, but for me it was the lack of Aliens. I geuinely like the campy scooby doo method of pulling off the mask and revealing its actually aliens not supernatural threats. The quote of 'any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic' thats how the best who stories are written. with aliens technology being thought to be magic.

      Series 11 had a very large budget with all new cameras, all new writers, an all new show runner, and all new actors.
      It's why there's such a severe jerk in "feel" when one goes from Series 10 to Series 11.
      Edit: I also forgot to mention how they increased how long the episodes are, which generates a bit of a shift in Pacing and story structure.

    • @DixyRae
      @DixyRae 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ArlanKels I believe the cameras themselves were the same but the big change they bragged about was the shift to anamorphic lenses. That's what's really pushing the cinematic look. Bigger field of vision especially on background elements, horizontal lens flaring, that sort of stuff. I think it looks good on standard shots but I feel like the push for a cinematic look really makes the TV budget CG stand out more.
      The move to HD cameras have already made production shy about using practical effects since lower resolutions might hide seams or fudged details. Which is a shame, bc DW provides such a broad canvas for costume and scale model artists. The fact that the frog was an actual puppet in episode 9 made me so happy that it saved that whole episode for me.

    • @CountScarlioni
      @CountScarlioni 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ArlanKels S11 didn't have a large budget. From what I can tell it had the same budget to work with as S10. The BBC itself is currently in a funding crisis which isn't helping matters. It doesn't really matter though because anything they could spend would be peanuts compared to the big US programmes. OK, It's not quite as bad as it was in 1989 when one whole season of Doctor Who cost the same amount as a single episode of Star Trek The Next Generation but Doctor Who continues to have an uphill battle putting the cash they don't have on screen!
      They concentrated their resources for S11 by having fewer but longer episodes. Also this thrice damned 18 month production schedule is another method Cardiff are using to try and garner more resources to pour into the episodes. Their fear is that they could look left behind by other stuff on TV/Netflix. It was that factor of looking cheap and tired that got Classic Who killed off. The fact people think they have a big budget shows the plan must be working to some degree.

    • @epiccarrot88
      @epiccarrot88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem for a lot of people is that it doesn't really feel like Doctor Who. Every time there's a new Doctor they always bring something new to the table, but 13 has no features that relate to just her Doctor. Not to mention that for the first female Doctor, they really needed to play it safe because for over 50 years some fans have come to know that The Doctor is a man. If they were going to have a female Doctor, they should have made her first season VERY reminiscent of popular older episodes, by either following similar story beats or bringing back old villains, to get the message across that the show is still Doctor Who. Seeing how 10's era was the most popular since 4's, I'd say follow the structure of his episodes. Episode 1: meet new companion and face new aliens. Episode 2+3: one episode is in the far future relating to the future of mankind, the other is a historic episode with a famous historical figure and a reimagining of a fairytale creature. Episode 4 and 5 are a two-parter with an old villain returning. Etc etc etc. Series 11 had a lot of missteps when it comes to keeping the fans on board, so the fact it's so decisive should come to no surprise.
      I'm not saying 'myah, you must hate Chib and Whit if you TrUe fan', but i'm merely saying why this series was so divisive, and that's ignoring the sudden focus on bluntly told political stories that drove a lot of people away too (I mean, compare Planet of the Ood to Rosa, which contained similar political themes.)

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@epiccarrot88 'Rosa' isn't a sci-fi metaphor about discrimination/slavery though, it's a historical/educational story (with a bolted on sci-fi element). That's actually _very_ reminiscent of older episodes (classic Who, particularly in the early days, used to do it quite often). 'Rosa's also not a political episode in any way that makes sense to me. Treating human beings as, y'know, human beings is beyond politics surely ? I don't say that to be self-righteous BTW, I just literally mean it's not a left/right issue (although elements of both the left and right might try to make us believe it is).
      I broadly agree though that they maybe made series 11 a bit _too_ different, given they had to sell some fans on the big difference of a female Doctor. Mostly though I just think Chris Chibnall's not that good a writer of sci-fi.

    • @epiccarrot88
      @epiccarrot88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@anonymes2884 I know that older episodes used to do that, but there's a reason those kinds of episodes never made it past the First Doctor. Doctor Who has always been about sci-fi metaphors. Even Vincent and the Doctor had the metaphor of the alien being in the same shoes as Vincent, with both suffering from depression and being lost alone in a world they don't understand. Doctor Who has grown since the historical episodes, and found its niche. Doctor Who's niche for politics was vague sci-fi metaphors, and that's how it's been for ages.
      And no, Rosa and what happened in her life aren't political. However, making all the white people villains even though white people at the time would be arrested if they didn't go along with the black racism is political. A space racist saying 'this is where it all went wrong' is also political. They're very clear metaphors for Chib's political opinions because they're so not Doctor Who.

I perceived that there were elements that were lacking, but assumed and trusted that they would gradually be built up as the season progressed. It took quite a while for me to realise that this wasn't ever going to happen, and that's when the energy started to drain out of me. But with Doctor Who it's only ever a matter of waiting for the next big change to take place and for a whole new take on the show to begin, so we never have to completely despair. @JustSoShayla, you would probably love Capaldi's first movie, Local Hero, from 1984. I think he had done a little bit of small-time theater but this was his first time in front of a camera (he was friends with the director, Bill Forsyth). He absolutely nails his role in it. The movie itself is delightful, about a midlevel executive from a Texas oil company (Peter Riegart) sent by the crazy, astrology obsessed CEO (Burt Lancaster, in his last film role) to Scotland to try to buy an entire town and the beautiful bay it's built on, for the purposes of building an oil terminal. Capaldi stars as his "local" guide, who, though Scottish, is an URBAN scotsman, and knows as little about navigating small-town rural Scotland as his American counterpart. It's WONDERFUL.

All the doom and gloom makes you think you're going to watch a disaster and you end up watching a perfectly fine episode.

    Not as bad as people say. I won't rave about it, but I think the noise you heard about S11 is in reality what you hear EVERY YEAR. Only real exception was series 4. Everyone called time on the show after Peters 1st episode, and Matts...Even the BBC...True story!
    There's something about WHO, and the wait for it that sends expectations through the roof and people are always disapointed...But a few years later they look back on a series they hated more fondly - And I think what proves that is that binge watchers like yourself never get as negative as us fans who started out in 2005.

She is, in short, exactly what 12 asked his next incarnation to be). Maybe we'll see it in series 12.

Those that are not get shunted to weird times/channels or disappear altogether. Funding is a major issue, hence so many collaborations now with HBO and others. My feeling is that with any show (not just Dr Who) the BBC are more interested in the number of people who watch rather than with viewer involvement. I also don’t really like Jodie, but I suspect that’s not her fault and if she was briefed properly and given time she could make a really great Doctor-character, as it stands though she spent a whole season doing Matt Smith’s greatest hits without any real sense of her even wanting to put her own spin on the iconic character, so disappointing.

    I have already touched on this in previous comments, but this season is more to the point of what the classic run of the series was like (singularly standing episodes that aren't tied to a story arc). As I am child of the 70's-80's, when the series was introduced to Americans, this season has a vibe of 'a spirited adventure' with a group of friends. Sure, they seem to stumble into danger inadvertantly every now and then, but they tend to escape unharmed to their next stop on the road, wherever that road takes them.

  • @will8994
    @will8994 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    To be honest, I think this series is just what the show needed after the shaky Steven Moffat era. After a tonne of mixed quality writing, an over-reliance on fan service and deus ex-machinas up the wazoo, we needed a fresh start with a new Doctor and a new showrunner. Something more down-to-earth and simple. This season delivered exactly that.

    • @will8994
      @will8994 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. There were certainly moments of Smith and Capaldi’s eras that I enjoyed (particularly series 5 and series 10), but the show needed a fresh start and a new identity that would be accessible to new audiences.
      A lot of people I know stopped watching after David Tennant left and jumped back on board with Jodie Whittaker. So if anything, regardless of quality, the series has been a massive success in terms of attracting new audiences.

    Capaldi had a very Classic Doctor vibe. Maybe it was age. Maybe it was the fact that he was such a Who fan to begin with. I'll say this about Classic Who, it swings from good to not good pretty wildly. More so than the modern show. Probably want to check out a few lists of best stories and just pick and choose a few from each Doctor.
