Thank you so very much. I used your video to open my computer to change out the fan due to the annoying overheating messages and frequent shut downs. I went to Best Buy Geek Squad to repair. They wanted $85 to ship my computer out to troubleshoot it before they could give me a diagnosis. I bought the canned air for $7 and I purchased a Logitech fan pad to help cool down my unit for $25. It didn't fix the problem. Bought a fan from eBay and used your video to install. THANK YOU! Saved much money
Thanks for sharing the in depth disassembly of the Toshiba. Not only was my A505 getting a bit warm, the cmos battery was on life support. I felt more at ease seeing you tare into your clients laptop. Made my repair so much more easy. Thank you for the confidence builder.
BTW I used this video to open a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5150. You have the best quality video I could find on You Tube. Thanks again. I called Best Buy Geeks and was told they would install the fan for $55. I was afraid they would add hidden fees so I opted to use your video as a DIY. I am completely satified. The fan cost me about $20.
This video has been a godsend! Thanks to the brilliant instruction I managed to repair the same problem on my own Toshiba laptop. I wouldn't even have attempted it had I not discovered this. Three months later and the laptop is still working perfectly. Thanks a million!
Its people like you who take time to film their work that made me want to do this stuff, 3/4 years on I've fixed a load of laptops a built a few computers. I am now set to study for the compTia a+ and network+ , so thank you for taking your time to teach all of us.
Thank you. I was going to pay some guy to do it, but now I am inspired and confident enough to replace the cooling fan myself. And I might even check out the heat sink while I am at it. God I just love youtube.
Thanks for informati and useful video. With your help I refurbished my 3 year old Toshiba Satellite L505. It constantly overheated and shut down. Saved me some money and the environment some waste. Happy New Year! Erik Göteborg Sweden.
I have the A505 (which was more complicated to tear apart than the one in the video) and my dad who is a retired computer programmer said this was what I needed to do. So I watched the video and halfway through tearing the computer apart my dad looks very concerned and says "well it is very possible you could mess it up" So then I'm like WTF and start stressing. Well, I did it and it worked perfectly! Pretty good for a girl with no computer experience! Thanks for the video!
Much appreciated. I have repaired all types of pcs-servers-laptops etc. It doesn't take a brainiac to repair one. But it takes a smart person to look for or upload a video. It looks like we are both awesome. OK you are more awesome... I have a X770 with a noisy fan. Toshiba's fan is the biggest load of junk. Awesome Vid, one of the best I have seen. You know the one time I got lazy and didnt look for a video I got tripped up by a eePC. Thanks Heaps Matt
Hi - want to Thank You for posting this vid - my son's Toshiba laptop recently started over heating when playing certain games... Following your guide, we were able to open it up, and found the fan was really clogged with dirt and 'stuff'. We cleaned it out, put it back together and we'll see what happens. If it's still over heating, we're going to follow your video and get to the processor next time... I'm A+ certified but have never worked on laptops until now. You gave me the confidence to try! Thanks again!
Just followed this to get a Toshiba laptop working after 1 year of sitting on bench! Can't believe all it needed was a $3 tube of thermal grease. Thanks!
Just want to thank you for the tutorial on cleaning my Toshiba laptop, and doing it without the speed-ups in the video to save the time, the explanation of everything being done was very helpful to me, Thank You
Anytime Pogokaola - Thanks for the feedback. I have dedicated 12 years of my life fixing electronics, and I enjoy it more every day. My parents would yell at me when they found out that I had dismantled the answering machine or their clock radios, not I do it for a living!
I have a Toshiba Satellite model: L305D-S5934 and it was basically set up the same way as yours for the most part. I was going to question you about that thermal pad that is usually on the GPU but it looks like you cleaned it off so I'm about to do the same, I guess you already answered my question! Thanks for the video. I really love youtube when it comes to DIY stuff. I'm in Florida as well, New Port Richey.
Thanks for the video, Brian. I'm working on my ex-girlfriends laptop ( because I'm cool like that ... ) and she shipped it to me DOA. Found the fan full of cat hair, and I have a feeling it may have been cooked beyond repair. Great tutorial. I kind of roll the same way, just wing it. But you saved me from breaking a couple of things watching you do it. Thanks again.
I know it's been awhile since this video was posted but I just wanted to say great job! I really enjoyed the presentation of the video, everything step by step, very easy to follow.
Although I am an experience self-taught "PC repair guy" I am always a bit wary of laptops. I just finished repairing a similar Toshiba model and used your video to get myself properly briefed as to what to expect. Perfect video. Thanks for this. Followed your tips and it all went well and is working a treat. Just subscribed! Mike -Belfast
Thanks for the video.!! When I replaced my keyboard ,I got a nice look into the fan. Yikes!! I watched this video, and Tackled it myself..My laptop was nasty dirty and running hot.I took it apart, cleaned it really well. And its running like new again. Thanks Again. I gave a shout out to you on my Laptop video.
This is one of the best DIY videos I have ever watched. Very well done and very informative. I am watching because I have a very similar laptop that was getting hot and all of a sudden it refuses to boot. It won't even go into POST. I got it to boot one time by "slapping" it on the bottom while pushing the power button. But that was the last time it booted. I have since purchased a new laptop and retrieved all of the files from the old h/d. What do you think my chances are of getting my old laptop back into operation? I'd sure appreciate your help. I like the way you work. Are you anywhere near So Cal?
Glad I could help! Thanks for posting up the cost comparisons as well. BB would have charged you a whole heck of a lot more than $55 by the end. If you machine came back functioning I would be surprised...we fix a lot of BB/GS "repairs" in our shop. We ring a bell every time we see one of those pink stickers! :)
Thanks a lot. I just fixed my Toshiba satellite 505. This video helped me work up my confidence to try something like this for the first time. I am an mechanical engineering student and have dome some simple maintenance for a desktop but had never touched a laptop or the cooling sink assembly. I did forget to put one of the keyboard screws back in -.-
Thank you very much for the time and effort that you put into making this video. I have a Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980 that overheats as soon as the temperature in my home gets over 70 degrees. I have had it repaired twice but it still keeps overheating and shutting down. Could replacing the hard drive with a solid state drive help the problem? I am going to take it apart and try what you did. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you in advance.
Nice one DIY Tech, one of the best tear downs I've seen. I particularly like how organised you are with you screw box. As an Electronic Engineer myself who works with ESD items it does bother me to see no wrist strap. But what I did notice was you never got out of your seat or shuffled around so a static build up will be negligible. I'm thinking about cleaning my Tosh Satellite C670D and was looking for info on tearing it apart. My family have 2 Advent 9117's which will need a clean as they do get hot and are about 5 years old..... once again thanks for the nice video.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge of cleaning the vent and applying the CPU gel! I've seen other videos, but yours by far is the most instructional! I've been having overheating problems with my own Toshiba Satellite, but with this video I feel confident that I can do it! Thank you again! By the way, how does one ground themselves while working on a laptop? I've done it with when working on my desktop, but never with a laptop.
You the man, I'm technically inclined but never did this kind of job, just did what u did to my nephew lab top ... awesome thanks a lot was very helpful !!
Great idea about the little box to keep track of your screws. I didn't have a little box like that but I did have an empty egg carton and a Sharpie :) I think the big problem was dust, it was insane the amount of dust in my computer. Thanks for posting this how to, it was really easy to follow.
Pretty good and looks like a large android inside, because we replace cracked cell phone screens. You might have mentioned when removing the motherboard to be careful not to bend it. I have seen several people try and rodeo them out of the chassis. Your style was explained well for the novice to dive right into it.
This really does look pretty satisfying. Going to be doing this with my laptop as soon as I get some more tools. Hopefully I won't destroy it. Great video man!
Thanks Brian. i reinstalled a new fan and heat sink unit on my Toshiba Satellite P300. thanks for the tip with the box and labeling the screws. (though i still had a few left over (lol)). All good it's working fine. Your video was a great help the best explanation and demonstration. Thanks again.
Nice work Brian, My Toshiba satellite A300 heats up I mean physically Cleaning the fan and applying thermal paste fix the problem ? Another thing why not replace a five-year fan is not tired ? Thank you !
Champion! Great video... now I know what to do or get done on my Satellite … it has been getting hot for a while and I did not want to get it serviced again... not sure that hey did last time but it surely was not this.... cheers from Australia.
Thank you for this helpful video. I have an old Toshiba L 655 from 2010 with an Intel i5 460. It is still doing the job but the fan sounds like a vacuum cleaner and its getting really hot doing nothing just under 70°C. When that happens it is noticeably slowing down. I want to clean it and replace the cooling paste. Maybe Ill get another year out of this machine when it is done. Lets see.
Hi Brian . Firstly thanx for all your videos. The machine is an Acer aspire 5553g. I´ve ran into bad luck on my ribbon connectors (atm mousepad and power). So I wondered if you could perhaps do a video on how to fix those . Best regards
@ Vignesh dhils - Yes, there's a HDMI, eSATA and two USB ports, but save your money, Toshiba no longer makes laptops so it's an orphan when it comes to support. Oh, and it runs pretty warm; overheating has always been a problem with these.
Darius Bagdonas !!! I still do in 2019 ! Slowing down a bit !! Suspect i need to do this and clean it out !!! Awesome laptop, My Friends love the Speakers sound !!!
worked a treat, cpu heat was touching 80 0c never below 50, now idles at 45 up to max of 60 degrees, issue loads of dust, hair and lint built up round fan and heat sink
I need to know how to replace the DC power jack but I cannot read the model or serial number, is it possible to order a replacement that is common to the Satellite models? This was a good video, thanks, I subscribed.
THANK YOU I figured out my problem only 4 minutes into your video.,. My Toshiba Satellite worked fine and then stopped charging but still ran until the battery ran out... Turns out that one of my two memory sticks came loose, and (even though I could still run it fine at that point), that was enough to prevent it from replenishing the battery. Weird but its fixed. :)
I have the exact same model laptop, disassembling it for the exact same reason, and my name is also Brian. Haha, anyway very helpful video. CPU temps are down. Thanks for your help.
Now you know why AMD nearly went bankrupt. You had the option of an intel cpu on the exact same model. If it wasn't for Bernanke and his zero interest rates all of these zombie companies would just go bankrupt.
You should never touch the contacts on the memory since the oils on your skin may damage the contacts over time. Every instruction booklet or pamphlet that comes with the memory warns NOT to touch the contacts. Wipe them off with a static-free cloth for more reliable results.
Great video. Many thanks! I found a ball of dust wedged between the fan exhaust and cooling unit the size of a grasshopper. My only issue, is that now my mousepad does not work. I've tried SHIFT ALT NUMLOCK with no result. The mousepad button works when i press it on or off....but it doesn't fix the issue.
Hi, Brian! I would like to thank you, the video which helped a lot in my mission to clean the cooling system of my Satellite A665 S6094. Unfortunately, due to my lack of experience, I damaged a very tiny black piece, which is responsible for making the flat cable steady. This flat cable connects the motherboard to the start/stop button. Because of that, sometimes my laptop works, sometimes doesn't. What is the name of this small piece? Where can I find it? By the way, cpu temp now is great.
The newer Toshibas you access the fan and heatsink from the bottom panel, after you unscrew keyboard. Hey, any idea where in SoFL you can get the ribbon cable, lock clip replacement for Toshiba L875?
I am thinking of attempting this with my Toshiba Satellite A665. It has an I7 core in it. Will it be rather similar to this video. Also I live in Houston, which is very humid, should I wing it like you did or ground myself against static? Thanks for this video...my toshiba is driving me bonkers.
This was really interesting. Just one thing though, you put all the parts back together and all the screws in. Yet you had one screw left in the plastic bin. How did you manage that?
Thank you, very informational, but I noticed you did forget the screws when putting the mobo back in. You had put the marks on it to not forget, but did forget. I know we aren't all perfect. I thank you very much and am trying to learn this.
Dude u are awesome! But tell me this, how do I reset the BIOS on an M105-S3041?! I've got it all torn apart looking for an answer and the only close thing to B500 by the RAM is a C500...is jumping those my answer?
shit man, you got my vote, all the way. Thanks for showing us a lot of video I check out about cleaning Cooling system sucks, but yours seem legit. I am a starting Tech, and ya I done over 50 PC I love the fixing. anything hardware like is great and fun, and I should talk to the client the same way you did, THAT IS A BIG Tip for me. Again thank you.
Battery is showing fully charged (is brand new) but laptop shuts down after 1 minute unplugged. web posts say it could be actually the bios battery is dead. Is the bios battery socketed or soldered leads?? Yes your video is still good 6 years later! FYI to All, I had no problems with win 10 pro upgrade.
Question,I have a Toshiba Satellite P755 and I am wanting to clean it with a can of compressed air, im still a noobie so what are your recommendations in the best, most detailed procedure on how I should clean it without removing the case/etc ( I do not have any anti-static bands/mats except a broken, unplugged laptop - cooling pad and a rubber-like HP mouse pad.)? Btw, the brand of compressed air is by " Dust - off ", Electronics capressed-gas.duster.
Hi, I have a small computer repair shop at the flea market by me and was wondering what you charge for this kind of repair so I know what to charge for this kind of repair? Thanks
Thank You for doing this video. I used to like to try to fix my own computer but this one seems like I would have to totally take it apart. I have a Toshiba now. I had thermal paste redone last year. Now my computer keeps turning off. Frustrating,
hi could you please give me more information about how to apply a CPU paste properly ? (how much, what i shouldn't do...) i'm doing this for the first time so i don't want to mess it up.
This is one more reason why I stick with desktop computers. It takes you at least 4 screws to access the CPU fan. As with laptops, you will be looking at unscrewing 20+ screws just to take the case off and more screws to achieve the same thing, which would be done and dusted less than 5 minutes in a standard desktop. Wow, so much work to do so you can clean the fan and replace a processor. LMAO! Good video by the way. :)
i like this video you did everything right....... but i would have taken apart the fan.... because you cant inside the fan unless you pull the housing apart. i learn my lesson because there was a very big dust ball inside the fan blade .you cant see it because the fan housing is in the way
Amazing! I am a graduate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and many times, I wish I could do that sort of repairs to my laptop, when it gets really warm and clogged! Experience is needed, as you said, to do this sort of job and most of the time, I am not willing to take the risk to do it myself :/ I wish I had the experience!
I'd replace the CPU on satellite L650 laptop. It is currently i3 330m. I'd like to put some of the following: i7 640m, i7 620m, i7 740QM, i7 720QM, i5 580m or i5 560m. Does this motherboard support any of the specified processors? Thanks for the answer.
Ausome video. Really enjoy your methods and commentary. Much respect to you and happy to subscribe and learn more. I am currently researching my Toshiba S55-B 5280. FAN STARTED Running really loud, however It wasn't hot. I take care my equipment like a baby, covered when not in use etc.. So I'm in the process of learning to take apart and check fan out. I am technically savvy and good with tools. My laptop is a litt different in that it's case is all brushed aluminum so I am not able to remove keyboard as it's recessed under the main body. So on i go to find a video on my exact make to learn the ins and outs. Thanks for your time and work. Peace and blessings. Wish me luck. Lol. 👍👍
Hello, I know this is a little late but I'm wondering if you could help me. I have a Toshiba Satellite L850. The fan has always been quiet as a mouse until it accidentally took a knock and now makes a very loud grindy sound. Iv taken it all apart but can't see anything obvious making the noise in the fan. Any suggestions I would massively appreciate.
I did all of this. There was alot of dust in the radiator/fan and i cleaned it very well. I also used the most expensive thermo paste. I reassembled the laptop and i am still getting a warning that there is a problem with the cooling system. What do you think I should do next? Are there any other components to the cooling system that may be failing? Heat sensors or something like that?
Did You remove ALL the old (silver) paste ? It's VERY important ! Then, when you applied the new paste, how much did you put on..just a very small amount is needed and it should JUST cover the CPU and GPU. If you can, look for any paste that was squished and forced outside the contact areas....it HAS to be removed and that's why only a VERY small amount should have been applied in the first place. You can also take a q-tip and remove any dust from the fan blades...it helps.
M Sanders i'll redo the past, it sound like i put too much. also my hdd is faulty i'm getting a SMART detect warning that the hdd needs to be replaced and will eventually fail. (SMART is a warning program that toshiba has if you do or don't know) then i found out that a failing or fautly hdd can be the cause of cooling problems too. (also ram in some cases). I just received a new hdd and plan to install it tonight, i'll also clean and reapply the "grain of rice" thermo paste method and i also replaced the fan prior to finding out that the hdd may be the problem.
Lonnie Beauchamp Ain't computers fun ? Most people won't tackle a laptop because they are afraid of them. You'll learn about most of them by just working on your own. I hope the new HD does the trick. I'm looking at a new Crucial SSD for mine...fast, low power usage and little heat. If you have the time, let me know how the new drive goes, I hope it works. Mike
M Sanders Well I replaced the hard drive and luckily i had recovery discs so that went fine. I did clean the cooling past and reapplied only an amount the size of a grain of rice to the cpu and gpu. I cleaned the fan is brand new and the area around the vent is all clean. With this partcular Toshiba Satelite I have a problem that I have read where others have but I have yet to see an answer that makes sense. The cooling system error still pops up and says there is a problem with your cooling system, shut down and return to manufacturer for repair. Well obviously i'm not going to return it. I bought this used to resell. Anyhow, the fan wont run at a proper medium pace. It starts up runs on 60-70% speed and shuts down to zero. It does this in 5 second intervals. If it would only run longer and more steadily it would be solved. Have you had this problem where it seems to be a program or something controlling the fan causing it to run and stop repeatedly?
Lonnie Beauchamp I've seen hardware controlled by an app in the OS and I've seen hardware controlled by CMOS. So, before the system comes up, go into setup (CMOS) and check settings. If nothing there, check the apps installed by the setup disks and see if there's anything in there. The comment of the guy just below this post has a bad MB and may sell it for parts. You might want to check with him and see what you can get his system for....His name is Michael Rowshan.
Can you make a video for resetting the forgotten CMOS password for Lenovo G560 20042 which does not have a battery and as is the cmos setup it only can boot from the main hard drive i.e. does not look for a bootable cdrom or usb.
Hello DIY Tech, i have an HP Envy dv7 and im having a little bit of a charging problem. Every time i plug my cord into my laptop it saying 9% Available (plugged in, not charging) but when i turn my laptop off it will charge regularly. Any idea on how to fix without taking my laptop apart. P.S. It is not the cord because i tested 2 hp cords on both of my HP 2000 and my envy dv7.

Thank you very much.
Great Video!
I was just wondering if you usualy use the Static strap, in this video i don't see it, thanx.
he is in florida. humid everyday. no static.

Thumbs up who still has this laptop in 2017
Darius Bagdonas In 2018 too 😝😎
@ Vignesh dhils - Yes, there's a HDMI, eSATA and two USB ports, but save your money, Toshiba no longer makes laptops so it's an orphan when it comes to support. Oh, and it runs pretty warm; overheating has always been a problem with these.
Still going through 2019...😩
Mine has been an absolute tropper! However been getting all sorts of blue screen errors this week. Think it is finally ready to go
Darius Bagdonas !!!
Looks so complicated yet so simple... Thanks man!
Awesome man! Glad to help! Thanks for the comment!
You should never touch the contacts on the memory since the oils on your skin may damage the contacts over time. Every instruction booklet or pamphlet that comes with the memory warns NOT to touch the contacts. Wipe them off with a static-free cloth for more reliable results.
We do it all the time without issue. Probably not a bad idea to stay clear of the contacts though.
That was my first thought as well. I wouldn't do it with someone else's machine, but I do it with mine all the time, also.
I usually set it aside, and once the alcohol swab comes out of the package I just start with the memory first before going to the other parts.
It was really helpful, thank you. I was able to clean out the whole thing and reassemble it. (Pretty good for a 12 year old yeah?)
Nice
Great video. Many thanks! I found a ball of dust wedged between the fan exhaust and cooling unit the size of a grasshopper.
My only issue, is that now my mousepad does not work. I've tried SHIFT ALT NUMLOCK with no result. The mousepad button works when i press it on or off....but it doesn't fix the issue.
Liked and Subscribed! Thank you for this tutorial! I was having frequent thermal events and this video saved me some serious cash!
Your videos are very handy, I'm also in South Florida-Avon Park.
For the keyboard ribbon cable - it’s a tiny white bar
Thanks to you and your awesome video, my laptop is now running like brand spanking new!
I am thinking of attempting this with my Toshiba Satellite A665. It has an I7 core in it. Will it be rather similar to this video. Also I live in Houston, which is very humid, should I wing it like you did or ground myself against static? Thanks for this video...my toshiba is driving me bonkers.
Anytime, my pleasure, thanks for watching and commenting!
This was really interesting. Just one thing though, you put all the parts back together and all the screws in. Yet you had one screw left in the plastic bin. How did you manage that?
brian your awesome thanks a lot. would u be able to post a viedo on replaceing the usb ports
Thank you, very informational, but I noticed you did forget the screws when putting the mobo back in. You had put the marks on it to not forget, but did forget. I know we aren't all perfect. I thank you very much and am trying to learn this.
OMG your voice is killing me !!! I enjoyed hearing you !! Thanks a lot
Is this a good thing?? Hopefully! Thanks!
Dude u are awesome! But tell me this, how do I reset the BIOS on an M105-S3041?! I've got it all torn apart looking for an answer and the only close thing to B500 by the RAM is a C500...is jumping those my answer?
You have a Great pair of hands and an excellent Brain to go with it. Thank you.
Thank you very much. My career as a hand model was crushed as I have a few scars. :)
Thumbs up, liked and subscribed. Great step by step instruction.
Great video, thanks. What type of thermal paste did you use?
Spectracool or Arctic silver.
What or where is the best way to get back panel replacement screws on one of these? I misplaced many and need to replace to hopefully use again. Thx .
shit man, you got my vote, all the way.
Found this video very informative and resourceful! Do you have a website?
Or is this website on your description your own company?
Howdy! I need to change the CMOS battery in my Toshiba PSLC8U-01M017. Where is it, and do you have any videos to help?
Thanks! You just helped me fix my sister's computer!
@lyaacoubicham - Yes this should work fine for that model. Thanks for commenting, and let us know how it goes!
This video definitely earned you a subscriber
Thank You. For a job well done. A clear, step by step video.
* compressed
I have a toshiba satellite L855, do i need to take out the RAM and everything like you did if i only want to clean the fan?
I really like the screw-box you have made!!
nice video... it helps me lot without any problem... thanks men...
Could u give a link to ebay for the 2 tools, u use to remove wires, and take the keyboard off?
Hi, I have a small computer repair shop at the flea market by me and was wondering what you charge for this kind of repair so I know what to charge for this kind of repair? Thanks
Thank You for doing this video. I used to like to try to fix my own computer but this one seems like I would have to totally take it apart. I have a Toshiba now. I had thermal paste redone last year. Now my computer keeps turning off. Frustrating,
AMD nearly went bankrupt next time buy a Toshiba laptop with an intel chip for a cpu they run a lot cooler and the thermal paste won't gel.
Please give an advice which thermal compound to buy and where.
hi could you please give me more information about how to apply a CPU paste properly ? (how much, what i shouldn't do...) i'm doing this for the first time so i don't want to mess it up.
This is one more reason why I stick with desktop computers. It takes you at least 4 screws to access the CPU fan. As with laptops, you will be looking at unscrewing 20+ screws just to take the case off and more screws to achieve the same thing, which would be done and dusted less than 5 minutes in a standard desktop. Wow, so much work to do so you can clean the fan and replace a processor. LMAO! Good video by the way. :)
i like this video you did everything right....... but i would have taken apart the fan.... because you cant inside the fan unless you pull the housing apart. i learn my lesson because there was a very big dust ball inside the fan blade .you cant see it because the fan housing is in the way
Love watching your videos
You have to try to gain experience. Jump in with both feet!
How often you have to change the thermal paste? I haven't done my one since I bought my Toshiba Satellite L500.
About every 3 years or if starts overheating before then.
Lol. 👍👍
Hi,what precautions you take for static electricity ?
i ripped by mistake the keyboard black wire thing from it connector. is it fixeble?
Hello, I know this is a little late but I'm wondering if you could help me. I have a Toshiba Satellite L850. The fan has always been quiet as a mouse until it accidentally took a knock and now makes a very loud grindy sound. Iv taken it all apart but can't see anything obvious making the noise in the fan. Any suggestions I would massively appreciate.
great vid, helped me with that keyboard/top panel removal :)
hi tnx b4 all and i wont to download this video when i can please?
