2:01 this is what happens if the backlight stays powered on, but the supply voltage to the panel itself is shut off or there's no or a corrupt LVDS video signal anymore, a combination that normally shouldn't happen. What you're seeing is the panel stopping to refresh/control the pixels, so they fade till they return to their natural state. Usually indicates a broken flex cable to the panel, but not always
A very scary error in the Southwind CDOS line was the kill screen meltdown, instead of pressing any key in this screen, we trigger it by Command+SysManage+F5 (for desktop computers, it is Command+FuncKey 3) and it affects the LVDS video signal. Causing the meltdown, but doesn't display vertical lines. After 40 seconds it will shut down.

Nice restoration! That wa a great laptop back in its day - and yes I do believe that Windows 95 (or 98) was the correct operating system to use. This was back when manufacturers added lots of ports to their laptops, as well as made them durable and upgradable. I'm also fully aware on how Li-Ion batteries work; I have an old Packard Bell laptop from the Windows XP era, and that refuses to charge anymore due to it being left too low for too long. When I did finally get it charged (using an external charging method), it lasted less than 30 minutes, then went to a low level (again) and refused to charge. So it's important that you take care of your Li-Ion batteries to make sure they don't deplete too much and/or the cells become imbalanced over time.

Wow this brings back memories.. the very first laptop I had from work back around 2000... This thing was a pleasure to use, never had a problem, travelled with me in 3 continents, lots of pleasant and some less pleasant moments. Didn't have a LAN adapter built-in iirc , and that was a huge problem even back in the day as PCMCIA LAN adapters were expensive (the good ones from 3COM at least) and thus not allowed! No USB at that time... It is really dismaying how this almost universal and most practical standard (USB) is now deprecated as obsolete...
I used to have this laptop as a kid and I loved the hell out of it, I lost it at some point and couldn't for the life of me remember what the model was. Thanks! Now I can go look this guy up on eBay...
Even today he is happy. Older games or office software are still usable. I have a dell latitude with a 200mmx pentium and tucked away waiting for me to enjoy it again.
I had a lot of Floppy Discs like 70+ and never thought they would be so important and used to play with them and break or lose them but now I have only couple of them and I know how precious the are
I remember first time that I've seen laptop back in 96-97. It was Compaq. Laptops back in those days were beautiful and had X factor, the way they were built, sounds that they made.. everything. That made me fall in love with them. Today's laptops are just soulless and I am indifferent towards them.
This was so cool to watch. Having an old Windows is good for files that you want to keep secret etc as I highly doubt anyone would think of hacking this type of laptop.
I had one of these up until 2009. It was an x government unit my parents bought secondhand. The battery had long died when I inherited around 2006. From memory, it shipped with windows 98 but the windows it had on It when we got it was windows 2000. It was probably quite a popular unit in Brisbane and the surrounding areas because Australian Computer Traders refurbished government and business units - teachers from memory could salary sacrifice units from there as well.
Back then, that was probably top of the line. Computers were bigger back then and though I'm paused at the "multiple ports" bit, truthfully, it doesn't have that many. Just from the back, it looks like you got an old printer port, one for an external monitor, and a few others. The reason it feels like "lots" is because it was reflective of the price point and where the tech was. We weren't using USB for absolutely everything yet, (In fact, I'm not even sure we had USB). and every peripheral device needed to be hard connected, typically with some sort of serial port. Considering that wifi was somewhat new even in the early 00's, you have to bear these things in mind. Desktops were doubling their RAM, ROM and CPU numbers quickly, so yeah, upgradability was important, but that wasn't something done with laptops. In the 00's we had a bajillion USB ports, as we truly swapped over to the new connections, but by 2010's we started dropping them like crazy, (mostly because Apple wanted to make the Air ridiculously thin, and then later it turned out tcomputers weren't really used as a programming device or a hub connecting electronics, but just terminals to gain access to the internet). I mean I love me some USB connections and I ADORE having a BR/DVD-R drive as part of my laptop, but honestly, what would I connect with them? Other hard drives? And what discs would I play? I'm already worried about what media I have on disk succumbing to rot in the next 10 years, (and that's a LOT of media that needs to be transferred and preserved, but a separate discussion) and most of that I never play, (and if I do it's on the larger TV I have not the tiny laptop display).
Toshiba is my favourite brand bcs my grandfather had a toshiba windows 7 laptop. When he passed away in December 2012, we got the laptop. unfortunately, we don't hav it any more bcs it was so old I think it just couldn't handle today's online world. Miss him and his laptop.
Before I sent my last laptop for recycling, I physically removed the hard drive and I gave it several sharp blows from a hammer, before disposing of it separately from the computer.
@@williamharris8367 Quite violent and e-waste promotive, but yeah that definitely would do the trick. There’s always also just doing several passes off DBAN to fill the drive all with 0s and prevent someone from getting whatever personal data it once had.

What my mom thinks what would happen if I download something on her laptop: 1:51
same, My mom doesn't like anything from the internet to be downloaded.
I don’t even use my moms laptop and she is like “ Did you do something to my computer????”

I had a lot of Floppy Discs like 70+ and never thought they would be so important and used to play with them and break or lose them but now I have only couple of them and I know how precious the are
im sooo early. hello Australia
@@studmuffin4309 hello hehe
I used to have this laptop. The keyboard was really nice to write with. I used it during the 2000s and it wasn’t even slow. Good times. 👍

Yep, he is just a kid. A smart one but a kid hehe
Not to be a dick or anything but this isnt that hard to do.
Maybe he graduated college

Thank everyone I was in the mood and it utilizes so much ping pong lol 😂 thank you for all the time I was in church 🍤😶🌫️😎
I remember first time that I've seen laptop back in 96-97. It was Compaq. Laptops back in those days were beautiful and had X factor, the way they were built, sounds that they made.. everything. That made me fall in love with them. Today's laptops are just soulless and I am indifferent towards them.
I have a slightly newer version of this laptop!! I've been wanting to get it running for a while! You've inspired me to get it running.
Did you?
These kinds of laptops are quiet rare now i got so much nostalgia watching this
I love the camera work in these videos
This was so cool to watch.
Having an old Windows is good for files that you want to keep secret etc as I highly doubt anyone would think of hacking this type of laptop.
I saw these on the auctions being sold off, nice restoration btw!
OK the title alone is intriguing enough. I remember these behemoths. Can't wait!
Old toshiba laptops bring back some memories, my first laptop was a Toshiba Satellite A80 back in 2005
The guy who owned it previously took a really good care of this old beauty.
Toshiba is my favourite brand bcs my grandfather had a toshiba windows 7 laptop. When he passed away in December 2012, we got the laptop. unfortunately, we don't hav it any more bcs it was so old I think it just couldn't handle today's online world. Miss him and his laptop.
This brings back memories, I used to have the very same model
Having to bend a pin back on a hard drive was all the work I had to do for a “HDD Wiped” laptop. Lovely lovely data.
Before I sent my last laptop for recycling, I physically removed the hard drive and I gave it several sharp blows from a hammer, before disposing of it separately from the computer.
@@williamharris8367 Quite violent and e-waste promotive, but yeah that definitely would do the trick. There’s always also just doing several passes off DBAN to fill the drive all with 0s and prevent someone from getting whatever personal data it once had.
toshiba has invented so many legendary laptops and those are our memories..i dont have this but i have toshiba satellite c660 and it holds charge about 1 hr.and played so many games likely need for speed most wanted 2012 perfectly..and it also runs windows 11(without tpm 2.0,installed other way).Toshiba laptops are so compatible..Thats the plus mark of Toshiba.
I use to use and sell many Toshiba laptop's in the nineties. That high resolution scrolling you noticed was normal in those days!
Toshiba makes the most durable laptops change my mind.
I have a Toshiba Satellite from 2005 that still works like a champ.
I love this old technology ! Keep making great videos ;)
You are lucky that you get to repair new pieces of technology every week.
3:04 I have that monitor it's used on a computer from 1999 it only works on old computers.
I had windows 95 at one time or another. It’s nice to see such an old pc work like new
