    Ever run a marathon while wearing a coat ? That's your laptop when it's blocked up, full of dust . Regarding compressed air, yes it will work. But this video was meant for people/students who don't have access to compressed air, whose laptops have shut down or slowed to a crawl due to an overheating condition because of an internal lack of cooling airflow due to a dust buildup. This is a TEMPORARY SOLUTION.
    IMPORTANT NOTE! There is always a possibility that the laptop fan could become "jammed-up" with the dust that is blown back from the processor heat sink while doing this cleaning procedure, so be warned! The odds are very slight, but they ARE there! If this situation occurs, I would (and have in the past) used a vacuum hose (gently) from something like a shop vac, or something similar to get the dust off the fan allowing it to spin free (not a hair drier, not strong enough). Myself, I would power off the laptop, place the vacuum suction near the "fan inlet" vents, and then outlet vents in an alternating fashion (gently) to achieve this. The vacuum should dislodge and break up the dust, and the fan will start to spin. DO NOT let the fan spin up at a fast rate of speed as damage to the fan could occur. I have never had to take a laptop apart because of a dust build-up. If you do have access to compressed air, your efforts will be reduced. Unfortunately compressed air isn't available everywhere, and usually not late at night before an essay is due!

    Usually, by the time you're getting a shutdown from heat, the thermal compound is toast + the fan is backed up with dust. There are also many laptops which do NOT have the vent over the cooling fan, so blowing through a straw is going to do nothing but shift dust further into the chassis, where it will again become lodged in the fan on next power-on. It's always better to disassemble to thoroughly clean the fan area and to replace the thermal compound.

    Just wanted to thank you. My laptop is a couple of years old, and I live out in the desert where it's dusty, dirty. A few days ago my laptop started shutting itself off and restarting for no reason I could think of.
    I googled it, which led me to this video.
    I followed your instructions, {except for the bread thing}, and sure enough, all kinds of dust and dirt came blowing outta the vents on the bottom of the darn thing.
    Has not shut off and restarted for a couple of days now. I guess that was indeed the problem....dusty dirty cooling vents.
    So, thank you very much. You may have saved me a grip of dough.

    Thanks. I use a) hoover with a narrow brushed bit. This helps removing chunks of dust from PCs that were never cleaned for 7-15 years. b) a self and pupil made air blower made from broken Dell Otiplex tower cases. Those had big fans with plastic side covers to help you hold it. Just had to find an adapter from a non-working laptop. This blows dust really well on tower PCs. c) compressed air. d) Own lungs for tower PCs. This requires strong lungs and resistance to fatigue/faint. That option is the worst case scenario since you would pick your nose afterwords to free it from dust. Don't forget to close your eyes when blowing and do this in open air only. Now I will use straw. It makes sense since the pressure through a tiny hole in the straw would be way greater than that of mouth. Plus, it would be directed pressure, not scattered.

    If you suspect your laptop is shutting down because of an "overheating condition", the laptop will usually run fine for the first few minutes, then, it will freeze and/or shut down. Also, the top of the laptop near the "warm air exhaust vent" will usually become quite warm to the touch. There are other reasons why a laptop could be shutting down (software/hardware failures), but overheating is BY FAR the most common cause out there. To ensure that overheating is not the cause, please verify that the following is true.
    1:- Is your laptop fan ever "loud" or have a "racing sound", especially before the laptop shuts off?
    2; - Is your fan blowing air at all just before the laptop shuts down? If it isn't the fan could be stuck with dust, or it could be defective.
    3; - When the fan is blowing air, do you feel lots of WARM air, or very little HOT air coming out of the exhaust vent? (as airflow slows down and the temperatures rise, the fan will race, and the output air will become quite HOT!)
    The fan should usually NEVER race, unless the laptop itself is working very hard at processing or gaming.
    Good luck!

      My laptop does not usually shut off because of heat, but it has been getting increasingly hot (enough to burn me if I putt hand o the vent) and the secondary fan is ALWAYS on now, and very loud right from when I turn the computer on. Any suggestions? Thanks for the vid.

    • @mysimplefix
      @mysimplefix  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** excessively hot temperatures are a sure sign of a lack of airflow. Either a fan is unable to move air because it is full of dust or it's defective (unable to spin up to speed), an inlet vent or the discharge vent is plugged (on the "inside" of the heat sink). I would be sure to put most of my effort into blowing the air "backwards" through that warm air discharge vent, as in most cases it gets totally plugged with dust on the inside. Let us know how you make out.

    I'm asked the SAME question by so many people, "Will this method work on my particular model laptop?" The answer to everyone is... "if your laptop pulls air in, and expels air out using its fan, then yes this method I would definitely do to eliminate the possibility of overheating due to a dust build-up". Laptops need to breathe. Try putting a heavy coat on and running around a track. You'll overheat too! Some people have "comments to their replies" disabled, so I'm unable to respond to them. This is the only way I can answer their question (in this paragraph).

    • @mysimplefix
      @mysimplefix  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm.I can reply here! Did you blow out your laptop?

    • @mysimplefix
      @mysimplefix  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      You said you are blowing into the fan? That is important too, but make sure that you are especially paying attention to the warm air "exhaust vent". It is behind the fins inside that vent where the majority of the dust usually builds up!

    • @mysimplefix
      @mysimplefix  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A vacuum will work for all the other vents EXCEPT the warm air discharge vent at the CPU heat sink. Putting a vacuum to the warm air discharge vent is like trying to pull dust directly through a filter. Not possible. It must be blown backwards. The air must be blown in the "opposite direction" . Also, vacuums are a big source of static electricity which may damage electronic components, so be careful!.

    • @mysimplefix
      @mysimplefix  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Virus removal can be VERY difficult! Just saying.. As a basic approach, try to run "system restore" back to a time before this weird stuff started happening. If successful, immediately run a FULL scan using the Microsoft Malicious software removal tool (Microsoft.com/downloads). This will take hours! Then I would reset Internet Explorer settings, as well as other browser settings. Do full windows updates, then update Adobe reader and flash, and update Java. You need to close all the vulnerable areas to keep the virus contained. I've had good luck using Malwarebytes, spybot s & d 1.6. 2 from www.safer-networking.org/dl/ just keep hammering away with the scans until no more viruses are found....OR....restore your laptop with a previously backed up image. You did back up your computer didn't you?

    If you have any doubts, always check with the manufacturer of your laptop to verify where your "exhaust vent/warm air discharge vent" is. Once you do know, this is the only method I can suggest for safely/effectively dislodging a build-up of dust from the "inside" of the CPU heat sink and fan (other than using compressed air, or physically taking your laptop apart for service). One must always use caution "if" using compressed air, as the possibility of causing damage to components increases as the air pressures increase. This method of blowing air into the exhaust vent dislodges the dust build-up by driving it in the opposite direction in which it was deposited. Good luck!

    WHY THE HELL DIDN'T I SEE THIS BEFORE I SHELLED OUT $80 FOR A NEW BATTERY! My Toshiba started to shut down after only a few minutes when on battery power. I hadn't really noticed that the fan was getting louder and the exhaust air hotter. I was told - and believed- that my battery was shot. I ordered a new one ( which arrived today) THEN I watched this video. I didn't follow the instructions exactly; instead I held a vacuum a short distance away from (and NOT right against) the intakes and exhaust vents. But man, the dust just FLEW out of the holes. The fan is now silent, the small amount of air exiting the vent is relatively cool. I now have a spare battery and I'm out $80.

    Every laptop with a fan needs it's intake vents (located underneath) clear from "any" restrictions to airflow. Many people out there have a habit of using their laptops on their beds. This completely blocks airflow! To allow good intake airflow, you must put your laptop on a large flat tray/big book/flat surface/desk/or a laptop cooling pad for the best cooling performance. This method, combined with help from this video, will ensure a good laptop performance (with respect to overheating/staying cool).

    EVERYONE please read! (3 tips) 1, EVERY LAPTOP that has a cooling fan MUST be able to stay cool by pushing an "airflow" with its fan past internal cooling fins and components. A severe dust build-up WILL block this effect. It's just like YOU putting on a winter coat in the hot weather and working as hard as you can. You won't be able to do it for long without overheating. 2, a can of compressed air would be just fine to use for laptops (if available), but this video shows an effective method for people WHO DON'T HAVE ACCESS to compressed air, possibly students late at night. 3, Laptops were never designed to require dismantling to remove a dust build-up. Google search any laptop manufacturers website and you will see this is true! Here is a link to demonstrate cleaning with compressed air. support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01657439

      OMG I think I can save my Laptop YEAH !! Quote :If you suspect your laptop is shutting down because of an "overheating condition", the laptop will usually run fine for the first few minutes, then, it will freeze and/or shut down ... That is what mine is doing . I was told by Phone Teck support it's the mother board going ? I pay $ 15 dollars a month for their service on my phone :{ If after I clan it & find out that's what it was ... well all I have to say is - The person that told me that is not going to have a Very Good Day . Only because I to rent another one until I can find one I can afford .. Grrrrrrrrrr more money . Rant Over thanks I subbed / liked :)

    I can't believe it actually works. I had two forced shutdowns and didn't know what to do. Noted that my laptop was overheating as hell, the air coming out from the fan (I'm talking about a vaio i3 laptop) was hot, the keyboard was burning and there always were that brrrrrrrrr sound even when idle.
    Take my laptop upside down, did what is in this video and magically there is not that awful sound, and the laptop is cooler. I recommend to monitor cpu's temperatures. Didn't do that before but I guess one learns from experience.

I'm trying to fix an old HP Pavilion g6 (I believe you are using one in the video, which I find funny) which seems to have serious heating issues. I don't have a lot of experience in fixing laptops, but if you have any advice I'd appreciate it! The computer can literally sit with nothing open and start to overheat, and blow hot air through the fan, and be very loud.

    I had my laptop taken in for fan cleaning. No problem, he said. When I picked it up, he porudly showed me a hair ball he claimed came out. After that, my PC kept shutting down. I later learned that to get to the fan, he had to get past the heat sink and when he put it back together, he neglected to apply heat sink paste. So anything you can do to avoid tearing the whole laptop apart is worth a try.
    Thanks for your tip.

    I will try this. It's exactly as you said in one of your comments, laptop stays on for a couple of minutes then just shuts down without any notice. A technician (I don't know if he's any good honestly) had a look at it and said it was indeed the fan, he made a vent where the fan is, it worked for about a day then returned to spontaneously turning off
