You will be completely fine if you know how to drive. I'm stage 2 with 170,00km stock clutch, and only now does it slip in low rpm in 6th when the clutch is warm (driving for 1+hrs and pushing the car)
@vhjioa that's great I'm also fine. It's funny how so many "experts" in this community will say "you will need a clutch with stage 1" - or, (once you tune your car the clutch will be gone"
@Jonny R1 really depends what you want out of the car. More you want to feel the tq/pull the more your clutch could slip. Why have the power to always have the thought in your head. Imo best clutch is Sachs SRE. Upgraded disc and pressure plate, reuses an oem flywheel for oem drivability and cost effectiveness. Then you can dump the clutch on occasion and floor it in lower rpms. 1000% worth it. I think I paid 600+500 install. Never slipped and sold the car 35k miles later. Jb4 made my mk7.5 slip. Hopefully you’re upgrading that N engine. I can assure you 2 things. 1. The warranty will 100% be voided. 2. If it’s the turbo model that engine won’t be able to handle much. This is coming from someone who “doesn’t” work at a Hyundai dealership and “isn’t” a tech for them.
Also those 2.0T engines are fun and all but we have a STACK of RO’s of cars with the 2.0T engine that need to be replaced. We had one that came in with barely over 2K miles and there was deep deep scoring on the cylinder walls I’m talking vertical/horizontal scoring I’ve never seen that before on cylinder walls. @@BasedEMT1776 the twinskies will do that. Us single sneezers don't get that lucky. But still, 100whp is crazy. I remember in the 90, you were lucky to grab 10-15hp from a tune. But the turbos weren't very efficient in those days.
Why is this a big surprise? Seemed to work on the TDI.
The R is 4wheel drive! How it can turn only at the front wheels on the speed bank?
If you decide to tune your Mark 8 Golf R can you keep both Tunes in the car, one for 91 octane and one for 93 octane and switch back and forth, just in case you're travelling and you can't find a 93 station?
No to the channel. But I love you content!
That's crazy torque dude!
Considering that I gave about 410 in my only software tunes BMW 2.0D...an old E87.
As soon as I have saved up for some more parts. The the goal is north of 300 🐎 at the wheels and a out 530-560 in torque. That in a car with about 3200 lbs ready to drive. All fun with the rears. 🎉
1 month ago bout 1.6TDI PASSAT VW 2014 and just picked up after the replacement of clutch and soon as picked up eletrical problem with turbo......crying
Thanks for the video. Can you elaborate on how the clutch held up or not. Maybe a longer term update after a few weeks of spirited driving
I've heard since the mk7 gti's/r's the stock (manual)clutch basically acts like a fuse and is all but guaranteed to blow if you're running a stage 1 tune, let alone stage 2
If I had 3 wishes. this mechanic 👨🔧 would be one of them lol 😆
Great video! Making my mouth water for when my Tiguan R arrives,, yes, I said it,, Tiguan, don't hate me!.
What wheels have you got there? What is the weight of them and roughly what weight should I be aiming for for my Mk7 gti for a good performance gain? , I currently still have the 18" stock rims.
Whatever dealer did the work to your mk7.5 and it’s TD1 status and they did warranty for drivetrain related component that warranty claim will be kicked back to them and voided, I work at a dealer and we have to be super careful with cars with TD1 status. As soon as I run the check warranty information test on address 1 the engine control module and it shows up TD1 I write that in my story instantly so I can’t be to blame if someone tries claiming warranty on something.
Can't wait until UnitedMotorsport gets to tuning these. UM tuned my 2012 R, and it felt like no other R I ever drove.
I love UM software. It’s just hard to work with them on somethings
@@HumbleMechanic Original owner of my R was friends with a UM Tuner in PA. They used my old R to make some of the base maps. It also had a 1 of 1 APR RSC Exhaust that was the demo from Corsa Exhaust in Berea Ohio. Was a sick car. I really regret selling it.
Charles you should check jdengineering in the netherlands. They just went crazy with the 8 r and got about 410 hp and 520 nm with just a stage 1 map
a video showed up in my recommended a few weeks ago of a guy in the UK chasing 500bhp on stock turbo with his 8R
is that BHP or WHP?
@@psnmadracer27 HGP from Germany did 444HP/564nm in early 2021 and stage 2 in 12/2021 with 526hp/630nm. They also have stage 1 for etronGT & Taycan turbo s 850ho/1050nm. idk how they are this much ealier than others. there stage1 mk8 R released 1year earlier than all other tuning companies in EU...
@@nickbea3443i thought it was just bhp
@@dutchone7699 It then gets a lot more complicated trying to equate US dyno runs with Euro ones. I'd wait until 034 maps are available in Europe and mapped for 99 Ron fuel to see if they are any different.
to the JD output
Would have liked to see how the spark plugs looked before and after w stage 2..
maybe we will check when we do bolt ons.
Have you guys worked on 5.7 hemis? How much hp and torque gain? My 2006 chrysler 300c is said to have stock 340hp and 390 torque. I have a pedal response and my resonators plus mufflers removed. But necessarily what gains have you seen with the 5.7 hemi similar to mine before and are these tunes worth it as well what Is the typical price to tune one? I been debating on adding a cam to my car but if a tune can add more for less I will go down that route instead
I am eagerly awaiting a tune for an 8Y RS3, in the UK we are seeing MK8 DSG Golf R with TCU software getting 400 BHP.
Great content as usual thanks for taking us on your Golf R journey. Hoping you can give me your thoughts on clutch longevity on a Mk7.5 manual with a stage 1 APR tune. I'm very stoked to do it, but would rather not have to replace my clutch at 30k miles. Keep up the awesome work!
Got a 2016 Seat Leon Cupra 290 Stage 1+ tuned by BSR (APR equivalent in Sweden) with a measured output of 350 HP and 430 Nm torque according to DIN Norm. Been tuned since 2018. I've driven it twice on the track last summer and I like to do motorway pulls every now and again. It is also my daily driver in varied traffic with almost 70k miles. NO clutch issues or any wear indication what so ever.
Same clutch rating since mk5. Sad.
Yo, this just showed up in my feed. I have not in the slightest clue the first thing about tuning a car. But I was thinking about getting a type R
another excellent video. love your honesty. would you prefer the mk8 over the 7.5 as a daily thst will do 2-4 track events a year?
I would! The mk8 is so awesome. If my 7.5 was not a special color I’d have sold it
I love how every time he goes to the dyno he always mentions the Jetta 😂
May I ask why 034 over unitronic? Personally went uni but debated switching for the e file. Got a clutch first cause obvious reasons but was curious on the reasoning
I mean, competition is good for the market and probably had a sponsorship opportunity for 034! Nothing wrong with that IMO
@@ependergrass I want to switch to 034 strictly for the e file but waiting on my upgraded clutch first. Was just curious if it’s cause the sema sponsorship or not
A year later I'm looking more closely at boost/torque by gear.. I need it all in 2nd gear or the tune won't help me at all at autocross 🤣
Alright. I'll be honest. I see the title, I click on the video and get the answer in the first 5 seconds of the video.
Now THAT is something you don't see nowadays around.
Needless to say, I stuck around until the end of the video because I didn't feel baited into watching the rest, I did it out of pleasure.
Subbed & thanks for the video.
Thank you!!! LOL I felt like it was a gamble for sure. HAHAHA
Very cool! wondering if this tune would apply to the 22 Arteon (aside from DSG tune)?
I have the most basic piggy backs on my 911(3 plug) and Veloster N (2 plug) ( not JB4 ) Both cars drive amazing never had any kind of drivability issues. I didn't want to go with a ECU tune because of warranty issues. I went with the easiest to install so I can remove them easily if I need to take the car to the stealership for something.
But definitely smart to have a easy tune to where you can take it out before taking it to the dealership. I’ve seen guys bring their cars in and just have left their COBB shit in the in car.
@@thatoneguythatwasntlikewow5167 The whole point of me buying this car was to see how bad or good a modern Hyundai really is. I never buy the same car twice so I want to try every brand I can. Im used to Porsche prices where everything is $10-$20k so I can handle any unexpected expense. Modded since day one now at 12K mikes and its been super fun and no issues to report.
@@norevlimitr1602 I’m definitely interested in how long it holds. Maybe tuning it corrects their fuck up lmao
@@thatoneguythatwasntlikewow5167 I put a reminder in my phone to update this on 1/31/2028 will be 5 years after I bought the car.
I love me a fresh video!
We all do.
What was the fuel mileage diff with the 034 tune? And what springs are on the Mk8?
So when you say, "You need a new clutch", are you actually saying you are GOING TO need a new clutch (at some point in the future) or are you saying you need a more robust clutch immediately (and, if so, what do you recommend)?
Can you show more GTI content? I want to tune my mk8 but want to know if I can put the tune you did for the R on my GTI?
Different file but exact same process
maybe i missed it.. did you upgrade the clutch? i keep hearing about crank walk on the R's... has me worried
Time for a Stage 2 Clutch and Stage 2 tune. 👌
I highly recommend the Stage 3 (Southbend) clutch with an APR Stage 2 because it gives you a comfortable margin of error and a lot of piece of mind. The only disadvantage is that the Stage 3 clutch is pretty heavy until it's broken in.
When putting my MK8 on the dyno, in "dyno mode" the transmission won't go past 1st gear no matter what (DSG), is there something else that needs to be done to make the trans play with the dyno mode?
Wish I could but couldnt have a mk7 golf launch edition! A racingline full intake elbow muffler delete ect I run only 93oct. But looking to get full downpipe, exhaust and tune stage 2 hopefully! I want the dual exist of the gti but dont want to also buy a new bumper part but also don't want to remove it to fit the exhaust!
So genuine question I'm now to this whole thing. Was the intake install and exhaust not already voiding your warranty?
Void no. I’ve seen intakes make for wonky check engine lights. Mostly on TDI
Great video as always 👍 if I end up buying a mk8 golf R it’s all your fault 😂
Damn it’s destuned in the USA? Could also be down to the lower fuel quality in the USA
Incredible!!! Awesome!!! 👍👍👍
could it be done on a 2018 Golf SportWagen? Been fun to crank the power on my wife's SportWagen up to my Volvo XC70 T6 Polestar tune wagon
Does TD1 (getting marked as tuned by VW) void the extended warranty on the water pump?
have you considered performance by integrated engineering? I have heard great things about their stage 1 software…
His yellow car had the stage 2 from them. You can see the parts in his video.
2:00 the right mirror blinker just died 😂
When 034 tunes the motor, do they tune the DSG with it? I’m a newbie to Golf Rs but been looking to possibly buy one.
Great video!!!
Not this generation
How strong is the Mk8 engine. How much power can be pushed before changing internals??
"I need to be careful" said the same thing when I went e on my mk7 😂
Great vid thanks. Dumb question, how does one dyno a Haldex equipped awd car on just the front? Has this car had a fwd conversion or something?
It’s got a “dyno mode” that cuts the rear wheels for this exact thing
Pretty awesome bro. ❤
I want to tune my manual 24 Golf R. Is your OEM clutch still functional and which
tune would you suggest(91 Stage 1) without pops and bangs. Thank you.
Hey there buddy! Why can’t a find a tune for my 2016 Jetta Sport 1.8T? Help me out and point me in the right direction please! FANTASTIC VIDEO MY BROTHER! 👍
Odd that unitronic or Apr doesn’t have a file
@@HumbleMechanic APR said there wasn’t enough of an increase to validate marking a tune.
DO they have a DSG tune for it yet? I believe they really help the overall feeling as well. Maybe a throttle enhancer for a nice trio.
I’m not sure they’ve released it yet
@@HumbleMechanic I am glad in some ways that my new 2023 car still uses some old VW tech. With some investigation it seems the DSG tune is available for the Ateca as well as ECU from Apr, together called a stage 1+. I can take it further after warranty expired... I will wait 6 months though just to make sure the car is not a lemon. I would love to eventually go stage 2. I think 3 is a bit much cause a lot of hardware needs changing. Thanks for the reply. Nice car, congrats. I wish I could sit in one but if I do I can't get out again (6ft 4 with lower back issues) which is why I needed a higher car.
Can the dealership tell if you have your tunes on a separate ECU? And you always swap before going to the dealership
470 HP 580 nm on stage 2 on 102 octane here in Netherlands
Wow euro 8Rs are much higher on the dyno stock. 330s if memory serves.
I am a noob to the tuning scene, Why does the factory horsepower of turbo cars are much lower than their capability? Is the reason Reliability? or Emissions?
Did the Mk7 R's come with less power in the USA than Europe? 273 HP sounds really low, we had them in Europe with 300 HP with consistent numbers around that mark on dynos.
Charles, is our 99 octane in UK equivalent to 93 the US?
Why did the 7.5 not make over 300 stock, was that wheel horsepower?
Cheers buddy
I thought the same thing, I’m from the UK also. Mine should be around 305 bhp stock, why was his so low to begin with?? I’m getting mine mapped tomorrow and it should make around 370 bhp 470nm of torque!
The price difference tho… 7.5 gti with those bolt ons is a third of the price of a stock 8 R, sure awd but still I would take the 7.5
Same, I'm running a modded IS38 with custom tune and I'm very happy with it.
I got a audi a3 with is38 apr 93 high torque, remap at 31k update software at 130k, and I got over 156k with 0 problems I push my cars weekly.
7.5 awd r then. Gti, only good for over 60 otherwise rubbish
What's the point of dynoing canned tunes? Does 034 tune remotely?
Does SimOS Tools or VW_Flash work on the MK8 SimOS 19.6 ECUs or could you put an SimOS 18 ECU in a MK8?
358lb/ft or 368lb/ft? I saw a couple different graphics.
Damn may have missed placed the graph 😖
stock Manual set up is fine with 91 file ?
I know R is FWD biased AWD, but how are only front wheels pulling here?
It’s got a dyno mode for this exact thing
Brilliant! " thoughts ls and prayers with your clutch " that made me laugh
For real. I had a JB4 on my MK7 R and that alone was enough to fry the clutch.... and they use the same clutch in the MK8 :/
I heard they’re coming out with flex fuel for the R? is that something you’re gonna do? also a clutch video would be awesome! I did the clutch in my mk7 r so i’m assuming it’s almost exactly the same. looking at a mk8 R when I get to texas
Yep. Working with unitronic on it
@@HumbleMechanic awesome! can’t wait for the video! looking at getting another mk4 r32 or doing the mk8 next year
How is the clutch doing? Is there a clutch that can withstand that TQ and still have a dual mass flywheel?
