Finally 10K subscribers, well done, and about time! As you usually sometimes do a Halloween video some suggestions for a "Scary Steve" soiree. The Uninvited, The Haunting, Die, Die Die My Darling, Night of the Living Dead, or one of my favorites Rosemary 's Baby!! Rosemary's Baby(Mia Farrow) was one of the best performances ever to not be nominated for an academy award, A good year for actresses that year. Thanks for putting out such uplifting videos in these challenging times. Cheers!

Always such a joy to see a new video from you, Steve. I also adore Judy's energetic number from this picture. Whenever someone is trying to force a trivial opinion on me or debate some meaningless minutiae, I tend to reply, "Judy in a red dress, baby." Those that laugh I know are fellow movie buffs who understand I was actually saying, "I don't care! I don't care!!" :D
Steve Hayes is a spark of light and fun and charisma that we all need right now. And John gets more handsome in every video. I really like this movie and I'm so glad to see it here. Thanks for pulling this one out. I loved the video. Please take care and stay safe.
When I was a kid, I loved watching Spring Byington movies on TV after school. This actress was so vivacious that she stole every scene she was in. Nothing would have pleased me more than to sit through a Spring Byington Film Festival. At that point, I knew I was NOT like the other boys! LOL
Well, I always was obessed with the character women as well, so we're probably in the ssame boat. Though mine were usually the female villiains, my favorite being Gale Sondergaard. Just for the record, Spring was apparantly "not like the other girls". I love her also. If you want to see her in two different types of roles ; check out her, nosey,/ gossipy character in "When Ladies Meet", a role she originated on Broadway and her nasty housekeeper making Gene Tierney's life miserable in "Dragonwyck". She was very versatile. Thanks for watching,! Don't forget to subscribe, please push the "LIKE" button and stay SAFE. Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Now we're talkin'! Love her sinister bearing. While not playing "evil" as such, except here and there, the best of that group , I think, is the indomitable, superior, arched brow and quick to demean Florence Bates. "Rebecca", "The Brasher Dubloon" (where she gets to shove her husband out the window), Ingrid Bergman's coach in duplicity in "Saratoga Trunk". Fascinating back story, too. Be well. Admiringly, Daniel.
I saw Wizard of Oz as a re-issue in '49 (I was 8) and this was 1st picture I saw with adult Judy. Loved it. Then I saw Summer Stock and Judy was gone. I lived in small town and didn't have opportunity to see any earlier films from Judy. I had to wait until I got older to really discover the true scope of her magic. Cable and TCM were a godsend for me. Steve's reviews do the same for me.
Thank you so much! Yes, this one shows her as a woman and her final seduction by Van Johnson is so sexy. Both he and John Hodiak in "The Havey Girls" kissed her like a woman, gave her sex appeal and I loved that . Best; Steve
I really liked this one. My grandma on the Italian side of the family used to sing a bunch of old songs and one of them was 'I don't care.' When I watched this film for the first time I thought...'Hey that's one of grandma's songs!'. Love the time period covered with the old Barbershop Quartet scene and it was a nice romantic film as well.
Fabulous review. No one does these classic oldies better than this reviewer. No surprise we have a diehard JUDY GARLAND fan here. Van JOHNSON is one the better actors around. Love that guy. Did not know he was a queen

OK, Judy Garland is my favorite singer and Joan Crawford is my favorite actress, so obviously loving your great movie selections and insights. In fact Judy outed me to my parents when I was a 13 year old gay kid that became obsessed with Judy and Liza. I was watching a movie with my parents when the flamboyantly gay character on the show (Tommy Smothers) said he LOVED Judy Garland. My parents both paused to look at me. Busted. All good, and a proud Judy fan to this day! I don’t care…I don’t care, what they may think of me! My unusual Judy story came in 2017. My partner and I travelled to LA, and stopped at Hollywood Forever cemetery. We went to the mausoleum where Rudolph Valentino, Peter Lorre, and Larry from “Bewitched” were resting, but we couldn’t get in. There was apparently a secret, yet high profile memorial happening. In fact, I spotted the hot, gay owner of the cemetery next to his hearse waiting for someone to arrive. His name is Tyler Cassity, and his documentary “The Young and the Dead” is what sparked the “Six Feet Under” series. It wasn’t until a day later that the news hit…..Judy was being moved from New York to Hollywood Forever. She was flown to California 2 days before, so I’m sure I just missed Judy’s reburial. I wish I had hung around longer. Did I miss Liza? Did I miss Lorna? Did I miss Joey? The timing was very odd.
Your story reminds me of an except from a book about when people realized they were gay and one man said he walked into the livingroom when he was 8year old, heard on the news that Judy Garland had died and fainted. LOL! So dear! As for the Judy services...Well, you were there in spirit. I love "Hollywood Forever" and visit Ty Power and Clfton & Maibelle Webb whenever I'm in LA. Now I can vsisit Judy too! How marvelous! Happy Holidays! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Love your stories! I always forget that was Buster Keaton, and now that I know the story behind his appearance in the movie, it is more special. And doesn't little Liza Minnelli make her first film appearance in the final scene? Also, I gotta get me a TOQ t-shirt!!!

Thanks John. I have loved this movie since I saw it one afternoon when I was home from school and sick with something or other. This is the film where I fell in love with Judy and even at that age, thought Van coming onto her was really hot.

In the Good Old Summertime is the musical version of 1940’s “The Shop Around the Corner” that movie starred Jimmy Stewart & Margaret Sullavan both are some of my favorite movies 😊😊
Great review of this lovable movie. I haven't watched this in years, so thank you for inspiring me to take it down from the shelf and enjoying it once again. This is the perfect film for a Sunday night.
Another all time favorite of mine. It’s a simple but beautiful story, the sets and costumes are gorgeous… pure MGM style! And Judy, come on people, how can anyone not adore her? Not forgetting the early appearance of Liza at the end of the movie! I loved the recent remake with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan but, this one stays in my heart! Btw… where is the doll????
I know it's hard to believe, but I didn't have a period doll that I felt represented the musical or Judy, so I left one out. Sorry, but sceretly delihted that you noticed! Thanks for watching! Steve
Agreed we need some Olivia de Havilland themed posts. Also I would love you to do some commentary on a few of my classic favourites: The Prince and the Show Girl (Marilyn Monroe); The Yellow Rolls Royce; The Great Race; The Assassination Bureau. Admittedly three of these are from the 1960s but they are fantastic films with multiple movie performances of outstanding quality.
I love your reviews. They are the video equivalent of comfort food. I'd love to see reviews of: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn The Pride of the Yankees Little Women (1949) Thank you. And keep 'em comin'.

As a kid, Pride of the Yankees was one of my favorite films. I watched it every time it played on Channel 11 (NY). I fell in love with Teresa Wright. 😊
This movie is enhanced by the presence of Judy and Van and the music but it is a remake of earlier film that starred Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullivan called The Shop Around the Corner. If you enjoy this one do yourself a favor and watch the original. It is also the basis of the Broadway musical She Loves Me by the composers of Fiddler on the Roof. It was just presented last friday on PBS Great Performances .
I didn’t know that this is what “I don’t care” came from this film, well I didn’t know it existed... lol. Also didn’t know that it uses the “She Loves Me” cliche, so happy I found your channel!
i Just discovered you via TH-cam sidebar. I watch other movie blogs but yours really stand out. You are really funny but never at the expense of the films, of which you are very knowledgeable. Unlike many you're not overly long and I wish many were longer (the early ones were very short - I'm watching a bunch of them lately). I hope sometime you do "Laura" and "Johnny Guitar".

The early reviews were usually under 3 minutes and you've got so much more of interest to say than that.
@@John_Fugazzi Hooray! Thnks so much, John! I'm so glad you're enjoying them. In the early days we were doing one a week and that proved too much. watched this again and so many tidbits of info I never knew...amazing and wonderful all at once!! 😄 p.s. these smiling icons look like Halloween Pumpkins lol
Ah indeed so charming. Love this movie. Van is so sexy cute too. Most people forget Liza Minelli is the baby at the end of the story. Glad you brought up about Van's tragic car accident.. Liza mentioned (I"m good friends with Billy Stritch. her pianist/arranger) that Van was in terrible pain even after healing. He would get headaches and had neck tension. That is fab Steve you met Van.. I always wanted to meet him. And I so agree.. Van brought a bit of sex to the on screen romance ... Judy and Van got on great. I didn't feel the same chemistry with Fred in Easter Parade for example... though it is also one of my favorites.
No, I feel that she respects Fred, but he doesn't wanna take her to bed. Van , on the other hand, is quite another story and the way he comes onto Judy in that last scene, Baby Liza was most likely conceived right then and there in the shop under the Christmas tree.LOL! Thanks for watching.
SO WONDERFUL THIS IS WE ALL SAY, now u've done judy's in this delightful way any chance u can do something more on her like reviews on the "a star is born" trio ? ^^

Steve you look fabulous !!! And what a name dropper you are lol. It made me green with envy. You can see the chemistry and comfort Van and Judy had on screen. That's a crazy story about Van marrying Evie. At least he had the good sense not to marry again. Gay actors had little choice when it came to what the public expected and what the studios made sure was delivered. Spring Byington I remember in December Bride and thought her adorable. I must watch this again it's been so long since I've seen it. Thanks Steve for the great review.:o)
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Hey Sweetie... we're the same age and I wish I looked as good. Men do age better... and to quote Allan Sherman... you rat finks lol :o)
I LOVE this movie!!!! To me, its right up there with the greats; such as The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Random Harvest, The Prince and the Showgirl, just to name a few.
I'm so glad! I love this one. Judy is so beguiling and Van Johnson really sexes her up. He comes on to her in that final scene so seductively. I love when her leading man really kiss her and treat her like a desirable woman. Like Van, John Hodiak treated her the same way in "The Harvey Girls". Great kissers! Thanks for watching and have a SAFE New Year! Best; Steve
Good Old Summertime is a good entertaining film. Great art direction among other things good on this film. A friend of mine said Buster did not do a lot of pratfalls on this, I somewhat agree but if he did, he will overshadow the leads. Anyway, I think the Van Johnson character did a mind f**k (sorry for a lack of a better description) on Judy. I would not be pleased if I was her. Also, I named my Apple computer from the 80s Buster. Cheers!
No, My Friend, viewers like YOU are the lifesavers to us! Thank you so much for watching and for your lovely comments/compliments. Here's to the New Year! Be well, stay SAFE, keep watching and Best Wishes: Steve , Johnny & The TOQ Team
I never believed the rumors that Van Johnson was "gay" , but ater listening to this ,, well I guess it's true ! Well so be it . He's gone now . And we all loved his MGM films . He was a top movie star in his prime . And as for Judy Garland , she was one in a million and need I say more ! This is not on the list as one of Judy's great films , but it was a very pleasant old fashioned MGM musical .
I think it is one of her great films. It's perfectly constructed to showcase both her musical abilities and her acting talent ...and visa versa... and as I said, it's one of the few where the leading man, in this case Van, nuzzeled and kissd her with passion and sex appeal. The other is with John Hodiak in " "The Harvey Girls".
Hey, TOQ.....loved ur review and concur 100%....great but not as GREAT as Meet Me In St. Louis. I’ve seen it soooooo many times. Piece of trivia... Our Alma Mater is That Good Old Baylor Line....referring to line of alums down the years....we used to laugh as the tune seems perfectly set to the tune of In The Good Old Summer Time...download it and listen....good for a laugh as it will sound just like the good old summer time....
I love your reviews! You should do a new one each week! Please do Honolulu with George Burns & Gracie Allen- it's a hoot! Also Down to Earth with Rita Hayworth. Just on a side note, Britney Spears sang I Don't Care on Star Search & went on to round 2 😀 Keep up the great work Steve! Hi to you too Johnny 😉
Second-- Van Johnson was a little devil. I waited on him once in my early 20's. He goosed me with a wine bottle and then just smiled like a cat. Then I was shocked. Now at 61 I'm flattered. 😏
Why thank you, Renzo. You make me blush...not easy at my age...I'm fine. I hope you are too. Please take care of yourself and stay SAFE. I always look forward to hearing from you. Best; Steve
Someone lucky enough to see both Robert Preston in The Music Man and Van Johnson in the London production of same confessed to liking Van Johnson BETTER in that role.
Steve, no mention of the violinist Marcia Van Dyke? Her performance of the once popular recital piece Souvenir of Moscow by Wieniawski has become one of my favorite musical pieces in any film. Marcia was the first woman to be first violinist with the San Francisco Symphony. I give Joe Pasternak credit for having a true musician in the part. Van Dyke synced to her own playing. Judy singing I Don’t Care (a la vaudeville) and Marcia’s violin solo are the high points of ITGOS. For me.
With the exception of Judy's numbers I like "The Shop Around the Corner" better. Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan really seemed to hate each other, so it made it more satisfying when they finally got together at the end. The barbs are more bitter, Frank Morgan's storyline is sadder and the young delivery guy is hilarious.
Another fun review of one of my favorites. Are you rebranding? Follow your head and heart on that but just for the record, TOQATM is hysterical and lovely. I'd happily watch you do nothing but cut up for the camera, with or without a movie.

Cheers!
Thanks, Robert. I did do "The Haunting", check with my past episodes on "TH-cam" and you'll find it. Love that film. Thank you for the suggestions. t will take them under consideration. "The Uninvited" and "Rosemary's Baby" are on my 'to do" list. Thanks for watching and stay SAFE. Best; Steve
Steve Hayes one more vote for THE UNINVITED!
I LOVE your channel! I love old movies, of course, but your knowledge of the films and background details & gossip AND your wonderful humour, is absolute GOLD! Thank YOU and Johnny! Keep up the FAAAAABULOUS work. You’re a tonic! 😎👍👍

Steve, Johnny, God Bless You and keep you safe and healthy! I love you both as much as I can from here in Indiana on the Internet. I was saddened to learn of Olivia de Haviland's passing but looking forward to your revisiting her wonderful career.
Dearest Bob; Thank you for your kind words. We are both doing our best and hope you are also. Yes, Olivia was a great actress and a terrific, tenacious woman. I have several of her films on my "to do" list. Plsae be well and stay SAFE. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
That's perfect! LOL! I'll keep that in mind.
So beautiful small garden. Lovely
Lovely film.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ not sir, at beginning ...very beautiful flowers. 🏝😊
I have as much fun watching Steve's recommendations as I do watching Steve review them. Thank you for continuing to keep Hollywood's Golden Age alive.
What a treat!
So are YOU, Fella! Hope all is well and SAFE!
Steve Hayes is a spark of light and fun and charisma that we all need right now. And John gets more handsome in every video. I really like this movie and I'm so glad to see it here. Thanks for pulling this one out. I loved the video. Please take care and stay safe.
You too, John. Please stay SAFE and thanks so mcuh for your comments and for watching. Syay SAFE!
@@danielstanwyck2812 LOve that Flo Bates! "get ame chocolate, QUICK!" have a great day!
Love the time period covered with the old Barbershop Quartet scene and it was a nice romantic film as well.
i think so too. It's just wonderful.
Fabulous review. No one does these classic oldies better than this reviewer. No surprise we have a diehard JUDY GARLAND fan here. Van JOHNSON is one the better actors around. Love that guy. Did not know he was a queen
Yup. I loved the way he 'came onto Judy" in the end. Very sexy! Steve
Love your Sakall impression...we may have to start calling you "Cuddles"!
You can call me " Cuddles" anytime, Fella! LOL!

Best; Steve

Thanks John. I have loved this movie since I saw it one afternoon when I was home from school and sick with something or other. This is the film where I fell in love with Judy and even at that age, thought Van coming onto her was really hot.

Not really a Garland Fav but she sounds BRILLIANT AS ALWAYS!
@@dritz3806 Mine was always "Shadow Of A Doubt". Incredibly subtle and nuanced performances by both her and Joseph Cotton. Hitchcock does it right!
This movie is enhanced by the presence of Judy and Van and the music but it is a remake of earlier film that starred Jimmy Stewart and Margaret
Sullivan called The Shop Around the Corner.

I love this one and think her chemestry with Van is great. So sexy! Steve

Lovely review
Thanks, Buddy! Hope you are okay and staying SAFE!

Cheers!

Second-- Van Johnson was a little devil. I waited on him once in my early 20's. He goosed me with a wine bottle and then just smiled like a cat. Then I was shocked. Now at 61 I'm flattered. 😏
This made me lol! Thank. You for sharing that!

Someone lucky enough to see both Robert Preston in The Music Man and Van Johnson in the London production of same confessed to liking Van Johnson BETTER in that role.
Wow. Interesting. He was certainly versatile.
For me.
She was lovely.
THEY WERE THE BEST OF THE BEST
With the exception of Judy's numbers I like "The Shop Around the Corner" better. Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan really seemed to hate each other, so it made it more satisfying when they finally got together at the end. The barbs are more bitter, Frank Morgan's storyline is sadder and the young delivery guy is hilarious.
Whoa whoa whoa. It's no longer TOQ ATM? Aw man!
Another fun review of one of my favorites. Are you rebranding? Follow your head and heart on that but just for the record, TOQATM is hysterical and lovely. I'd happily watch you do nothing but cut up for the camera, with or without a movie.
