Ethel thought the show needed one more great song in the later half. Berlin stayed up all night creating the cross-singing classic 'You're In Love'. The first time they played it for her at the piano Merman said "My God, they won't let us off the stage!" And sure enough when they premiered the song in Philadelphia it got SEVEN ENCORES.
And no wonder! Berlin used the same type of song when they revived 'Anni Get you Gun" a few years later and once again, it stopped the show. Thanks for watching and have a lovely Thanksgiving. Best; Steve
In her last years, Ethel enters a New York elevator with her assistant, where there were already two elderly women. Behind Ethel's back, the one woman whispers to the other, "doesn't she look like a young Ethel Merman?" As the elevator doors open, Ethel slowly turns around and glares at the one woman. As they step off the elevator, Ethel says to her assistant, "I'd hate to think what an OLD Ethel Merman must look like!" 😁
I somehow never realized that Merman's role in *Call Me Madam* is the only one for which she was awarded a Tony. Given that fact, maybe it's right that *Call Me Madam* is the one she got to immortalize on film.
There is absolutely no mistaking Ethel Merman for anyone else. Unique isn’t strong enough a word. Great review as always. Happy thanksgiving, guys and thanks.
Growing up in the 1950-'60s I was in the marching band by the time I was in the sixth grade. (Small east Texas school.) On the bus to football games the band would sing popular songs. One of my favorite memories is singing "You're Not Sick, You're Just in Love." The girls sang the Merman part while we boys sang the antiphonal line. It was great fun. Interestingly, even in rural east Texas, we were all familiar with the music from current Broadway productions. Great review...wonderful memories.
Funny side note: The Ethel Merman cameo in "Airplane" is named Lt. Hurwitz by the writer/director Zucker brothers in honor of their Milwaukee buddy Ken Hurwitz who was a broadway musical fanboy. His son Justin Hurwitz won an Oscar at a maddeningly young age for the score to "Lala Land".
I had the good fortune to see La Merman at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles when I was fresh out of high school. Our 11th row seats were a whole 30 dollars each. It was probably intentional but her mic went out during "Life is Just A Bowl Of Cherries" and without skipping a beat, she opened up the lungs and projected over the orchestra. I think they could hear her all the way to the Mark Taper Forum when she held the note on "I Got Rhythm". 16 bars and no mic in her 70's. Amazing performer.
She was a force! Berlin used to say, "Don't ever write a bad lyric for Ehel, they'll hear it in New Jersey!" LOL! Have a great Thanksgiving! Best; Steve

Steve, if they ever make a musical based upon the life of Ethel, I want you to star!!! The dance number between Donald and Vera is the most exquisite of any I've ever seen on film. She seems to always dance ballet but they really combined styles beautifully. Also, the clip with Ethel, Judy, & Babs makes Babs look VERY insecure next to fog-horn Ethel.

@@stevenhayes4063 The Merm gave him a couple of punches for sure Steve, with one shot below the belt. 😉 Me Irish grandmother would have called her “a corker”. 😁 Thanks for the reminder of this fabulous film!
Definitely one of my favourite musicals. Ethel looks amazing and her duet with Donald O’Connor is impossible to not sing along to! Oh! And your impression had me rolling! 🌺🌺🇨🇦
"You're Just in Love" is such an upbeat-yet-lovely moment. So glad Merman got at least one chance to cut loose onscreen re-creating one of her top Broadway roles, with everyone else A-1 as well, as Steve mentioned.
Steve, always impressed at your ability to do spot on imitations of the stars, getting their vocal characteristics and mannerisms down pat! Ethel Merman, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Ronald Colman, Rosalind Russell, and on and on. You really are quite good at it. That said, another Great review!
I wasn't going to watch this one because I had never heard of it, but said 'why not'. You had so much fun with this- I want to see the movie now! Thanks.
Thank you, Steve, for another wonderful review of this important film. I always enjoyed Ethel Merman with her singing and her acting. I still remember the time Ethel appeared on "The Muppet Show" in the 70s. Kermit-the-Frog said to her, "they could use you as an air raid siren." Of course, Ethel played it coy and laughed about it, but all of sudden, she knocked Kermit to the ground. I wonder if you ever saw Elaine Stritch's one-woman show called "At Liberty"? If you haven't, it is available on DVD, and it's also available on TH-cam for free. Elaine was Ethel's understudy for "Call me Madam" on Broadway, and Elaine went out for an audition for the musical "Pal Joey." She got the role as the reporter, but they would have to do out-of-town try-outs in Connecticut. As a result, she asked her manager, the director, and Ethel would it be okay if she could do both shows? All of them agree, but she had to ask Ethel if she was still going on as the lead in "Call me Madam" before she went off to Connecticut. One time Elaine asked Ethel if she was planning to do the show that evening, and Ethel said to her, "go on and do the other f-----g show, Elaine." Elaine also mentioned what Ethel did when there was a drunken individual in the audience heckling her during the "Money" song. It was totally hilarious.
Yes, I rememebr "La Stritch" and that anecdote from her show. Ethel could be a tough cookie, but as long as you didn't step on her toes, she could also be a trooper. Thanks for watching! Happy Holidays: Steve
The back stories you share from time to time attached to your reviews are absolutely priceless. Your Ethel Merman story at Carnegie Hall had me rolling on the floor.
I'm adding another comment. I thought I'd tell you that I found and watched Call Me Madam last night. I forgot how wonderful that movie is. Thank you for reminding me. I can't get over George Sanders voice I had no idea that he could sing. He had a magnificent voice.
@@stevenhayes4063 I just had to see this tonight and found it streaming....what a fabulous musical. George Sanders could sing quite well and should have done more musicals. Donald O'Connor was very cute here. Vera Ellen was such a great dancer and Ethel Merman was legendary . Thanks for the recommendation. I love your channel.
Happy Thanksgiving, Steve! Your videos are always the highlight of my month! I recently watched the majestic technicolor epic ‘Duel in the Sun’ for the first time and loved it! Good girl Jennifer Jones wearing too much bronzer as she spasms back and forth from coquettish to sultry, and stormy Gregory Peck as a simmering bad boy, all towering and lusty! That operatic rifle shoot out finale, culminating in the lovers crawling anguished over dirt and gravel for a final passionate embrace, so over the top and sooo sexy! It’d be perfect for a Tired Old Queen review! 😉
"Duel In the Sun" is definitely on my "to do" list! I love it too! Also Jennifer Jones in "Love Letters" and "madame Bovary" and I adore her and Montogemery Clift in the little seen " Indescretaions of an American Wife". SO HOT! Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve

I was 10 when the movie came out and old enough to get dropped off with little brother at our one first-run movie house in my northern Idaho hometown of less than 5,000. I loved musicals and Berlin could get you on first exposure with his wonderful songs. I was crazy about Betty Grable, Mitzi Gaynor and others. Ethel wasn't in that mold, but I did love the movie. I actually enjoy it more now and truly appreciate the unique greatness of Merman. I'm so thankful Fox did this for Ethel. It's fun to remember and still fun to watch. Thanks.
What a lovely anecdote. I came from a small town myself and remember when parents could drop you off at the local movie thatre and you were perfectly safe. It is a wonderful movie and I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Happy Holidays! Steve

Well, once again you have me giggling in delight, both at your review (and your Merman!) and the prospect of watching Ethel in action for a Thanksgiving treat. I can't decide what's more amazing about your reviews -- how damn entertaining they are or the fact after I view one it's impossible not to want to watch whatever film you've recommended tout suite! Hysterical post!I was lucky enough to see her at the London Palladium in 1974 and although she was "getting on" the years just dropped away when she started singing her famous numbers.
I loved this review! Steve, you make me laugh out loud. You ARE “The Merm” when you imitate her singing style. Thanks for this and all your great reviews 👍🏻🙂
Steve---What can I say except that how I wish a dear friend of mine, Jay, were still around to hear you do The Merm. Jay passed away last year at 91. His stories were legendary, ranging from being picked up as a hitch-hiker by Dore Schary to his adoration of Ethel Merman, whom he served on occasion at Howard Johnson's in New York. So, when he died last year, we announced a wake for a guy named Jay, but also known as Ethel. I am sure, however, that both Ethel and Jay are taking occasional breaks from duets up above to giggle at the Tired Old Queen at the Movies...
OMG! Thank you from the bottom of my heart and God Bless Jay! So glad you liked the episode and thank you for taking the time to write such a lovely tribute to your friend and the compliments to myself and the TOQ team. Many Thanks & Happy Summer! Steve

I somehow missed this but will catch it soon. You always come up with good ones! What a Who's Who of names behind the scenes, from Lindsay and Crouse to Leon Shamroy and Irene Sharaff. George Sanders singing is as big a surprise as Clifton Webb singing. I wouldn't have guessed either except for rare clips on TH-cam. Happy Thanksgiving.
I don't think Steve even mentioned Billy De Wolfe, who does outstanding work in *Call Me Madam* as Ethel's bitchy chargé de affaires, Pemberton Maxwell. De Wolfe is probably best remembered today as the voice of Professor Hinkle, the evil magician who keeps trying to steal back Frosty's hat in the Rankin-Bass animated Christmas special, *Frosty the Snowman* (1969).
Steve, they sure don’t make voices like The Merm’s any more, or feet like Donald O’Connor’s. BTW love, love your “Ethel”😆😆😆😆 Another great review! Happy Thanksgiving, you guys❤️
Fun review! I remember she used to be on the Merv Griffin show once in a while. I still recall they sang the duet “You’re In Love” one time and I thought wow Merv! Keeping up with Ethel Merman!
I'll try and find that! I liked Merv. He loved the old stars and had alot of them on his shows and always showed them defference. happy Holidays! Steve

Steve! How fantastic to see you and Johnny again - I've missed you guys And talking about one of my all time favorite, somewhat obscure film musicals I actually saw Ethel Merman in a tour of call me madam when I was a child and I never forgot it - she was incredible! So glad you said Donald O'Connor was sexy - I always had such a crush on him - and in those awesome red frame glasses - sigh... But I can't believe you didn't mention his balloon number - What Chance Have I With Love? It has always been neck and neck with Make 'em Laugh my favorite O'Connor number - just spectacular! On this Thanksgiving holiday I am thankful for you, and Johnny - two of my favorite you tube stars Happy Holidays with much love! Jon
Dear Jon; Thanks so much! I adore O'Connor! He was DEFINITELY sexy!! I'd rate ghim a ten! As for the "what Chance Have I With Love" number, sorry, I guess it was so much like "make "em Laugh", that it slipped my mind. As he said, he could do those acrobatic type numbers blindfolded, from his vaudeville days, but was most thrilled dancing with Vera. Have a wonderful holiday and thank you so much for watching! Steve and everyone, look up Dame Eva Turner. She was a diminutive English opera singer with a huge voice. An operatic Ethel Merman. When they recorded her on 78s with other singers, they had to put her in the corridor! Her Turandot is amazing. Merman just as wonderful in her own right. I've just ordered the DVD.

What a belt! Thanks for watching! Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 The Merm gave him a couple of punches for sure Steve, with one shot below the belt. 😉
Me Irish grandmother would have called her “a corker”. 😁
Thanks for the reminder of this fabulous film!
Definitely one of my favourite musicals. Ethel looks amazing and her duet with Donald O’Connor is impossible to not sing along to! Oh! And your impression had me rolling! 🌺🌺🇨🇦
I love this one too. I hum all the songs all the time. A "get happy' movie and who doesn't need one? happy Holidays! Steve
That said...marry me!...sorry... carried away... Thanks you so much! You made my day! Happy Holidays and thanks for watching TOQ! Best; Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Thanks Steve, have a Great Holiday! :-)
I just love your spirit and energy and love of movies. Thank you you made my day. I watched this as a child and just loved Donald O'Connor
Well, you made mine, so right back at ya! Happy Holidays! Steve
OMG you are back. I so look forward to your reviews. You have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
You too, paul! Thanks so much for watching! Best; Steve
Omg i love this movie so much and people rarely talk about it. Thank you, this was wonderful.
I'm so glad yu iked it! I lve this movie. Have wonderful holidays and thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Finally someone agrees with me that Donald OConnor is ADORABLE!
He could park his tap shoes under my bed any day of the week!
I also think Donald O'Connor is adorable & underrated. He held his own with Gene Kelly in Singing in the Rain. Make ' em laugh is brilliant!
What a treat!💕🇬🇧
It's our pleasure! Happy Holidays! Steve
Another day RESCUED by Steve Hayes!! Thank you and have a a holiday season as WONDERFUL AS YOU!!
Nicomedes, you cutie! You made my day! Thank you for the compliment and for watching! Have wonderful holidays! Best , Steve
I wasn't going to watch this one because I had never heard of it, but said 'why not'. You had so much fun with this- I want to see the movie now! Thanks.
Hooray! Mission accomplished! I think you'll have a wonderful time! Happy Holidays! Steve
Another great Donald O'Connor number in *Call Me Madam* is his solo song and dance, "What Chance Have I with Love?"
They always created the perfect numbers to match his particular skills. He was simply terrific.
I ❤ your Merman impression!! Have a great Thanksgiving!! 🦃🦃🦃
You too and thanks so much for watching! Best; Steve
Thanks so much! I hope you have wonderful holidays and keep watching TOQ! Best; Steve
Hilarious, thanks for the laughs guys!
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
What a glorious career YOU have enjoyed - thanks so very much for sharing these delightful memories with us. 🥳

Happy thanksgiving Steve and Johnny! Steve your “Ethel Merrman” was amazing! Love you! X
LOL! Thanks so much! I so appreciate it! Have a great Thanksgiving and please keep watching TOQ at the Movies! Steve
I'm adding another comment. I thought I'd tell you that I found and watched Call Me Madam last night. I forgot how wonderful that movie is. Thank you for reminding me. I can't get over George Sanders voice I had no idea that he could sing. He had a magnificent voice.
Yes! It's a lovely surprise in a marvelous movie...and visa versa! So glad you watched it again! Happy Holidays! Steve
OMG your Disco Merman impersonation was brilliant....
I listened to it throughout the '70's...don't ask. LOl!
Best; Steve
Steve, I've loved you since "Trick" doing the pinga piano bar number! Love your Merman imitation and Call Me Madam is my favorite Merman album to listen to, I didn't even know there was a movie! So good...now I have to watch it, come to Palm Springs and we'll watch it together.
Better watch out, I may take you up on that one day! LOL! Thanks for the compliment, I love "TRICK", as well. I hope you continue to watch TOQ and that you have lovely Palm Springs holidays! Best; Steve
Steve is a cast of thousands in one performer. Bravo, kiddo!
Thanks a million!
Wow your impression of Ethel singing is almost more Ethel than Ethel herself. Great review of a classic film . God bless all these wonderful actors and here is to Ethel Merman the greatest and shiniest star of Broadway!
WOW! Thank you for the compliment...don't let Ehel hear you say that, she'll haunt me! LOL! Have a lovely holiday ! Best Wishes; Steve

Well, thank you! From your mouth to God's ear!... as they say. I so appreciate your comments/compliments and thank you for watching TOQ! Happy New Year and please stay safe! Best Wishes; Steve
Oh, Donald O'Conner was so pert and cute, and yes, even sexy. I understood why Marilyn fell for him in There's No Business Like Show Business. Call Me Madam is one of my favorites.
Mine too! Love 'em both! Thanks for watching! Steve
What a beautiful tribute to Ethel Merman! I'm renting and watching this for sure, Thanks Steve
Oh, you'll love it! The one time where they really "got" her on film! Such fun! And Donald O'Connor is sublime. Have a ball! Thanks for watching! Steve
Dear Steven &jhonny, your programs are sheer delight, thank you for the laughter and pleasure. Could you do a program on “my man Godfrey” and “sullivan’s travels”.
They're on my "to Do" list. Thanks for watching! Steve
Steve
@@stevenhayes4063 Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could magically gather in person as fans of old films and great entertainers and share our great memories? It would be a fun time. Thanks again Steve and Happy Holidays to you too.
Steve, I have to agree with you, about Donald O' Connor, not only was he so talented, but he was very cute and had a great tush! 😘
Yes indeedy! Thanks for watching!
Great commentary (and great Merman imitation too!). She was NOT subtle, but I'm glad this performance was captured on film. Wonderful supporting cast too. Love your sense of humor (Tired Old Queen at the Movies!!! LOL!!)
Thanks so much! As for the TOQ title...Well, I figure ya gotta' call 'em like ya see 'em. LOL!
I only only conclude it's a delectable combination of both. Bravo, and thanks for making my day -- and week! Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh , Scott, you made my day! Thank you so very much for the compliment! The fact that the reviews lead you to the movies is exactly why TOQ was created! It makes me so happy! Have lovely holidays as well. All My Very best; Steve
Thanks so much for posting, Steve. A new review from you is like getting a great present for Christmas! Incidentally, I introduced my Hispanic boyfriend to “Trick” this past weekend, and he almost died laughing when you sang, “Como te gusta mi pinga?”!!!
Hooray! Mission accomplished! Tell him I send him a big kiss for that! Whenever I mention it to my Spanish friends. they always burst out laughing! I'm very proud to be associated with that song! Thanks so much for watching and my very Best Wishes; Steve
Hysterical post!I was lucky enough to see her at the London Palladium in 1974 and although she was "getting on" the years just dropped away when she started singing her famous numbers.
Yup! Nobody was more Merman than Merman! A treasure! Happy Holidays! Steve
Steve and Johnny wishing you both a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving. Great video as always.
Thanks so much! Happy Holidays from Me, Johnny and the TOQ Team!
I loved this review! Steve, you make me laugh out loud. You ARE “The Merm” when you imitate her singing style. Thanks for this and all your great reviews 👍🏻🙂
You're SO welcome and thank you for the lovely compliment and for watching! Happy Halloween! Steve
Steve
Aww, Steve, you leave us wanting more and then you don’t give it to us ! It’s SO special when we do hear from you and you are looking and sounding fabulous… I feel all Christmassy when you’re around 🌟🎄✨💫. Yes, Ethel was so loud and ‘ large ‘ that sometimes I forget that she had a beautiful slim figure… gorgeous legs and arms. Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your loved ones ❣️
Yes, underneath all the bravado, Ethel was quite the looker! Thanks for the Christmas compliment! Makes my day! Happy Holidays! Steve
Great review,Ethel merman goes disco was hilarious.I’m surprised you thought Donald O’Connor was sexy, keep well Steve,Johnny and company ❤️
Oh, definitely! VERY sexy. I always went for short/small built guys, with big hearts, alot of energy and a great sense of humor, the latter being the most important. I'm a sucker for a man who makes me giggle. Take care, Buddy! Always a treat to hear from you! Have lovely holidays! Best; Steve
Ethel was an American treasure!
Indeed! I wish more young people knew who she was now.
Thank you for presenting this lost treasure. I love this movie--such a beautiful, colorful treat and I love Vera Ellen. And, of course, Ethel!
I know! It's so much fun! Have a lovely holiday season! Best; Steve
I don't think I've seen this one in a long time.... gonna have to give it a look see...Thanks for the great review.

@@stevenhayes4063 Have you done "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers"? Based on some true Seattle history.
@@davidburgess3882 No, but Inplan to very soon. Thanks for watching!
Yes, Sanders equates himself very well in this and even looks like he and Merman would make a good couple. Thanks for watching! Steve
Billy De Wolfe absolutely love him❤️❤️ … great review Steve as usual… love your impersonation of Ethel Mermen… ❤️Donald O’Connor great as always,..
Thank you, Judy and thanks for watching TOQ! Much appreciated! Happy Holidays! Steve
Thank so much! Have a terrific holiday! Enjoy every minute! Best; Steve
Steve
Just watched the DVD and revisited your review. Are you sure you didn't provide the dubbing for Merman's songs? Very impressive. Amazing dance sequences too. Loved it.
I adore this musical. But then, I tend to love the ones that aren't as well known. Thanks for the Merm compliment, but don't let her hear you say so. LOL! Happy Holidays!
I saw this film on TH-cam and just the George Sanders imposing Princedom European accent is worthy of wacthing it. Great Video, as usual 😜and Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸

Great review. Dusted off my old dvd copy based on it. Lots of great songs. knew George spoke German didn’t know he did his own singing. Thanks! Enjoyed it all over again
Some great dance sequences make you wish it was in CinemaScope which by the way makes it a Great double feature with “There’s No business like show business”
It's alot of fun and both movies got the best that Fox had to offer! So great! Have lovely holidays! Best; Steve
Steve!
How fantastic to see you and Johnny again - I've missed you guys
And talking about one of my all time favorite, somewhat obscure film musicals
I actually saw Ethel Merman in a tour of call me madam when I was a child and I never forgot it - she was incredible!
On this Thanksgiving holiday I am thankful for you, and Johnny - two of my favorite you tube stars
Happy Holidays with much love!
Best; Steve
I saw this movie decades ago. Now, I want to see it again!
Worth another look. It holds up vry well and it's funny! Best; Steve

@@stevenhayes4063I watched it last night.....it was lovely,,, she had a nice body and legs.....I just remember her as older and bigger!
Hooray! Thanks for the tip o Turner
Ethel has so much presence.
She certainly was. Unique in every way! Enjoy! Steve
