Thanks, Steve. My brother and I used to howl while watching this one. And I agree, the great Geraldine Page does go too far in this one. She took a lot of license with it. I suppose you just have to believe that she was playing drunk and stoned all the time! Good review! And I always watch it whenever it's on. Met Shirley Knight once on 8th Street in the Village a few years back. She should have had a better career in film. Sweet lady in real life, very genuine and charming.

I got to see Sirley Knight do "Come Back, Little Sheba" off- Broadway back in the '80's and she was so good. I also recenty saw her and Aidan Quinn do Horton Foote's "Young Man From Atlanta"., a play that I wish I was fonder of, but they were both terrific given what they had to work with.

I love, love, love this film. (Tennessee didn't play when it came to writing his characters ... sometimes they had to tone it down, just a bit, for the movies.) Geraldine Page was nominated for an Oscar ... that was the same year Bette Davis was for "Baby Jane," and Anne Bancroft won for "The MIracle Worker." As I recall, there was a TV movie made of this about 30 years later, with Elizabeth Taylor as Alexanda, and, I believe, Mark Harmon as Chance. But I don't think you can ever beat the cast of this 1962 film. They're all impeccable. (Steve, I'm enjoying your videos SO MUCH!!!)

Tennessee Williams and Geraldine Page were made for each other. Nobody does southern decadence better than Page. Paul Newman was never more sensual and virile looking.

I'm with you on this one Steve. It is one of, if not my favorite, Tennessee Williams plays/movies also. Im a big fan of Madeline Sherwood who seemed to always be overlooked despite giving flawless performances. She was a great lady also. Read her bio on IMDb.
And the line delivered by Begely is "Now you take this lipstick and go downstairs to that ladies lounge and you write on the mirror Miss Lucy is available to any punk's got five dollars and can cut the mustard!"
I love Shirley Knight also and her performance in 1960's The Dark At The Top Of The Stairs (another movie I wish you'd discuss) is also cherished by me.
    Thanks for the review.

This is a fair review, though I look much more poorly on the movie just because I love the play, as flawed as it may be, so much. Richard Brooks (who you don't mention) obviously had to deal with censorship, but, much like with his adaptation of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, he also adds his own morality to the film, which is at odds with Williams. I can see why Williams hated the film so much--and yet we have so many great performances that make the film still work.

I agree completely. The movie is kind of trashy, but such good actors are fun to watch. Paul was charismatic and gorgeous with magnetic blue eyes. There's a screen test that Paul and James Dean did together. Paul did "somebody up there likes me" replacing Dean after his death. I wonder if he had lived, would they have been up for the same roles. Steve, love to see a real fan look at these older films. If there is a Movie Trivia Game played in homes with friends, I want to be on your team.

LOL! Well, it's the ONLY catagory I'm any good at, so you might want to re think that. I think paul Newman's career got an extra boost through Dean's demise. I'm not sure how Dean would have aged and wonder if we saw everything in three films that he was able to bring to the table. Newman grew with each picture and you can watch a steady maturity and nuance. . Dean, like Judy Garland, was a comet and again, I'm gad we have the three great films he made to show us why so many actors have been influenced by him since. Best; Steve

OOO my kinda movie - sleazy and trashy ala "Valley of the Dolls" This was really daring and racy for 1962. Wonder the censors at the time didn't water it so down to merely innuendos as they have been known to do. Gotta watch this for sure AND welcome back TOQATM. Don't stay away so long.

Tennessee Williams' material NEVER disappoints, even when is ideas become somewhat bowdlerized for the screen. My favorite one of his play/movie adaptations has to be "Period of Adjustment," with the screen version starring Jane Fonda, Anthony Franciosa, Jim Hutton and Lois Nettleton. Check it out! Also great is "Suddenly, Last Summer."

Gerry Page even balked at first at the play - she found it hard to imagine herself a 'beauty' even a washed up beauty and she really pulled it off.

Watered down and overproduced version done in wide screen!! Newman is somehow unconvincing. Warren Beatty would have been a better choice for Chance Wayne; see him in All Fall Down the same year. The supporting characters take over and Page is off screen for too long.

Tho Page was older, there are certain parallels to Marilyn Monroe, not least that it was the same year she started her last film and same year she died. Page would absolutely never appear this glamorous again, and the charcacter is very not Page. Perfect part for Monroe, tho many would have thought her too young for it.

Always enjoy your reviews, Steve, but a little bit of Tennessee Williams goes a long way with me. All this overblown, operatic, tragedian melodrama about a bunch of hopelessly screwed up, thoroughly unlikable narcissists with Southern accents. Admittedly, he created some bravura performances for a lot of talented actors, but after every TW play/film, I'm left asking why I should care about these silly people. Answer: I don't.

  • @richjenkins9253

Newman was making his transition from "star" to actor and definitely was at his best all around at this point. Page tended to come across as too "actress-y" in her films---"Trip to Bountiful" is unwatchable because her mannerisms augment the sentimentality of the material in a bad way. here, she seems well matched to Williams' stage-y dialog and the melodramatic tone of the story.
