I read "Me" by Katherine Hepburn and she addressed how people might have thought she was a homewrecker between Spencer and Louise Tracy and said that the Tracys' marriage was dead before she ever arrived. Ms. Hepburn also talked about being with Spencer Tracy at the time of his death and how she picked out what Spencer would wear in the casket. When Mrs. Tracy arrived she said something like she didn't like an item Katherine had selected. Katherine said, "Oh, Louise, what difference does it make?" For some reason that comment has been a big help to me in my own life: it's not being glib or uncaring or rude but about realizing that many things we could get worked up over really aren't that important. Maybe an embarrassing incident takes place. Really, "What difference does it make?"

Hi Steve- when I was a child in the Mass General in the 60s (many ops, alright now thanks!) Miss Hepburn caused great excitement when she dropped in (maybe from Old Saybrook) to see a member of her staff who was in hospital. I thought that was great.
I had a friend of mine who was her doctor and once, when his receptionist was on maternity leave, Kate came in for an appointment, saw the situtaion and took her place for the afternoon. Quite a gal. Steve
Dear Steve, If ever we needed wit, we need it now! I adore your Katharine Hepburn impressions, but what's so striking when you look at this film is how attractive she and Spencer Tracey are together. Clever, clever woman to keep the writers' identity secret so that they'd be paid fairly, and brave to even attempt to handle a married alcoholic, however much she loved him. Somebody said of Tracey that he was "a hard man to shave", but on screen with her he looks warm and human, however dominant. There's a bit in "Pat and Mike" too that makes me laugh so much, when she and not Tracey handles the thugs who attack them and she refers to "the little one" who just happens to be Charles Bronson! Thank you so much for talking about them. Please may I indulge in reminiscence, to say I wrote crime stories which went well and are in collections, and murdering someone cheered me up enormously between writing funny books, plus people at the Crime Writers Association were very friendly. But when I'd run from my husband, back in London all the men I knew were gay or married, and some of them were both. And all the straight married men had problems - if I tried to stop them drinking, I couldn't, if I sorted out some huge financial mess, they recreated it immediately, and none of their wives left them. I had no money for ages because everything I'd earned had gone into my marriage and the house I'd left, which was difficult because my husband told me he'd lost everything, gambling on the Stock Exchange. One day by chance I met him in London, accompanied by the girl friend who'd moved in immediately I moved out, and he shook his umbrella at me and demanded I hurry up the divorce: "I can't claim tax relief for you because I'm not giving you anything, and I can't claim for her because we're not married - do you realise I'll be in the Super Tax bracket next year?" He was such good material, if you didn't mind the nervous breakdown. So I worked very hard. Eventually I found a tiny flat North of Oxford Street, and years later when my mother needed help I moved back to the block where she lived, and where I live now. In the days of video tapes I built up a huge collection of old films (which I've always loved), plus videos of my own appearances on TV chat shows and as a TV reviewer, and later I got a machine that recorded and played dvds and also transferred videos to dvds. But when my back got broken I couldn't get rid of all the old video tapes, and somebody finally visited me recently to dispose of them for me, and threw away all the tapes of my TV career before I could stop her. They were the only videos I'd postponed transferring. Are you surprised that I rely on your reviews to cheer me up? Thanks for being such a wonder, and best wishes, Alida
Oh Alida; The trials and tribultaions that men put people through! Really! If I wasn't one myself, I'd barely talk to me! Yes, a thousand times agreed! This movie is, on the one hand, part of the movement of women's liberation: demonstrating that individual women can be as bright or brighter than individual men, that being a woman doesn't mean one can't work with high competence and with serious matter and have humor and wit. And it's so funny, and so witty and their chemistry is so magical to watch! But it's also part of the cultural movement of keeping women in their place, by presenting the message that a man, sheerly by reason of being masculine, is superior, even to a woman who is patently more intelligent and worldly than he is (and superior to any man who is not a "macho" man, no matter what his good qualities are-- indeed, why should we even ask what his good qualities are, since he is not the "right kind" of man?....😠Blagh! ) When you step back think of how they balance things, it's really funny in places: the script is really arguing that knowledge of baseball is as important and valuable a thing as international diplomacy meant to win or avoid wars! 😂 But this cultural movement enabled regular men to think they were as good or better than any woman, no matter what level of education or culture or competence she could obtain, merely because they could explain what a shortstop was. Indeed, the more cultivated and competent, the more she needed a master to bring her down a notch and keep her under control. It's funny, but also depressing because it not only encourages chauvinist and homophobic behavior but also anti-intellectualism. But because it is the charismatic, marvelous Spencer Tracey, even its worst quality is still miles better than other pop culture examples, like the Flintstones, where the man can literally be presented as gauche, unattractive, foolish and genuinely unpleasant to his partner, and he still "deserves" and can order around like a servant a wife who is attractive and intelligent. The periodic occasions where the male lead shows decent behavior and kindness are presented as "revealing his golden heart" rather than a brief reprieve from fairly miserable and even emotionally abusive behavior. And the women are generally presented as getting their way through manipulation and trickery-- horriblly unhealthyas well! What straight boy, growing up, wouldn't absorb some very problematic and entitled/defensive messages, about gender rolls, gender norms, the value of intellectual pursuits, etc? It is no wonder that we struggled for decades with so many horribly entitled straight white guys, Who didn't realize that they were Fred Flintstone and NOT Spencer Tracey 🤣🤣🤣
I have always thought that Agatha Christie's Miss Marple (who first appeared in 1927 I believe) is really one of the greatest feminists of 20th-century literature. She was most definitely smarter than most men, and clearly knew she had to contend with their sexism. Even the Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple films (which are not liked by everyone -- but I certainly do like them) do a very nice job of presenting the struggle of a very intelligent woman against men (mostly police officers) who believe they are superior simply because of their gender.
Very well said, Melissa. I started watching this movie somewhere in the middle...it looked interesting. I loved the strong character Hepburn was playing. As I watched, I came to see the real gist of the movie and shut it off.
@@plauditecives and age! She doesn't even have the benefit of being an attractive 23 year old! But she is brilliant and makes the most of it, turning her disadvantage to her advantage. Utterly agree with you!
Oh, c'mon, you guys! I think you blew it. I want a mug and T-shirt that reads: TIRED OLD QUEEN AT THE MOVIES -- because there's a little Tired Old Queen in all of us. In all of us! No matter who you be!
Thanks for the reminder! I want to do "The Unforgiven" w/ Audrey Hepburn, " The Rainmaker" w/ Katharine Hepburn and 'Sorry, Wrong Number ' w/ Stanwyck. Best wishes and stay SAFE! Steve
The great love story of Hepburn and Tracy was an invention by the studio, MGM. They guessed, probably correctly, that the two being adulterers was better to them being disclosed as gay or bisexual, so they invented a story for them. You can read it all in Scotty Bowers' "Full Service".
It's on my "To DO' list. I cbought a beautiful reproduction of the Italian poster for it in Rome. The art work is through the roof . Thanks fo watching! Best Wishes; Steve
Well, I'll put that John Ford western goodie on my :To Do: lit! Thanks! I can't do more than one a month due to logistics, but I appreciate that you'd like me to. Stay SAFE and Best Wishes! Steve
I’ve heard a lot of millennials movie buffs call this movie “misogynistic garbage” but I personally don’t see it. I think it’s a bit dated (the fact that Katherine Hepburn is pretty much villainized the entire second half) but I do think the ending is pretty good.
I just think it's amazing that a film of this period even discussed this topic of gender roles etc and the tensions caused. Most rom coms had a struggle at the beginning and the romance at the end of the movie, this film reverses it and has two people drawn to each other, then realising that they clash. For that alone this film stands out from those of the period. There's an uncomfortable truth to it. Also some of the acting is very natural, that scene in the bar looks almost like ad libbing, so wonderful.
Great selection and think this is one of their best collaborations(and one of my favorites). These two truly are a model of how opposites do indeed attract and still had that unrepressible chemistry up to the end with "Guess Who Is Coming For Dinner"! Steve, would love to hear your favorite/personal selection for the most romantic movie as Valentine's day is coming up. Love to see that as your next video. Let us move forward with a newfound hope!!! Stay safe and be well!
They are on my list. I'd like to do my favorte "Shanghi Expresss", but it's not politically correct. Thnaks for watching and have a lovely end of summer! Steve
Woman of the Year was one of those movies I fell in love with during my college years, along with The Philadelphia Story. Katharine Hepburn has always been a favorite of mine. And you’re right, this is probably the only movie in which she is seen as sexy. Since you can do impressions of both Davis and Hepburn, what do you think a teaming of these two would have looked like? Even more importantly, who would have gotten top billing?
I always heard that the reason why Hepburn and Tracy got along together so well is that they were both closeted bisexuals and didn't realize biesexuality was a thing until they met eachother and were like "What a minute! You're also into men and women?!"
BRAVO!!! STEVE HAYES!!! An original, like a Tzar Nicholas ll Fabergé Egg. "Well, well, well, So JOE MANKIEWICZ stole from himself that Airport Scene, and put Bette Davis and Gary MERRILL in their place in All About Eve in 1950." Don't you think so querido Esteban?
I dunno. A good idea is always worth repeating. I did my own version several times with several men, but that was my take on it. LOL! Happy SAE , New Year and thanks for watching! Best Wishes; Steve
I know this movie has outdated sexual politics, but i just love it. Too many wonderful scenes for me not to. Some of the acting is almost contemporary between Hepburn and Tracy. Almost ad libbed in rhe bar scene. Kate is my favourite classic Hollywood star, and imo looked her most glamorous in this film.
according to Scotty Bowers, Tracey's guilt and binge alcoholism came from repressed homosexuality and the relationship between Kate and Spence was a double beard... for an affair- it was publicized a lot!
Steve, I love love love your reviews but I can't understand what you're saying when you imitate Hepburn's first remark on meeting Spencer Tracy. Even slowing down playback... the lock-jaw is too much for my old ears.
Forgive me but I cannot stand KH!! I know, I know.... she's an award winner, etc, but I just could never warm to her. Ever! Oh well. Thanks, Steve & Johnny!!
Happy New Year, Steve! Another great review. Love your insights and humor. Can't tell you how many times I have gone back to watch some of your reviews. Please keep 'em coming! : )
For a lot of the movie she is the self centered chauvinist not asking just doing. So her chai Amish and overbearing person laity over shadowed his by far. He cooked twice for her so I think some of your assessment is off. He was the door mat. And how she uses that Greek orphan and ignores his needs is absolutely narcissistic. But I still like the movie.
That's a sound assessment! I like the wit and the supporting characters, which they always managed to have in all their pictures together, especially in "Adam's Rib" Thanks so much for watching and stay SAFE! Best; Steve.
Steve, your opening of the door at the beginning of every TOQATM video is as iconic as any of the great moments in movie history ❣️

Hellooooooo, Steve....mahvelous to see you once again. You are such a treasure.....the Hepburn-Tracy films were so spot on.....great chemistry that does not exist among actors today. Of course the fact they
were in love might have had something to do with that.
All is well in central Texas. I was able to get my first COVID vaccine shot ten days ago. Beginning of the end maybe....oh, that’s the title of a classic sci-fi film with Peter Graves. Can you say grasshoppers? Take care.

But it's also part of the cultural movement of keeping women in their place, by presenting the message that a man,
sheerly by reason of being masculine,
is superior, even to a woman who is patently more intelligent and worldly than he is (and superior to any man who is not a "macho" man, no matter what his good qualities are-- indeed, why should we even ask what his good qualities are, since he is not the "right kind" of man?....😠Blagh! )
When you step back think of how they balance things, it's really funny in places: the script is really arguing that knowledge of baseball is as important and valuable a thing as international diplomacy meant to win or avoid wars! 😂
But this cultural movement enabled regular men to think they were as good or better than any woman, no matter what level of education or culture or competence she could obtain, merely because they could explain what a shortstop was.
Indeed, the more cultivated and competent, the more she needed a master to bring her down a notch and keep her under control.
It's funny, but also depressing
because it not only encourages chauvinist and homophobic behavior but also anti-intellectualism.
But because it is the charismatic, marvelous Spencer Tracey,
even its worst quality is still miles better than other pop culture examples, like the Flintstones, where the man can literally be presented as gauche, unattractive, foolish and genuinely unpleasant to his partner, and he still "deserves" and can order around like a servant a wife who is attractive and intelligent.
It is no wonder that we struggled for decades with so many horribly entitled straight white guys,
Who didn't realize that they were Fred Flintstone and NOT Spencer Tracey 🤣🤣🤣

Thanks for the reminder! I want to do "The Unforgiven" w/ Audrey Hepburn, " The Rainmaker" w/ Katharine Hepburn and 'Sorry, Wrong Number ' w/ Stanwyck. Best wishes and stay SAFE! Steve
Excellent, looking forward to that, one the films that I always go back to since I was young, is All My Sons, great film, have you seen it?
Rainmaker is a killer performance for Burt Lancaster, equal to Elmer Gantry
Brute Force and Criss Cross at my favorites
Sorry Wrong Number, another of my favorites, waiting for Criterion to release it, own all the other DVD versions
The great love story of Hepburn and Tracy was an invention by the studio, MGM. They guessed, probably correctly, that the two being adulterers was better to them being disclosed as gay or bisexual, so they invented a story for them. You can read it all in Scotty Bowers' "Full Service".
How about Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, with Ingrid Bergman, Lana Turner, and Spencer Tracey?
It's on my "To DO' list. I cbought a beautiful reproduction of the Italian poster for it in Rome. The art work is through the roof . Thanks fo watching! Best Wishes; Steve

Don't feel guilty, I love it too! Another Minnelli gem! Steve
Review is fine. must be a good Movie, but it's not available on YT!
Nope? But they show it quite often on TCM, if you can get it. Best; Steve
I’ve heard a lot of millennials movie buffs call this movie “misogynistic garbage” but I personally don’t see it. I think it’s a bit dated (the fact that Katherine Hepburn is pretty much villainized the entire second half) but I do think the ending is pretty good.
I love the wit, sexy innuendos and the sophistication. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
It is so simple - I just adore you!
OMG! Thank you so much! Please stay SAFE and Happy New Year! Best Wishes; Steve
Well, it won't be this Valnetine's Day, but I'll keep in in my "to do" list! Thanks so much for watching, stay SAFE and All the Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ No worry, We all love you and your videos any time of the year!!! God speed!
20% actual Woman of the year, 80% everything else in my opinion.
How about Marlene Dietrich in Catherine the Great or in Der Bleu Amgel?
They are on my list. I'd like to do my favorte "Shanghi Expresss", but it's not politically correct. Thnaks for watching and have a lovely end of summer! Steve
Woman of the Year was one of those movies I fell in love with during my college years, along with The Philadelphia Story. Katharine Hepburn has always been a favorite of mine. And you’re right, this is probably the only movie in which she is seen as sexy.
Since you can do impressions of both Davis and Hepburn, what do you think a teaming of these two would have looked like? Even more importantly, who would have gotten top billing?
The other one was 'Summertime", where the combinatioin of Rossano Brassi and Venice worked their magic on her. She's radiant.
I always heard that the reason why Hepburn and Tracy got along together so well is that they were both closeted bisexuals and didn't realize biesexuality was a thing until they met eachother and were like "What a minute! You're also into men and women?!"
I've heard that too.
Wit that isn't cutting is wonderful!
BRAVO!!! STEVE HAYES!!!
An original, like a Tzar Nicholas ll Fabergé Egg.
"Well, well, well, So JOE MANKIEWICZ stole from himself that Airport Scene, and put Bette Davis and Gary MERRILL in their place in All About Eve in 1950."
Don't you think so querido Esteban?
She's very sexy in this and she's having a ball.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ She sure is. 😝
according to Scotty Bowers, Tracey's guilt and binge alcoholism came from repressed homosexuality and the relationship between Kate and Spence was a double beard... for an affair- it was publicized a lot!
Yup! Scotty told 'em like he saw 'em! Thanks for watching! best;Steve
Still like her best in holiday and Philadelphia story
I do too. Both with Cary Grant, my favorite of her co-stars.
Steve, I love love love your reviews but I can't understand what you're saying when you imitate Hepburn's first remark on meeting Spencer Tracy. Even slowing down playback... the lock-jaw is too much for my old ears.
OK, I figured it out, finally (consider adding closed-captions to your videos). "I'm rather tall for you, aren't I, Mr. Tracy?"
oops- 1942.
Forgive me but I cannot stand KH!! I know, I know.... she's an award winner, etc, but I just could never warm to her. Ever! Oh well.
Thanks, Steve & Johnny!!

@@STEVEHAYESTOQ I feel like a philistine for not liking her! lol C'est la vie!
