Oh, thanks, Rick! I don't have the answer to that or alot of other questions for that matter, but am ALWAYS grateful to you and the people who watch TOQ so often and comment so generously. Many.many thanks! Steve
The twin act special effects are done superbly. There is a moment when Bette Davis lights Bette Davis's cigarette that is STILL impressive today and back when the film came out audiences gasped aloud!
It was Oscar nominated for the effects and shoud have been. Ironically, Olivia DeHavilland did "The Dark Mirror" the same year, which also had great effects.
Steve Hayes is the only film critic/buff/ historian I read or watch who can give away some plot points (bur Never the endings!) and make any confirmed movie fanatic want to see the movie immediately! He brings so much to these priceless videos : his knowledge of Hollywood back stories, the movie stars' careers and behind the scenes dramas that went on while filming, technical information ranging from how the films were made and the original music scores that accompanied these films , many by composers of genius. Steve's sense of humor is infectious. Like your favorite snack, you can't just watch one! I've seen may of his videos many times over, and my appreciation of movies is enriched incalculably This review of "A Stolen life" with the "two Bettes" is priceless!
Dear Michael; I'll give you an hour to cut that out! OMG! I'm so thrilled! Thank you so much for your kind, generous and incredible compliments! I'm sendning them off to my entire TOQ team! You're words are so welcome and mean so much to all of us! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I'm so very happy that you enjoy our efforts. Here's to more classic films together! All My Best Always. Stay well, stay SAFE! Sinecerly; Steve
Oh for the days when actors actually acted, when they became the character they were hired to play. This is why people are so delighted watching these classics! Hollywood was at its height then. The quality in film was superlative, and everyone was professional. Thanks so much for being here for us to get the behind the scenes story of the Golden Era. It happened only once and will never happen again!
Oh Steve! You have no idea how you’ve made these years bearable for all of us going through quarantine. You’ve shored us up and taken us outside of ourselves. I mean every word. Every word. 😃♥️
Oh Billy! What a lovely compliment! You really made my day! Thank you from the bottom of my TOQ heart! Here's to a Hapy Spring! My Very best Wishes; Steve
One of the reasons I clicked on this video was to watch you do another of your Bette Davis impressions 😄 I guess Bette was disappointed about not snagging Glenn Ford, but Eleanor Powell was gorgeous. Too bad she was more often than not photographed in black and white.
Unfrotuaantely, the only color movie she made during her "glory days" was " The Private Lives Of Elizabeth and Essex", and she had to battle the make-up and Olivia deHavillaind at her most radiant. I love " A Stolen Life" and the way Glenn Ford kisses her at the very ened always makes me swoon a little.
This one is so romantic. It's one of those curl up on a Sunday afternoon in the early Spring,, with a hot cuppa' and indulge yourself films. I love the score too. Max Steiner always does it for me. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Thanks so much! He's the newset member of the TOQ family! His name is OSO and he belongs to Johnny... I'm not going to tell the dog that he has a fan... he'll want his own show. Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE. Best; Steve
BRAVO!!!LOL HAHAHA!! Steve you're hilarious! Favorite moment: "Wedding reception, Pat standing on 2nd floor level of the Mansion by the banister, tosses the wedding bouquet to Kate looking up from below, Kate steps to the side, bouquet of flowers lands on the floor". Such a BETTE DAVIS moment.
Such a great treat to see your video during this very hot and long summer!! I have never seen this Bette Davis movie and now with your exceptional review will move it up on my list of must-see movies. Thanks for always bringing much-needed warmth and comic relief in these very challenging times!! God Speed and cheers!!
The first Betty Davis movie I ever saw, was her other identical twin film, Dead Ringer! I watched it home alone at about age ten on cable, and was completely sucked in. I've never seen this one, I'm going to hunt it down now...thanks so much for featuring this! (And for treating us again to your fabulous Bette Davis impersonation😄)
Thanks Melissa! I love "Dead Ringer" too, but I prefer this one because being an incurable romantic , I love seeing Bette in love. For me, the romanticism of Hollywood during the war years has never been equalled and I buy it hook line and sinker. It didn't always work when I tried to apply it to my personal life, but it sure worked for me in the movies. LOL! Stay well, stay happy and be SAFE. Best; Steve
Oh, Steve, I love your little ‘ shows’ ! You present to us a dazzling multitude of terrific movies and actors and I must say that you are up there with the best of them whether it’s drama, comedy or musical ! You are one delightful, warm and gifted man ! 🎭 🎬 ❣️
Dear Christina , you made my day! What lovely compliments! Thank you so much and for watching TOQ at the movies! I hope you subscribe and look forward to hearing from you again! Stay Safe. Steve
I will give it another try. My favorite of Davis’ is “Mr. Skeffington” which I don’t think you’ve covered yet. I’ve read her book and a couple of bios on her including the joint one on Crawford. Both are available here on TY. They say this one was no different than any of her movies at her peak in that it Bette was impossible. This was after her falling out with Wilder and as much as she praised him I think Bette liked having a weak director she could manipulate. Some of the movies suffer because of this. The movie makes me a little sad because as you said this was right at the end of her Warner Brother days. Times were changing and “women’s pictures” weren’t the sure bet they were in 1943. Still I love these mid-40s movies. I even like “Deception” despite it just being so melodramatic. I saw her doing the lashes and clipping the speech in a movie the other day remembered your impressions. Hilarious. 🤣
I needed that Bette Davis impersonation. You always pick me up when I'm down, Steve. I love that this echoes the theme of another Bette fave, 'Dead Ringer.'
when you said that Charlie Ruggles looked like the guy on the monopoly board with his mustache, I lost it. I laughed so hard, I couldn't look at him with a straight face the rest of the clip. you are such a great classic film reviewer. I'm binge watching a many of your videos as I can.
How happy was I to see a New Review..... fantastic as always... love love love your Bette Davis impersonations......my mother gave me my love of the movies by teaching me who was who and like you I fell in love with the classic era.... Bette was my favourite too. Steve....
Ya gotta' love the people who saw them in the movies and pass the knowledge onto us. I'm so grateful they did. And that's why I love passing them on to everyone else. Here's to classic films! Long may they reign! Thanks so much for watching! Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE. Best; Steve
She is my favorite actress too could watch her in anything and this a great movie too. Not my favorite but right up there with them who doesn't love a Bette Davis film is not a lover of movies!!! She was always mesmerizing and could draw you in even if you are not a fan of hers
Gawd not only do I totally adore your insights & backstories, but when you relate your own personal history relative to a particular movie, it's positively the absolute BEST! Bette, has and will always be my favorite. True...this movie was quintessential Warners. "Did Bette Davis make you gay?" Pardon me while I pick myself up off the floor!!!!!! My sides hurt from laughing so much. Love you.
Thank you so much, jay. You are too kind. I'm so glad you like this film and Bette as much as I do....did Bette Davis make you gay?...Try Steve Reeves. LOL!
I love old movies and Bette, Joan, Norma and Roz are my favorites but after discovering this channel I realized I loved Steve better! Lol, one of these days I’ll get to meet him in person. Thank you Steve for bringing love and laughs to someone in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.
DEAR TODD! I HOPE WE MEET ONE DAY TOO! THANK YOU FOR THE LOVELY COMPLIMENT AND FOR WATCHING TOQ! I HOPE YOU SUBSCRIBE AND HAVE A WONDEFRUL DAY! BEST; STEVE
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Omg! Of course I’m subscribed! Lol, how could I not be, you’ve brought me more enjoyment than I’ve had in years! I can’t believe I’m just discovering you. I’ve had a few surgeries on my hips due to a bone disease and your laughter and saucy banter got me on my feet with pure entertainment and joy, thank you so very much. Best wishes to Johnny also!
You do a good Bette Davis! I have no idea why I like this movie so much, I've seen it countless times! So glad you showcased it...I like Johnny's t-shirt ...I'll buy one too!
Hooray!!!! I love it because it's so romantic. Down to the Max Steiner score and when Ford kisses her at the end, He REALLY kisses her. It's one of the few Bette films of this period where you could feel he wanted her. The sexual attraction is great. All the Best and Thanks for watching: Steve
I’m a huge Bette Davis fan, but I always found A Stolen Life boring, except for the supporting cast, especially Dane Clark, whom I thought had better chemistry with Bette than Glenn Ford. I love your channel, though! Can you possibly review Mr. Skeffington, Deception, Beyond the Forest or In This Our Life? I think those are 4 underrated Bette Davis movies. My personal favorite Bette Davis movie is The Little Foxes. Thanks for the information and entertainment! I love classic films.
A few of the ones you mentioned are on my "To Do" list. One of the great things about the films of this period was the hug output. here are so many to choose from. Steve
Love your reviews so much. I too love Bette Davis! Fell in love with her and more so Paul Henreid. I have all her biographies and tried to collect all her movies. Paul and Bette are the best. So many of her movies remind me of me. Especially Now Voyager. Paul is so charming and attentive, what’s not to love. Thanks for your reviews, they all make my day and you as well. Keep on keeping on. This from an old Boomer!😉 Love you Steve!!
I know, it's got everything! The special effects werre nominated for the Oscar and are still pretty impressive. Also, the fact that she creates two distinctively different characters. Love Bette!
As always, I was so looking forward to another episode, and, as always, it has made my day! Great back story on becoming a movie lover! It truly touched my heart! When I got the notification, I stopped in the middle of what I was doing, while exclaiming with glee to my significant other, "A new episode of TOQ!".
Yes, and "The Sisters", "Dark Victory","The Old Maid", "All This and Heaven Too", "Te bride Came C.O.D>", "The Letter," "All This and Heaven Too", "The Great Lie","Now, Voyager" (Oscar), "Watch On The Rhine", "The Corn Is Green " and "Beynd The Forestt". I wanted to see how many I could list before I had to look it up. I did pretty well. LOL!
I tip my hat Steve this looks like a fantastic film!! Intrigue, adventure, comedy, romance, heart break and a double dose of Bette Davis! and a double dose of Steve Hayes!!
Gosh, your surrogate mom sounds exactly like mine. She took exactly the same approach with films when I was about eleven years old and especially when it came to Bette Davis. A proper cinematic education! I so enjoy your posts; informative and entertaining.
I just saw mine this past weekend on a trip back home. She's 94 and I reminede her of introducing me to bette davis. She laughed and said; " Really? Well, I was right!" I adore both women!
I think I love you! Welcome aboard! So glad you joined the party and I'll be able to drop by with a classic goodie every month! Thank you so much! Best; Steve
…. I’ve watched and rewatched your Bette Davis impersonations ….. and they never get old… I go back into the movie with fresh insight each time .,, cos there always something you missed…. There’s been a few times thst your impersonations have pulled me out of many a dark period…. I absolutely love your reviews Steve and I eager,y anticipate your new review… your knowledge is so impressive and you put so much into them Thank you Steve for the many hours of pleasure your reviews bring… I hope they keep coming… ❤️
Oh Judy; you made my day! I'm thrilled that the reviews make you so happy! Mission accomplished! As to my Bette impersonation...I have a feeling she'll be standing at the Pearly Gates waiting for me with a shot gun! LOL! Thanks so much and have the lovliest of holidays. You're kind and generous compliments mean a great deal. Best Wishes; Steve
Marvelous treatment of A Stolen Life and that this movie was the start of your being a classic movie fan. Historic detail on Max Steiner interesting too, Thanks, Steve.... for an August treat!!!!
As always, you're comments warm my heart and touch me deeply. I adore this film. It's always been a personnal favorite and I've been saving it up. I hop e you are well, busy and above all SAFE. All my love; Steve
Steve! I haven't watched this video yet but I'm already floating on a comforting pink cloud of satisfaction. I need you tonight as I gaze listlessly out my dim and sooty window at the smokey California sunset, the fatigue of depression threatening to knock me into the arms of Morpheus before the clock strikes 7:30 pm. Thanks for giving me something to stay awake for.
Oh Cheruyl; my heart aches for what's happening with the fires as well as the Covid in California. We finally got our numbers down in New York, but it's taken such a toll. I find such solace in my classic films every night and watch and re-watch them for different things. You are going to LOVE "A Stolen Life". After the last shot, which always makes me weep a little in happiness, you'll feel like you've just had a great meal. Consider this one "Comfort Food" for the soul. Take care and stay SAFE. Best; Steve
Thanks Steve. I LOOOOOOVE MRS. BETTE TOO! When she's on the screen, I cannot take my eyes off of her. Liz Taylor also. But BETTE was/is both beautiful AND SCARY to me. 😮😍😍😍
That is EXACTLY what made her so fascinating. You never knew what she'd do next and there was always that explosive quality lying just underneath. There's a british documentary about Bette that takes it's title from a quote by Olivia de Havilland who describes her as " A Bascically, Benevolent Volcano" . It's on TH-cam and I thinks it's the best documentarry on her. She was still healthy and feisty. Thanks so much for watching! Stay SAFE!
Yes... You're ABSOLUTELY right ! And... I did not not know about this documentary... I will watch it immediately. I JUUUUST watched The Corn is Green movie last month. It was on the MOVIE channel here in Los Angeles and I'd never even heard of it. But I saw her name on the credit and that was it... I'M IN. 😂 Thanks again and have a wonderful weekend. YOU ARE LOVED & APPRECIATED MR. MOVIE MAN ! ❤️❤️❤️🎥
Thanks once again for bringing these classic films to our attention. I've not seen this one,so will definitely give it a go. Stay safe and keep posting you make my day , thanks
I so agree. One of my all time favorite Bette's and it should have gotten her another nomination. Everyone in it is perfectly cast. Irving Rapper was a much maligned and underrated director, especially by Bette.
Hey, Steve, your channel is wonderful! Your reviews are spot on! Your knowledge of old Hollywood is second to none! Greetings from a dedicated fan in Melbourne, Australia! 🙂🌸
Mr COX!!! How wonderful to hear from you! Many thanks for your kind words. I'm thrilled that TOQ is in Melbourne! I hope this finds you well, happy and above all, SAFE! Thank you so much for watching! Best; Steve
Another famous twin movie that Charlie Ruggles was in where he discovers the twin deception was "The Parent Trap". He's the Boston grandfather who figures out that Sharon is really Susan. Also, one of my favorite Clara Blandick roles is in the Gene Kelly/Lucille Ball film "DuBarry Was A Lady" where she plays the little old lady who tells the story about marrying for love, and the twist is when she says, "Next time I get get hitched, it's for dough."
Charlie Ruggles and Clara Blandick...they definitely don't make 'em like that anymore. The throw in Walter Brennan and it's one of the reasons this movie sails...so to speak. Thanks so much ! Best Wishes; Steve
I do too, Davis! I save alot of my personal favorites to do down the line. I'm so glad I did this now, due to the current situation, it's been a looooooong, hot, distraught summer. Nice to have a bit of Warners relief! Thanks for watching. Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE. Best; Steve
Great movie. Been a huge fan of Bette since I was a teen. Wish I could remember the first movie of hers that I saw. Whatever it was I was HOOKED! I have seen just about all her movies.
I loved your own backstory to this review. It’s amazing the influence some adults can have on young minds. Wonderful, cos we’ve all got to enjoy your knowledge too. Xxx
My mother brought me to classic movies. Thanks Mom. And againThanks Steve! Her dad believed that there were only two actors who were actually worth the money they were earning: Kathryn Hepburn and Charles Laughton. I was named in honor Kathryn but my mother changed it to "Kathy"🤤 named for the incredibly Dumpkof Female lead in Wuthering Heights. Thank you, Steve and Johnny for these wonderful reviews.🌈💖🌈 Tonight my movies will be selected in honor of Olivia D; "Captain Blood" followed by "The Adventures of Robin Hood" 😎 Stay Safe you two. THANK YOU! 🌹🌺🌻☘💖💖
YUP! The best! I had a few older women, my Aunt Marie, my friend Nancy, who opened the door for me as a child. Later, when I moved to New York and "came out" I also learned from listening to older gay men, who idolized the great stars . Their enthusiasm was contagious and I began actively seeking out all the films they raved about. Thanks for watching. Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ My first classic film was The Women. My mom and I watched it one Summer afternoon. 💖 I felt so grown up. A cast of characters brought to life by some of the best of the best and a script that was loaded with the wisest of cracks and catty cuts. " One more permanent and she won't have a hair left on her head." "Yeah, but she's got plenty on her arms, baby!"
There's just something about this movie- I think it may have been the first Bette Davis movie I ever saw on t.v. (unless it was "Dead Ringer") and it caught my full attention, seeing those two Bettes go at it. I've show "Stolen Life" on DVD to a couple ladies during the last few years, and they were pretty passionate about it ("I want to watch it again!" "Where do I get it?" "I did watch it again!" "Can I have it?"). I thought Bette was fun to watch and she clearly is having a ball, but I was surprised to see such a big reaction to it.
I think that has talot o do with the overall romanticsm of the films of the War years. It has a sweeping romantic feel from the story, to the production, and especially to that score. Max Steiner was as much a leading man to Bette Davis in this film, and all the films they did together as any male costarr she played opposite. Thanks for watching. Stay well, stay happy and pleaase stay SAFE. Best; Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Thanks for the response. Keep these coming, along with those impressions- Davis and Hitchcock are great, but I love your "Susan Hayward" (with the head nod, just like she did) the most.
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ Just finished a video tribute to Davis over at my channel, after mulling over the idea for many years. "A Stolen Life" is of course included among many Davis classics, but reviewing the films to gather clips, I was particuarly taken with Davis' amazing work in "Mr. Skeffington," and chose to write about it afterwards for my blog. Her performance therein is unlike anything else Davis ever did IMO, as she adopts a light but very deft touch to portray Fanny (including raising her voice an octave), and is incredibly likable as a result, as well as very moving when things get dramatic (you want to protect Fanny when trauma comes her way- she may be vain and selfish, but Davis also somehow conveys Fanny's sweet as can be despite her faults). Would love to see you cover this one at some point- Bette rocks it!
@@slc2466 I quite agree with you and suggest you stay tuned to TOQ in the coming months, you may be in for a plesant surprise very soon. I agree. I love that one too. In addition, Orry Kelly wardorbe should have won the Oscar hands down! Happy Soring!

As always you gave an amazingly in-depth analysis of both the drama on and off screen that lends so much to understanding the film and the filming process; I particularly liked the clever bit about recognising the societal impact of WWII changing tastes and movie-going habits. Which explains a lot as to why cinema changed in it`s narrative style to appeal to a new sensibility; I had never before pondered as to why suddenly women on screen became so submissive, and apparently stupid, to appeal to the vanity of men; that Bette Davis suddenly became almost invisible until All About Eve. Even then she didn`t do anything memorable for me because my mother would never have allowed us to watch What Ever Happened to Baby Jane; The Nanny; The Anniversary if they had appeared on late night scheduling? As a young boy it always seemed an effort reconciling the cinematic Bette Davis, a staple of Sunday afternoon Matinees, to the made for television Bette Davis that popped up in programming like The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (I was a bit older & not in bed when televised) & Family Reunion. Bette Davis blazes away like the Sun in both these series while the other actors, although doing a credible job, appear like distant stars in an inky blackness by comparison. Who else but Bette Davis could deliver the truly chilling denouement in Harvest Home when she produces those huge scissors with such understated gravitas and screen acting aplomb. Indeed, if Bette were a young woman alive today she would be the one banishing Sauron and declaring to Frodo: "...All shall love me and despair!"
Please review one of my absolute favorite oldies…….”A Letter from an Unknown Woman” with Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. A classic love story from circa 1939, I think. Please review it!
I agree. Clark had a rough and dangerous sexuality. He got lost in the shuffle and didn't do as many films or have as many good opportunities as he shoud have had. He usually got starring parts in "B" films ("Whiplash") at Warners and character parts in "A" films and war pictures ("Destination Tokyo", "Aaction In the North Atlantic"). he later did alot of TV. But at Warners in the '40's, Garfiled got the pick. Thanks for watching. , stya safe an all my best ; Steve
I remember him most for the film 'Embracing You'. Few people know of this beautiful, but largely forgotten, film but try to find it. He also had strong performances in the films 'Deep Valley' and 'Moonrise'.
love your reviews lol. i hope you can do lady in a cage, strait jacket, the witches, mommie dearest or whatever happened to baby jane? aka those campy and unintentionally hilarious movies or serious ones like letter from an unknown woman or ivy. any of these will do. more power to you! you are so damn entertaining lol.
LOL! Well, if that's the case and we're twins, I hope you have an easier time at the dentist and finding clothes that fit! Carol Burnett was a huge fan, had grown up with these films, did 'em all and most of 'em are pretty good. She was fortunate that they were still running the old movies regularly on TV at the time and people like my parents, who saw them originally, were still alive to recognize and appreciate the references. Inidentally, Carol's favorite movie star was one of mine as well, Linda Darnell. Have a wonderful Halloween and thanks again for watching! best; Steve

Steve, I thank you for all the great reviews that have given me so much pleasure over the years. I always learn new things from you! Here’s a request: Do a review of “Clash by Night.” Barbara Stanwyck and Marilyn Monroe. Fritz Lang directing. The film cries out for your special touch!
Well, don't tell Barbara. She's touchy. LOL! It's on my "to do" list along with "Cry Wolf", "Exceutive Suite", 'No Man Of Her Own" and "The File On Thelma Jordan"...alotta Stanys to choose from! Hooray! Thanks so much for watching!
This is my number one all-time favorite Bette Davis movie EVER!! I LOVE Charlie Ruggles in this too. He's always such a lovable character. I love how it turns into a be-careful-what-you-wish-for kind of story. Excellent flick!! A very similar story to the movie Dead Ringer, which was many years after this one. OOps!! You said that after I posted this. Sorry!
I love this one too, because, unlike " Dead Ringer", it's basically a love story and mosre romantic. I don't think Bette was ever kissed more passinately than in theat final clinch in the fog with Ford. He really lays one on her and you can see he loves & lusts after her. Bette rarely had a leading man who conevreyd that. It reminds me of the effect that Rosanno Brazzi has on Katherine Hepburn in " Summertime". He's so passionate with Kate, you can tell he really arouses her. In both cases, very hot!
Hooray! The Total Keys On The Moonbeam has posted; and it's a Bette Davis! One of my favorite ones (my very favorite is Now Voyager - - the first black and white film I saw on the big screen), but most of her movies from that era are favorites (Mr. Skeffington, The Little Foxes. The Man Who Came To Dinner; I could go on, but you know them all anyway.) And A Stolen Life let her be both the good girl AND the bad. What more can we ask? Such a shame the brothers Warner kept giving her such terrible scripts, knowing what a talent they had in her. I guess they knew she could make a bad script into at least an interesting movie. But really... Beyond The Forest?! What a dump, indeed. Thanks, Steve, please keep posting your wonderful reviews when you can. You're always a treat to watch!
I’m in the minority , but I think she is amazing in Beyond the Forest. Her bitterness and self hatred are palpable. Her boredom is brilliant. But sometimes movies are personal and there was a time I so felt like that.
@@goshmargo just what I mean about making a bad script into at least an interesting movie; like the tagline said, "Nobody's as good as Bette when she's bad!"
Jerry Rathgeb thanks, never could tap into that tag line, thought, and realize now, -assumed it was ‘shade’. So thanks. My personal 2 favs are Now Voyager-for her growth into a beautiful soul and All About Eve. Seemed so glamorous to an unhappy kid like me. Her finest performance, again for me, is The Little Foxes. What a riveting and controlled performance. Wyler and her! Wow, would have loved to have watched those 2 work together. I felt for Regina at the end. I think of her character often. Almost as much as Charlotte Vale
@@goshmargo "A" Bette Davis performance is harder to nail down than a favourite movie; Leslie in The Letter, Regina in The Little Foxes, Stanley in In This Our Life, Judith in Dark Victory, I don't think I could pick just one. And those are just the peak years! Even with her distinctive style, she brought such variety to her characters. What I like so much about Now Voyager, aside from her performance, is the wonderful romance with Paul Henreid; he has some of the most achingly beautiful lines! And the bit with the cigarettes - - he actually made having smoke blown into your face sexy!
Steve-a-rino! Big fan here!! Love your work - your impressions are the greatest - I swear!! "Anybody here from Brooklyn?!" Love your Susan Hayward!!!!! Have you thought about doing a video on the beautiful actress Capucine? She had a rather tragic ending. IRL she was a lesbian but ended up embarking on a two year love affair with William Holden. (He was probably hard to resist!) They remained friends until his death...you probably already know Cap was the muse of producer Charles K. Feldman. Her besties were Audrey Hepburn and Hubert de Givenchy. A very interesting, gorgeous woman who had a tragic life and ending. My two favorite films she did was Walk on the Wild Side (best opening credit scene ever) and The 7th Dawn. A real tear jerker that one. ❤❤❤
I love "walk On The Wild Side". IT's one of those "daring' 60's sex/dramas. Nelson Algren, same author as "The Mn With The Golden Arm'. And lesbian madam Barbara Stanwyck hitting Capucine because she wants Laurance Harvey.! I'll put it on my 'to do" list. Thanks for watching and for the delightful comments.

Just watched "Deception" today w/Bette, Paul Henreid, and the fabulous Claude Rains. Not sure if you've done this one (will look through your catalog),but definitely a worthy candidate . Take care and have a great weekend. 👍
My intro to classic films came with The Little Foxes. My favorite is Bad and Beautiful..because I love love love Gloria Graham, so sexy..and the way Lana Turner just hammed it to the hilt. I loved it. I really miss my friends that I would hang with and watch these. We would quote lines, read between the lines . Well , just wanted to say thanks for the channel. It cheered me up today.

Nobody does Bette Davis like Steve Hayes. He cracks me up every time!
"Thaaaaaaaaaaaaank yho! I think I luf yho." LOL!
Ah, love getting my Steve fix. He's so awesome. And that Bette Davis impression is SO good!
Thanks, Buddy! Means alot to me .So glad you are watching!
You’re spot on about Bette! He needs a long cigarette holder!
Nothing brightens up my day more than a tired old queen! So good to see you again. I will have to watch this movie now.
Yes, I think you'll love it! Thanks so much!

I love getting these notifications from you Steve and such great stories too! Hope you and Johnny are both well! ☺❤
We are both well and SAFE and I love that you love the episodes. Thanks for watching, My Friend! Stay SAFE!
One of my favourites as well. She was magnificent and I loved your Bette Davis impression.
Awwww, thanks Helen! Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE. Best; Steve
The light house romance scene is so great. Even the uphostery is the best... THOSE PLAID CHAIRS !
This one is so romantic. It's one of those curl up on a Sunday afternoon in the early Spring,, with a hot cuppa' and indulge yourself films. I love the score too. Max Steiner always does it for me. Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
I loved hearing how your passion for all of this got started! Thank you for sharing:) the chihuahua addition to the intro was just icing on the cake !
Thanks so much! He's the newset member of the TOQ family! His name is OSO and he belongs to Johnny... I'm not going to tell the dog that he has a fan... he'll want his own show. Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE. Best; Steve
I always loved Carol Burnett's take on this. It was a riot. FYI... the little man in the Monopoly game is name Uncle Pennybags.
I know, I dated him...he hadn't a CLUE. LOL!

Favorite moment:
"Wedding reception, Pat standing on 2nd floor level of the Mansion by the banister, tosses the wedding bouquet to Kate looking up from below, Kate steps to the side, bouquet of flowers lands on the floor".
Such a BETTE DAVIS moment.
I love too and the way Pat snactches Bill away from Kate at the sqaure dance. Brilliant!
Such a great treat to see your video during this very hot and long summer!! I have never seen this Bette Davis movie and now with your exceptional review will move it up on my list of must-see movies. Thanks for always bringing much-needed warmth and comic relief in these very challenging times!! God Speed and cheers!!
Robert, you are so generous. Thank you, you made my day! I hope this finds you well, happy and staying SAFE! Thanks for watching!
Best; Steve
Steve is the best. I never smile more than when I watch one of his episodes. Thanks Steve and Johnnie.

I miss you both...I love when you do Bette! You do it so well .....
Thank you so much for watching!
Hilarious. 🤣
Thanks so mcuh for watching! I love "Mr SKeffington " too and it's on my list!
I needed that Bette Davis impersonation. You always pick me up when I'm down, Steve. I love that this echoes the theme of another Bette fave, 'Dead Ringer.'
Thanks, Albert, your lovely comments do the same for me!
Welcome Back Steve not a favorite of mine but just having you break it down is always delightful. Stay safe
Thanks so much for watching! Stay well, stay happy and above all, stay SAFE. Best; Steve
when you said that Charlie Ruggles looked like the guy on the monopoly board with his mustache, I lost it. I laughed so hard, I couldn't look at him with a straight face the rest of the clip. you are such a great classic film reviewer. I'm binge watching a many of your videos as I can.
WOW! This made my day! Thank you so much!! I hope you subscrobe and continue to watch TOQ! Happy Holidays! Steve

LOL!

This is Bette Davis Great introduction. What a perfect storm of a movie. Always so happy to see you. Thank you!
Max Stein also did the music for Bette Davis/Jezebel. Remember the beautiful waltz in that film?
Yes, and "The Sisters", "Dark Victory","The Old Maid", "All This and Heaven Too", "Te bride Came C.O.D>", "The Letter," "All This and Heaven Too", "The Great Lie","Now, Voyager" (Oscar), "Watch On The Rhine", "The Corn Is Green " and "Beynd The Forestt". I wanted to see how many I could list before I had to look it up. I did pretty well. LOL!

Stay SAFE!

The Corn is Green was just a FABULOUS movie!
I so agree. One of my all time favorite Bette's and it should have gotten her another nomination. Everyone in it is perfectly cast. Irving Rapper was a much maligned and underrated director, especially by Bette.

Loving Bette more and more the older I get. I really loved this one. And your synopsis.
Brilliant review - I loved this film and am so glad you did this!

Once Davis get's her hook in you, you might as well give up, give in and have the time of your life! Enjoy and thanks so much for watching!
Whether she was a bad twin sister or just a sister, she could play the BAD sister better than anyone. To wit: "In This Our Life."

My mother brought me to classic movies. Thanks Mom. And againThanks Steve! I was named in honor Kathryn but my mother changed it to "Kathy"🤤 named for the incredibly Dumpkof Female lead in Wuthering Heights.

YUP!
Glen Ford and Rita Hayworth in Gilda and the other two films they made together personify screen chemistry to me.
They were great together.
I recently saw the spoof version of this on The Carol Burnett Show. I think it was called “A Swiped Life”; as usual, it was hilarious 😂
LOL! ..."Oh, Paaaaaaaaaaatsy!"

The Corn is Green is an absolutely fabulous movie! Bette was amazing and so is the story! Ps….. I am 80!
PS...I'm not gonna tell you how old I am, but you can find out by reading the cave paintings! LOL! Thanks for watching! Best; Steve
Please review one of my absolute favorite oldies…….”A Letter from an Unknown Woman” with Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan. A classic love story from circa 1939, I think. Please review it!
I remember this film really turning me onto Dane Clark. Man, he was hot! I barely even noticed Glenn Ford.
Thank you for the suggestions! I'll jot them down. And thank you for watching and for your lovely comments!
Were we separated at birth? You could be my twin! Carol Burnett's parody "A Swiped Life" was hilarious. "Hi Patsy!"
Have a wonderful Halloween and thanks again for watching! best; Steve

I had a very similar introduction to Bette Davis by a friend's mother. My first BD movie was Now, Voyager & it changed my life!
Dear Mr Harlow...weren't we lucky?!? Love that Bette!
I will if you keep watching them! Thanks so much!
THANK YOU FOR CONTINUING TO DO THESE REVIEWS❣️And I love your impersonations. Bette Davis, Mary Boland, etc ❤️💕
Thank you, Omar! So glad you like them and be sure to subscribe if you haven't already. Stay SAFE! Steve
Love Carol Burnett's send up entitled A Swiped Life
I iked it too. " Oh, PAAAAAAAAAAATSY!"
I love watching you imitating Bette Davis!
Thanks Miguel! I'm not sure she would have apporved and always think she'll be waiting for me at the Gates Of Heaven with an ax...oh, well. Steve
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ and i love watching you imitating Kate Hepburn too. it's so funny :)
@@STEVEHAYESTOQ will you make a rita hayworth´s movie review?
"The moral of the story is that Bette Davis made you gay?" LOL! hahahaha

In the interest of Glenn Ford he was also great in "Blackboard Jungle".
He definitely had his moments.
Oh, I must watch this one! Double Bette! Thanks so much for sharing!!! 😄
The perfect way to celebrate Labor Day! Enjoy!
Hi Steve.
Love this Bette Davis movie! Great to binge watch this with "Dead Ringer" and "The Dark Mirror". Can help you not feeling so bad that you're an only child. lol!
Just watched "Deception" today w/Bette, Paul Henreid, and the fabulous Claude Rains. Not sure if you've done this one (will look through your catalog),but definitely a worthy candidate . Take care and have a great weekend. 👍
It's on my "to do" list. Thanks so much for watching!
