  • @JohnMichaelBurns
    @JohnMichaelBurns 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The important thing to remember here is that "overdrive" is a category of circuit, whereas tubescreamer is a specific circuit. A selection of "overdrives" would include similar sounding pedals that use different kinds of circuits (transistor based, soft clipping, hard clipping, CMOS based etc) whereas a "tubescreamer comparison" will feature a selection of pedals that all use the exact same circuit with small value changes to one or two components. Tubescreamer is a specific circuit with lots of indistinguishable copies so if you compare tube screamers you are just comparing more or less the same exact circuit made by different manufacturers. It's worth noting that the only circuit that really stood out was the sidecar which uses germanium diodes which makes for a significant departure from the classic TS circuit and which will give a fuzzier tone.
    A more interesting comparison would be a blindfold comparison of totally different dirt pedals e.g. a tube screamer, a rat, a big muff, a red llama, a blues driver, a klon, a blues breaker etc. I'd be more interested in seeing if a guitarist can correctly identify really famous pedals than if they could distinguish between several copies of the same circuit.

    Surprised the Maxon OD-808 wasn't on the list. That's what I use and I love it. I've had the thing for 15 years easy and still going strong.
    I really liked the EHX pedal here though. It had a little more clarity, note articulation and a greasy quality that I liked. It has that Tubescreamer vibe, but with an added dimension. Also, Pete kept using the adjective nasally when he heard an overtone he didnt like, but I would use muddy or muffled. Nasally is not really a TS9 circuit quality in my opinion...

    I’m a shitty novice guitar player who played to some extent a decade ago. I got a custom 60s squier tele recently and accidentally watched a JHS show, now I can’t stop buying mostly ‘inexpensive/affordable’ pedals last couple days.
    I’m writing this as I wait my order from Andertons, dpd messed up my order and have to wait until through the weekend. In that order there’s a mini tube screamer, watching this gave me so much pleasure.
    I also ordered a Boss EQ on reverb during and ordering a Moonshine, just because I liked Josh this past week and it looks and sounds cool.
    Yet I’ll tell you, this is the last one! No more guitar gear until I get MORE GOOD
