      I've got a beautiful old split cane rod that looked unused when I found it at the local amenitie site and someone gifted me a beautiful fly reel with 4wt floating line almost brand new it was my friends who was left it along with tons of Stuff when his mum passed away and he said he has zero interest in taking up fly fishing so I could take it to go with the split cane and it matches beautifully, the only thing is I'm too scared to use it as I'm awful at casting and I wouldn't want to damage it, instead I still use the same £39.99 starter kit 7wt rod and reel that came with a box of 50 fly patterns tippets leader etc and I've had a couple nice trout but I also put a fast sinking line on and fish for Pollack with it and it's so much fun hooking a 5lb Pollack off the rocks compared to a half pound trout, anyway I mentioned this as you said you set yourself a budget and the cheap starter kit is good because if you break the rod its cheap to replace and better to get practice in with something cheap get the hang of it then when you can afford it buy a better rod and casting will come pretty easily compared to a cheap rod but you wouldn't mind breaking a cheap rod while practicing.
      Good luck

    Thanks man; no, like really thanks! Today has brought me some seriously sad news but your video has given me a few valued moments to appreciate life. Not just mime but others. My mother in law died half an hour ago and, no, she wasn't your typical mother in law. My dear wife is with her in Germany but I am here in Spain fulfilling my residency requirements. I feel like I have failed them both. Gutted! The phone pinged and, for whatever reason I clicked on to it.
    My absolute favourite you tuber! You were out of your comfort zone but doing your best, just like me at that moment. Thank you. I don't quite know what it was that you shared but it immediately inspired me to tune into your positively. This is not a 'One off". I've been here since the beginning. You are not just a TH-cam fisherman but a positive lifestyle inspiration. Thank You

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm really sorry to hear about your mother in law and, in my opinion (for what it's worth), you can't have failed either of them. Completing residency obligations will provide amazing opportunities and a particular way of life for you and your wife long into the future, even if it feels terrible in the moment. Despite the awful news I have to thank you for sticking with the channel and writing such an open comment, reading it has been a real an eye opener for me at how far reaching a seemingly simple 15 minute fishing video can be, and what an effect my videos can have. Life can get boring living in a bubble and being out of your comfort zone is the only way of expanding that bubble, and it sounds like you're doing just that by gaining your Spanish residency. THANK YOU and best wishes for the future, Nathan.

    excellent film, my friend! lovely location, the Cheviots are magnificent! I agree about the light , balanced tackle thing, I use a 3 weight 7 ft rod on my local woodland stream, a half pounder is a good fish, but they fight like stink.
    I don't think id ever go down to 1 lb tippet though, 3 lb flouro is as light as id ever go for trout, much heavier if using streamer lures (I bet in those conditions you'd have a chance of a much bigger one on the streamer) id save the 1lb for match fishing on canals for tiny roach!
    hands up, Im bloody hopeless with lure fishing off the rocks!!

    Great video bud and well done on getting that brownie, they go pretty darn hard! I dunno if it's much help, but I've found fishing with a wool indicator to be a useful alternative to a big dry: easier to mend without ruining presentation, less tangles and you can change the depth of the nymph. Then again, your fish took the daddy, so what do I know! 😉

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Stephen, Aye, you need a permit and rod licence to fish on all of the rivers in our area. Some permits are cheaper than others but have a look on tyneriverstrust.org there are loads of beats to go at and they're dirt cheap. Fishpal is also worth a look. Northumbrian Anglers Federation is a good club to join since it's cheap and have a lot of water to fish, including a stretch on the Tyne. Hope this helps

    I guess the daddy long legs is a fairly good indicator if your eye sight is good but I couldn't see one 5 ft away so wondered do you ever use a coloured indicator? I see a few guys who use a booby or a pink shrimp fly on the top dropper as an indicator but also has the advantage of being a fly so if a fish goes for it instead of the nymphs below you have a fair chance of hooking up , I ask because I see alot of people especially in the USA use a sliding barrel indicator luminous green which I thought would spook fish .

    • @SlippyLimpets
      @SlippyLimpets  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used those coloured barrel indicators but found fish went for them, so changed over to this technique to fish a dry and a nymph at the same time. A brightly coloured floating fly would work the same as the barrel, but with the added benefit of having a hook. Hope this helps

    Full marks for making the videos, but I'd recommend some casting lessons - you hit the water several times during your false casts and that really doesn't help. Your line crashes into the water on the final cast a lot more than it should as well, so spooking the fish is a real possibility.
