I absolutely love dry fly fishing especially on the river, its a beautiful thing watching a trout taking your dry fly, great content, 👌🏽tightlines fella, you presented this video very very well 👍🏼
Top vid.i am a complete beginner to fly fishing, the way you explain to a complete novice is to me perfect. I have a home in france and their are some amazing rivers where I live in Central loire. Cheers Nick
Great to hear Nick, thank you! Sportfish have some great fly fishing beginner's videos over on their channel which you may enjoy: th-cam.com/video/otAQ7ff-y60/w-d-xo.htmlsi=gza0Z1Cwc9SAs0R1
As an American I know Central Loire well, because my wife is from there and my 2 weights and 3 weights dry dropper set ups have done well there!!! good luck sir......
Fantastic information for a beginner. A lot of videos don't bother to explain the foundations of fly fishing, upstream, downstream, wet, dry, nymphs etc. These are all foreign to a beginner. This video was really useful.
Your presentation is very nice indeed. I'm experienced but enjoy learning from other people.Too many people on You Tube make fly fishing out to be so complicated and puzzling. that many beginners give up in confusion or exasperation. You are encouraging and have given enough support for anyone to have a go on a stream. I just love streams above all else, and little ones especially. best Wishes form Australia. :-)
As a newcomer to fly fishing this video has been an excellent learning curve for me. I was actually searching for nymphing tutorials but because my club really frowns upon the use of indicators, the second part using a dry fly as an indicator and how to tie it 'New Zealand' style, I can now give this a bash with some confidence...hopefully. So I've stumbled on this accidentally by being drawn to your video title. Thanks for taking the time to explain all methods clearly.
Thanks Nick this took me back to my younger days in the late 70s early 80s fishing on the River Taw. Live in Yorkshire now and thinking of doing a little fly fishing on some of the local streams
Thank you for not shying away from eating part of your catch. Too my liking, this option is often nowadays frowned upon by the catch & release fraternity. Most of my catch is returned today but every now & then I do take a fish or two for the pot & oh my, do wild river trout taste good!! 😘👍🍻
After many, many years away from fly fishing, I am now in a position, and have the motivation, to start again. This has helped to settle my mind in how I should approach it and the kit I'll need. Lovely video and great work 👌🏼
hi nick i'm new to fly fishing as i've coarse fished for over 40 years.i have been fly fishing twice on lakes and managed to catch a few trout.i have a 9ft airflo 5/6 rating rod and reel and am planning on tackling a river in the coming months.thanks for the video very informative.
Thanks so much for this Nick. Small river fishing is next on my to-do fly fishing bucket list. Thanks also for the lowdown on the tackle, so many videos on youtube omit this and it's so important.
Great video Nick, I have course fished for 30 years and am the bailiff on my local river Dane in Cheshire, I have bought I small rod and reel set up similar to the one you have shown and am going to give fly fishing a go this spring, I like the fact how you have striped it all back and simplified it. What has always put me and I think many other people off is we all think its too complicated, im heading out next month with a few flies and going to give it a go!!
Never done it, but I have bought a 5 weight combo to get started.....Hoping to try it for Chub etc on my local River Nene....I even bought some chest waders last week......I'm into lure fishing, so this is the next step.... I certainly enjoyed the tips, especially the NZ dropper....Hmmm ?
Grat video, thank you. As a newbie to any fishing, it would be great to see a video on river etiquette - i.e if someone is already on the river, do you move downstream or upstream, & how far away is required / acceptable?
Hi Nick really enjoyed the video, so thanks. Planning on getting some kit to fish small rivers and really like the reel you were using in the video. Can you tell me what make it is and maybe recommend a reel to match the Hardy Shadow 8ft 4wt I plan to buy?
Thank you Graham. This is the Ross Evolution LTX Reel - you can take a closer look online & the full specs at www.farlows.co.uk/ross-evolution-ltx-fly-reels.html
I'm moving from Colorado in the U.S to the UK next month. I'm a bit confused by the whole beat system in the UK. Is there public water that a properly licensed angler can fish? How can I find where it's legal to fish and not private?
Public water with free fishing is rare in the UK, apart from the coast where all fishing is free. Local tackle shops will be able to offer advice, the other alternative is to check locations via: fishinginfo.co.uk/index.html
Most modern river lines come in a Weight Forward and a Double Taper option. Double Taper lines will offer more delicate presentation to those who want it, but modern Weight Forward line technology makes them great all-rounders and easier for beginners to get to grips with.
Lovely river, lovely video and Nick, if you see this, I hope all is well with you.
with 60 plus years of fly fishing everywhere!! I must add!!!!! excellent tutorial for new and experienced wet liner's......GOOD JOB

Thank you!
This channel is really nice I'm pretty new to fly fishing and all these other channels make it seem like it's impossible to learn
Thank you Garrett! Hopefully you have time to check out some of the other videos, there's a 4 part series on fly lines that may be helpful.

Thanks, Nick, I recognise that water, fond memories of catching with you there, and of your guided trips on the Mole. Happy days!

Brilliant video - many thanks
Great video. I've got a season ticket for the local stream and struggled a wee bit with the endless bank of trees and bushes. Still great tips.
Great information for a beginner!
Excellent video! Great information.

I agree, I don't like to see rainbows in a river. Rivers are for browns and the lakes are for rainbows. Nice video.
Great video thanks, going on a river tomorrow
Brilliant thanks for sharing
Thank you for the info man!!
Really interesting.Cheers!
Fantastic advice ✌️
Thanks for watching!
Nice video
Thanks Nick, super sport, ;-)

At last someone taking a fish home.
i wanna learn cos theres pretty much nowhere that allows floats or spinners
Gently. That's the key ....not a "spaghetti cast " or too heavy
line weight . No splash downs on landing...!!
Subtitles in Spanish, from Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina
Is that line floating line?
Hi Megan, thank you for your question. Yes, Nick is fishing with a full floating Cortland 444 Sylk fly line
Why a weight forward for river fishing ?
