Stalking Brown Trout With Dry Flies | Fly Fishing in Northumberland

  • I joined a local fly fishing club to gain access to a local, urban river. It's a lovely little river with plenty of wild brown trout eating insects off the surface. My fly fishing skills were a little rusty and it took a wee while to get into the swing, but ended up landing a new PB brown trout on a dry fly.
    Hope you enjoy!

Never easy but so worthwhile when you can land one. The camera doesn't begin to do the colours justice, stunning little fish. Well done on nabbing a few.

It's such an engaging way of fishing, see the fish, try to figure out what they're eating, cast and hopefully hook one. Love it. Thanks for the comment

I've been fishing another Northumberland river, dead drifting spiders.
Every 3rd cast I retrieve, and I'm getting as many fish on the retrieved fly as the drift. Sometimes it seems like there is nothing in a pool, the moved fly is the only thing that gets a take.

Thanks for your videos, I always enjoy. I fish for mackerel and pollack on the rocky coast of Maine, USA and have learned a few things watching you.
I always appreciate TH-camrs not saying where they fish specifically. Spot burning sucks. Secret spots get trashed and poachers hammer the fish.
    Good luck!

You never give up Nathan, that stream reminds me so much of where I fished as a lad, mostly 4 to 6 ounce wild brownies but the last time I went I got one of 15 ounces. Soon after it was badly polluted by a big housing estate being built and rerouted underground, the M23 is over it now! Thanks for sharing, take care, Norfolk Ray

For smaller rivers like that with hard access, try popping your rod through one of the gaps in the trees, and just plop it in. I sometimes add a small piece of shot when "plopping" about a foot above the fly, settles the trace in the breeze.

vastly improved fly fishing skills there mister, good to see
it's amazing what these recovering rivers can produce, most people just take one look at the milky water and slimy rocks, and head out of town to the "proper" rivers!
you ought to give the streamers a go, you'll see more 2 pounders and the takes make you jump out of your skin! there's a bloke from your neck of the woods on utube, nymphing newt, I think ??? check out his streamer lure stuff. Nice..

Yea, it’s often the case in a lot of rivers and probably best it stays that way.
The sunny old NE has been a bit of a struggle as of late for me on the silvers. Not helped by the sea temps actually going down over the past month! Finally firing up however, with a nice dozen earlier on in the week. Hopefully back out on the boat after it’s repairs and some night time forays on the shore.

Great video, I'm not to keen on club's getting to privatise rivers, theirs a couple of beautiful rivers in Douglas that meet and both of them are private which is a bit unfair when it's £500 to become a member and your licence on top, people like me don't get into club's like that anyway.
Great video lost audio a couple of times but still lovely fishing 🎣

    • @SlippyLimpets

Thanks Robbie. I'm not really into clubs either, luckily the one on this water was only £75 for the year, and they didn't have too many rules. That said, they have just banned pics/videos on social media because of poaching problems, which means I can no longer make videos there. Shame since it's a lovely little river and very close to my house. Glad you liked the vid and tight lines👍🎣

I'm 12 again! The difference between being a kid and being grown up is that you get taken to task as an adult for doing (almost) exactly the same thing if you haven't arranged appropriate licences and what-not. Or maybe I was lucky not to get nabbed. LMAO - I was genuinely thinking that I might suggest that you go full-on Geordie for a moment in a future video to see how many subs can understand now that your viewership has become wide. At 25:25 you went and did it. Good fish will do that to ya. Mowgli goes to Mowgli. So it's done. I really enjoyed that one. Cheers Nathan. Dave.
