An alternate option without painting at all and going right to black is using ZEP Industrial Purple in a bucket, just get like two to three gallons in a bucket and just dip headlight/backlight housing for about 5 to 10 mins then rise it out with water to remove the soapy foam and Tada! My first time i did it over night, it was overkill hehe. But super happy with the outcome.
For headlights, this is only if you are doing Projectors and or Resto Mod Projectors since the chrome backing on them will be necessary if using traditional bulbs.
I was intimidated at first but one day I had my headlight level adjuster broke off and it would not pass inspection so I figured if i have to buy a new one might as well play with this scrap one first and I was surprised how easy it came apart I epoxy glued the adjuster back together and resealed with the same glue it already had on there and it has no leaks no nothing passed the inspection and works just fine still, I didnt use an oven either just an electric house room heater radiator thing, it doesnt take much
Worlds better!! I’m lucky that all my vehicles had already come with colored headlights, but I had a old civic that I had wondered if this could be done to. Great video!! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much for the tip. I've tried painting the inside fitting of headlight. However, under extreme heat, the paint melts and caused some really bad overlapping blisters. I'm in the process of re-doing it and will try to follow your advice. Curious if you have any updates on how headlight held up all these years?
Where r u located do u do headlights n taillights I have clear taillights with chrome inside but I want them lime green inside n the inside of the headlights not the projector part just the outer inside if u can do it let me know n how much my drivers taillights has condensation in it not sure why think its the seal I dried it with a dryer but it keeps fogging up n unfogging can I fix it n paint them pls let me know ty
Looks awesome but I’m pretty sure the seal is there for a reason and by breaking the factory seal won’t that allow moisture to get in and fuck em up completely!
What tape did you use for the chrome reflector? I want to paint my headlights but the reflector for the turn signal is attatched to the bezel so I'm going to have to tape off the reflector but I don't want the tape to peel up the chrome
I have blacked out headlights but on the side marker lights the light bulb socket or plug is white in sticks out like a sore thumb how can I paint black or does someone sell a back plug for that 95 Chevy Tahoe
Just something you need to know: that is not chrome you are painting. It is aluminium applied to plastic parts by vapour deposition. It's an awfully long time since headlight reflectors were actually chrome! the part you painted completely black you could have put through the dishwasher to remove the aluminium and then painted the virgin plastic (usually PC, sometimes UP - look for the code on the part). Either method id valid though and arguably the aluminium is a bettter surface to spray to than most plastics. looks a lot better after though!
Hey, I am going to redo my headlights, and one of them is really bad, so i got to remove the entire UV Coating of it. Should I use transparent plastic primer before applying Clear coat?
can you use any acryllic based paint for painting your headlights? and can you use black 3.0, the darkest available paint to paint the headlights or would that make the light darker? is metallic paint inside the headlights better for the chrome reflectors?
@@WeekendWarriors87 yeah i did it on my motorcycle (on purpose), its work, still bouncing the light, but its not looking good when light is on. So yeah, dont do that
Parts of the chrome-look are "working" areas that reflect light (directly behind the bulbs for example), but it's okay to paint 'non working' areas, like the surround of a projector. I'm doing a similar project at the moment as a mini series and am going into quite deep detail if you want to take a look.
Good tips but I cannot lie when I say I laughed rather hard when I saw you put the heat gun into a carboard box and support it with a red can that says FLAMABLE in big letters and has a picture of fire!
I did mine red just hope cops don’t try and pull me over but don’t think they could do anything about it bc the bulbs and light source aren’t red just the outter part for asthetic purposes guess I’ll find out 🤣😂🤷🏽♂️
Headlight reflectors are not chrome. It is aluminium applied to the plastic by vapour deposition. Obviously, the "working" surfaces have to be shiny reflective but otherwise, I agree about the overuse of chrome / chrome-look. I've got to replace the projectors in my headlights, so I'm doing a mini-series about the job, including a little modest customisation with both black and body colour.
I also don't like Chrome. Did my chrome delete on my front grille and rear the other day. Not as pro as you but the car looks much better and different
Be careful recommending people melt sealer to split headlights mate. Get them to research their car first. I have an e93 LCI that i want to do this to, but they actually plastic weld the lenses on the LCI headlights, and trying this will likely have people melting their 1000 pound uk (each side) headlights if they dont know that. @@customspraymods oh yeah ten minutes wont hurt im just thinking of "The Public". If it doesnt work in 10 mins some might be tempted to try a bit longer. The guy who clued me up on my bmw headlights (and quoted me about 6-700 quid to do it all for me, to indicate how difficult mine are to seperate) said he gets quite alot of this style light that are actually melted for just that reason. Ha ha, yeah, that's because it's not actually chrome. It's aluminium applied by vapour deposition for a chrome-look and highly reflective surface (for the 'working' surfaces of the lights. When the individual plastic parts are being made it is actually cheaper to paint them black than apply aluminium, hence 'base' cars getting black and higher trim levels getting chrome-look.
I really love how the metallics shine in the light in the headlights
You nailed that! What a difference! Well done!
Kudos, not many gun guys would have the balls to delve into retrofit territory like that.
My aunt will kill me if i put my headlight in oven 🤣🤣🤣
LOL!

Holy shit I would have scrapped the whole project once I knew an oven was involved..good on you!

It’s actually very easy, I’ve done it with no oven just a heat gun but I recommend using the oven, it doesn’t damage the headlight
Yep it is just about getting it up to temp, to soften.
You DO NOT need an Oven guys. Use a heat gun to melt the glue. Thank me later. I repeat DO NOT USE AN OVEN
But then you cook food in there

Thing is with your videos as awesome as they are you make the most fiddly jobs look so simple lol
Love the content really thinking of doing mine now, cheers mate

im not normally a fan of black anything, but you make it look good
Holy mate that's a lot of work but looks so much better!
Looks a lot better than if you had just gone with blacked-out lens covers. Great job!
That's...how you lose brightness. Which is what headlights are for!
That is just beautiful!
Nice video homeboy that's hard-core Gangstas paradise. I want to learn as much from you as I can I love diy garage much ♥️ from west Hollywood
aussie channel ! subbed!
edit:that box oven trick was awesome ! great idea
Glad to know 1K paint will work. I would have worried about heat damage (lamps get real hot during operation).
Not watched it all, because I`m trawling the Net for detail on chrome paint for vintage reflector lenses.....but don`t LED bulbs run cool?
Looks good mate, did this on my old corolla and made it much meaner looking
Did you also scuff and spray adhesion promoter on the chrome around the projector and blinke, that you black chromed with tinted clear?
Awesome job alot of work but looks really cool
More content please. Love it
Man that is Gold! 👍👍👍
Great great job looks fab 👏👏
Did you have to use a hight temperature resistant paint?
Looks good does give it a more aggressive look to it now
Hahaha, you got that fly good and proper with that clear ...
Excellent video
How's the headlights so far? no moisture build up from the inside?
Looks good. Great stuff as usual
Did you end up doing the chrome trim under the windows? Looking to do the same to mine!?
Did you place the heatgun on a flammable product?
I found wax & grease remover works great for removing butyl glue if you're a messy person like me
Man, that looks OEM! Do you get people asking where you got those headlights from?
your link for sealant is another link for the scrub pads..
Nice work brother
I jist wonder how that tinted clear sticks to a reflector long term, because that would be my go to

Those parts that you tinted with the clear base coat, did you have to scuff it up and spray adhesion promoter first?
Is the headlight interior chrome to deflect light properly an painting these parts effect headlight beam performance?
Tim Barnett no I also mentioned the new cars have this blacked out from factory

Roast headlights for xmas eve
All you had to do is dip the chrome parts in grease remover for 5 minutes. Will strip it right down to the shiny black plastic, no need to paint
