- Spring came very early this year! Maple syrup season in our area is typically at the end of March/beginning of April. But this year, thanks to very warm weather at the end of February, the trees started running sap in the first week of March. We had to hurry to prepare everything we needed if we didn't want to miss it! We built a rudimentary fire pit using old cinderblocks and collected dry standing fire wood, along with scrap wood from the cabin build. We tapped 29 trees and we were able to boil for 4 days in the span of a week, collecting a total of 180L of maple sap and boiling it down to a total of 6.5L of maple syrup.
We absolutely loved this process and are already thinking about how to improve our system to collect even more syrup next year!
Hello Nick and Maela: a big thank you for bring us along, I found this very interesting and I have to say this seem real easy to do. Now let's see the pan cakes and waffles being made later on and then you too can enjoy this again. Have a good time and enjoy cabin life, stay safe and I will see you both next time.
We didn’t expect it to be so easy! It’s time consuming for sure, but what a blast! Such a gift to be able to relax around a fire and smell the sugar concentre slowly over time. Truly blessed :)
❤❤💯💯
Love watching you two youngsters working together. Nothing tops teamwork and you two set the standard. Nicky, you've got a real keeper there in Maëla, she's a great young lady and partner! Thank you for sharing your life's adventures with us. Love... and bring on the pancakes and waffles!!!
Thank you so much :) we’re indeed very happy when we work together! Take care :)
You two are more than amazing. When I see that house you built with your hands like no other in the world and now finally making syrup I'm just more than impressed. When I was a kid I was the second generation off of the farm. My grandpa farmed 50 acres with a mule, never owned a tractor and fed 11 kids. All his kids except one "moved to the city". I lived for a couple years about a mile from him so tho my dad wasn't a farmer, I got to experience a lot of what went on in the old way of farming. He always had a stand of sugar cane and when it got ready, he had a cauldron that he could put over his black smith fire pit that was probably about 8 or 10 inches deep but probably 18 to 24 inches around and it formed a shallow bowl toward the bottom. I didn't understand the science then, but now I see that the evaporation area was quite large compared to the contents. Smart. He would hook that mule up to a metal cylinder that had a companion piece and they both had gears at the bottom so that when the mule turned one, it turned the other and of course they met each other and you stuck the cane in there and it would smash it absolutely flat squeezing every drop of that sweet cane juice out that would drip down into a run off that went into a barrel which collected the juice. Through out the day they would boil the juice down and make sorghum syrup. Great thick syrup. And around the edge of the cauldron would form this taffy like candy which they would take a husk from the cane and run it around the edge to collect it and give it to us kids to eat. And that cane juice was one of the sweetest drinks you'll ever taste. Fond memories! Great job with the syrup you two!!
Wow, such a complex and beautiful expertise to have witnessed!! It sounds like great memories of another time and way of doing things.. you’re very lucky to have experienced it first hand :) thank for sharing and bringing us along!! It’s always a pleasure to read you :)
🤩😘😘😘👌👌👌
So much work, so much fun, so much satisfaction. It could all be read on your faces. New skills, new supplies, new adventure. Well done, the both of you. 🙏🏻🇺🇸🇨🇦

Thank you so much! God bless :)
😘❤❤💯💯💯💯
Wow you got so much syrup! That is great for your first time boiling sap. And as anyone who enjoys making maple syrup, the talk is always of “next year”. And so your syrup making grows and grows. But it is always fun and very rewarding.
It’s scary how quickly we got into making the syrup ;) after the first day of boiling, we were already talking about expending ahaha it’s already a passion
To say it in German: Das habt Ihr gut gemacht! Thanks a lot to see and learn how Maple Syrup is made! Good Job! Fun to see every episode since the beginning! :-) Kay
Thanks, Kay :) glad you enjoyed it!
😘😘💯💯❤❤👌👌👌👌
Great job brings back memories of a month when I was a little boy, my aunt and uncle and mom and dad
Your family had a maple syrup farm? It most be such a great place for a kid :)
Votre sirop a l’air délicieux.
Merci encore!
well done
😘😘💋💋👌👌
What a magical and fun episode! I’ve been hoping for a video like this from you, and it didn’t disappoint. Thank you, and happy pancakes days! By the way, I really prefer the rudimentary method, it brings back a time gone by, and evokes memories of school 16mm movies teaching us in western Canada all about maple syrup making (I’m betraying my age!😂). I loved it then and I’m loving it now, with the two of you. An absolutely delightful visual feast.
Thank you so much! Hearing about those 16mm movies brought a big smile to my face :’) glad we could remind you of that time in your life :)
😘😘❤❤💯💯
That looks so fun , wish i could try it one day.
Hope you can too! It was a beautiful experience and i would recommend it to everyone ;)
My grandfather had a sugar bush on his farm . We had “maple syruple” on the table every day and what you made there definitely looks like “maple syruple”.
Thanks for showing us all.
😍😍😘😘💯💯💯
Congratulations. What a happy moment for you both. It is great to see another video from you. I look forward to seeing more from you. Hugs from, Gina Mac of Queensland, Australia. 😊❤️🙏🇦🇺
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it :) Yes we're excited to start putting out more regular videos come summertime
👌👌❤❤
Thank you for your sharing life is so sweet
😘😘💋👌👌👌
I think that your definition of ‘surprisingly easy’ is vastly different to mine!
Ahaha we most have made it looks harder than it is then ;) most of the time we were just sitting around the fire, enjoying the spring weather!
💯💯💯👌👌👌👌❤❤❤
Wow, yummy, congratulations, you did great.
Thank you :)
😘😘❤❤💯💯💯
This was fun to watch. Now I know how my uncle was able to make his Maple Syrup from his farm in Illinois. For beginners, you did quite well, as I would have expected. I'm very happy to see you again, and I hope it won't be long until the next time. Keep well!
Thank you for your kind words, Charles! It’s nice to know people can make syrup down in Illinois :)
welcome back!
Thank youu! Happy to be back :)
I had no idea you could get so much sap from so few trees, and day after day as well. Surprising..
We didn’t know either! There’s also a lot of factors that influence how much they give. Like after a rain fall? They give a lot since they just got all that water. Same happens after a very warm day where a lot of snow melted. But a cold and windy day? You get almost nothing!
🤩🤩😘😘💯💯👌👌
Yall are a motivation for what other couples should strive to be more like. The amount of talent you have with wood building is amazing. Thank you for your insight and education 🙏 👍 👏 major fan from Denver, Colorado
Wow, thank you! We hope to be a good inspiration for people of all ages :)
😘😘❤❤❤💯💯💯
Thoroughly enjoyed watching you make maple syrup. Always enjoyed getting maple candy when skiing at Mont Blanc. It was also great to hear you talk more. Great video, love Quebec
Glad you liked it! And thank you for your kind words about our little province :)
So interesting! I've never seen the process of making maple syrup before this.😊👍
Glad to be the one to introduce you :) it was very interesting for us too, doing it for the first time !
Great to see you two again. Excellent work with the syrup making! Take good care.
Thanks, Pat! :)
😘😘❤❤❤💯💯💯
I can only imagine the joy of making your own maple syrup from your own trees, while living in your own cabin, that you both built with your own hands, but I know it must be quite joyous. I also know that my wife and I will be having pancakes with real maple syrup tomorrow night for dinner. Thank you so much for this adventure.
It's definitely a highlight of our life so far! Enjoy the pancakes, nothing beats real maple syrup
Only fantastic, or pardon, fantastique!
Ahaha fantastique en effet ;) thank you very much :)
😘😘🤩🤩👌👌
Amen. I'm so happy for you many blessings, and keep safe 🙏
Thank you, Nancy! Same to you :)

That was so much fun! I live in New Hampshire and have spent my whole life going to Sugar Shacks in the spring to enjoy the boiling of the maple syrup. But I've never boiled maple syrup myself. You've inspired me to try next year!! Thanks so much for sharing this with us!!
Oh that’s so great! Please do try it :) it’s so enjoyable and surprisingly easy!!

What could be better than homemade maple syrup. It's the only sweetener I use. That was a fun adventure, looked like a lot of work to me. Thank you!

😘😘💖💖💯💯👌👌👌

You really understand the process. I made maple syrup with monks at a Manitoba Monastery. They had a cute Sugar Shack and did everything in doors. Great fun fantastic food.
Oh that’s so cool! What an experience that must have been :o
@ Our Lady of the Prairies near Holland Manitoba. Great French Monks and me typically a terrible American. If you are out that way I am certain they would enjoy showing you around and sell you some Maple Syrup and Cheese.
Awesome job guys can't wait to see your next video god bless
Thanks, Tony! God bless you :)
Nice job, for the first time around! And you obviously hit it at the right time! As soon as you put those taps in, the sap was running!
We both had audible gasps when the sap flowed as soon as we hammered in the tap! We felt like little kids experiencing the world for the first time haha
Hope we see u soon great to have u back
Well that was just amazing and this 80 year old didn’t have a clue how you made maple syrup very educational video, love watching you both in whatever you do, what will you come up with !
next ❤Graham L
Oh so glad we can teach people about our little provincial pride (maple syrup) ahaha thank you so much :)
Hi N and M. Dump the syrup and carry on building log cabins. Your good at it. ❤
Nick and Maela you should rebuild the interior of the sugar shack this Spring and summer.
Yes a renovation of the sugar shack is definitely in our list of plans. Not sure when we'll have time to get to it though!
❤❤❤❤💯💯💯👌👌👌
Very good job guys, congratulations!

Congratulations guys that's pretty damn cool to be able to make your own syrup 😁
Thank you Chip!
!!!fntastic!!! Producción 6.5¡¡¡¡
😘😘❤❤👌👌👌
Very cool!
😘😘😘❤❤❤💯💯💯
Thank you for posting this video 😊 It brought back a lot of fond memories of making maple syrup with my grandfather and great uncle when I was a kid. We produced enough for personal use and a little extra for friends and neighbors. The lighter syrup got turned into granulated sugar for holiday baking and the darker was left liquid for pancakes and etc. Good job, love your videos.
Sounds like great memories :’) a maple syrup farm sounds like a nice place to grow up!
We didn’t think about turning it into granulated sugar at the end of the season,
We’ll have to look into it, thank you for the advice :)

Excellent job! It really does look like fun..
Thanks! It sure was :) can't wait for next year!
Ahh.. the most wonderful time of the year. Greeting from the Northeast in Maine. And yes, the season started early this year; we started in early February.
Yeah we think maple syrup could start to be our favorite time of year! Though fall is pretty hard to beat... Have you had a good yield this year so far?
@ about 16pints/2gallons. We just do a backyard operation
Merci Gisele, c'est très gentil!!
Giday guy's from Ottawa. My brother's and I do it as a hobby as well. Little larger scale but we have a tank to keep sap in close to the boiler it pre heats the sap so it doesn't drop the temperature as much when you add some sap. We keep the sap in the boiler 3.5 inchs deep evaporates the sap the best. You have lots of slop there you could easily do lines to run down hill to a tank. Also some of those trees you can have more than one bucket on the sunny side. Experiment and find what works best for you guy's. Great channel great job on the syrup good luck for next season.👍☕️🍻🇨🇦
Thanks Bruce! We've thought about installing the gravity tubes (the previous owners had them) but we don't really like the aesthetic of them. We find it ruins the look and feel of the forest, so we'll stick to the buckets for the near future at least. We might try 2 buckets on big tress next year!
MUITO BOM! MUITO BOM! FANTÁSTICO!PARABÉNS, 🤪🙏👏
Where are you guys? Missing you guys on the weekly!
Awesome job guys ! Who doesn't like Maple syrup :) Maybe you will have time to get a big boiler set up for next years harvest, Time is money , being prepared is more money :) lots of trees you could gather a lot of sap water by the tank !
Yeah we're already looking to buy a bigger and more efficient boiler for next year!
all you need now is the blueberry pancakes 🥞
12:51 Nice squirrel in the back :)
Haha yeah they were going crazy this time of year! They were running around everywhere, probably thrilled to have an early spring
Wonderfully
wow beautiful very good can you fix new trees your at new house and good trees to have maple syrup wow wow 😉😊💕👍👍
Congratulations on your Maple Syrup! Your first batch - why didn’t you cover your pan of boiling liquid with a lid or tent type cover when it started snowing?? That amount of snow for that length of time really added water that had to be boiled out. Once a liquid gets to the boiling point, it doesn’t matter if it’s a gallon or 10 gallons, you’ll reach the goal just as quickly as long as the liquid stays close to the boiling temperature.
