In this episode, we fix up our rock floor, which we have been putting off for almost a year now. We then build a folding raisable ladder to reach the second floor mezzanine. This ladder is stronger and safer than our last one, so hopefully Nick won't break his arm again. Then we finished our exterior mortar, with a new mesh. This is our last mortal trial before we do the inside. Lastly, we share some footage from a recent canoe-camping trip in Killarney Provincial Park.

Just an FYI, the pipe used as a hinge for the ladder, the metal rings that are screwed to the floor to hold the pipe are Cast Iron, and can break where the screws are, you should put some support so the ladder has something to rest against when raised.
I just discovered you guys, and wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying your work. I am a retired carpenter with a specialty for rustic work. My wife and I are still living in our originally off grid and tiny cabin in the woods which we started in1971. I love the way you two work together. It is a beautiful thing to see. Nice battle scar on your arm! Hubby and I discovered your channel, and we have been binge watching your progress. On your folding ladder, would you put a rope on it to pull the ladder up when in the loft and down when ground level wanting to go up? I'm short, so I'd have to have a way to grab the ladder, haha. I see the cast has been removed. It's nice to full mobility back. Folding ladder came out nice. Keep an eye on the hinges, over time the screws can loosen. You might need bigger and longer screws in the future if they loosen too often. Looked like a nice camping trip. Great way to unwind. Thanks for the video.

@ Maybe look into a long screw that goes straight through the wood and tighten it off with a hex screw on the end?
You should wet the area of floor before applying the mortar, this will give a better bond, PS: Also add some PVA adhesive to the mix.
Nice touch with the feather in your hat. The new ladder is a great idea and addition, turned out beautifully. Such a sweet ride cutting through the water in a canoe and a lot faster than you think. Another great video from you both. Thanks for sharing.
Nick now had two feathers on his hat ahaha give him a couple more months and he might be more feather than man ;)
It was our first canoe-camping trip, so we didn’t know how much kilometers we could do in a day.. like you said, it’s a lot more than we thought! It was such a blessing to have those couple days on the water!

The camping trip was in Ontario, so in another province all together :) as for the meals, we thought about showing some of what we eat at the cabin, but it’s not really esthetic ahahah maybe once we’re more established and comfortable with a routine, we’ll add some more insight into our daily life :)

Hello Nick, it’s important to soak the rock with water before you lay your rocks onto the cement. Just thought it might be important for you to no, this just stick the rock or rocks into a bucket of water let them soak for a few minutes, and then you can place the rock onto the Cement and make your adjustments. Accordingly, that’s about it. You guys take care of yourself and God bless.😉👍👋

The loons were the highlight of the trip! It was so peaceful watching the little baby practicing her diving in the morning. We sat there watching them from the shore for almost 2 hours 😁

Since at the 30,09 minute mark of the video I saw a black bear cub whose mother will certainly not be far away and probably whose father will also be in your area, I would like to remind you that you have installed a door that opens inwards and with the 4 screws that you have fixed it will not be able to prevent the bear from breaking it and coming in to cause damage, I recommend removing the door and fixing it so that it opens outwards and naturally fixed inside the upright so that a bear cannot get its nails in to pull and open it, naturally where the door will rest you should place a 4/5 centimetre-long piece of wood, recessed into the jamb and screwed well so that the thrusts cannot break the jamb. The hinges are fine as they will only serve to open and close the door and certainly not the solidity.
That black bear was in a provincial park several hours away. We did spot one on our land a year or two ago, but he ran away quick and nothing since.

I have bears where we live, and this last time it snowed I went outside to check on everyone, and OMG, right out front of my front door was a huge turd that was bigger than my foot! Then there's a bunch of tracks walking up to my house, I checked our cameras, and there was a huge bear on our property! I haven't seen him since.

More than the quiet and peaceful build, what I love about it all is the quiet dynamic about man and woman working together. It's genuinely a partnership. I remember when Maela was on top of that roof installing the cap. Now that is a woman I can respect specially in a world where modern woman simply means a ball and chain around a man's neck. Hello Nick and Maela: your home is looking great and now your days are going to be filled with love of the nature all around you too. This hard part of the journey in building your home is almost behind you now. Well I should also say now that you are home owners you will always find something to do abound your land. Keep up the great work and it is also nice to see you scheduled some us time. Nick the arm looks like it is healing fine, but don't rush it. I found a good way to make the grout and have a better insulation value. Using conventional grout mix it with crack fill. Basically use the crack fill as u would use water.
The ladder came out nice, a nice design. What a beautiful place to go canoeing and camping.

For the ladder you may use gaz spring cylinder from automobile at Canadian Tire you will find it , it will be much srtonger. Nice job and keep going.

you had me worried with your hands in front of the planer. You never know when the planer decides not to take a bite of wood and skims across into your skin. You might be able to add end caps/wood plugs to your ladder hinge to remove the play. Good job guys. It's coming along great and you both should be very proud.

Just found you guys - great stuff - been on the treadmill watching your 2 hr + video and the time just flew by. Resting up now watching this video. Will subscribe for sure and so glad those fires in Canada haven't affected you. I might suggest a metal shield behind your wood stove to reflect more heat into the cabin and to protect the wood behind the stove. I might even order some of that health drink. For the ladder going upstairs. You could use shocks that lift a car hood or a hard shell cover for a pickup box.

I've watched your home video and I must say that amazing work congrats. I'm not sure you added enough water while darkening the concrete mortar.You should also give the concrete plenty of water until the setting time is over.

Die Steinplatten unterm Ofen sehen tatsächlich sehr schön aus. Leider war das Verlegen zu trocken und zu „luftig“. Auch die ausgebesserten Steine werden sich wieder lösen. Ein schwingender Untergrund ist grundsätzlich schwierig. Ich hätte einen elastischen Mörtel verwendet. ❤ Ich habe größten Respekt vor eurem Einsatz mit nicht elektrischen „HANDWERKZEUGEN“!!
If you use a liquid concrete binder brushed on the stones, they'll stick better, and you can mix it into the morter too,.

I would like to suggest adding another securing point on the handles, 3 points would make a fail much less likely to result in a fall.

Nick, you might want to make yourself a sturdy wooden workbench table it would be a great asset for all of your woodworking projects. 💬
more than the shock absorbers to hold the ladder you should put a "mask" inside where the tube that holds the ladder still rests now the tube will slide against the wood and you will see that by opening and closing that hole it will become too big and will end up giving way and you will probably end up in the emergency room again instead if you apply the metal "mask", let's say a sheet of metal a couple of millimeters thick with the hole where the pipe rests and 4 screws that hold the mask to the ladder upright, all inside the ladder , a sheet of metal about ten centimeters thick, 2 millimeters thick and you will have solved the problem of the tube that widens the hole in the wood of the staircase. Even the external steps are not good, if it snowed and you go down without being careful you would slip and even in this case you would do some damage to yourself, it is better to immediately make a cover that covers any snowfall on the steps and also put two pieces of wood on which to rest your hands when it comes down even in the wet.
We will probably add a handrail on the outside steps once winter rolls around. And we don't plan on raising the ladder very often, maybe a couple times a year when we have guests over. But we will monitor the wood to make sure it's not being worn down!

a place that I worked had a stairs to a second floor that had cables pulleys and the right size weights to make the stairs easy to put up and down, the weights would go up and down near the wall
Yes we thought about a counterweight system, but it adds too much clutter with the cables and weights
You might want to moisten the rocks and bottom of the floor with water before bonding it with concrete mixture.

Cool you were in Killarney. My cabin build is on the other side of Sudbury on north side of lake nippissing. I got cheap land but parts are swampy.
Spring could maybe work indeed, but maybe the resistance would be too big and shot the ladder up too quickly.. we’ll have to try it out anyways!

Nick when you do a repair like this when you remove the stone and clean out the loose cement you MUST wet the existing floor cement before you put down the new mortar and stone , why? because the new mortar when it goes down the dry existing cement wants to suck up all the water in the new cement and leave it dry and as soon as the new cement dries and the pressure-or movement you will have joint cracks. when you wet the existing cement in place and you put down new cement the existing cement is wet and so it does not take the water from your new cement and so your new cement has plenty of time to set up and not fail, so , if you already did what you show in the video already you may still time to wet the stones and mortar joints you put down with a spray bottle to help let the cement take slower to cure and do it for a few days , good luck

Nick tells me all the time to put my boots on when doing work, but I don't listen 😂 I have strong ankles. And I usually don't go deep enough to get my head wet, it's too cold haha

The day after you put in mortar, spritz it with water 2-3 days. It hardens it so it won't crumble. Husband is a retired brick/ stone man.

We thought about attic ladders too, but haven’t found a kit that would work, since we’re going higher than they usually go.. we’re still on the lookout!
