Couple leaves the city to move into a tiny log cabin in the middle of nowhere

  • Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot.
After two and a half years of building, the cabin is finally in a state that we can live in; it has rainwater collection, clean running water, a compost toilet, a bath, a kitchen, a wood stove, and solar power. So we finally made the leap and gave up our city apartment. This is now where we live full time! Subscribe to follow our journey!

My wife and I did something similar in South Africa, we built a bush camp in the Kalahari on 400 hectares and kept game animals, we stayed there for 13 years with our horses ,dogs and land Rovers living close to nature. A fantastic experience to build your own house in the middle of nowhere with your own hands and feel all the rainy seasons ,fires, droughts, young animals and amazing sunsets. A definite highlight period of our lives.
    Have fun.

Hello you two, I have followed your house construction from the beginning and I am happy with you that it turned out so great. I look forward to the next video. For us Europeans, 93 hectares of land is unimaginable. Continued success and fun!

93 acres is not the same as 93 hectares. It is much less. Still a large piece of land.

Congratulations on moving into your cabin in the forest. I can imagine what a great feeling of accomplishment you must feel.
It will bet interesting to see what changes, upgrades, additions, and so-on you will want to make after you have been in the cabin for a while. Meanwhile, enjoy the environment you have with your new home. Best regards.

So happy for you two to finally move into your new home. Hope the wildfires are not close to your property. The magnetic screen closers are perfect for your porch to keep down the bugs. It looks so nice and peaceful there. Congratulations on your new adventures.

Thanks, Cathy !! The wildfires are far enough that they’re not worrying, thank God!
And yes, those magnetic doors are so handy!!

*congratulations!* I have a couple suggestions for the future:
    - remove any trees that are likely to fall on your house in a bigger storm
    - clear a path for vehicles. your van will be safer close by, and if an ambulance is needed, they can go directly to the cabin
    - build a garage/storage shed
    - have non-spoiling fuel on hand just in case it's needed for the van or a generator
    - perhaps satellite internet?

Here in England we don't have to worry much about Mosquitos' or forest fires. Thoroughly enjoyed watching the build. I live in Doublesprings Alabama, in the southern part out America just above Florida. I was born in the big city of Birmingham Alabama, but now I live about 70 miles north of that. The town is small, but seems to be getting bigger every year. I love the mountains here. It's the foothills of the smokey mountains. William B. Bankhead National Forest surrounds my town. But the thins we may have in common is the heat and the mosquitos. But ticks are a major problem here too. The temperature gets upwards to 100 degrees, but count in the humidity if feels like an oven set at 116 degrees. You sweat sitting in a shade with a fan blowing on you. The air gets so hot you can hardly breath. Hope it's not that bad there. Can't imagine it would, being so far north.. but loved watching you build the cabin. With summers so hot here, it's hard building a doghouse. It'd be good to hear from you. But I won't hold my breath. Just a country boy hillbillies saying have a good life up there. And try to make some muscadine moonshine if you can

I found you two several months ago and just fell in love with you. I binge watched all the cabin build vids until I caught up and have watched ever since. I'm so impressed with how you did it with hand tools and why you did it that way. A couple after my own heart! And now you are reaping the rewards of a LOT of hard work. People are so used to going to the big box store and paying big money for the convenience of ready to build wood. Most people have no idea the work involved in harvesting and preparing your own. I'm so impressed and so happy for you! But most of all, I love how you work so well together, and a great deal of the time without even having to talk. The world, especially young folk, could learn some lessons from you. When you figure it out early on, your life will be much easier. Again, congrats!! I'm interested now to see where you go from here. ❤❤

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thank you so much!! We definitely learned so much through this process and we will never take so many things for granted now that we know how much work goes into every steps of surviving and thriving on our land. We still have so much to learn, it’s gonna be a lifetime adventure!
Thank you, as always, for your kind words and encouragement :) hope all is good on your end too!

Congratulations to both of you! Your ability to build your beautiful cabin and have a simple life is what my grandparents strived for in the Adirondack of NYS. Will you be in contact with the outside world? Will you still be working? I don't think you will ever get bored there is too much wood to get.

    •  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

You are very lucky to have witness it from older generations! Did they have any foraging knowledge ? Did they lived fully off grid?
And we will be in contact with the outside world, because we have friends and family that we want to see and spend time with, so every once in a while we will be leaving and going back to the city. We also need the library to upload our videos!
And indeed, i don’t know how we could get bored.. we have an almost infinite list of projects to start on this land ahaha

Nice one, I'm sure that if you just keep doing the quality videos like always, the subscribers will come. Your skills as movie makers have really come along well. Not that I'm an expert, I just know when I am enjoying a video. I really liked seeing the two of you in this one, together and without the tons of clothing that you usually have to wear. You are a very handsome couple with fit, healthy bodies and people like that. We all like to watch pretty people living out their lives. Isn't that what watching movies and movie stars is all about? The cabin looks better and better with almost every video, I hope this particular video reaches tons of people for you. I really look forward to your videos so thanks!

How close are the forest fires to your cabin? It would be terrible to lose it after all your work.

Luckily, we’re pretty far and have been getting almost nothing but rain in the last few days, so we’re fine! We just got some bad air quality for a couple days, but nothing close to what NY got..

Everything you did is good but the mosquitoes seems to be the biggest challenge

Yes they're quite bad at this time of year. But they slowly disappear over the summer, and don't come back until next may!

Congratulations, but forest fires are a real thing, you need to clear out the trees away from your cabin in all directions a good 100m and clean up any ground debris ASAP, our ancestors always cleared the area to promote safety from fires getting to their homesteads
