Building A Log Cabin | Ep. 63 | We bought a power tool... Greywater Drainage + Window Trim

  • In this episode, fall colors are in full swing! The forest is so beautiful this time of year. We start by removing the bug screens form the porch; we won't be needing them until next spring! We then dig a greywater drainage pit. This pit will drain the water form our shower into the earth. We then build another dresser for the 2nd floor mezzanine and a shelf for more storage up there. We finish the mortar chinking on the interior of the cabin and can finally put nice trim around the ground floor windows. We also finally gave in and purchased an electric chainsaw... We felt that we had no other choice if we wanted to harvest enough firewood for this winter.
Welcome to our channel! This Log Cabin Project is a dream that we have had for several years that we finally decided to make a reality. Our goal is to build a tiny log cabin from scratch using as much material from our land as possible. We are building it entirely using hand tools (no chainsaw!). This cabin will function fully off-grid and will be only accessible by foot. Subscribe to follow our journey!
We are learning a lot as we are doing (as always), so don't hesitate if you have any questions, it will be a pleasure to share tips and tricks, if possible.

I am 71 years old. My grandfather and his dad built my grandfathers first log cabin for him and my grandmother. If they had had access to power tools or could have afforded them, they certainly would have used them. Their way was using whatever was available to them at the time. You have access so it's not cheating at all. I am amazed at the quality of workmanship you two have accomplished in your home. Those will be memories you'll have forever.

I’m certainly not disappointed that you’re using a chainsaw. I can’t believe what you’ve accomplished being 99% power tool free! I admire what you’ve done and you have every reason to be proud of your immense accomplishments.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed watching You 2 build that cabin. The only thing that I don't like is watching footage over and over again in different videos that I've already seen. I am learning so much and enjoying your videos so tremendously. I have watched for 2 days and I have been so in all of you two working together like you do. I am 71 years old. When I was 17 I married and my husband and I work together side by side until he died.😊 It was a nice reminder of seeing how 2 months could almost pick up where the other one left off❤.

I don't personally worry about you using power tools or not and I think you've been very thoughtful about the addition to your toolset. I do admire what amazing work you've done to this point and will most certainly continue to do with your hand tools, and I think giving yourself the capability now for your heat is a smart choice.

Hi Nick and Maela, I'm not disappointed in you two at all. You guys made a very sensible and useful purchase to help you get ready for winter👍👍 Anyone who says differently doesn't know what they are talking about. I admire you both❤❤ You work so hard and so well together. Your cabin is gorgeous. I do worry about the depth of your drainage pipe for your shower. It doesn't look quite deep enough. I sure hope it doesn't freeze. The fall colors are absolutely wonderful!!!!😮😮 I'm from Wisconsin, USA and ours are usually pretty also but this year not so much, at least where we live. We had drought conditions this year. Well I've written a book, sooo sorry. Take care, stay safe, and be happy. Sending hugs🤗🤗😊💙💜💚

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks Judy! No need to apologize, we love hearing what our viewers have to say! We're hoping the pipe is deep enough. And it doesnt show in the video but it has a decent slope to it,so we're hoping the water will drain before it has time to freeze. We'll fix it next year if we need to. And we feel like the fall colours here weren't as colourful as usual either

It's not like you are doing some big cheat as the tiny little saw you bought fits right in with your motif in my opinion. I'm so excited to see the bright fall colors. Saw a few this episode which makes me excited to see the blaze of color. Nice job on the window finishing.

I worry your greywater line is not deep enough for winter... especially where you live. Not a fun thing to have your dirty water backing up in the cabin due to frozen blockage. Please look into the ground freeze depth for your area.

It doesn’t show in the video, but the pipe does have a good inclination to it, so we’re hoping the water will drain before it freeze. If not, we’ll indeed have a not so fun time ahah. We’ll have to fix it up in the spring, worst case scenario!

Ahhh! You two have worked SOOOO hard on this project. You know, I can’t get away from the idea that all this labor serves s cement that will hold the personal bond between you forever. I do wonder whether you buried that gray-water line deep enough. Time, of course, will tell. If you have to invoke the “do-over”, so be it. Also, I don’t begrudge you the electric chainsaw one iota. Its use is actually external to the cabin construction..just merely resource acquisition!

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You've said it all perfectly! It doesnt show in the video, but the pipe has a decent slope to it, so we're hoping it's enough to drain the water before it freezes. Worst case, we fix it next year! And we still get to say we built the cabin without a chainsaw 😁

A small vent tube or two pulling outside air in will help your inside air environment. One close to fireplace, and maybe another upstairs. As your fireplace warms, it will suck fresh air through your vents. A home too tightly sealed tends to reduce oxygen flow.

If you find you have more digging through roots, and rocks a mattock and breaker bar really come in handy for this kind of work.
My grandpa would cut the spruce into 8 foot lengths and crib it up into stacks of alternating layers about 5-6 feet high then after it was seasoned cut it into firewood. He would have 10 to 15 of these stacks in addition to 10 cords of firewood split and stacked near the house. He was from Central Alberta.

It's our favourite time of year! Walking through the forest during fall is soo relaxing! Almost every day we look at our cabin and think what a crazy idea we had 😂. We're so glad people like us and our projects. We will definitely have lots more dreams and projects after this one and will surely bring our viewers along for those!

I would get a large cistern and run a line to your water source. Then connect a pump if uphill. Water is super important!

I just recently discovered your channel and it is so relaxing to watch you two work in harmony. Excellent skills and you guys make it look so easy. Obviously it's not. I'm 66 now but years ago I worked for my dad as a framing carpenter. We have built many homes but it certainly was easier with the materials already milled for the job. Please keep up the excellent work. :)

In an inclosed environment, is important to draw in fresh air as you sleep. Is like the cold air return in a conventional house.

  • @gregorysheumaker1157

You could put a damper on it as well, for extreme cold situations. But fresh air you might want to consider bud!😊

I have been watching for a while and everyone already knows that you two have proven yourself many times over. You deserve a few tools to make your life easier. I would buy a four wheeler and cut a trail for it so you don't have to pack everything you bring in. You two are doing a great job on the cabin.

    • @judyschepp8748

Agree about the four wheeler but they are very expensive!!!!

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

They are indeed expensive and a lot of gaz, maintenance and noise! For now, while we’re still healthy, we don’t mind the 20 minutes walk in nature! It’s actually quite a peaceful hike :)
And thank you very much for your kind words :)

Good for y’all. Loved the purist attitude, but definitely think the small chainsaw was a great idea.

It’s been a life saver! We already got more wood in the last 2 weeks than we did in the last 2 months ahaha

Nick, there's no shame in having to use modern technology to collect your firewood. As you stated, you don't have the time to collect it using primitive means. I am proud of you both because you're doing something that some folks can only dream of. I support you using whatever means necessary in order to do what you're doing. Keep up the good work!

If you build Ram pump, you can pump water to your cabin, they don't use electric either.

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

We had to check that out, never heard of a ram pump! The problem is that we’re uphill from the creek :/ but thank you for the suggestion ! We might do that at the sugar shack, for the garden!

Just because you're young it's okay if you use a power tool I know you wanted to do it all by hand but don't worry yourself out enjoy your new cabin your cabin it's okay to have power tools if no one don't accept that that's too bad you do what you have to do❤❤❤❤

No harm in using power tools, when a tech is available why not to benefit

  • @Heisstrong
    @Heisstrong 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Nick & Maela, no I am not disappointed you have a chainsaw to use! On the contrary, it shows that you have good sense to know that you need one to provide enough wood for your home. You do what you gotta do! Nothing wrong with power tools. Every adult on earth has had grand expectations to aspire too, until life hits you in the face and you modify and adapt to what life has given you. No need for a apology! Your doing great!

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks! Well said. We prefer the simplicity of hand tools, but only if we have the luxury of time to spare. This is a situation where we don't have that luxury, unfortunately
