Back in 1972, I was a student at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. At the time I was heavily involved in the TV production courses. A group of fellow students formed a project in coordination with a St. Louis TV station. We produced a weekly 30-minute show featuring St. Louis area musicians. We taped the show at the SIU studios, and it ran on that station late every Saturday night. One week we really got lucky when the head of our department convinced a touring rock band to come over to our campus and record a 30-minute show with us. The band was Black Oak Arkansas, and their drummer at that time was Tommy Aldridge. The day of the taping I ran one of the studio cameras, but I also helped with lighting the set beforehand. As I was up on a ladder hanging lights, Tommy Aldridge was in the studio kind of "warming up." I didn't know who he was or how respected he would become in the rock community, but I remember thinking just from his "warm-ups" that this guy was a special drummer. Black Oak was the only band that had a national following that we managed to get on that show. But I've always remembered how impressed I was that afternoon by Tommy Aldridge. He really gained his great reputation after leaving Black Oak, so it's cool to know that I saw and listened to him "close-up" in the early days of his career. By the way, the band members of Black Oak Arkansas were cool guys. They treated us like we were "pros" instead of just college students. Great to see Tommy still making it happen since I'm the same age as him. A fun memory from so long ago!

Tommy Aldridge is not only a hard hitting stadium drummer, but he's also one of the last of the "old style" drummers. His drumming is firmly planted in the 70'es and up to the mid 80'es. And that's a GOOD thing. He mastered that style. His pocket, his flare and his quirks are SO perfect for that style of music. I just have to take my hat off and give a gracious bow to this EXCEPTIONAL drummer. Man, what a pleasure to hear him just sing out on the drums. Wow...

Tommy's stick free solo in Black Oak Arkansas from the early 70's has to be seen mate! And a big BOO to Ozzy for disrespecting Kerslake and Daisley! He jaked them out of their royalties for the first two albums. Then he got in a lawsuit with Daisley. Then he started misspelling his name "Daisy" on album cover notes. Then he rerecorded the bass and drum parts for those two albums using other musicians (although Daisley and Kerslake co-wrote the songs!) rereleased the albums, and even had the label recall all the original copies that were on the shelves! I blame Sharon but still... No class!

I was dating his sister at the time and she never even told me about him until the whole band showed up one afternoon, being a lead guitarist in a garage band, I was in awe meeting them because I happened to own an album by them, a double live album. They were really cool and even then you could hear the genius in Tommy's playing that would later come. Great guy!

Important to note that Aldridge didn't play on the original record, but he was playing along here to a live recording he DID play on. Something he talks about in the extended videos (some of the best I've seen on Drumeo) is that Randy Rhoads ASKED him to play even busier live, because as a one-guitar band - especially one where Randy is playing so many fills and lead licks throughout the song - they needed to make up for the lack of a rhythm guitar that was on the record. That couples with everything you said about the different energy you want to bring to a live concert, where everyone's screaming and jumping around (both Ozzy and the audience).

Tommy Aldridge, started drumming with Black Oak Arkansas, has stints with Ozzy, Thin Lizzy, but has spent the majority of his career with Whitesnake and working with David Coverdale. A good section of his Drumeo performance showcased some of the tracks from Whitesnake. He has though only appeared on very few studio albums of their’s considering his time with the band. He joined to tour the 1987 album, but it was Aynsley Dunbar that recorded the drums for the studio recording. He appeared on Slip Of The Tongue and then a big gap until The Purple Album and Flesh & Blood. His drum solo during Crying In The Rain on the Live in the still of the night video (also on TH-cam) is something to behold.

Grandpa works at 10 points. What a reaction! And the sense of rhythm is just super! It is pleasant to bow low at the feet of such a musician and mentally kiss his musical heart!

He's been around since the crack of dawn lol!
First seen Tommy in the late 70s when he drummed for the Pat Travers Band, (still doin' the same solo!!!!) and back then he was an immediate Fav, with his dynamic showmanship! And killer looks, bouncing 'fro, hawk nose, spinnin' sticks, wicked Orge!---then I seen him w Ozzy, once with Randy, once w Jake E. Lee...he's been doin' it All.
This song is an example of upping the tempo when playing live, too.
    ⚡️⚡️⚡️ It Up!
Big time influence w his double kicks, and solos🤘🏼...more peep can comment on his longtime career

I saw him live with Ozzy in the 80's and even with Pat Travers in the later 70's. you can listen to live recordings he made with Black Oak Arkansas back in the early 70's and he was just as hard hitting back then. was one of my biggest infliunces in Double bas drumming. he was one of the first that i saw in the 70's that featured a lot of douible kick work within the beat of a song, not just for endings and solos just mind blower hes been able to keep up that hard-hitting intensity for over 50 yrs.

The look on your face watching him play… priceless!
I saw Tommy live with Ozzy on the Speak of the Devil tour (1981?), right after Randy Rhoads died. It was basically all Black Sabbath tunes with Tommy on drums and Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) on guitar. It was amazing!
Nothing against Bill Ward, but I bought the Speak of the Devil live album before I heard the original Black Sabbath versions. Let’s just say that Tommy did them more than justice. You should check out that live album. It’s incredible! The double bass work on The Wizard is off the charts, especially for the time 👍🏻

So funny watching your reaction to an old guy tearing up the kit to one of the GREATEST songs to ever hit the airwaves! 😂😂😂 Tommy Aldridge is making us all feel ashamed of the dwindling of energy as we get older... He's just unreal!

Aldridge has also played for Black Oak Arkansas & Yngwie Makmsteen, but he's most famous for his time Ozzy & Whitesnake as their longest tenured drummer playing for the band off/on for 30+years

Never saw him with Ozzy, but did see him with whitesnake in 1988 when Vivian Campbell, Rudy sarzo (he is the bass player in this video), Adrian Vandenberg. Lee kerslake recorded this song on blizzard, so although Aldridge isn't credited with the original recording, he still kills it, as with anything he plays

I honestly after watching your channel for a few months think that drummers except for a few(Pert,Moon, Bonham...) are so underrated. I'm not saying all are technical like some othe GOATs of drumming, but yall really have so much to do and I don't think people understand that. I sure didn't!

So glad you got to this. The dude is a lifetime pro stadium drummer. He can't not perform when he plays.
Also, if you see him play a live solo, he plays the same licks bare handed without sticks. 🤣
