What's It Like Drumming For Ozzy Osbourne & Whitesnake? | Tommy Aldridge

  • Tommy Aldridge is larger than life - and it's not just because of his insane showmanship or epic hair.
    His huge stage presence and punishing drumming have supported Whitesnake, Ozzy Osbourne, Gary Moore, Pat Travers, Black Oak Arkansas, and more. Rockstars have handpicked Tommy over the years for his groundbreaking, now-classic drum sound.
    He was playing double bass runs before it was cool, and he's proudly worn his heavy metal badge before many of us were born.
    In this hour-long lesson, you'll get breakdowns on key Whitesnake and Ozzy fills, find out what it was like working with Randy Rhoads ("You couldn't make it heavy enough for Randy"), and watch the Bonham fan perform some of his favorite tunes.

      One thing I want to know is, who played on bark at the moon, some people say Carmine Appice did, some say it's Aldridge. I never been able to know without a doubt who it was. Maybe you guys know something about it. Thanks.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tommy played on it. But Ozzy supposedly thought he did to much double bass drumming and to busy with the fills. So they did some cutting on his drum tracks. Tommy find out and got mad and they fired him. Carmine stepped in and started the tour then he got fired and Tommy came back on the tour . I have heard dont take it as truth :)

    • @pascaldeslongchampsmoncton1490
      @pascaldeslongchampsmoncton1490 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ yeah, thanks. I heard a few stories too, from, Ozzy wasn't happy with Tommy,s playing, to Tommy recorded the album, left, and then they ask Carmine to redo everything. Carmine said in an interview, that he redid, some stuff, but never specified what, like Tommy would have left the band, and the drums were not all finish. But nobody is able to come with a concrete answer, it's frustrating not knowing. LoL. Thanks for your reply.

      Spoken like someone afraid of playing to a click. They’re both important, and until a drummer proves they can keep real time, easy on the green light to ignore the click. Bonham and Ringo are two examples of the few “musical drummers” and then there’s everyone else that somehow “are musical” and also “keep time.” Rarely are the two not tied together.

In one interview, he actually said that for the solo to Crazy Train, that he "wrote the pattern" that Randy solos over...really Bob??...really??? ..you actually wrote those same 3 chords ??..wow, how stunning, Bob. Gotta love Tommy Aldridge.
    He's never changed. He even looks the same on the back of Pat Travers vinyls I have at home.
    One of my all-time drum heroes.

    My favorite thing about Tommy is how humble he is and how much he pays respects to everyone he has the chance to work with. It trips me out that he doesn’t see himself as one of the greatest drummers and musicians of all time. The greatest people typically aren’t able to recognize their own genius. Maybe it’s because it all just comes so naturally to him that he doesn’t feel like he’s trying. It all just makes so much sense to him that he has a hard time seeing how it doesn’t just come to the next person the same way it does him. I take him as the kind of guy who learns everything about the things he is interested in. He just has the type of mind to compose great music. And to be fair he has played with all of the greats, some of the greatest musicians of all time. I would imagine that in itself is very humbling.

    I always appreciated how drummers like Tommy “hit” the Drums. As a Bass player it gives lots of accent places to bring some power/punch when needed. Where a more balanced/even playing will make my playing stand out too much as I usually play very hard with fingers or pick. Fucking killer drummer, great artist, and good dude.
