Jeremy Clarkson takes a look at the Nissan Skyline R33 GTR before they were officially imported into the U.K. Taken from a mid 1996 edition of Top Gear.
Idc what anyone says, Clarkson had the most envious career of all time. Decades and decades of playtime. Must be nice. Old school Top Gear was the best car show ever. Nothing will ever come close.

Clarkson was ahead of his time thinking Nissan should have brought the GT-R over. Considering the huge success the R35 was when they finally brought it over you can't help wondering how many other cars that boring accountant types like Mr Ward here prevented Nissan or other JDM manufacturers from bringing over.
It was more about the MILLIONS Japanese manufacturers would have spent make them within safety and emissions regulation. After it was all said and done, the Acura version of the NSX was less powerful, heavier, and about 15-25% more expensive.
They did! Nissan (or one of the large dealerships) did import some late R33's and converted them to UK spec and then they brought over the R34's and did the same. There are (or were) a few rare UK spec ones knocking about with MPH speedo, 155mph limiter etc
@@davidmurren4644 You're right of course, there was often a grey import scheme for enthusiast models. two things that havent aged well on the F355, the steerings over assisted and the magnesium valves need to be redone and changed for something more stable, and have the recall with the fuel line done, which was a result of people cheapening out on the proper way to do engine outs and apparently people say its slow, the R33, just get it reupholstered in good new leather and foam and your fine
It's slow because the engine delivers 50hp less to the ground than what Ferrari claims even when new. And the whole interior looks dated. Still the 40v engine sounds absolutely heavenly.
@@Dimension2010 well that fits with tyler hoovers car, he had a 348 and it was only putting out about 275 horses, one of the early TS models so if you think about that, that explains why in period they were like, OH ITS SO MUCH BETTER, a 75 horsepower increase, that's marketed up to be 115 and his car mechanic had a 308 with a dicky cam in it, an early pre QV car and its putting out 177 horses about the same as my old 5 cylinder from 12 years ago, and that was a 2.5 and it rev'd to about 6 or 7 grand too, like my old 5 banger basically offered me 12 years of reliable service, with the same performance and figures as a ferrari 308 just in a much larger package although if the weight figures are true, it might have been a 1 to 1 lol and my car had metal bumpers lol

The thumbnail has huge Bob Ross vibes 😂
I see this , then immediately need to watch Clarksons island
Nissan missed out on so much revenue by not importing the R32, 33, and 34 to the United States.
V Spec cars are now worth about the same as a mint 355 too!
I'm surprised they didn't demonstrate what it could do on a track - or was that not a segment on old TG (?)
Luv my R33 GTR Godzilla. JDM ✌️ 🤘 🇦🇺
“Every single owner tweaks it up a bit” yep a bit lmao
Godzilla , the king of JDMs
I wonder if Gran Turismo 3 was paying homage to this clip by playing “Are You Gonna Go My Way” as the opening song.
Back when Japan was king. The 80’s and 90’s is when Japan was on top. Cars, anime, hifi systems.
390HP Is Terminator category HP! And this was back in 93'?! 😮
R33 Vspec GTR and Lenny Kravitz playing GREAT MIX
When Jezza finally becomes Prime Minister the Skyline will finally roar around these isles with Nissan's endorsement!
I love that they're using the Lenny Kravitz track gave me gt flashbacks
THIS and the Nissan GTR are my favourite ’Street Cars’ in its day destroyed a lot of high end super cars on performance
Old but gold😢
Does anyone else remember watching this episode on TV?
Yes
"We'd have to change the instruments."
So, you mean, you'd have to print a different speedo face with a MPH scale, make the odo record miles, and adjust the speedo ratio to account for removing the Japanese speed restrictor. Shock horror. They could probably have lifted another speedo mechanism from a UK spec Nissan, put a new MPH face on it and called it a day.
He also said emissions, yet rich people still to this day use planes and yachts 😆 like Taylor Swift
15 years ago 30k got me one, now it's worth 130k.
My Dream Car..
Same, I cant wait for the day I buy a F355 Berlinetta in rosso maranello
@@proxigenated I'm sure you'll look great in it.
@rosstee Thank you, may you get ahold of your favourite car also
And DECADES later, the world FINALLY got the GT-R
3:10 - Ah! The original 'dab of oppo'!
Thought the same thing! I bought the t-shirt when it was out… wonder where it is now?
he is completely right about Nissan's money spending and its still applicable today, just give us a car Nissan we don't want to see stupid advertising on your ugly juke or boring x-trail
I can't be the only one, who after looking at the thumbnail, thought this was a Bob Ross video right???
What is the name of this beautiful music used
two things that havent aged well on the F355, the steerings over assisted and the magnesium valves need to be redone and changed for something more stable, and have the recall with the fuel line done, which was a result of people cheapening out on the proper way to do engine outs
and apparently people say its slow,
the R33, just get it reupholstered in good new leather and foam and your fine
It's slow because the engine delivers 50hp less to the ground than what Ferrari claims even when new. And the whole interior looks dated. Still the 40v engine sounds absolutely heavenly.
@@Dimension2010 I thought that was the 360?
@@kavinskysmith4094 355 too. A Japanese car program tested it and it only produced 330hp. Also tested were 993 rs and 348, both almost managed 300.
@@Dimension2010 well that fits with tyler hoovers car, he had a 348 and it was only putting out about 275 horses, one of the early TS models
so if you think about that, that explains why in period they were like, OH ITS SO MUCH BETTER, a 75 horsepower increase, that's marketed up to be 115
and his car mechanic had a 308 with a dicky cam in it, an early pre QV car and its putting out 177 horses
about the same as my old 5 cylinder from 12 years ago, and that was a 2.5
and it rev'd to about 6 or 7 grand too, like my old 5 banger basically offered me 12 years of reliable service, with the same performance and figures as a ferrari 308 just in a much larger package
although if the weight figures are true, it might have been a 1 to 1 lol
and my car had metal bumpers lol
Back at that time I went for a business meal, and the subject of dream cars came up.
I said a Nissan Skyline.
They looked at me and said your dream car is a Nissan…..they obviously had no idea what it actually was, but obviously thought I was an A hole😂😂
And I actually nearly got one as well but went down the Evo route instead.
Any chance you've got clarksons review on the renault megane coupe from 1995-1996
One of my favourite cars uve ever owned and one of my biggest mistakes at the time of owning it I had a 850 T5r manual and a fiat coupe 20v turbo so 3 amazing cars. Unfortunately the skyline was my vehicle of choice when i was off my face on ketamine and god knows what else. Obviously resulting in me writing it off. It wasn't that bad and was easily fixed but I just parked it on the drive of my ex partners mums. Eventually selling it for £150 yep. One hundred and fifty frigging pounds.
hope you had a good night with the 150 quid at least
@sailor81 probably not lol however the way I look at it someone else will have been over the moon 😅 I did see it come up for sale around 3 years ago and it had been repaired but rear end still had the marks and broken back light and it had beeb stood in a garage for years. It was fairly cheap so I got the funds together but someone beat me to it. Around a week after that it was back up for sale for much more and the new owner looked to have only washed it.
And McClaren needed to make a 1 million dollar supercar to beat it on a track.
I seriously thought the thumbnail was a Bob Ross one
Imagine saying the RB26 is "nothing to write home about".
