      What about the diesel powered Audi LeMans cars?

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 8 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Well, the mainstream opinion against the diesel is the "clatter" sound. Sure, the gasoline engine seem to be more sophisticated and quiet. However, gasoline engines are less energy efficient than diesel engine. For instance, a standard model Bugatti Veyron engine produces 3000 hp, but 2/3rd of it goes out in wasted unused heat, and "only" 1000hp goes to pavement. Sure, 1000hp is well enough, but think of the energy that is being wasted. You could probably heat several family homes for one quick stint in a Veyron. That's why in marine engines, locomotives, big trucks diesel is used, because I think it has about 60% efficiency. For comparison, steam engine would be around 10% efficiency, gasoline engine is about 30%, then you have the diesel, then I believe you have the electric engines. What I would actually like to see is to have a diesel electric car. Diesel electric locomotives have been around since late '30s in U.K. They got the concept right to this day. I believe, before going fully electric with cars, a diesel-electric should be a natural progression. You'd have efficiency, range, and would not depend on connecting wires to your car. Also, if there were diesel-electric-battery hybrid, you could use dynamic breaking to use your wheels as energy generators to feed the resistors to make the electric motors slow down your car, or feed the energy to charge the battery. Sure, all these hybrid technologies sound expensive and complex to implement. But when done in big numbers, it could be well feasible. For fun though, give me a gasoline powered Honda S660, with rear-engine, rear-wheel drive, 6-speed manual stick shift transmission, and no annoying touchscreens in the center of the dash. What a wonderful car. Japanese don't export the Kei cars though, which is sad, because we end up with a total embarrassment: the Smart.

    It makes you realise that Clarkson is a canny journalist playing to a market. He's not the idiot he often appears to be, he's just good at playing one.
    Diesels have become popular partly because they've improved and partly because fuel costs have gone up so much in nearly quarter of a century. He got wrong thing slightly wrong - It isn't actually necessary for diesel fuel to be cheaper to buy than petrol - it just requires that diesels do more to the gallon and - provided you do the extra miles to exceed the purchase price of the car - the diesel will work out cheaper. Diesels are now pretty much mandatory for company cars for this reason. Interestingly enough, though, a lot of Taxis are now the (Petrol) Prius Hybrid.

    Arguing about diesel and petrol is like arguing about tea and coffee. While tea is made from leaves, coffee is made from beans. And tea is an infusion. Coffee is of course the diesel of hot beverages, in the same way that petrol is the tea of fuels. You can't run a car on either tea or coffee, and drinking petrol or diesel would make you very poorly indeed. It is also interesting that there was a car called a bean at the turn of the 20th century, and of course we must not forget the Ford model T. It is also significant that you hardly ever see a diesel motorbike, and most bikers favour tea over coffee. Except Lambretta owners.

For those who aren't aware, a couple of years ago Volkswagen got caught fiddling their test results on their own diesel cars which showed the emissions were far higher than they had reported, and as a consquence the company has paid hundreds of millions of pounds in fines (checking with a quick Google, it might actually be far more than that). Incidentally, despite not owning or particularly liking cars, I find the old proper Top Gear show much more interesting than what it became in the 21st century.
