I have rebuilt several FWB 124's using ARH Soft and Full power kits, some guns do better with Soft kits and some do fine with full power kits depending on build date, I have two of these wonderful guns, both had the same issue with piston seal disintegrated and pieces pounded up into the end of compression tube and several pellets stuck in barrel. Used brass jag on end of cleaning rod to pick out pieces from compression tube, I also used a Sunnen hone to clean up and make uniform compression tube. The soft kit loves JSB Exact 7.87 and settled in @ 770 FPS, very easy to cock and shoot and extremely accurate. The HP kitted gun is exactly 100 FPS faster and just as accurate but I find myself reaching for the soft tuned 124 the most. I have several PCP's and Beeman HW springers and these are by far the most accurate springers I own not pellet fussy at all. Bless you for re doing the video all over again.

I inherited my brothers rifle after he passed and it needs some TLC. Your presentation of the repair, and return to a working spring rifle, back to the living was super. Hope I can get it back to shooting just like you did. Your repair sequence of the step by step will really help. Thank you so much for taking the time to do a nice presentation of the repair. Great tutorial - I've been waiting for someone to enough details to convince me I could tackle the project myself vs. shipping the gun off. Had it all apart in about 15 minutes using my HF hydraulic press and wooden blocks to protect the metal. New seal should arrive on Sunday. Hope to be back to plinking by mid-afternoon after not having shot the gun in over 15 years!

Hey I am new to watching your videos. From some of the commentaries I figured your name is Kevin? Mine is JT. I have a FWB 124 sub 5k serial no. I bought it in the late seventies. I overhauled it about 20-25? years ago. New spring and the piston seal that was crumbled. I just bought another kit from Air rifle headquarters. Just like you did I chose the slightly softer one. I'll be doing the overhaul probably in October. Thanks for the review of what I have to do to disassemble it an overhaul it again.

Hello, YT is really great. I have spent my life having to do deep research on subjects like this. Now I just flip on the laptop! I bought my Feinwerkbau Sport 124, Ser#39542 in the late seventies new. It was imported by Beeman and I bought the 2.5 x 32mm Beeman Mod. 50 Scope. I also bought 10K rds of Beeman Silver Jet .177 pellets in a brick at the time. I shot about half that number and then in the mid eighties I set it aside. I recently got the urge to trot it out again and took a few shots with it. Thinking I would get into seriously shooting it again I bought a can of Crossman Premier 10.5 gr pellets. To my surprise they would not chamber at all! Thinking they might have a bit more oomph than my Silver Jet I had surmised that maybe pellet construction had improved. Seems to not be so. Then I shot a few of my Silver Jets when the gun began to misfire leaving the pellet in the chamber after the spring released with a hollow "twang" sound. On YT watching your show (which had the best video on tear down of the 124 of the several that I watched.), I believe it is time to rebuild as the gun has never been apart in the forty some years since I bought it and has probably lost a piston seal (didn't know they would dissolve with time.) and could probably use a new spring as well (even though I was religious about storing it uncocked). So, You mention ARH as a source of kits and I didn't see a contact beneath your video? You also mention a method of decocking without shooting. Something I have not been aware of but would be a handy feature. However you did not elaborate on just how to accomplish this. Can you tell me how and also how to order from this ARH? Thanks. Subscribing now.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Douglas!
      Here's a link to ARH...
      www.airrifleheadquarters.com/page/page/251327.htm
To uncock your 124, simply hold the barrel in the fully cocked ( downward until it bottoms out) position and disengage the safety. Now, while keeping a firm grip on the barrel, pull the trigger and slowly release the tension on the mainspring by allowing the barrel to move (slowly) back up to the closed position.
Obviously, if you don't restrain the barrel, it'll slam home and cause severe damage to the gun. Hope this was helpful and thanks so much for your subscription.

Thats a very handy spring compressor. And another excellent video. Having watched (as a reference) all your videos ,my next purchase will be a GunSmith screwdriver set. Having bought new bolts , Pivot pins because they look ugly after using too thin or not wide enough screwdrivers , wrong tools. It makes all the difference. Cant stand it when you fixed a rifle and blueing and parts messed up. The eye also wants something I guess or I am being a perfectionist.😁

PS: Just after (matter of months) that I bought my 124 which I believe was a 900 fps gun they came out with the 1200+ versions. Where do they stand today? They don't have the weight in .177 but they were getting well up into the .22 rimfire short and long velocities. I was drawn to the air rifles when I read of their use in WWII resistance movements. Seemed to be a different animal than my Daisy Rough Rider of childhood! Then I learned of their use by the Lewis and Clark expedition as a very serious weapon and in 50 caliber as well!!!

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

"Where do they stand today?" Spring piston airguns like the ones that I mainly focus on on this channel, kind of limit out at around 1,000 ft per second with lead pellets. Sure, there are a few that produce as much as 30 foot pounds of energy but with spring guns you're better off sticking to 15 ft lb or less in my opinion in order to maintain shooting comfort with a gun that isn't so harsh that it's unpleasant to fire.
The more modern PCP air guns are capable of far greater velocities and muzzle energies. That's why a lot of people are going that route. So it depends what you're after I suppose. If you're looking for raw power you should look into PCP rifles and if you're looking for the convenience of a spring power plant you can't go wrong with Feinwerkbau or Weihrauch when quality is your main concern. However, should you decide to buy a new Feinwerkbau Sport ( Assuming that you can find one), you'll definitely want to send it off to a reputable tuner to get it to behave.

@@razor1962 Thanks for the info. Don't quite know what all the talk about recoil is with air rifles. I don't find it even noticeable but I have logged a bit of time behind large center fire magnum firearms in my decades of shooting where the discussion becomes relevant. For my purposes I like the weight as well of the heavier models for muscle training as they are similar to the centerfield. As I am now well into my seventies I can use all the steadiness I can get for offhand work!! The price of shooting pellets is an attraction as well as the ease of setting up a target gallery most anywhere. Nothing beats trigger time for placing your shots. Thanks for bringing me up to speed. I have a rebuild kit on the way for my 124 and am considering an HW50 for a backup. Take care. Doug

The disintegration of the piston seal is what happened to mine too. If you have an older one it might be worth opening it up and replacing the seal anyway. Can't fault kevins strip down but I always tie the safety bar and spring to the block as I decompress the spring, this is one thing less to worry about when sliding it all back in the tube.

Hi! They're two very different rifles. Both are very well made. There were some issues with the new Sport that should've been worked out before it left the factory. Evidently, there's a problem with some of the rifle's safety catches that causes them to engage when the rifle is fired. Add that to the issues that I had with my gun and you'll be surprised to hear that I believe that the new Sport is a better designed rifle. It just needed to have better quality control. Still, the old 124/127s were wonderful guns in their day and continue to be today.

      Thanks Holmer,
So glad to hear that you installed a tune kit in your FWB 124. I experienced many low powered shots before my piston seal broke in. It was a very tight fit on installation. I'll bet you're experiencing something similar.
As far as scopes go, my personal favorite for value without breaking the bank is Hawke. Their Airmax line is my go to brand. Personally, I prefer the 4-12 X 40mm. The crosshairs are precise and they seem to be holding up well. If your budget is limited, I've had good luck with the "Hammers" 3-9 X 32mm. It's a decent scope that comes with a decent mount for under $100
      Hope this helps.

Won’t that make the trigger “slippery” and prone to misfiring due to slip? Seems I am constantly reading/watching other gun builds where this is expressly noted as a no-no. Something different about the 124 that makes this a good idea?

Hi James, I've never read that lubing the piston rod hook is a no-no. I don't believe that it will cause an unsafe situation. The mechanics that lock the sear up are pretty solid. Lubing the contact points should help to eliminate any creep in the trigger.
Back in the Beeman days, their catalog sold moly grease and warned against using it on trigger components but I think that they were just hyping up the product. Never had any issues lubing this area in any springer.
      Thanks for watching James!

@@razor1962 thanks Kevin, I do recall those Beeman explanations. Good to know this is safe, especially on the 124 with its “just ok” trigger. Also been wondering is whether there’s any way other than heavy tar to quiet down the 124. Appears there’s no room for a piston sleeve, and I guess the rear spring guide can’t be modified or changed since it’s part of the trigger block. Doesn’t leave many options…

      @@jameskirkpatrick361 Hi James,
Air rifle headquarters (ARH) sells many items for the FWB124. They offer tune kits like the one that I installed in the video. Although I used tar, it probably isn't necessary as the kit should quiet the rifle down considerably.

@@razor1962 thanks Kevin, have the Pro-Max kit in-hand, also a few other rifles with ARH parts. With other rifles such as HW, the keys to reducing twang seem to be a tight fitting rear guide (and top hat if applicable) and a piston sleeve - for example your HW80 rebuild. Only the top hat (supplied in the ARH kit) is applicable to the 124 it seems, unless JM’s Pro-Mac spring happens to coil tightly around my particular trigger guard. Both my FWB 124’s are currently shooting 870fps with 7g, and 775fps with 8.2g. Both were tuned years ago, but both still have a pretty harsh shot cycle and some twang. I’m going to stuff the Pro-Mac kit in one, for comparison, and will likely skip the heavy tar (at least initially).

@@jameskirkpatrick361 Sounds like a good plan. I'd be surprised if the twang isn't all but gone after your install.
The Macarri kit also has a bearing washer that sits over the spring guide. Whether or not it helps to eliminate noise is beyond me but it puts a little more preload on the mainspring and supplies a nice smooth surface for spring rotation.
With the "Soft Kit" installed, I'm getting about 10 ft lbs averaging right around 754 fps using 7.9 gr Crosman Premier HPs after breaking in the very tight piston seal.
Let me know how your project goes.
      Thanks again!

Sir I have tried to find a breech seal for my FWB 124 Sport for the last year or more with no luck. Can you help? My 124 is an early model Ser # 2811. I would love to get to shoot it. I have tried many 'O' rings from various places and all have been too small or so large the breech will not close properly. Somewhere there must be the correct seal? Thank you in advance.... HI Alicia,
I recently ordered parts for my 124 from these guys. I'm pretty sure they can help you with a breach seal.

Kevin, came across your TH-cam channel while looking for info on my 124. When I cock it, the lever doesn’t engage.
I also have a 300S that needs resealed. Also, two or three of the Winchester 353/363 pistols that need resealed. Can you do this work for me?

I'm sorry Joe but I can't perform that service for you. Perhaps one of the commentors will have a suggestion as to where you might be able to get those guns running again.
