    The cocking noise was the reason I never bought a Feinwerkbau air rifle and always stuck to Weihrauch, that is a disgrace for a high price and alledged high quality German product. The turn around with cutting the spring, the sleeve, guide tube and piston head is a revelation. The lack of recoil and noise is amazing and goes to show how far a little fettling can transform a gun. 10/10.

      @razor1962  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      In all fairness, I have heard from other folks who purchased the Sport that did not experience any cocking noise. They do seem to all have a pronounced spring twang. For some, that's a non-issue, but for me, it's not something that I can tolerate.
      Thanks for watching, my friend.

    Nice tune up.
    They really can be do much more than stock issue. I tuned my hw99 and it's like butter. Especially deburred all surfaces and buttoned the piston. Polished trigger. Luscious

    FWB hadn't even considered the UK 12ftlb market.
    The new 'Sport' with its 30mm bore and large stroke is just too big. The earlier 124/127 were perfectly proportioned which made them a firm favourite throughout Europe and the States.
    Having said that I do like the new 'Sport' open sights stock pattern and the new trigger is said to be a fine improvement.
    Subscribed.

    Hi Kevin,
    This reminded of a time very much missed time when I would have spent time with my father and he would have been showing me how to do/make something. It wouldn't have been air rifles back then, I wasn't allowed. It would have been something else, fly tying maybe?
    My father was very much like you. He was very laid back. He'd do something properly or not at all and what he produced was genius.
    Utube and you, Kevin have given me the opportunity to live that again.
    That was a fantastic watch. My father left me a mk five or six BSA Meteor, which he had fettled and was good to go.
    Youve inspired me to have a go and try to erase the spring twang in that. While I'm there, I may have go and make my own stock for it, make it really mine. I'll see what time allows and what ideas I come up with.
    Many thanks, Kevin. Another great, enjoyable, interesting, inspiring educational video to watch.
    Best wishes.
    Ps. If I had made such an improvement to an air rifle as you have, I'd be extremely proud. Well done Kevin!

    I’ve learned so much from this vid thankyou. I managed to track down the history of my early 80’s HW80 with unusual cylinder seal ( O-ring seal instead of the usual cylinder seal). It was apparently a custom job for FAC rated rifles carried out by Venom. I made contact with an ex Venom employee who informed me he runs the same system in HW80 running at 30 ft lb with no issues at all. Regards (UK sub)

    You've transformed it! It is now a nice, tuned rifle. In honesty this is how I would have expected to have shot out of the box considering its high price. Having said that every spring-piston air rifle I've ever bought gets the strip, polish and moly treatment and a tight fitting spring guide which removes the twang.
    I believe you did the right thing by lowering the power output as in the real world the difference in 15 ft lbs to 12 in .177 is hardly noticable and is better for accuracy. I'd sooner have a rifle that is accurate and lower powered than a powerhouse that can't hit anything. A nice firing cycle is where it's at. Many thanks.

    Just tearing into my 1982 FWB 124 Sport. Hoping it is a little better in fit and finish than the new one. It would have been nice to see you assembling the gun and how you avoid damaging the safety while compressing the main spring. I am just finishing building a spring compressor for mine. I used a solid scope mount with a 1" id and a piece of stainless 1" tubing (marine railing). Machined and fitted ss slugs for each end with a hole drilled and threaded 1/2" x 13 tpi machined a slotted (for adjustability to other rifles) plate that bolts to the end slug at the end of the plate is a welded nut, again 1/2 x 13tpi into which slips a section of ss all thread with a handle welded to the end (you could just weld a nut on). Using a piece of high density poly to form around the safety so an aluminum pushing plate pushes on it and the threaded rod pushes on a recess in the aluminum to keep it centered. I might add a captured thrust bearing if needed tomorrow. I am replacing my disintegrated original plastic plug and will upgrade with the ARW kit. I am thinking if there is as much slop in the spring guide as you found that I will machine a new one out of stainless and polish it. A thick plastic washer between its head and the spring will dampen any impact as the spring detonates. The gun still has very tight tolerances in the barrel fork and steel washers as well as the pivot bolt so I am hoping for the same quality in the rest of it. Tomorrow will tell the tale. Thanks for the video.

    "Sounds like a sick duck." -HARD CUT. That was hilarious! Charlotte kept asking me what I was laughing at. When you were talking about the spring fitting into the shaft, the word in machining is called a 'slip fit', opposite of that would be a 'press fit' where you would have to press it in with force and you cannot remove it easily. The oil hardening was the right choice in this case for a spring. Nice job with the lathe too!
    Overall, this video was excellent! Levels better than your others. The editing, music, volume control, organization and presentation was spot on!! Very informative, simple and clear. I am really impressed. Such a good job. I like the recurring theme of 'ringing the bell'. And you got it in one take after all of the talking! Not once but three times!! Give us more bloopers!! Honestly can't believe how good this was!!! Super excited and proud of you!!

    I did the aluminum sleeve, didn't last , also Pop bottle plastic will fail rather quickly, and after that failed I did some more research, and to my surprise, it turns out regardless of how nice and smooth the plastic seems it actually creates more drag. I have since made a steel one from a smooth can,with no ribs. I haven't used peek but I suspect that would be even better. It's a lovely looking air rifle! They could rival any spring airgun if they just finished what they started. Thanks for the video!

      The Sport can be made to be an incredible rifle. If you're willing to put the time into it, it'll reward you with its accuracy and sweet firing cycle. They're no longer being produced from what I've been told. There was a guy selling one new in the box on the AGW classifieds. He was asking $525. That's about $70 off retail.

    Exellent simple tune you did there, i see the trigger looks as simple as the original sport, what piston seal did you use in it? I had a 124 old sport with the maccari mongoose kit in & it cocked like a knife through butter & shot really well. For that price it should have shot as well out of the box your new one though i might add. The old pop bottle piston lube sleeve trick is one i've used for about 30 years too.

      The "new" sport responded exceptionally well to the tune. It's become one the favorites in my collection. It's a pleasure to shoot.
      I bought the piston seal from ARH (Macarri). I haven't been doing the plastic soda bottle trick for as long as you. Perhaps you can give me an idea of the lifespan of the plastic sleeve? No idea how many shots I can hope for before it's ruined.

      @@razor1962 It depends on how tight a fit the spring is in it really, I use a washer inside the sleeve for the spring to rotate on in the bottom of the piston & one on the guide too well greased with moly i've only had one chewed up so far , i grease my springs well too & the sleeve prevents any of the grease getting past the piston head to caused dieselling. when they do fail you'll know as you'll feel it catching when cocking the gun. Some tuners used ptfe sheet for the sleeve but i've found the pop bottles work fine for me . What's the trigger like on your new sport? Hi David,
      This is a completely different rifle than the original 124s and 127s. This one is the "Sport" and sadly, it didn't last too long in the airgun world. It was grossly overpriced at 1st, and the price slowly fell to become more in line with the competition. With somewhat lackluster sales, the rifle was discontinued.
      No, they are not all like mine was. Most of them were pretty quiet, albeit a little buzzy with a harsh recoil. They definitely respond well to a tune.
      Getting back to your 124, now that's a classic. You're correct about the smoothness. I've owned a few over the years. They are delightful guns.

    Hi Kevin,
    Thank you for another great video and lesson. May I ask, please, when the air rifle trigger is pulled and the piston released, does the piston touch/brush the top of the compression chamber or does it just miss? I always presumed it would fall just short.
    Thank you.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ian. The piston does indeed come to a violent stop when it contacts the end of the compression chamber. The resistance that the pellet provides is enough to prese
      rve the life of the piston by limiting the air flow out of the transfer port. For this reason and as you're aware, repeatedly firing without a pellet (dry firing) can cause much damage over time.. The resistance that the pellet provides is enough to protect the rifle from harm.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It was an aftermarket seal, and it was from ARH. He's got a category on the left side of the main page that lists "Piston Seals"
      Click on that, and then it's the very 1st seal listed.
      Fits the piston much tighter, and mine required no fitting.
      Have you got plans to make a spring guide from Delrin or something similar? That's the main component that cancels felt vibration. It must fit tight within the spring. Jim (ARH) might be able to make a custom kit just for that rifle. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he's already got the measurements and made a few by now. Even just a new guide and the original spring would make a big difference, but the length of the original makes for a harsh shot cycle, in my opinion.

      The gun, in my opinion, is oversprung. This makes the firing cycle very harsh. Taking a coil reduced the recoil substantially and reduced toe power output by about 1 lb. Time will tell on the plastic sleeve. So far no issues after 500 shots. Thanks for watching!

      @@razor1962 thanks Kevin, yes only 1 lb reduction, sorry mis-read numbers. Last question - that piston seal popped off so easily, did you do anything to counteract that? You made a point of showing how loose it is, but didn't comment further on any changes. I guess the question is - is that semi-loose piston seal OK as is? Thanks again, I've re-watched this several times, very informative.

      Hi James! I replaced the piston seal with a much tighter fitting replacement from ARH (Jim Macarri). The original was prone to separating from the piston.
      Thanks again my friend.

    When you consider just what a lovely shooting gun the 124 was out of the box, it is really difficult to credit that FWB would present you with such a lemon, particularly at that price point. I would be interested to know how many other shooters have experienced the same disappointing performance, Also it seems to me that power levels rather poor the 124/127 used to produce around 16/17 foot pounds, after all these years I would expect at least 21 ftp's from a company of this stature, smooth shooting to boot. Whats going on FWB you need to up your game or lose your rep.

    Having bought an FWB 124D from the original ARH in 1979 ( serial # 18866) I am amazed that the FWB factory would have turned that rifle loose. Some of the rifle looked good quality, but some was crap. From the price point, sad and embarrassing for a great company.

    I would have sent that back for two reasons.
    1. You have invalidated your warranty
    and
    2. They need to know that their QC has failed you and neither you nor they expect a gun to leave !ike that. If they do, then return it for a refund.
    Frankly having seen the inside I would spend my money on something with better quality internals like an Air Arms Pro Sport.

    What did you do to reduce the breaking effort before cocking?

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The breaking effort is the same. It may be a little less as I greased the bearing surfaces with moly.

      @@razor1962 OK. I have a .177 airgun that is difficult to break. The problem as I see it is that the angle of the barrel catch is wrong, it is to pointy. I already replaced the spring with one with less tension but the problem persists. My next option is to make a new catch with a less pointy end so it moves easier over the retaining bar. Do you think it will work?
      Sorry if my English does not explain it properly, it is not my home language.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@L.V-Rider I'm sorry LV but I don't really know the solution to your problem. I'm not really an airgun-smith. I'm pretty much a novice to the tuning aspect of air gunning. For me the extra effort required to break the barrel is not really an issue and so I just plan on living with it.

    • @L.V-Rider
      @L.V-Rider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@razor1962 I made a new barrel catch with 10mm stainless steel shaft with a less pointy end. I kept the original to have it as example for the future should I need it. I also returned the original spring as the new one is now to soft. Now the breaking effort is is very easy as well as closing the barrel but still hold the barrel firm in place.

    • @razor1962
      @razor1962  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@L.V-Rider Wow! That's a huge project. Was this on the FWB Sport as well? I find that on the Sport, even though it's difficult to break the barrel open, the barrel closes with ease, requiring not much force at all.
