How Does Money In Splatoon Work?

  • CASH! The currency of Splatoon 1 and 2, officially named G, is very easily obtained by participating in turf wars. Cash is used to purchase different kinds of gear and weapons in game but how much more is there to it? How does it work? Is it the official currency of inkopolis? And are Inklings/Octolings rich because of it ?
NOTES/DISCLAIMERS: I kinda goofed up in the yen to usd exchange rate in most parts of the video LOL oops. To keep it short, I kinda forgot and did NOT pay attention since the exchange rate of Yen to USD went from 0.0086 when I first started working onto the video to the current rate (as of 3/25/2022) to 0.0082. During the exchange rate portions of the video what shows up on the screen changes from 0.0086 to 0.0085 to 0.0084 but in the end good thing most of the amount stays the same.
ALSO my PPPPPOP filter decided to just DIE on me I guess

When it comes to the meal ticket, I also pictured it as a sponsorship - you eat their food before a match to advertise "Hey, I like this food" and the food company matches your next match's earnings as payment; much like on TH-cam where sponsoring snack companies are like "We'll ship you a free box of snacks *and* pay you, if tell your fans you like them."

Inklings actually hate coins/change. It was mentioned in some sort of interview at somepoint. Which both makes sense and contradicts the game. The food and drinks that crusty Sean cells is probably full of energy so that way we can get more abilities and more money so that way the inklings can play better. He also probably resells the tickets if they're in good shape for a pretty high price of what a normal ticket would cost.

They then struck up a deal for him to only accept food tickets (I think he still profits somehow) and food tickets cannot be bought or sold. i think theyre tokens, you perform better in battles you get more tokens, and someone hands it out afterwords. maybe the food comes in containers that have something printed on the inside that you show to said someone. grizzco either got permision to give out tokens or is using a loophole by only have them appear in capsules.

  • @richie2298
    @richie2298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Here's my explanation for the ticket thingy:
Cefalopods can buy food normally with money, but a ticket is different, a ticket is not for the food, but the reward. The food you get is a free bonus. You give Crusty Shawn the ticket and he gives you free food and informs the battle moderating people about the reward so your abilities get boosted or your rewards get better.
It makes sense to me at least, considering they're so rare.

I always assumed that the money we got from turf ward were like donations from the jellyfish. Like, we play turf war for free because it's fun, but it gets broadcast to anyone who wants to watch, and all the jellyfish at home or at work watching can donate if we seem interesting (aka if we're doing good and if our team is doing good).
For the food my thoughts are kinda like,,, so you need a ticket to even get it in the first place, so those shops are kinda exclusive. If you see an inkling eat there you know they're kinda a big name, and so more people are paying attention and they get more donations/more clout, which makes them level up faster and the shopkeepers respect them more. The reason you can get them from grizzco is because Crusty Shaun sells them to people, making it inconvenient for people to obtain and keeping his lines shorter. Mr Grizz realized that Inklings would do almost anything to get them so he hands them out as bonuses sometimes since it's a big draw for potential employees.
Basically inklings are influencers and make money from people giving them superchats and tbh that's just really fitting for Splatoon.
(This is all headcanon and most of it was formulated as I watched this video, I haven't read any of the interviews so if any of this contradicts them please tell me! I'm really interested in this too now.)

by the way, for any of my fellow Australians, cash is basically equivalent to our cents, as it seems quite similar to Yen and each Yen is about 0.011 AUD, so you can theoretically just convert the amount of cash something costs in Splatoon 1 or 2 to Aussie Cents and it’ll be relatively accurate, neato.

I will just post what i think, dont care if someone else happened to think the same (we are 8 billions, there are chances for this to happen): to me it sounds more like turf wars are gladatorial fights, the cash is more of a token reserved to inklings, which will then use as credits to live and buy weapons.
Essentially, it is all an incentive to keep turf wars (which with no doubt are a great source of entertainment) going with always new and always fresh players to join them.
Perhaps the food= double money thing is just a matter of popularity, there was another game where when you did x thing it would've given you some sort of popularity bonus (not pokemon x and y, tho it may be similar).
Maybe cash is just for younger inklings, we know they are a bit dense, so perhaps this is also used to teach them about working to get money and live while measuring themselves. It would actually make sense and be a very effective way to teach them how life works, incentivize learning by using something they love to do (turf wars) as a bait, whilst the worker class gets some entertainment (much like soccer or other sports)

Which would then lead to the question of which stages are closer and which stages are farther? And how much does a train ride cost? If we think of that as their main source of income then that probably means that G is worth at least a little more than Yen considering you can make a living off only 2 hours of turf war per day. I think that Crusty Shawn (or however you spell his name) works with the jellyfish so whenever a inkling buys food he gives the ticket to the jellyfish to transfer into cash which is given back to you as double the money

I like to think that Inkopolis is a post scarcity utopia and the turf wars are just a circular economy. Inklings buy clothes, the clothing companies simply give their money back to the inklings in the form of turf wars, and the clothing companies are sponsored by the government. Turf wars are simply a form of entertainment for the Inklings and Octolings.

You think there some sort species restrictions? For example most inkling/octoling might only there jobs in these battles, however the jellyfish people can’t participate in game but work what we think normal job? Is Grizzco a cheap way to get eggs? Using the cheap and efficient inkling/octoling they can make huge profit with little to no training. All inklings even go to school? Or only rich them? Do they play game to get money to there school?

    Here’s an in universe idea.
Think of the turf wars/ranked modes as a 3 minute airsoft/paintball match, there could be many teams at the various stages at one time.
Think of how you can get the same stage over and over and over again in the 2 hours the stages are in rotation. Perhaps it’s just you/your team staying at the same stage.
On to the time thing, while I’m not going to do the math. Every match is 3 minutes (give or take for ranks overtime) add some down time for point payouts, clean up and what not, you could make a hefty profit from just and hour or two of matches.
Ooor maybe you get payed out when you leave. Tally up all your points, add the win bonuses and show that to the sponsors or whoever’s hosting the match.
I honestly hope we get an in-game explanation on how this all works.

  • @robbietheweirdo

Speaking of sponsoring the matches, do you think Jellyfish gamble on Turf War or Ranked matches? Or maybe it’s illegal there? There has to be laws, since the guns are disabled in the plaza (Although with the Chaos winning, some laws might be removed) If so, There might be underground gambling places.

If there’s a real in universe explanation for why food and drinks give you an increase in cash or exp, it’s probably the idea that food and drinks would give you energy in real life. Thus you’d perform better in battle.

It's a sponsorship deal. That's why the tickets- by using the sponsorship tickets and eating it publicly Crusty gets free advertisement and the Jellyfish flock to his foodtruck while watching Turf Wars and other Splatbattles.

My theory is that the cash earned from turf war is only used for buying gear and weapons for turf war. You can't buy, say like, furniture with it. Maybe a different currency is used for non-battle related goods and services; for inklings/octolings/jellies and whoever that don't participate in turf wars.

WAIT! To explain the double cash thing with Crusty Sean its simple!
Crusty Sean is a major sponsor of TurfWar! like how major YT sponsors are SurfShark VPN, SkillShare, & Raid Shadow Legends!
Crusty Sean sponsors the turf war and as a sponsor bonus anyone who eats his food before a turfwar gets not only the usual output but the jellyfish payout that equal amount! so when you get 1k from the turfwar the jelly's give you an extra 1k as a sponsor deal for eating at Crusty's it makes perfect sense!!!

I assumed that Gs were like crypto currency, in that you have a registered id account, and you have a QR code or something you scan when entering matches, grizz co etc. Based on ranking set by each employer, you earn Gs and those act like money and can be exchanged for clothes etc. Meal tickets wouldwork the same way, except they are physical items and rare, thus can be "sold" for much higher Gs.
