How Do Inklings Deal With Rain?

  • It's well known Inklings and Octolings do NOT go well with water, everything that's known about them has made them not compatible with it at all anymore. Since their bodies are made of Ink, when they touch water Inklings and Octolings go SPLAT. So what would happen with if an Inkling or Octoling wer caught in the middle of rainfall? So have you ever wondered how dangerous is RAIN and how do they DEAL with it?

    I feel like Inklings/Octolings operate under the rule of osmosis. Drinking water or getting drizzled on a bit isn't that bad but if they absorb too much water or are submerged in it, there's more water than ink and they go splat. I feel like the same thing happens with enemy ink, taking 100 damage is at the point that there's more enemy ink than their own and they get splatted due to that.

    My headcanon is that inklings just can’t swim in water because they’ve evolved to swim in ink, which is MUCH thicker than water, meaning that they can’t displace enough water to swim and therefore drown, but that drinking water, showering, bathing, or wading in shallow water is perfectly fine.

      Idk man, don't you see how they go through stuff as if they were liquid? I think that their body is made of somy liquid that can change/transform and as such, water is able to disolve (relaistically, the speed at which they disolve should be different depending on the temperature of the water, and that seem to check out with Splatoon).
      They are definitely made of ink, it seems like even their clothes are, they "swim" on ink by fusing with it and therefore can only swim in ink of their color. So they cannot fuse with water just like they cannot fuse with their opponent's ink.

    • @quasar5563
      @quasar5563 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +38

      @@jestfullgremblim8002 well think about it like this.
      A fish cannot swim through the air. Why? Because the air is not dense enough for their tails and swim bladders to produce sufficient force to keep them moving. On the other hand, birds have no problem flying through the air because they evolved for it. Their wings displace enough air to produce enough upward thrust to fight against gravity. I think the same thing is going on here; the water isn’t dense enough for their jet propulsion to allow them to swim. They swim through ink so well because they evolved to do so.
      On top of this, there are puddles in places like inkopolis square that the inklings can stand in perfectly fine, even when they’re barefoot.
      The animation that plays when you fall into water supports this. They don’t just dissolve, but they flail around like they’re gasping for air.
      I do see your point with the clothes though. I’m not sure how they disappear like that. Hopefully the Side Order DLC could clear some of that up for us.

      Took a year for an ink expert to get here! But the viscosity of ink is almost that of water and application suited, you're thinking of dip pen ink, I think? Which contains shellac and isn't just an ink. The shellac will clog any modern tool so modern ink has the same consistency as water, it needs to go through a fountain pen's feed or a ballpoint's ball without solidifying and ruining the pen. The traditional asian "sumi" ink isn't very thick either although some versions contain enough carbon black to start having a bit of viscosity and cause mechanical problems in modern tools over time it's not nearly as thick as the shellac containing inks.
      This is all aside from the fact squid kid ink has the appearance of tempera paint and doesn't look like ink at all. As an ink expert: It's tempera paint, the binder is a bioprotein like albumin which is actually nothing like shellac. If you want to figure out squidkidink it's more like the stuff inside an egg?

    I'm guessing since Inkopolis is sunny most of the time and they seem to be surrounded by desert, they have a climate that is similar to Nevada. That means it is hot and dry with infrequent rainfall. It also means that when it rains, it pours, but not for very long. So, in the rare occasion where Inklings encounter rain, they just hide inside for a couple minutes while it passes. As far as weather goes, I'd think that tornadoes would be a bigger deal than rain in Inkopolis and The Splatlands.

Also, I noticed in one of the levels (Propellerland) in the Octo Canyon that the screen looks like it has water droplets on it, and apparently the Dutch name for that level translates to "Heavy rain falls in Propellerland" which makes it clear that Inklings can survive a bit of rain.

    I'm pretty new to splatoon so I don't quite have the best understanding of everything, but my takeaway on inklings/octolings so far is:
    they're weakness is disrupting their chemical composition, they're made of ink, so adding too much water, or ink of another color makes it too hard for the ink to hold itself together, resulting in a splat. as a trade-off though, since they're effectively just a water balloon filled with ink, they're highly resistant to physical trauma, hence, they don't take fall damage (it also explains Mr. Grizz's use of ink in splatoon 3's story mode, bear claws wouldn't really hurt an inkling, so he created the fuzzy ooze instead to combat them)

    I've always compared Inklings' (I'll get into Octolings later) relationship with rain and water in general to a normal person who doesn't know how to swim. People usually don't drown from rain, even if it is heavy rain. Also, if they go about waist deep in water, they don't start drowning then either. But when they get around chest or neck deep, they can lose their footing, feel like they can't breathe, or start panicking, all of which could lead to drowning. This is also basically what we see when Inklings go into water. They splash around to keep above water before inksploding and respawning. So no, I don't think rain affects them too much. OCTOLINGS ON THE OTHER HAND, are a bit tougher to place. This is all because of one specific Octoling, DJ Octavio (who I should mention is an Octoling that refuses to transform into his humanoid form). After he's defeated, Octavio is always put in a snow globe filled with presumably water. I do have an explanation for this though, and it has to do with age and ink. Octavio is around the same age as Captain Cuttlefish, who is 120 years old if I remember correctly. We also know that Inklings, and presumably Octolings as well, go though a process called sun-drying. This is when they lose all their ink to preserve their lives. Cuttlefish has already been sun-drying, and if we take the DJ's age into about, Octavio has been too. But why would sun drying completely take away the ability to turn into your squid form? It doesn't seem like it would help you at all in the wilderness (where Inklings used to be at the beginning of the Mollusc Era) because your squid form is essential for escaping and catching prey. So they don't lose their squid form, but instead lose the ink *on* their squid form. And we know that this has happened to Octavio because his octopus form has smooth skin and a clean, non-inky cut on his arm. If he still had ink, the cut would probably look different, or heal altogether. Do you see what I'm getting at? I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't, I'm kind of rambling on about random stuff. But to conclude, Octavio can survive in the water in his snow globe because he has no inky Octo form that causes him to inksplode, and all other Octolings that haven't started sun-drying react the same way to water as the Inklings.

But even if he was a regular Octarian, Octarians also can't go into water. In the some levels in Octo Canyon, you can push Octo Troopers into the water, and they then get splatted. I do like your thinking though, as we can infer that Octarians can go into some liquids, like the Sanitized Octarians floating in some sort of liquid in the descending boxes during one of the escape phases in the Octo Expansion. That could be some sort of transparent ink, as it doesn't look like normal water we see in other parts of Splatoon, but it's just a guess. Good input!

Since in Splatoon 3 (I believe), Marie mentions a connection between inkling skin and water, and inklings are seen struggling to keep their head above water, they don’t die by means of disintegration, but rather they nearly drown, but instead are splatted by an outside mechanism attached to the respawn points that also causes them to be splatted once reaching 100.00 points of damage by ink.

  • @KingTaltia
    @KingTaltia 2 ปีที่แล้ว +564

    Something to think about; Inkling CHILDREN partake in the widespread sport of Turf War. This implies that to the inkling adults the situation isn't too particularly dangerous, many of these stages are surrounded by water (heck, Mahi Mahi Resort literally has a rising and falling water level) and we well know that Inklings keep their memories and such after falling in water. Calie and Marie are known to play Turf War after all. So "Splatting" isn't like "death" in any way.
    Perhaps this is the case; Water isn't lethal to Inklings, it's inconvenient. If their skin is thin and they absorb too much water, what if it just "bloats" them, making them heavy and slow (just like enemy ink does). Perhaps Splatting isn't something automatic; it's something conscious. If Inklings and Octolings can change states into a liquid to turn into ink, who's to say they can't turn into a gas as well? (Again, the story modes SHOW that through kettles they do this, maybe the kettle doesn't LET them turn into a gas, what if it just allows them to move more quickly/with more direction than normally)
    Inklings and Octolings fall in water, becoming bloated and slowed (much akin to enemy ink, which results in the same) they KNOWINGLY splat, because it's faster to turn into a gas, and then a liquid again, than it is to wait it off for the bloating in the middle of a high stakes match of Turf War.
    So; for rain it would be simple; they just get slow and lethargic, it's not "dangerous" it's just a pain, and they can quickly deal with it when the rain stops by splatting and respawning.
    The reason that we hear it's "lethal" or it "kills" ... they're sports players; It's killer TO THE GAME, sure you CAN splat and reconstitute, but it'd be better if you just DIDN'T get stuck in the water/enemy ink to begin with, it's Killing your game.
    That's my hypothesis.

      Splatting is like death. In an interview with the team about Octo Expansion, in the sections where Agent 8 is weaponless and you have to play steathily, the devs confirmed that when Agent 8 is splatted in this area, with no respawn pad, they are dying, and choosing to continue or restart the level is "going back in time", not respawning.

    i think the "they dissolve in water" thing was initially brought into existence just to explain why falling out of bounds in water kills you like falling off the map outright. the most canonical answer i can think of to justify the water weakness is that inkling bodies are primarily oil/ink-based (as opposed to humans being water-based) and their skin is a semi-permeable membrane, so if they get hit with too much water at once or too forcefully it breaks through their skin and forces out the ink until they burst. in this case i'd reckon light rain/drizzle doesnt matter, regular rain is only a problem if theyre out and about for a long time (and why most inklings own a million jackets) and storms with fat heavy raindrops that bust through inkling skin like bullets was the inspiration for the ink storm special
    personally i _really_ struggle to internally justify inklings being this ludicrously weak to water. crusty sean's drink menu is basically nothing but fruit smoothies and coffee. coffee contains water. _fruit_ contains water. do inklings have tear ducts? because every animal that _can_ cry cries saltwater. earth experiences floods, hurricanes, rainstorms, snow, hail, and the surface of the planet _today_ is _70%_ covered in water, almost certainly more in splatoon's time period. evolving to rapidly shapeshift at the cost of dissolving like tide pods in water seems like a pretty catastrophically Bad Move. so im just gonna list out some of my favorite headcanons from random people online
    -inklings aren't permeable, they're just too dense to swim. they can chill out in water just fine, but if theyre thrown into a deep pool they sink like rocks. in turf war, some component of the respawn tech forces a player to teleport back to spawn if they can't breathe (for example, because there's water _or ink_ covering their entire bodies)
    -those little squid/octo souls that float out when someone gets splatted arent just an aesthetic detail; they contain rudimentary organs and consciousness and can regrow into a full body if provided with a large well of ink and a large supply of electricity (hence the respawn pads. could also explain why theyve domesticated zapfish)
    -they're usually totally fine getting dunked in water or swimming around. its just that the only time we see them interact with water is in-game; during turf war or salmon run, where they're shapeshifting from kid to squid to kid to squid _many, many times_ in quick succession. in doing so, their skin gets thinner so it's quicker and more sustainable to shapeshift, but in doing so they become vulnerable to foreign liquid like enemy ink or water. (this could also explain why shooting callie or capn cuttlefish til they're covered in ink doesnt do anything; theyre not in the heat of battle when you interact with them, so theyre just annoyed if anything. agent 3 is a little harder to justify since you can shoot them all you like immediately after battling them...maybe passing out automatically restores the natural texture/thickness of inkling skin? idk)
    -marina's line about water being lethal was a translation error. not nintendo's error, but _marina's._ anyone who's fluent in more than one language could tell you how easy it is to get words or idioms jumbled up in other languages. marina's pretty fluent in inklish, but it's still a second language to her; she is not immune to the occasional brainfart. she might have misinterpreted the inkling phrase "stay hydrated" for an octarian phrase like "drown"

    I think the inklings' relationship with rain is the same as us. It's unpleasant to get soaked in the rain unless you dress for it. Due to the presence of the different gear for different fads or weather, which is the same as what we have, I think they have that gear for the same reason. The effects attached to the gear for ink battles is just another reason they may wear the particular gear.
    As for what happens when they get soaked. Well, I already said it. They get soaked. You already explained that they are fine unless they are fully submerged in water. But if water doesn't bother them anymore than it bothers us, why do they get splatted when covered in enemy ink? Enemy ink is offensive. It explosively tears apart an inkling's membrane if the inkling gets covered with enough of it. Besides marking turf for its corresponding team, that's what it's supposed to do. Water, on the other hand, is neutral. I don't think it hurts them when it splashes on them because standing ankle or knee deep in it doesn't hurt them. Also, so long as the water doesn't get any deeper, the inkling can stand in it indefinitely so it's definitely not being absorbed into them. That's why they can take showers, but probably not baths.
    Finally, what happens if it starts raining on a turf war? Sadly, the game is over, and the result is no contest. The rain washes away the ink on the turf because that ink doesn't have a membrane like the inklings do. Someone may ask, does that mean a wet inkling is more resistant to enemy ink? Ever so slightly that the answer is still pretty much no. The water will quickly become saturated with the ink and then not have an effect on the ink's ability to splat an enemy. So, maybe being wet will block 1 point or less of the 100 points to splat an enemy, which is not a whole lot. The inklings can still splat each other but there's no point since neither side can claim turf in the rain. With that, I conclude my 3 part theory.

      @BlueAmpharos 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      But one of the news casters mentions taking a cold shower. A shower is essentially a heavy rain, is it not? However, baths would be a death sentence, as too much of their body would be submerged in water. It's probably like what happens if we sit in water too long, our skin starts pruning, but showers don't cause this effect. Except in the case with inklings, this happens a lot faster when they're submerged and it's deadly, as if it causes them to burst... which would probably be from osmosis. So showers or a moderately heavy rain would be fine, but probably not a torrential downpour that would be more like a waterfall than a shower, and definitely not baths. Their skin can't repel water of that magnitude.

    We're not sure where we saw it from, but we remember seeing Callie and Marie talking about modeling for swimwear during the Inkopolis News. It could have been the Japanese version of splatoon, but we're unsure.
    Anyway, it would mean that Inklings like to wear swimwear without actually being able to swim, or Inklings can swim in large bodies of water. Assuming the latter, we think that Inklings can be in large bodies of water, but their heavy equipment drags them down causing them to drown. We also believe that as long as the body of water is semi-calm, Inkling and Octoling skin won't break, and they won't be splatted.
    Edit: Now that we think about it, floating is another matter. We think they would sink. Therefore, Inklings and Octolings can't swim, but they can be in the 3 foot section of the pool.
    Transferring that knowledge to rain. As long as their skin doesn't break, they should be fine. However, we could see something like a hurricane or typhoon being near-apocalyptic for the Inklings and Octolings.

    One thing I noticed about the panel at 4:44 where Bobble says she was taking shelter is that Specs proceeds to ask if she’s ok. While that could also just be a case of getting caught in the rain being just generally undesirable like it is for humans, it could also imply that while the amount of rainwater Bobble came into contact with here wasn’t lethal, a larger amount could’ve been. So that could lend more credence to the idea of there being an “upper limit” to how much water inklings can tolerate.

    My thoughts on water to inklings and octolings is that it isn't actually a threat to them in any real way, they're just not well adapted for aquatic life or motion. In game it's a game-play mechanic and water is out of bounds in matched play so when they fall in water, they deform to 'splat' themselves and return to spawn. This persists in the main campaign and salmonids simply for gameplay purpose.

  • @CYBERR0CKS
    @CYBERR0CKS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    My personal theory is that ink storms, water hazards in stages, and rain all cause a different sequence of outcomes.
    Ink Storms only splat inklings/octolings due to the pressure that an enemy ink applies to an inkling/octoling. With regular weapons, damage usually is dealt faster with ink based on the amount of pressure the weapon shoots ink out with once ink covers an inklings/octolings body completely (either by shooting different parts of the body or having the ink just spread when shooting the same spot) to the point where the physical structure of the body just collapses due to the pressure of the enemy ink that presses against their thin skin.
    For the water hazard in stages, inklings cannot swim as they flail their arms in the air trying to gasp for air(?) as they get pulled more and more down by water pressure as they sink. Thats why they can survive being in shallow water like in salmon run or mahi mahi. They swim in ink only in squid form by compressing into the floor via ink since they are made out of ink and have no bones to stop them from just flattening themselves into the floor.
    Rain isn't lethal to an inklings/octolings body, as seen by the manga panel you refer to, bobble isn't in fear or shock from the rain. You can tell how she actually feels in the manga based on how her eyebrows are angled. The rain is just water falling onto on inkling without pressure which means that the octoling will be unaffected.
    I think the conclusion I have is that the inklings/octolings thin skin lead to them having their physical structure to collapse via pressure.

    this is just my personal interpretation, but i feel like inklings with water works mostly off a matter of how sudden the change in osmotic pressure is. being dunked into water is going to break apart their thin skin as their forced to absorb WAY too much water WAY too suddenly, resulting in them being splatted, but slowly sumberging themselves, or just being careful not to overwhelm the ink sac- which is located right by the stomach- when submerging themselves if they must do it suddenly. given that line of thinking, a sudden torrential downpour could probably hurt them, but most other types of rain would just be annoying, or maybe sting a little. with enemy ink, i feel like its similar; different ink colors dont mix, so getting splatted happens when an inklings body cant process and absorb the foreign ink penetrating through the osmotic layer of the skin fast enough, overwhelming the metabolic processes of thr body and causing said layer to break under the pressure. thats just my personal theory on it though!

    I have noticed that if you are playing the Salmon Run and if you paint a part of the stage which then later gets submerged in water during high tide, the ink tends to stay relatively the same and if you were to shoot ink into water it will sink. This made me think that the Inklings'/ Octolings' ink it more dense than water causing it to sink. I also noticed that Inklings/ Octolings tend to almost dissolve in their own in when swimming in it (this can best be seen in you turn into a squid on dry land then swim into your ink) which makes me think that a least some parts of their bodies are made up of their ink. This can be like their blood or is just somewhere in their systems so they can breath like a substitute for water in real squids or as self defense like in real octopuses. Also, because the Inklings/ Octolings spend most of their time in their kid form on land, they'll need to breath oxygen with their lungs as their kid form ( I think they can still breath even when in ink by shifting oxygen out of their mantles [squid gills that are on their head] in their squid form.)
    TLDR, the Inklings/ Octolings are heavier than water so when put into a body of water they'll sink and drown due to lack of oxygen.

    I dunno… I find the thought of Inklings and Octolings just exploding left and right when it rains to be a funny thought.
    But it would be weird to evolve to not handle water… when you live somewhere that rains. So I imagine that they can handle water to a certain degree and certain types of water (like how dirty water can be bad for us) and its just that the Inklings and Octolings possess more sensitive skin compared to ours due to having the ability to change forms and being made of ink.

    I think what causes different ink to splat specific inklings is that inklings, are made of ink colored based on their, well, hair? IDK. But when differently colored ink enters them, it mixes with the already present ink in them essentially eating them from the inside out, and why while not in combat you heal is that your ink fights with the different ink to remove it, like white blood cells and viruses. But when enough foreign ink enters an inkling, as I said it literally eats them from the inside out, causing them to pop!

    I think that the weather forecast would be included in the stage rotation, in a roundabout way. I mean, you have a bunch of different locations scattered throughout the area so fighters can be sent to different areas to avoid the worst of potential rainfall, with two arenas being indoors (the Museum and Ancho-V Games) where outside weather can't affect it just in case. It'd be like "Due to a forecast of heavy rain at Marina Harbor, it will be replaced by Museum D'Alphonsino in the 4 PM map rotation."

  • @penguinmaster7
    @penguinmaster7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +384

    my theory: inklings can deal with water, but ONLY when they're not geared up. why else would there be swimsuits for them?
    those ink tanks on their back are more than likely a simple resevoir where dedicated ink is stored, to prevent an overzealous inkling from using up all of their ink, which is why you can't shoot when your tank is empty; it's a safety measure. Now, how does the tank actually connect to the inkling's ink? via piercing their membrane. there's no visible tube that connects to anything, so the safest and most consistent way to get ink is to go into the inkling's body and draw from there. any ink that the inkling absorbs is transferred to the tank. Since the inkling's ink is very susceptible to opposing ink and is easily overwritten, any ink the inkling gets shot with instead clogs the tank and overfills the inkling to the point where their membrane can't contain it all, resulting in a splat.
    this brings us to why inklings splat in water. because the tank physically penetrates the inkling's skin, water exposure will result in rapid over-pressure as the water, assuming it is more dense than ink, floods the inkling's body. this makes the inkling too heavy to swim, causing them to struggle and dissolve. the inklings get splatted waist deep because that's likely where the tank physically connects, or at least is one of such connections.
    the "water is lethal" rule that gets thrown around is more than likely either an inkling in-joke, or just a reminder to keep inklings from trying to cheat, as a sniper could easily swim out of the map for easy pickings.

  • @1ogic948

    My head-cannon is that inking skin keeps out unwanted liquid most of the time, except for when the liquid is high pressure. So, stepping on enemy ink causes very little damage, but getting hit by a high pressure sniper shot instantly splats them. Wading in water doesn’t do much, but getting neck-deep in the water (and panicking and splashing around it) is enough pressure to breach or flood the skin, causing the inking to go into their splatted “ghost” form as a sort of biological fail safe. Continuing this overcomplicated explanation, my reasoning for why inking skin is semi-permeable like this is that it evolved to allow its own ink in so inkings could produce ink faster in their own ink, however because enemy ink is much closer to their own ink it has a much easier time going through their skin than say water, which is why they have trouble going foot-deep in enemy ink but don’t take damage wading in water.
    In conclusion, rain just bounces off of inklings and by extension octolings unless it is extremely intense, thank you for listening to my Ted Talk.

    As long as the water on the outside of their body doesn't match or exceed the dilute amount of water inside their body they should be okay, when it is more the water would travel from the more concentrated area to the least concentrated area, both bloating them and dissolving their skin.
    Showering would be and exact science and soap would be more lethal than water, whey would need hydrophobic skincare products like antiseptic oils or something.

    on the topic of getting splatted by different color ink: Maybe inkling ink has evolved to be filled with microbial colonies or loose clusters of inkling cells? The inkling body would be able to manipulate ink through hormonal triggers or something, and different colors of ink would reflect to what set of triggers the ink reacts, leading foreig ink to dissolve or maybe recolor ones own ink triggering unwanted reactions in the body.
    It would also explain why so many microbes can gain nutrition from ink, and why being covered in friendly ink quickly recharges ink without removing it from the floor, you only absorb the reactive microbes.

    They say that water becomes deadly because of their thin skin which means that it might not have anything to do with the water itself, maybe it’s the pressure of the water, as you can see the drowning animation ends with the inkling going beneath the water which might mean the water is just squishing them, maybe their bodies are just very weak against the pressure like they can almost barely hold The surface gravity of earth nonetheless being in an ocean, which would be even weaker if the inklings had a lot of hollow spots which would make them even more susceptible to pressure.
    This explanation makes rain and not deadly at all but is the storm is strong enough then it might be able to puncture the inkling skin.
    Meanwhile, they take showers, but they put the pressure on really low or else it might hurt them.

    I've brought this up on nearly every splatoon vid related to water (that I've seen). but I personally belive that the reason why some water seems fine (such as drinks, showers, or in this case, rain), where as others are lethal, is because it's only SALTWATER that's harmful to them.
    the vast majority of the stages with water in them are near the ocean, and as for the ones that aren't, here are some examples on what they could be:
    stages like camp triggerfish seem to be on top of, or around a lake, and saltwater lakes are indeed a thing.
    stages like the reef seem to have water as more of a decoration, almost like a fountain, so maybe they intentionally make the water salty to keep people out of it.
    and as for the pool stages, maybe they take the time to clean the pool while turf wars are going on, with some kind of salt based cleaner. this would give the staff time to do there job, the inklings an extra challenge for there game (and the jellies some exclusive pool time).

    There’s why:
    In splatoon 3 story mode you can ink certain moving objects that enters in water (take a look at the secret kettle).
    The ink does not disappear when it touch water, so the weapons ink as the characters ink are in some way “waterproof”.
    Even during the story, you can see a character lying down on snow, so a direct contact with water do nothing to their bodies.
    My theory is they just can’t handle deeper fluids ( or maybe just water) cause during their evolution progress, they start swimming only in shallow ink and they “forgot” how to swim in deeper fluids.
    Ofc they have clothes that helps in rainy condition, as we have too.

    Having a specific color for each type of enzyme with a paired counter agent would comfortably explain this.
