It's my favorite Zelda game as well for that same reason! It was the first video game story I fell in love with, too.
This is one of the best games in the series because of how much emotional weight is put on the you throughout the game. Every NPC character has a unique story and role, and each has their own needs and problems, making the world feel more alive and raw.
Absolutely agree! One of the best parts about Majora's Mask is its characters, and how you're able to solve their personal problems by learning their daily routine and getting to know what kind of person they truly are. The falling moon is such a great plot device that adds to how attached I am to the townsfolk too, because you get to see how they uniquely react to the end of the world, and what actions different kinds of people would take depending on their personality and situation...
I especially related to the struggles of characters like Gorman and Pamela's Mummy Father, as their situation is very comparable to the depressing situations many of my friends (and myself) have been in. It's bittersweet to relieve characters of pain...😥
The Happy Mask Salesman may have been chosen by the giants to guard the mask to make sure that it can never be used.
Love this game, my favorite and I always seem to come back to it. Has so much lore in Termina that isn't explained but it's so interesting. Makes you feel like there's more benieth the surface of the game.
So glad to hear it's your favorite too! I replay it once every other year, and I think about it often. You make a great point, I think Majora does a great job of explaining certain plot elements just well enough while leaving others vague to open up discussion. It's a tough balance, but Termina's mysteries always keep me coming back!

Very great video! For some reason, I vastly prefer watching Majora's Mask content than actually playing it.
I can understand that, Majora's Mask's gameplay is not for everyone! For me, it's a comfort game because I played it so much growing up, but I realize how frustrating the mechanics could potentially be for first-time players.

Its difficult for me to pick a side in the debate of whether Twilight princess or Majoras mask is darker. But I would say MM is certainly more depressing.
Twilight Princess is one of the few major Zelda games I haven't finished! I plan to fix that soon--I'm going to buy the HD version through the Wii U eShop before it closes down (I wanted to wait for a rerelease on Switch, but I don't think that's happening anytime soon). It might be the next Zelda game I play after Majora's Mask, so I'll be able to compare them easily. I'll eventually get to it for this show!

Majora's Mask borrows quite a few plot elements from Final Fantasy VII, which came out three years before and was a major reason for the success of Sony's new console. Considering the game's development led to a bitter feud between Nintendo and Square, one can't help but wonder if this was Nintendo's way of "getting back" at its former partner company by lifting some of its ideas!
Both stories involve a world-threatening disaster (the Moon/Meteor) summoned by a villain possessed by an ancient power (the Mask/Jenova) that is so dangerous it was sealed away by a mysterious race (the Ikana tribe/the Cetra) until it was discovered hundreds of years later (by the Happy Mask Salesman/Shinra.) In both stories, the hero journeys into an otherworldly realm before the final battle (the inside of the Moon/the core of the Planet), and the world is saved by the intervention of an elemental force of nature (the Four Giants/the Lifestream.) Also in both stories, the villain is physically absent for most of the narrative: Skull Kid is only seen at the beginning and the end, while Sephiroth is only occasionally glimpsed through hallucinations and flashbacks. The major difference is that Skull Kid is humanised and redeems himself at the end, whereas there is no question that Sephiroth is evil.
There are too many similarities to ignore. If you're ever stuck for ideas for a future video, this could be a topic worth exploring.

Did u know Aji onuma is kinda embarrassed and ashamed about this game, he said in a quote he didn't know what was wrong with him when he made it. Or something to that effect at least
It's pretty upsetting he thought there was so much wrong with the original experience...the 3DS remake was a result of that embarrassment with its overcorrections

Really great video though that Happy Masked Salesman is an idiot. He wanted & found an extremely evil and powerful mask then decided to go through a dark forbidding forest. Hard to see how such a plan could've gone horribly wrong

Something I’d like to say is I think anju’s grandma was indeed right in saying the imp returned to the heavens. I think the imp revered to in the story isn’t skull kid but instead majora before it was transformed into a mask. Let’s look at the evidence, 1 obviously anju’s grandma saying the imp returned to the heavens, 2 if the imp in the story is indeed skull kid it would mean that skull kid has existed since time began meaning he has to be immortal, 3 when skull kid hears the sound of the giants he starts panicking and screaming, 4 majora’s incarnation acts like a child dancing, running around, and even throwing a tantrum when hit, and finally 5 while inside the moon the 4 moon children are wearing the masks of the bosses this obviously is symbolic of the giants but in the center in a fetal position is a moon child wearing majora’s mask and gives you the fierce deity mask if the moon child wearing the mask is supposed to be skull kid why would he have a mask said to be more powerful than majora itself Also majora’s incarnation and wrath look an awful lot like the giants. And as for when skull kid talks to the giants he could have reminded the giants of their old friend and so they became friends also but that’s just my opinion

I own and love that manga! I might talk about in one of these episodes--I don't consider it canon but it's cool nevertheless and I like the origin story being linked to the Fierce Diety

I just finished watching the "DELETE" version of this video. Why was it called that anyways and why was it deleted?
Haha, I did not mean to publish that! It was a version I had ready yesterday, which was mostly the same but upon re-watching I realized I had pronounced "Aonuma" wrong, so I rerecorded the mistake this morning. I also took the opportunity to add a couple of sound effects for transitions. I kept it up so I could copy over the subtitles, end card, etc. and put DELETE at the end as a reminder to myself 😅 I've done it plenty of times in the past, this is the first time I made the wrong one public!

Nothing beats the foreboding and surreal nature of Termina! I love that there's an ever-present sense of dread throughout the entire game, but it still manages to be packed full of heartwarming & funny moments. It's my comfort game, even though there's always a clock ticking down to doomsday 😆
