@techno dad. What does it mean when they say " 140 watts per channel with 2 channels driven " on home theater receivers? I don't understand 2 channels driven. If your speakers are wired up don't they all have power driving them?
@@onetwo6039 That's the trick. Assume half of the 2 ch rated power is what you would be, theoretically, getting for all the channels according to my personal opinion.
I purchased 2nd hand Denon AVR, entry level audiophile main speakers & 43" HD TV. I didn't want to spend money on new top shelf AVR surround, centre speakers & subwoofer without knowing what I wanted for room size & application. My priority was digital audio first then video. After experimenting with various speakers I am happy with Dolby Digital 2.1 setup with HDTV & XBOX One S HDMI input. I still have Denon AVR as it meets needs. My preference is films with dramatic impact rather than epic, action & SF etc., with emphasis on tonal balance & clarity of audio over speaker output power. Good main speakers positioned correctly relative to listener creates phantom centre speaker, & Dolby Digital delivers surround effects to main speakers in such a way as to create surround effect for my listening room. Not having to concern myself with surround, back & centre speakers mean I can allocate budget to main, subwoofer, AVR & TV upgrades in future. As I don't want > 43" TV I don't see benefit in 8k. More pixels is barely noticeable with smaller screen. I am considering 4K TV upgrade in near future.
This guy kept me watching it all the way till the end. I just couldn't skip any of it. Thanks for making this so damn clear! Finally found someone with enough patience didatics to draw it like that for newbies.
Thankyou for the excellent video. As far as old speakers, I bought a pair of Infinity SM-152's about 30 years ago. As the name implies these speakers have 15 inch woofers in them and they have no problem shaking the room when called upon. No subwoofer needed with these.
Thanks, TechnoDad. Been there , done that, got the T-shirt. Spent $500 per RCA cable, spect $1000 per speaker cable. Over $15,000 system. My best advice, is don’t get sucked in to the “price” and the key is that whatever level stuff you get, spend time with it to “tweak-it” to your ears and what you like. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, get all your speakers matched, IMHO! My entry level matched Pioneer Andrew Young bedroom set up speakers 5.1 with an entry level Denton is just as enjoyable as my $3000 Onkyo great room powered with two separate dual channel amps for front and center speakers with all speakers in the 7.2 system being a mix of B&W 800 and 700 and a set of custom Stephen Sank’s front left and right speakers. All great speakers. For watching home theatre either room is roughly equivalent. THAT is home important matched speakers are IMHO. Peace and Out . . .

I have a friend who’s an audiophile and the web pages he sent me to were pretty hard to understand. Thank you so much for making these videos it’s really made the info much much more digestible
Hi William! I totally understand where you’re coming from. It can be really confusing and there are so many options that shopping for equipment can be a daunting task. There are more videos in my series “Home Theater Basics” which breaks down parts of this hobby for people that are new. Check it out and if you have any questions, feel free to email me: technodad55 at gmail (bit.ly/2jeiXyO)
A lot of good info. For the budget AV Receiver Look at the Onkyo TX-SR373 5.2 Channel AV. Supports all the Main Stream Standards. Only Draw back no Dolby Atmos, but for Most People this is not a requirement. Allow for 4K HDR Passthrough and very easy to setup. Also comes with a Surround Setup Mic to help setup Surround Sound. Normally comes with Higher End Models.
My last 2 AVR'S I purchased from accessaries4less. The first I used for 4 years and not a single issue. The only reason I got another one is because I was not aware of the need for preouts. My new one is a Marantz SR5013. I Paid less than half of what it cost on amazon. You can't beat that. They look brand new. Come with a 1 year warranty and the bugs have been removed if there were any. Most of the time the problem with them is operator error and the units did not have a problem to begin with but not always. All I know is I have been more than pleased with my purchase's. I also bought a pair of Def Tec D11's for less than half what they cost new. You just can't beat these prices and the products are great. God Bless
@@TechnoDad I purchased 2 AVR'S and a pair of DEF TECH D11'S and not a single issue. I will never buy anything they carry that's refurbished from anywhere else. They give a one year warranty on refurb items. Honestly you can not touch their prices and you can not tell the products are not new. Try it and you will love it. I did it because otherwise I would have had to do without or settle for a much cheaper item. I'm telling you this stuff is half price and well worth it. You can always buy homeowners insurance that will cover these items. I was concerned about the hdmi boards on the Onkyo AVR's so I purchased infinity fans for it. They have a reputation of not being reliable. I swear I have not had even the slightest problem. I purchased the Onkyo AVR over 4 years ago and it still works like new. It's a great receiver. I only got a new one because I wanted pre-outs. I just did not realize I needed them at the time. This new Marantz SR5013 is fantastic. Although I do like the way my remote control operated more with the Onkyo than the Marantz with ARC. Seriously you should give them a try but would not mention it to Gene. He likes people buying new from him.loI Anyway let me know if you do give it a shot and what you think about it. Have a great day. I love your videos and am happy I could help if I did.
I mix brands sometimes. My speakers Woofers are Klipsch, front, center, and surrounds are Sony my receiver is Pioneer, It all works and sounds awesome My HDMI on the pioneer is 4K 2.2. Used the auto calibration feature In a room 24x22.
You mention in this video that speakers often greatly outlive their AV receiver for one reason or another. I have a set of 5.1 speakers that have not left the room they were set up in for some time now. They've really stood the test of time and have delivered consistently good sound for being designed to be enjoyed in early 2005. The newest member of my home theatre is a Yamaha RX-V385. Thing was, the watts match but the speakers are 4 ohms and the receiver is 6-8 ohms. I freaked out for all of two minutes about the impedance until I took a look at the corpse of the old receiver laying on the back deck: 8 ohms. This essentially tells me that I can keep using my wonderful speakers so long as I continue to operate with the same mindset: Just keep a careful eye on the volume, and any distortion I turn it down.
You are one of the best out there to master how to break down very technical audio/video concept into very basic term for any average user. Well done!! Great job!
By the way, my rock that knowledge comments were meant as a compliment, I just realized You could take it as a dis. .not my intentions. You really are the man. Love your stuff.
I also love your advice. When I buy electronic audio/video equipments or computer laptops I always go by that rule: Get the best out there that I love & my budget can afford, then make a commitment to myself to rock it for next X years.
I agree with your advice! I've been into stereos for 40+ years and do you know how many times I've had to update?? From vinyl to 8 tracks to cassettes to cd's to dolby surround to 5.1 digital and so on and so on!! I still have and love my speakers I bought 35 years ago!!
Techno dad while adjusting the test tones levels for each individual speaker, at what level should the master volume be at? Like the master avr volume?
Man, the end of your video relly struck a chord with me. I get really OCD about best bang for the buck when I shop for AV, PC, phones, anything really. Figure out the specs that you NEED. Figure out the most you can spend. JUST PCK 3 PLACES TO BUY FROM!!! You can make yourself nuts trying to save what usually amounts to under $10. Find a good deal on the parts that work for you and hit the buy it now button. I just recently found this channel and I am really enjoying it. Thanks a bunch. I already subscribed!
I got really nice Definitive speakers 12 years ago. I looked them up today and the cost more than what I paid for them 12 years ago lol. They were really expensive. But that was the best advice ever. Buy the best speakers you can get.
I am a new subscriber too your channel, love them, like the way you take something complicated and make it simple, because it is simple, I buy my all piece by piece, i wait and get exactly what i want! Thanks TD
Great helpful video, what I basically got is buy great speakers, buy a good 9 or 11 channel amp (for future proofing) use this 2 things for like forever and a really basic AVR...is it right?
I need some advise. I have 2 older receivers and i only want to spend the money to restore 1. Which should i choose, the Denon AVR 4520CI or the Integra DTR 7.8? I got lucky to find a HDMI board for the Integra and i love the THX ultra 2 certification, but I also love the 9 channels of power from the Denon. All comments are welcomed and I'd like to know the pros and cons of each. My decision will be based on all comments and advise. Feel free to be as detailed as you like and i assure you that each and every comment will be read.
Regarding you're progressing technology viewpoint, that's what I did around 2004 when our 32" CRT tv bit the dust. Flat screens were still $6000 so I got a bigger 36" CRT. It was a heavy monster box of tubes and such. It felt like a week later (couple years probably) that flat screens dropped to near the price I paid for my monster CRT, ha ha. Just the breaks sometimes. Good content 👍.
Hey Techno Dad, thanks for this video it really simplifies things for me as I am new to this home theater arena. Appreciate all that you do brother keep up the good work!! 😀
What a breath of fresh air... Go to any audio-video discussion forum, and there are these many nut-heads discussing heatedly about various things, you would think listening to good sound is serious back-bending work. Yes, flat frequency-response is important, but who has the room for a vintage, large, speaker anymore?! And why the hell is no one testing the power outputs of these AVRs per channel when more than one or two channels are being driven -- which is the whole bloody point of these AVRs? And what are the companies hiding by not publishing this information? Don't tell me to buy an amp, just tell me how much are you giving me per channel, and let me decide. Yeah, most playing will not drive more than 2 channels at a time, that does not mean i should not have that info... leave it to the customer to make sense of it! What is the power per channel when I listen to explosion driven in 7 channels? Isn't that the basic Denon or Marantz need to publish?! Geez..... Ahem... yeah, these things make you bent out of shape for a while.
Hi Samurai! Yeah, it’s a big PITA to figure these things out and to test them as well. I know Gene from Audioholics does test AVRs, but it’s usually the high end ones. It take a lot of equipment that isn’t cheap.
Sure. Is why, it is more of a moral and ethical responsibility of the AVR designing companies to publish sufficient information. Instead, they use the power to seemingly hide information, and therefore, provide no regulated common ground for information. 'Confuse the customer into buying something,... anything... hehe... we need money...' seems like the hissing motto, or tag line of these companies. Feels like the companies want to come across as fly-by-night operators, trying to con people, all of them in a hand-in-glove nexus.
Techno Dad, if money was no object, would you buy a $4000 AVR and pair it with a multi-chanel Amp? Or a pre-pro and pair it with an Amp? If you could post a video addressing that, I would really appreciate it. BA
So if I want to connect my ps5, Apple TV and sonos arc to the av receiver, will it mean that I can run only one hdmi to my tv instead of 3 directly to the tv?
Enjoyed your video... the end of your video is so true, I went through a similar decision when looking at TVs I ended up buying a refurb Sony 75” 900e over a new 75” 900f. The 900f technically supported “dolby vision” but after doing some digging I learned it only partially supported it... the 900e was $1200 cheaper and is the exact same display, (slightly different processors), and I used that extra money to buy some bad ass movie theater seats, I’m so happy I did my research and I’ll wait 5 years and buy an 85” or 90” display that supports “full Dolby vision” lol cause we all know that’s coming.
Yeah I upgraded my TV to Samsung Q8FN (I know it’s not an OLED, but it’s great to me lol) and upgraded my Blu-ray player to Samsung 4K UBD M9500 (might be Trump to you, but it’s the artist formerly known as Prince to me lol) and kept my Onkyo TX-SR608 7.2 with Pyle Home and Klipsch speakers and two subs. And I run all video from all my HDMI sources straight to the TV and a second HDMI from all sources for sound to my older Onkyo and it still rocks with Dolby Height and DTS Master Audio and THX in some instances. I’ll wait a few more years on upgrading my Receiver. Great video and I loved your point about taking a stand somewhere and using common sense. And Audyssey 2EQ on my Receiver is the way to go, no measuring or holding calibrators lol. 👍👍
Just stepped up to a yahmaha 2070 polk signature series 7.2 s60x2,s35,s20x4 and hts12 x2. Thanx for the commonsense view of the AV world. Can only think about listening to my system right now, My house is under construction(fire) and will be ready sometimes in October. " Thanx Fer Sharin"
Good vid man... I have a Denon x1200 with 6 in a 1 out hdmi... I have 2 questions... Can I pass-through both audio and video to my TV? Also, if I want to also add a projector to my setup can I do that??? Thank you
This was very nice, thank you. Will you be doing a video showing how to get some sound out of the speakers? I am very impressed by your theoretical knowledge, and would like to get a practical explanation of how to make it all work, please.

I am searching for some advice and hoping you could help. I am working at a new home sales office and the three model homes are all wired for joint audio. I am looking for a simple solution that can push low-volume audio to all 3 model homes (27 speakers). Or, maybe i could also use 3 separate systems that can run each model home individually. Keeping in mind a couple of dynamics i must face off with. 1) Theft - System needs to be either small enough to hide or i need a way to secure it. 2) Temporary - I plan to sell these homes and remove my equipment. 3) Cost - because of the purpose and the specific need i do not need something high end but rather affordable. Currently there are 18 wires bundles and coming out of the wall. Would i need an amp and an AVR? Any suggestions would be helpful, thank you!

Hi, plan to add amp in my existing onkyo rz730 avr to enhance sound. my question is can you use an avr or just an amphlifier as extended unit? what would be the difference? Thank you and more power!
How would I get my television sound to come out of my surround sound system- I’m having to purchase a new receiver because my old school one only has audio output ports and my new television doesn’t have those ports
I own the X4300h and have been digging like crazy for the all channels power ratings. I e-mailed Denon support. Their answer: “This unit does not have an rms ratings but you can just go by what is back on the receiver which shows nominal 710w.” Sucks. I just installed an Emotiva A-300 to use with my Klipsch RP-160m.
Hello, I am new to this world of theaters, I bought an Onkyo Receiver that has only one "Output" OUT HDMI ARC, but I need an image to come out for a projector on the ceiling and for the TV without connecting and disconnecting cables. What is the solution? The idea is to connect the cable TV router, the PC and the Bluray player to the "Inputs" IN HDMI of the Receiver, even there are plenty of inputs but no outputs. :( I appreciate the help.
Hi! That doesn't look too bad. You can get 5.1 up and running, and it's less than $200. You may want to upgrade in a couple of years if you like it and want more power or more features. Good starter AVR though!

Hello TechnoDad. Can you help me setup my Denon AVR-X500 with my Sony Bravia TV? I cannot seem to get the audio transferred from my TV to the AVR. Thank you.

What if my TV supports eARC and I want to use the built-in apps. But my av - reciever has only ARC. How do I connect the TV to the receiver to get the dts-x or Dolby Atmos sound???

Thanks for a great informative video! I have a question, hoping you can answer that. You mentioned how we plug in all the input sources like XBox, Blue Ray player, dorect tv, etc to the input HDMI ports of the receiver and connect a display to the output HDMI port on the receiver. However, in recent times when we have smart TVs with Android TV built-in, how do we connect the TV, which is now an input source for the receiver as well as an output destination. Basically, if I am watching 4K content with 5.1 audio on Netflix app on my smart TV, how do I ensure that the 5.1 audio goes to the 5.1 speakers via the AVR?
Hi, I know, the reply is too late , but I saw nobody Answered your question till. That's why I do this. All smart TV have a optical output for external speakers or a home theater. This single cable transfer the surround sound audio to your tv to avr. 2) when you play a Dolby digital or any other format, the avr automatically change the listing mode. And it's also show on your avr display. If you know hindi language, so please subscribe my channel also. Just click here 👉#audioguruji

Hi Charles! You have to be careful about power ratings on AVRs as they can be confusing. Mostly, those ratings are a two channel rating, which is stereo. When you run 5, 7, 9, or 11 channels off one AVR, you will not be getting 110 wpc into each speaker. That's why I always recommend adding a power amplifier. Here's a video on the subject - th-cam.com/video/RO3VmAyWO6U/w-d-xo.html

+TheSpartanJc Nice! Sounds like a kick ass system!! I may add another two height channels soon! Still trying to figure out which ones to try.
TheSpartonJC how you like your monster Yammie 3070 i was thinking about upgrading i use to own a RX-V630 back in the day it was a 6.1 setup with about 70watts at 6 channels long story short i ended up giving it to my friend and ended up with a sorround sound that ive also had for awhile which is a 6.1 kenwood which lacks in sound quality once turned up it will get a static sound its funny cuss it says its rated for 150x6 my yamaha could roar and not sound distorted im thinking of going all out this time im a big audio guy and im thinking either the RX-A2080 or Go all out and get the RX-A3080
I have a friend who’s an audiophile and the web pages he sent me to were pretty hard to understand.
I got the Yamaha TSR-700 from Costco. Great option for the price too

Oh shit!
God Bless
I have always wanted to order something from there. I'm always a bit squeamish about doing so...
Nice!
Well done!! Great job!
Thank you!
By the way, my rock that knowledge comments were meant as a compliment, I just realized You could take it as a dis. .not my intentions. You really are the man. Love your stuff.
+Timothy Mathetes Lol! It's all good Tim! I didn't take it as a dis!
I also love your advice. When I buy electronic audio/video equipments or computer laptops I always go by that rule: Get the best out there that I love & my budget can afford, then make a commitment to myself to rock it for next X years.
Yup! That’s the best approach.
Do you plug in the speakers to the power amp or the receiver ?
I agree with your advice! I've been into stereos for 40+ years and do you know how many times I've had to update?? From vinyl to 8 tracks to cassettes to cd's to dolby surround to 5.1 digital and so on and so on!! I still have and love my speakers I bought 35 years ago!!
True I too have 30 year speaker system high end that time 8 inch BOLTEN woofer still no other woofer matches it’s out put sound
Techno dad while adjusting the test tones levels for each individual speaker, at what level should the master volume be at? Like the master avr volume?

I got really nice Definitive speakers 12 years ago. I looked them up today and the cost more than what I paid for them 12 years ago lol. They were really expensive. But that was the best advice ever. Buy the best speakers you can get.

Excellent video and good editorial suggestions. I appreciate it.
Thank you so much!
You are awesome Channa.....that advice piece was kickass......
Glad you liked it Savio!!
Any advice on how to update your receivers firmware?
How to connect soundbars with subwoofers to AVR and self powered speakers like 5.1 channels and 2.1 channels?
No, you wouldn't want to do that as the soundbar processes the signal.
I have a question .If you dont use all your channels on your avr would you have more reserved power for your other speakers ?
Yes, typicaly, that's how it works.
Best video I have found, great job!
Will the AVR sound work for what ever is built in your TV?
Yes, you can use the ARC/eARC function.
@@TechnoDad ye, thanks for the reply. I set up my system 2 months ago :)

Hey Techno Dad, thanks for this video it really simplifies things for me as I am new to this home theater arena. Appreciate all that you do brother keep up the good work!! 😀
Hello Marco! Thank you for watching. I hope I can help in the future as well.
I'm new to the world of surround. Very informative video with nice & clear explanations!
Awesome! I have more videos in the home theater basics category which will definitely help.
Techno Dad, if money was no object, would you buy a $4000 AVR and pair it with a multi-chanel Amp? Or a pre-pro and pair it with an Amp? If you could post a video addressing that, I would really appreciate it. BA
Are modern receivers still 3D compatible? Same with 4K TVs?
Yes
How do you add a power amp to an Yamaha receiver that does not have a pre out section. Can I use the tape in or out inputs
The 900f technically supported “dolby vision” but after doing some digging I learned it only partially supported it... the 900e was $1200 cheaper and is the exact same display, (slightly different processors), and I used that extra money to buy some bad ass movie theater seats, I’m so happy I did my research and I’ll wait 5 years and buy an 85” or 90” display that supports “full Dolby vision” lol cause we all know that’s coming.
great presentation, very clear, thank you
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for your videos TD! Very informative. Keep up the good work, always looking forward watching your videos. :)

How would I get my television sound to come out of my surround sound system- I’m having to purchase a new receiver because my old school one only has audio output ports and my new television doesn’t have those ports
Hi! You would use the ARC/eARC function from TV to AVR
I'm trying to hook up my Crystal hb 450 5.1 surround sound receiver, to my speakers. How?

Good My AVR is Yamaha HTR 3072 Just purchased before 3 months using old satalite Yamaha 5.1 speakers with Yamaha woofer. My flat area is 120 feet. Pl make video of standard calibration on above AVR. Thanks from India
Techno dad I have a question for you I got this Yamaha RX 1080 and it says it's 110 watts per Channel so my question is, is it 100-watt 110 watts per speaker? My set up atmos 5.1.2
Thank you Sir!!
Amazingly helpful video man, keep up

Hi! I have a question: so, would you say oled is the type that'll give you the best 4k? Or,can I get the Samsung mu6300 and get the same experience?
+Timothy Mathetes You'll always get a better picture with OLED because it can produce a proper black. The closest LCD/LED TVs that can come close to OLED have FALD (Full Array w/ Local Dimming). For 2017, I recommend Sony's X900E series. It's mid-priced, has 32 zones of local dimming, and is available in 49", 55", 65", and 75". Great channel ! Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. I found your channel while searching for information leads on resolving my home theater problem. We have the following equipment by alphabetical order; Bose Lifestyle V25 Home Theater, Panasonic Blu-Ray Disc Player [Model No. DMP-BDT210], Samsung 55" Class KU650D Curved 4K UHD TV [Model UN55KU650DFXZA], Samsung Digital Home Theater System [Model HT-DS610]. The trigger/last straw to reconfigure our Home Entertainment Remote Control (HERC) System was that the DS610 terminals for the rear speakers failed to deliver sound [besides the original remote control was basically inoperable]. I am trying to send the sound from the Samsung DS610 into the Bose LSV25 Home Theater System. Oh yeah ATT-DirecTV is our provider!
So... connecting to the tv? Do you need optical and hdmi or just hdmi arc, for Atmos.? I’m new to this and just bought new speakers and waiting on my receiver. Any info would help. Thx
Hi, I am setting up a marantz sr6015 with 5.1.2, where I am using thx504L for centre ch and thx 502L for front leg and right. Rp 402s for surround and cs18 C for the atmos ceiling speakers.. Here I am not too sure abt the centre speaker, if it is appropriate for this amp or I should go with thx 502-L? Because in the description it is recommended for 150w amp?
I’m glad I found your channel! Question which AVR would you recommend that offers (true) wireless rear speakers and the subwoofer, (no speaker wires at all) just plugged into 110. Do I need more than 1 HDMI EArc ? I need no less than 4 HDMI sources. With at least 1 Optical Port. Also how will this effect the new FCC mandated ATSC 3.0 over the air broadcasting that is coming, signal, transmission, receiving Fm AM signals? I like my music extremely loud and the more base the better. I’m updating from sound bars! Thanks
if I buy a surround sound receiver with preouts, can I use those preouts to connect to a separate amplifier that would power my front left and right.
+Zimba's Doom Corner Yes, but I was recommended by emotiva to get a 3 channel amp so the entire front stage is power by an external amp. That's what I plan on doing.
That is the whole point of pre-outs. I use multiple amps to have separate power supplies to keep the noise and cross talk out. Remember to use quality cables.
Well explained bro.i am setting up my home theater in 2018 but should I start with budget or buy the best? My priority will be high on audio stuff. What about Polk audio signature series speakers?
Srikanth Yadav my take in this is to go separates and get modular systems that can be upgraded as time goes by check out emotiva
Srikanth Yadav emotiva have power amps u can add channels as needed up to 14 channels and the xmc-1 preamp processor can be upgraded to meet the new things to come my system is like Dat I have power on reserve
Creswell Jack thanks bro. I will check that.😊
