I had watched a few videos about receivers and none of them really made sense until I came across this video. I've been thinking about getting a receiver as I know others who have them, but didn't know anything about them. This video gave an easy-to-understand basic explanation. This was the first step I needed!

Usually AVRs have much better DACs, however are limited in the amplification section. That's why most AVRs are rated at 1 channel, but if you add additional amps via the pre-outs you can get a very decent sound/video stage without straining the AVR. Like having a processor for signal and separate amplification stage. It can get really expensive, really fast but nothing beats having a system capable of running a 500 people venue in your living room.

      @MrWirelesscaller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@Dre Ci quote: "...It can get really expensive, really fast but..."
Response: I'd advise to most people, do a little research, and buy used for amps and speakers (check the surrounds if it's foam for rot, avoid Bose), when buying an AVR buy a quality brand (Denon, Marantz, Yamaha, etc) with pre-outs to cut down on the expenses. Audiophiles as a whole tend to believe that the "grass is greener" on the other side so are upgrade addicts, so a person can buy some great deals on amps and speakers from these upgrade addicts. If a person wants raw power (for example running passive subs or if you want brute power to fill a larger room) a pro-sound reinforcement amps (QSC, Crown, etc) can be grabbed pretty cheap but be careful if it was owned by a former smoker if you don't like such smells. Literally going used will save the average buyer at least 50% or more if the item has been out at least 3+ years (for example you're not going to get the latest model amp for cheap but you may find the predecessor model at a bargain pricing).

@@MrWirelesscaller Used is used and will def require more expenses to bring it back to working order, not to mention the down time, if at all possible with some equipment. For the past decade many A/V receivers have had certain electronic faults, some easy, some severe, but when you can't do the job yourself, you might get stuck in down time and the end result with $$$$ will be almost the same. Repairing speakers is not even an easy job as it sounds and repairing something vintage with modern materials might make it better....or worse. It's a full time job hobby and several college degrees, but it's not for everyone. With used equipment you never know HOW it was used. There are gems to find here and there, but not in an overly consumer's based society. I have a BOSE from 1991, a 2.1 system, which still works and works great, compared to the BS that they themselves fork out today or others trying to fill the gaps in the sector. I very rarely will buy used, given that I assume the person who ran it is a complete imbecile and unless armed with the required knowledge, experience and testing equipment I would stay away from used. The amount of amps, speakers and A/V receivers I've seen, after refurbishment just to boost the price is insane....just to have them fail 2 months later and they're your problem. The middle segment seems to have disappeared. It's either crappy sounding, but good looking solutions for speakers and/or cheap, weak, distorting and limiting amps or the above average stuff which costs quite more and still lasts....but one needs to know what is required and how to achieve it, half-way short of manufacturing it themselves, because brands have lost it long time ago.... ;)

Your amplifier you refer to is actually what was once known as a integrated amplifier. Amplifier with preamplifier. I prefer separates which you didn’t touch on. I know you were trying to keep it simple. Which is great for someone just starting out. Why separates? I have 2 different pairs of speakers. One set are rated at 4 ohm impedance. They require more power just to “turn on”. They need a minimum of 25 watts of high current to come alive. The other pair are older & they have a 6 ohm impedance. To drive both of different loads would be very hard for one amplifier without going into why? It’s simpler & easier to have 2 amplifiers to drive separate loads through one preamplifier.

  • @densfordt
    @densfordt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

These are some important things you left out of the beginning ...
Firstly, Stereo means 2 channels. That does not include multichannel signals. The distinction is important.
Secondly, an amplifier, regardless of the gain knob, requires an input of at least 1V, hence the necessity of a preamp. [This needs to be clarified at the beginning] You can't just plug any audio source into an amp and expect it to play with any meaningful loudness. Preamps take various sources (CDs, DVDs, PCs, etc) and with proper volume control, boost their signals to the proper amplitude for the amplifier(s). Depending on whether you want Stereo or some surround format you can either buy an amp(s) and a separate Preamp or buy a "Receiver", audio or audio/visual, which includes a plethora of inputs and the volume control, and the amp(s) (depending on the surround format)...Once the distinctions are established you can move to the various configurations.

As long as the device you're plugging into the amp is at line level, has RCA or optical outputs you don't need a pre-amp.

In the formative days of high fidelity stereo equipment, the difference between an amp and a receiver was, the receiver had an FM/AM receiver in it. This is still true of AV receivers.

I was an audiophile back in the 70's, 80's spent lot of money on systems, I originally went component systems, because of the ability to get good quality at every point, power amp, pre-amp, tuner, my opinion at that time is if you by a receiver you are getting all that in one component and sacrifices are being made, even thou there were many good receivers with lots of power they perhaps didn't have as good a pre-amp, tuner or power amp, but that gets real pricy. So, a stereo receiver is a good to way to it all in one package at a lower price.
    Someday perhaps McIntosh, just dreaming.

All working and great sound, but after 20 years my wife wanted 1 remote control and less than 50meters of cabling. There is even a free panasonic 37" plasma TV (non-smart) too.

For all you beginner beginner audio enthusiast who want to have your first component system you should start with a 5.1 receiver even if you are only purchasing a pair of speakers. Just make sure if you start adding speakers to the first pair that they are part of the exact same model series and product line from one manufacturer. Cruchfield makes for a good source of information of solid audio product availability and expected prices before you decide to go shopping at your favorite big box retailer or independent home electronics retailer. My first home theater system I still enjoy. It's built around an old Panasonic AV100 5.1/6.1 receiver with 5 Energy Connoisseur speakers. That's a 100w/channel @ 8 ohms, nothing special or high end but solid. The biggest strength of my setup is limitless connectivity that's still relevant today. Biggest weakness is the living room the whole system is in. Room acoustics leave a lot to be desired but there is a limit to what you are allowed to do to a condo suite.

I've been watching more and more stuff like this. When I was young my older brother left his stereo system at home when he went to college because the place he and his 3 friends from high school live at all 4 years was such a shit hole in a horrible neighborhood that it got broken into monthly at least. They didn't even bother having a TV in the house and used the trunks of their cars to keep everything they owned that was worth picking up and carrying off. He had a Pioneer set up. Pioneer receiver, turntable, and tape deck. He also owned about 200 vinyl records and quite a few cassette tapes. I miss that so much, I really want to get a set up myself but to buy the old vintage stuff it cost a arm and a leg.

I just bought a Marantz Stereo 70s. A new model of a stereo receiver. Its 2 channel stereo but it has 6 HDMI inputs so it can work with an AppleTV or a BluRay player!
The Stereo 70s replaced an old Onkyo TX-NR809 from 2012 which had been delegated to 2 channel music listening in my small study/office about 6 or 7 years ago. Thats about when we bought a 4K TV and the Onkyo did not handle 4K signals.
After connecting and listening to some music, I was pleasantly surprised at how much better my 90’s NHT 1.1 speakers performed. Better imaging, bigger soundstage, more detail, better definition, improved clarity. I was impressed how much better the NHT 1.1 sound, even though the Marantz Stereo 70s puts out 75 watts into 8 ohms and the Onkyo is 130 watts, both 2 channels driven. Wonder what magic Marantz does to create such an impressive performance?

Amplifier - amplifies signal. Can be mono or stereo or multi channel. Can be a power (no volume) or integrated with volume and multiple inputs and outputs.
Stereo amplifier - above with only two channel. Stereo
Power amplifier - no volume. Can be mono or stereo or multi channel
Pre-amplifier - no power wattage. Has volume and possible tone controls and multi inputs and outputs.
Audio / video receiver - multi purpose. More flexibility with more signal inputs and outputs. Multi channel extended. 9.2.4 in newer ones. Flexible. One chassis. Often multiple sound processors. May include crossover.
Integrated amplifier - combined both pre amp and amp. Usually focused more on sound quality and simplicity over an AVR.
Home Theater - entire package including speakers. Multiple channel. Focuses on 5.1 or 7.2 or now 9.2.4, etc.

Problem with a lot of AV Receivers is, they sometimes come without Bass & Treble as the manufacturers say, it ruins the original sound of the recording. Some don't even have a remote because a certain manufacturer said and I quote "remote controls ruin the sound".
If you are looking for a integrated amplifier, AV Receiver, etc write down notes of what you want it to do, and the controls it must have, then there you have it, you will be able to search for that perfect amp.

You need a receiver to run an amp. Put those two together you get an integrated amp / AVR/ stereo receiver depending on what you buy. And amp/power amp does nothing else except send the signal to the speakers. It can receive usually one source from a integrated amp or a pre-amt which is a receiver without the amp.
So there is basically just 3 things. Amp, integrated amp and receiver where you can choose with or without video on the receiver part.

    • @johnbowick7109

Good video however you have excluded the correct definition for an amplifier. An amplifier with a gain control (or not) is called a POWER AMPLIFIER and can have any number of channels. An amplifier with a volume control and input selection (preamplifier section) and speaker outputs (usually stereo) is called an INTEGRATED AMPLIFIER. Hope this helps

Solid Intel... The way I see it a stereo amplifier would be great in a gym set up. Most people will go with an AV receiver. Very helpful in getting my Klipsch 5.1 home theater set up. Thx bro!!

Great video and helpful for nubes such as myself. Constructive criticism...go a little mellower on the lighting as it makes your skin look a tad too white...cheers!

In the UK a receiver is an amplifier with a tuner built in. Its that simple. Receivers were around long before sound processing

There is one more difference...AV receivers are more concentrated on video codecs which are recorded for watching movie effects ..but audio amplifiers are aimed for music which are more on listening instruments and ...quaility of music listening in audio amplifiers will be better than AV receivers...So it’s personal Choice enjoyable watching movies with those movie audio effects e.g helicopter surround sound ...Or full enjoyable music

getting a receiver with preouts allows you flexibility in adding more amplification down the road..invest a little more now for that advantage, or go low-end receiver and have to upgrade the recever later to get more power..depends on the pocketbook....another solution for more power is to switch to a powered "active" amp so the speakers have more of the power to divide amongst themselves

how about mentioning (for the people interested), that despite all the fancy stuff in the AV receivers, they don't output even nearly as much power as a dedicated audio amplifier, because the built in amplifiers are just not made for that, or in comparison, a sound system of an average AV receiver will sound similarly to those surround sound speakers which used to be sold with DVD players etc. that should be a more appropriate explanation, tyvm

Yeah maybe a low-end receiver.... A lot of High end receivers have huge power transformers and capacitors, and output good, clean high power signals.

I’m wanting to set up a 3 zone audio system on the cheap. I have a projector I’d run 2 speakers and a sub in one zone and the other 2 zones are outside patio and deck that I’d only run 2 speakers each . What would you recommend?

Love my Sony receiver. And I love that it turns on/off when I hit the power button on my Roku remote.
