    I'm 66 years old and have been a music lover from my Beach Boy days, still like a lot of what's on the market. I never knew what you taught today, so Big thanks. I'm retired and have a Sony receiver 7.1 rated at 125 watts per channel powering 5 speakers on surround sound, but I use only the 2 front Polk's on music setting. I sit 8 feet away. Speaker are rated at 89 sensitivity, so thanks to you I now understand I'm good for what I need in an apartment. ( Polk 10" subwoofer needs to be kept down till neighbors leave. LOL

You have some great videos in general but this time you actually hit another target of listeners,.I would say a notch above amateur audiophile. I think if you keep your videos simple and with the usual quality we are used to from you and bring-in the more advance audiophiles listeners with topics that actually interests these people you will certainly gain a broader audience in the process. Don' t get too technical but do keep your slides coming in with specs, we love that lol. Cheers Al

    Excellent video, I never knew the sensitivity rating but I quickly started looking at them...Elac vs Martin Logan where it’s 85/86 vs 92. Still it seems for small rooms/dens you probably can cut a few corners and be fine with a set of Elac B6.2 as an example.

  • @raider3164
    @raider3164 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question from a newbie. Why do avr say 145watts per channel. If u only need the say 65 watts to power m. Also how much real power is going to the speakers from the avr

  • @swinde
    @swinde 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The higher wattage of an amplifier mainly comes into play at the peak volume of the musical piece. I have fairly low efficiency speaker in the AR-3a model. It will handle 11 watts rms continuously an any frequency, 23 watts for 30 seconds, and overloads of 400 watts for 2 seconds. These are pure sine waves. The manufacturer recommends a minimum of 25 watts to operate these speakers. I power these with a Marantz model 250M power amplifier, so there is plenty of headroom.

There is also a Russound Patch Bay. Most of these were purchased in the early 1970s. The CD player in 1985.

    nice video, I also tested the DB level at where i sit while watching a movie, doing all the math with the sensitivity of my speakers and how far i sit ect... i came to the conclusion that for 90% of my listening levels, im probably using less than 6 watts most of the time. Its funny at actually how few watts im probably using and sometimes bigger isn't always better or even needed.

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very true. I like having extra for those big dynamic shifts in content. But for the most part, 10 - 20 watts should do if you have efficient speakers.

    Wattage *is* RMS. "Peak Wattage" is a fictitious number only meant for specsmanship--ignore it.
    Ideally you should have amplifier power that will not clip or distort to a level 3 dB beyond the maximum power rating of your speaker or driver. That way you'll never overheat voice coils with clipping harmonics. This is especially important when using passive crossovers. It's up to you to use peak limiting & compression and/or self control to never exceed safe power / SPL, of course. If you have a teen or other untrained person with access, put the limiters in the chain and make them impossible to defeat. No more blown drivers. MOF for teens, have a secret low setting so it doesn't exceed a lower threshold to save young ears.

    • @jumpercable20
      @jumpercable20 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right StringerNews1, a lot of people don't realize you can destroy a good speaker not by using too much power but by using so little the clipping destroys the speakers. Correct me if I'm wrong but I just don't see how a lot of Best Buy reviewers are returning speakers that handle outrageous amounts of power are saying "they only lasted a week before I blew them out".

    • @StringerNews1
      @StringerNews1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jumpercable20 The industry does a lot of cheating with their numbers, I can't even call it fudging because it's outright dishonest. One common trick is to find ways to generate unusually large voltage pulses in amplifiers that would never happen in real world conditions, take that transient voltage peak and run it through Ohm's law (totally invalid because it's for DC only) to produce a large but completely fake number. Because wattage is a rate, they could have integrated over time to find true power, but the truthful number would not have been something to boast about, of course.
      Speaker manufacturers pull a similar trick by claiming "dynamic power handling" the same way, by picking a transient _voltage_ that the reactance of the speaker will be highly reactive to, and thus conduct little power. But then they apply Ohm's law wrongly and claim a bogus _power_ number that's not right.
      If you have a good ear, some amount of training to recognize the telltale sounds of overdriven electronics and mechanical components and the will to keep your system in its linear zone, you'll never blow anything out. But in that case it's a system completely under your control--one slip and you have permanent damage.
      I started building PA systems back in the 1970s when amplifier power was very costly, and there was never enough. We ran everything at the edge, and it wasn't uncommon for exuberant sound mixers to try to go "one louder" and blow out some or all of the PA in the process. So I started putting peak limiters in the amp racks, where the sound mixers couldn't touch them. The drivers would live through the gig, and sound mixers learned to modulate their volume, keeping something in reserve for the grand finale.
      In industrial systems we rarely have the luxury of getting 3 dB or more of extra power as a cushion, but at home it's a different story. Amplifier power has never been so inexpensive. The cost to double or even quadruple your amplifier power is pretty reasonable compared to all the other costs of a HT setup. And since your HT is not likely to be in the hands of a trained professional sound engineer, that's pretty cheap insurance IMO. I _am_ a trained professional sound engineer, and I'd do it for my own system.

      Hi sir I got most part of your vdo, but I have one serious doubt and its bothering me a lot,so you mentioned a low sensitivity speaker will have around 88db@1w@1mtr,
      91db@2w,
      94db@4w,
      97db@8w,
      100db@16w,
      So the same speaker Will have 6ohm,10watt on the backside,does that mean it will produce 97-100db(lies between 8w-16w from the above chart) at 10watt at 1mtr distance.

      It is actually 85db with 20db Headroom (85 + 20 = 105db). 105db is the peak value, not the average. Also, this is 115db for the Subwoofers, and those level are all at the listening position, not at 1 meter.

    • @bthellam
      @bthellam 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was definitely wondering hard at that 105 dB figure. Too loud for a living room my size. Normal speaking voices are around 60 dB and my voice is big and loud without shouting, so probably 70-80. I think 90-something (less than 100) would be plenty loud in there. Maybe 105 dB peak with all speakers including sub going in the room? (My wife wouldn't tolerate that!)

    Hi, I am trying to learn about home audio. I am not into the home theater scenery, I just like 2 channel audio. I recently bought 2 crowns Xls 1002, and I am waiting for my preamp(saga+ from Schiit’s, equalizer(Art EQ355 Dual-Channel 31-Band Graphic Equalizer, a tuner(Yamaha T-S500
    AM/FM tuner and DAC(MODIUS by Schiit’s)BALANCED DAC. As you can see I have been taking suggestions by many audiophiles and I came up with this setup according to my liking and budget. but I have no idea what I am doing. I am trying to figure out how I am going to put all this together once I get all my items. I have an idea how to start but I can understand how I am going to connect the 4 speakers to the 2 crowns amps each amp has outputs for 2 speakers. I have 1 pair of Klipsch 600, 125watts RMS bookshelves speakers and 1 pair of Klipsch 51, 85 watts RMS bookshelf speakers and I have no idea what I am going to do. I have been thinking to connect 1 Klipsch 600 and Klipsch 51 to one channel and the same to the other what do you think any suggestion will be most appreciated thanks.

    Even more power is needed to get to 105 db at the listening location with actual program material without distortion. Lets say 100 W is needed to get 105 db with a sine wave input. The peak power of typical program material is about 10 db higher than average power. This would increase the required amplifier power to handle the peaks without clipping to be 1000 W.

  • @GucciGamerTV
    @GucciGamerTV 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    OK. So now I’m confused. You corrected yourself and said that THX reference level is actually 85 dBA continuous. And this doesn’t include subwoofer output. So if 85 dBA on the speakers is only needed to achieve reference levels, it looks like no matter the speaker, as long as it’s 86 sensitivity on the chart is using 2 watts or less? Doesn’t seem right.

    Hi Chana, I am from australia and I have been watching your home theatre series and I really like it. I purchased klipsch RP 6000F along with Denon AVC-X3700H for my new soon to be ready house. I am planning for 5.2.4 My room size is about 5mts height 3.4 mts width and 2.7 height. My preferred seating is at 3.5mts. 105dB THX reference level is way too high for me. I would only need 75dB at my seating position. I have few questions. As per your video do you think I would need an external amplifier? As per my calculations each speaker will need less than one watt. Is that correct? So, doI need to do the same calculations for the surround speakers as well?

    just recommend me a good receiver/amplifier with decent power (80 watts or above) that has analog inputs (speakers, phono) and can stream music in high def and isn't the Cambridge audio cxa81 (because I already have that lol) for the KLH Model 5s. Do this and I will forever be grateful, because I literally cannot find any. If its high in watts, it doesnt stream, if it streams, it doesnt have speaker inputs. And if it does everything, its super expensive. My endgame would be the Cambridge Evo if I could afford it.

    I've always found the Klipsch sensitivity ratings hard to believe. Could you do an A/B test with the Klipsch and some other speaker to see how much difference it makes? Use any speaker with a "normal" sensitivity rating of 86 to 90 dB.

I want to use a Denon AVR-S950H 7.2 Channel (185w X 7 ) receiver to push a 5:2:2 speaker setup. Speakers are going to be: FR, CEN, FL Elac IW-DC51 (in-wall) ATOMS and RR and RL Speakers = Elac Debut IC-DT61-W x 2 (in-ceiling) Klipsch R-12SW Subs x 2 From my research, almost everything I read encourages going with a separate power amp for best performance. However, I'm not using big floor standing speakers, will I be okay with the power provided by Denon AVR-s950h? Thanks!

    Good rule of thumb is double a speakers rated rms power. This will give you great dynamic range, good volume output without damaging your speakers. Also 105DB is not loud at all... I have listened to 150DB daily for years, even that is far from loud

    • @phi_b
      @phi_b 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      150db is over the loudness of a plain engine at takeoff. Listening to such a volume without ear protection is extremely dangerous even for small amounts of time. I recommend to anyone not to try that. Protect your hearing everyone!

      @@phi_b im not recomending it but i will honestly tell you ive been doing it daily for a minimum of 20 minutes for over 7 years with no hearing protection and my results from a hearing test last year show that i have perfect hearing for my age.
      I never have to ask someone to repeat themselvs in any environment and in general i hear things that most people just dont hear. I dont think bass is as damaging as higher frequencies... (for home application) if we use an active subwoofer will it still draw power from the amplifier and still have to formulated first or just plug it in into a pairs of the socket (back L & R maybe) since it already have it own power source??

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! So you plug the sub to the subwoofer pre-out on the back of the AVR, you aren't powering the sub from the AVR, it's just sending a signal through an RCA cable. The sub needs to be plugged into power. I explain all that in this video: th-cam.com/video/AkHYDvvX29A/w-d-xo.html

    In the 80s, speakers typical could handle a lot more power then what the average (afordable) amplifier could handle. 200W speakers with 20W amplifiers were not unusual. There are stories of clipping and blown up speakers, but in general this worked becaus you hardly ever in a living room will listen to louder then 90 db. Even at 88db/1w sensitivity, you only need 16 watts to still be over 90db at 3 meter. And 90 db is pretty much as loud as you want it to get for enjoying music ;-)

    You don't need to do the sound test at the full unity dB level. If you can measure the signal level as say, Volts RMS of VU etc, you can convert between standards to reduce the signal by -10 or -20 dB etc and then measure the dB SPL from the speaker which will be the same -10 or -20 dB lower than it will be at unity dB. This is good enough and will not be so stupid loud that you go deaf & become an extremely annoying person to your neighbors & family.
