As an addendum to the cooling: if you don't have your receiver in a cabinet, you should not need a cooler. They are designed to work just fine as is in an open environment. If your receiver is not in a cabinet and it gets so hot as to fail without a cooler on it, then your receiver needs to be repaired.
I agree that cooling is not always 100% necessary but considering how hot receivers can get and the fact that the number one enemy of most electronics is heat, it’s a very small price to pay for peace of mind. Especially considering how much these things cost.
It's worth looking inside to see if there is a fan that's sensor activated already. Mine has one but it's only turned on once, but the amp is normally not pushing too hard
I was aware that my receiver ran very hot but didn't realize a cooling fan solution was so affordable. I just ordered the AC Infinity Aircom T8 Cooling Fan. Thanks for a very informative video.
New subscriber here. Big dittos for all the great comments that have already been posted! You are very easy to understand and provide great information on these easily confusing topics. Keep up the great work!!
Just now coming to the realization that my 5.1 soundbar setup is not satisfactory for me so I began looking into home theater audio. Your videos have been a wealth of knowledge and very easy to follow along and understand. I’ll be watching your video on how to choose a receiver now. Quick question though, how do you know when you do/don’t need an amplifier in addition to your receiver?
Dear Chris you have good teaching> I have been suffering depression for 9 months since we moved in heree the home theature was just too hard to do again while I was unwell. Well i'm better now and your video has helped big time. I got an old Sony STR-KM7000 given it a few years ago by my Son inlaw Anders (he is very helpful for me and his mum) I think I can get it going but want somemore understanding of the surround sound they got only got 4 little speakers for this and Sony says they get two at front and two at back but would it not be better to have them deep back and then beside the cinema chair for flyby sounds? If you can help some more....
Chris thanks for explaining the inputs on the back of the receiver. I’ve always tried to figure out what the IR ports were used for and couldn’t figure it out. Keep up the good work on your videos. I really like your style and presentation.
Chris Majestic, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for your invaluable guidance on setting up a home theater receiver. Your expertise and detailed instructions have transformed the daunting task into an enjoyable experience. Your clear explanations and step-by-step approach made the process seamless, allowing me to maximize the potential of my home entertainment system. Thanks to your insightful videos, I now revel in a superior audiovisual experience. Your dedication to simplifying complex setups is truly commendable, and I am immensely thankful for your contribution to the home theater community.❤
Im 59 yo and recently bought me an Onkyo RZ50 and was blown away by all its features it has. I managed to get it up and running for basic music listening and TV and movie viewing but haven't tapped into the surround sound features like Dirac, etc. It's already a bit over my head, but after rounding up enough speakers, I'll be taking advantage of that for sure. Thanks for your video, albeit you featured Denon. There are close similarities.
How's it goin Man? I'm 51 myself, I've been buying only Onkyo since about 18 in my first appartment... But i just got the RZ50 Too, back in May... This thing sounds Pretty Tits!!! Now I'm waiting on a pair of Cerwin Vega XLS 215's. Dual 15" woofers 3 way towers. I Can't Friggen wait Bud!!! Right now i have the old CV CLS 15's, they still sound Nice 👌 Good ta see another Gen Xr Rockin an Onkyo 👍👍 I still have a few of my old ones ( Onkyo Receivers ) back in their original boxes, just Retired is all....HaHa. The favorite of my oldies is my TX DS989... The Heaviest Amp I've ever owned!! GREAT DAY!!! JB
Oh Yeah, of course right after i bought the new RZ50, a week or so later i saw an advert for the RZ70..... Oh well, The 50 probly doesn't sound $1,000. Worse....No Way
Great video! I'm getting my new receiver tomorrow, and I'll be setting it up with my Pioneer CS-63DX Speakers that I bought 50 years ago. They still sound great!
Great explanation! I'd love for you to do one on the quirks of OSD (On Screen Displays) since in my experience, while they should be easy peasy, they aren't! Just getting them to work on some newer receivers can mean sorting out HDMI resolutions, with an impact on the ability to use ARC for audio. Keep up the good work!
What a great video! Thanks Chris! This would have even been helpful in 1989 when I bought my first Denon and a pair of KG-4s (yes, I still have the Klipsch). Getting a receiver hooked up correctly is not as intuitive as it once was. Your help is invaluable, and much appreciated.
Thank you, one piece of advice if having CEC issues as I did with my AVR-X3700H and my Sony X90K Tv is to remove all other HDMI cables from the receiver and TV, run just the 1 HDMI cable from eARC port #3 from the TV to the eARC port on the receiver, run the Denon Assist or set up HDMI Control and ARC. Then hopefully if the HDMI cable is good you should be able to shut off and turn on both with one remote. Then work the HDMI cables back into the receiver one at time and test that it changes sources and again shut off and turn on without issues. I found my old Wii U HDMI cable to be the culprit on why it wasn't working.
I just noticed your comment on this video and tried that approach on my Denon receiver and it solved a problem I was having. Thanks, one question if you have the time, I am currently running most of my components, like blue ray, PC and cable box off the HDMI connections on my Samsung s90c which is working well with all my components showing up on the Samsung screen and easily selected as needed. The question I have can I mix HDMI connections with some components using hdmi on the Denon HDMIs and other components directly to the Samsung TV HDMIs? If this works then the total HDMI inputs is increased from the total on the Samsung TV.
Great stuff right here. It’s been a while since I put a home theater set up together. My last one was about 10-12 years ago. Videos like this are a great refresher. Working on new set up now. I appreciate the time you take to explain everything.
Interesting... How do you like your "Marantz?" They seem very high end. I have no experience with any of these AV Companies. The 3 I heard most of were Denon, Yamaha, and Sony, so good to hear there are other reputable brands. Thank you for your time.
Just found your channel. I have the Yamaha RX-V861. I have if plugged into a Sansung. Put new cones if on 901 speaker set or rear surround, The Bose Larger cube speakers over recliners and Bose 901’s at front with a 500 watt sub. I bought all this stuff around 2000. I tried the Denon 95 x7 stereo and it will just overheat and shut off. I seen your cooler. My receiver when I used to play it was at the bottom of case and all the components on top. The older units were built with bigger heat sink. You video was great timing I went and bought this unit one opener. For people that like Bose and like to crank up I can up looking at new stuff that gets expense or trying different speakers.
I've been told to ask people questions I already know the answers to so I can tell who is an idiot or not. You sir are not an idiot. Good clear and concise video. Keep up the good work.
WOW! Just an AWESOME VIDEO explaining everything on a home theater receiver, GREAT JOB! Thank YOU so much for taking the time to do this and share it! PLEASE stay healthy and safe out there!
Chris, excellent video. I'm a long time subscriber and know you for AV & Home Routers but I was amazed to see your Home Lab complete with Home Assistant. You should seriously add videos about these other areas. For example, I would love to know what integrations you have with Home Assistant and your AV equipment or how your Home Lab works with your AV equipment or just even your Home Lab set up itself. Looking at your rack gave me some ideas for my own (the Tripp Lite Console). You've got a ton more really great content just waiting!!!
Thanks. I've really considering doing some content on HA as well as home automation in general but I wasn't sure if anyone would be interested. I'm honestly more into home automation that I am home theater these days. I have a TON of automations setup in NodeRed. Thanks for your suggestion and thanks for subscribing!
Chris Nice job, I would also recommend using the receive for those old lower resolution devices before outputting them to the tv to upconvert from lower resolutions to 4k, its a great improvement over native 480 to a 4k tv.
Thank you for the explanation! My dad sent me this video as help for setting up my first receiver (Yamaha RX-V4A). I have a pretty simple setup, but I appreciated the walkthrough of all the different ports and subsections.
Great guidance. Unfortunately when my late audiophile and HT fan husband set it up, we never talked about multiple subs and how they were calibrated. I just replaced our receiver and I get stuck in the auto-calibration. I also live in an old house, great plaster walls, not wallboard. It's a real interesting situation, but these videos help sometimes, and they're well done!
4:45 Also one of the most useful aspects of ARC (imo) is being able to control the volume of your AV with, say, a Roku remote. My living room Roku can only control my TV but with ARC, the volume on the Roku remote controls the AV volume. It'll also allow the TV power button to turn the AV on/off with the TV power button. SOOOOOOOO handy for simplicity.

Hello Chris, I’m so so glad I watched this video, you have taken me way back to one of my first loves! I’m motivated now to get back into HT. Thank you Thank you Thank you so much my man, watching this made me feel like a kid in a candy store 🎉
I've just started learning, but this is valuable information! Just came from your helpful screen guide. Will be searching your library for a universal remote guide and a general getting started guide too! Thanks for the great content. -Tony
Great content as always Chris, would love to see more receiver content, particularly like a shootout of sorts at $500, $1000, $2000, $5000(?). I'm not big into receiver tech so aside from checking basic boxes of ability to push 4k 60 I'm not sure what's worth paying more for as you progress the ladder
Simplest way to think of it is that it makes it so that you send limited bass to your speakers and let your subwoofers handle it since that’s what it’s there for
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the crossover value you set, you are telling that speaker not to go under that hz range. And that that range and lower is for the stand-alone subwoofer.
I’m converting an old 1950 built brass display cabinet with 2 smoked glass doors and wooden sides and chipboard back, which is 2 metre tall. Its width is perfect for my Marantz equipment. It has glass glass shelves to house 6 spaces. My dilemma lies with the best place to house my AV system, it is deeper than the other equipment and I need to cut out a significant size of hole out the back of the cabinet to feed the wires. I don’t fancy sitting it on the bottom of my cabinet, and I don’t want it to interfere too much with the air circulation. Also I don’t know if using the roof to exhaust the air would be best. With the glass shelving not having any vents almost tight to the sides and back and only a small gap from top to bottom when the doors are closed, Any advice would be appreciated before I make any cuts I would regret. Thanks
Excellent information! I'm running an Onkyo with 5.(forced)2 setup. I built my cabinate purposefully with an open top so the receiver gets all the airflow it needs. No heat issues at all. Hope you and your family have wonderful Chistmas holiday!
I’m a complete newb & found this channel- dope page! My living room is wired for 7 ceiling speakers and time to make use! Anyone have recommendations to start me on my path?
PERFECT timing! Buiding my first home theater now and have the Denon 3800 ready to go! Thanks for the review, I think I'm ready. Didn't know much about Crossover.... hopefully Audyssey and Denon will step me through it.
Hi Chris I’m hoping you could answer a question for me, I’m wondering is there a way to send what I’m viewing on a television through the av receiver so that I can put it on my projector, very new to this, I had hoped this was possible via hdmi but having no luck so far, Barry
Amazing video thanks if you do have a chance please do a video on how to get better bass from your subwoofers specially svs I run a svs 16 ultra pb thanks.
Great explanation as always. I have been growing my HT for about 20 years now and since so much has changed since I start it is always nice to see how so much has stayed the same. makes for the older tech to still be used and not have to upgrade everything all at once. I think next year might be my push for a better receiver get an amp, and then breakdown and get a better sub. might be next year some dual SVS big boys when they go on sale again HAHA. anyway keep up the fun vids cheers.
This was a great video. Im looking at building a theater system at home and stumbled across a Denon AVR-X2200W on Marketplace, did some youtubing, and found you. Thanks for the info looking to build a nice multi-room situation for the low. Any suggestions....
Hey Chris, great channel. I have a question about older receivers. I got an older denon 7.1 receiver coming my way that supports up to dolby true HD. Now my question is if it's worth putting it in 5.1.2 with upfiring or sealing speakers or if I am better lf putti'g the speakers in a 7.1 configuration. I do wa't to upgrade kn the future but for now that's all I can afford but I do watch blu rays all the time so what would be my best pick, 5.1.2 or 7.1.
Thanks Chris - such a clear explanation. Stupid newbie question (just got my first AVR denon 3800h) and wondering can you do a wireless solution to the home theater or it must be wired. I can do wireless for the 550 sound bar (tv) but when I used the AVR no sound because the home theater speakers (soundbar, sub woofer, 2 speakers) I guess are not connected. Any insights would be useful before I get the wires which I would prefer not to do….
Your home network looks like mine. I am the Director of Information Technology. I have been doing HT for 30 years and IT for 24. My home backbone is 10G, and my HT is Matranzt Separates. Built about 3 years ago and the first time, leaving receivers.
I’m new to avr. What if I want to play 2.1 channel stereo music. Do avr automatically recognize the input is 2.1 and there for only output to 2.1 or r do I have to push a button to select that when I want that?

Have you done a video on electrical setup? I've just built a 6x12 shed (6x6 for theatre, the other 6x6 for a pool table and what not) and am about to wire it up. My end-game (years away) would be to have something similar to your mate's KRIX MX20 system with everything that goes along with it. Should I be running 10, 15 or 20 amps and where should I place all my power points.
Awesome content! So, I'm replacing my 79 watt Denon 5.2 S670BT with a90 watt S970H 7.2 so I can use my recently acquired Polk ES90 height speakers but the S970H doesn't have a Height Speaker labeled channel. Instead it has an assignable Surround Speaker. I can only assume the set-up menu will allow me to assign, or repurpose that channel for height speakers, amirite?
Great video bro. I got a Denon S-760 for my living room. I have 5.1 setup and I have two outdoor speakers. Is there a way to setup to play music just for those two outdoor speakers? Thanks I can't find anything on this. Appreciate all the info on all the videos you put out.
Hey Chris, great video as always! I actually have the exact same receiver as you and I was wondering if you could do a video or explain to me how to choose the correct audio. There are so many options and variations and I just want to make sure I am getting the best and purest sound from my sources! It’s overwhelming with options like music, direct, movie, game, pure, X etc. Thanks again and happy holidays!
Could you recommend a karaoke setting with AV receiver? I already have the mics, so I’m looking to replace my old home theater to include karaoke… much appreciated!
Chris… love ur vids! I have a question… why don’t companies make 4K Blu-ray home theater systems like they did with 3D blu-ray? I have a budget theater room with a 4K projector and I’d love to have everything integrated
I bought an open box STR DH590 that didn't have a microphone for calibration included. What might you suggest I do to solve this? It also didn't include a remote, so if you have a universal remote suggestion, I'm all ears!
Thanks for the video! How loud are those fans? Just curious since I don't have a dedicated AV closet and instead opted for an AV media cabinet from BDI and would have this in my theater room. Not noticing any heat issues with my Onkyo RZ50 or my TW 8300 but I want them to live a long life.
As an addendum to the cooling: if you don't have your receiver in a cabinet, you should not need a cooler. They are designed to work just fine as is in an open environment. I live in Arizona wish we had a way to keep dust getting in the vents
Honestly, even some new receivers (usually, but not exclusively cheaper ones) are running so warm that I recommend using a fan for longevity
I would never have thought about a cooling fan but it is something I’ll consider now. Hoping to get an AV receiver soon
It's worth looking inside to see if there is a fan that's sensor activated already. Mine has one but it's only turned on once, but the amp is normally not pushing too hard

Excellent information! I'm running an Onkyo with 5.(forced)2 setup. I built my cabinate purposefully with an open top so the receiver gets all the airflow it needs. No heat issues at all.
Hope you and your family have wonderful Chistmas holiday!
Thanks! You and your family have a wonderful Christmas as well.
Great video. Short and to the point. Not overwhelming with technical jargon.
Thanks Chris - This was really well done! Merry Christmas to you!
That is so helpful. Really well explained and illustrated. Thank you and now go and have a Christmas break! All the best.
Hell yea! Let me know if you have any questions?
Great video. The graphics are first rate. Nicely done, bravo!
What a well done video. I had to subscribe. Thank you for the work you put into this.
Hi Chris
I’m hoping you could answer a question for me, I’m wondering is there a way to send what I’m viewing on a television through the av receiver so that I can put it on my projector, very new to this, I had hoped this was possible via hdmi but having no luck so far,
Barry
Thanks for demystifying all of this and making it so accessible. You definitely got my sub and likes
First time I’ve seen your channel. Liked and subbed! Well explained in a concise and clear manner. Thank you.
HDCP. You cleared up a problem I was having with this. Thank you?
Very good video. Could you talk a bit more about the software, how can I use those softwares and how do those work together with the receiver?
It's been awhile since I seen your content. It is also nice to get back to the basic.
Chris thank you. I absolutely learned some things that I didn't know today.
Chris great video,very informative. Thanks.
Merry Christmas, Chris!
Thanks! Merry Christmas to you and your family as well.
Good one. I have not seen the AC infinity Aircom before. I have their 2x fans but this is nice.
Great video 💯! Question: can an old receiver be used as a amp? Pre-out?
Mate -- Awesome video -- Thank you --- very informative
New subscriber. This was a very helpful and succinct video! Thank you!
Are you able to see and switch receiver inputs from the TV via cec?
This video answered sooo many questions. Thank you.
Your home network looks like mine. I am the Director of Information Technology. I have been doing HT for 30 years and IT for 24. My home backbone is 10G, and my HT is Matranzt Separates. Built about 3 years ago and the first time, leaving receivers.
“Matranxt?”
Is that a Chinese version of Marantz?
Great, informative video my friend. Thank you for sharing the knowledge.
What do you recommend for an home theater power distribution unit? Thanks
I have a denon 5.1, but I feel I’m not getting the full affect of the theatre experience. Maybe a 6 on a scale of 10. Any suggestions?
I’m new to avr. What if I want to play 2.1 channel stereo music. Do avr automatically recognize the input is 2.1 and there for only output to 2.1 or r do I have to push a button to select that when I want that?
please make a video guide on how to combine two UST projectors and using a external video processor that can do image blending and tilling to create a cinemascope image. Also a video guide on if it's possible to use 3rd party mapping grid geometry software to correct a UST image thats projected on a wall that's not flat
Yo Chris happy holidays 😊
Thanks! Happy Holidays to you as well!
Nice video, clear and informative nice job young man
Awesome content!
Thanks so much for the video.
Hi Chris, I like your sight! do you have a video on crossovers? I’m fascinated about that. Thanks.
Hey Chris you never mention if it's possible for PC to be hooked up to the receiver if or not it can be done and if so which way would you wire it🙂
Great video bro. I got a Denon S-760 for my living room. I have 5.1 setup and I have two outdoor speakers. Is there a way to setup to play music just for those two outdoor speakers? Thanks I can't find anything on this. Appreciate all the info on all the videos you put out.
Really good video, helpful.
You did a lot in a little time. Great work.
I'm still waiting for a solution to add/remove HDMI cables without scratching the back of the receiver 😉
Thanks for the video, Chris
I didn’t realize it was so bad 😂😂😂
This 100% comes from me blindly plugging in cables lol.
Thank you Sir. Very informative.
Dope video my brother.
They are very quiet. Especially at low speed
What if you used an hdmi splitter from the receiver output? Would it play on multiple screens?
