Hey Paul, I like that stove a lot. I have found you'll get a better burn time if you cut the alcohol tablet in half and burn one half at a time. Cheers, friend!

I thought everyone knew, that really Branston beans are the very best baked beans! 😆Good job you're doing there, yummy. I have always enjoyed doing a good fry up on an alcohol stove. Better than gas.

Hi Paul, I live on a canal boat and over the last few years because Calor Gas has rocketed in price I went on EBay and bid on a couple of old non working Primus stoves, after stripping cleaning and replacing seals and washers I now use them for cooking off and boiling kettle.. you can’t beat simple technology and being solid brass they’ll last for years! Great video mate 👍🏻🇬🇧

When you need to keep stuff warm while cooking other bits just wrap the stuff you need to keep in a bit of old mylar blanket and it stays hot.

Hexamine is illegal now because, according to the UK govt, it's a precursor for explosives. Can't say I miss it, my experience of being on excercise in the army is that all your food reeks, and tastes, of it.

I used to hate the smell, and taste, of hexy in the morning. Ruined many a can of that bacon spam stuff the used to issue in the rat packs. Hell, even the coffee would taste of hexy.

Hexamine is easily available in Europe for the standard Esbit stove. Banning it is stupid, you can make it at home (it is made from formaldehyde and ammonia which are easy to get hold of. It is then converted to RDX and other explosives using white fuming nitric acid which is going to be a bit more difficult to find.

  • @SeanHendy

As an emergency stove, the BCB stove (others are available) which has firedragon fuel (worth checking out the other fueldragon products), is a decent option.
Having served in the '90s and '00s, the old hexamine stove was the main stove we used as it is what was issued, and it was FREE, always a good option when you don't have to pay for it.
With the old cold war 'compo' rations, we only ever used the stove, and mess tins, as a 'bain marie', i.e. a hot water bath, with the opened tins of food, sitting in the water. When the food was hot, eat it, and the hot water was for your brew.
When the new rations came in, about the mid 90's, and the food was in pouches, we just did the same. Pouches went in the water, and the water at the end was your brew.
This way there was never any clean up needed. Food was eaten straight from the tin or pouch.
As for hexamine being illegal, as of October last year, and having lived under the threat of nasty things being done by nasty people most of my life, as a kid growing up in Germany etc, and work in NI as an adult for many years, the mind boggles as to how hexamine suddenly became a threat last year requiring a change in law, after some 40+ years of it being used literally everywhere by the truck load, and plenty of other options being used by nasty people to do nasty things. Smacks of an overreach to be honest.
Final point, I left in 2006, but I am aware that a flameless ration heater was part of the operational rations at some point since, but I don't know which is currently issued/used, and in which a solid fuel cooker is still in use.

Takes a good while to cook anything (especially if there is any wind), but if you're in a rush when camping I think you're doing it wrong.
But it is super lightweight and does the job I need it to.

Paul, you might be interested in seeking out an Army number 12 cooker, which is a bit of a classic. Not intended to be man portable, but used by many an army chef, it is bomb proof, and has been in service for decades, using a well tested principle (evaporates liquid fuel into gas) and is usually multi fuel. Great for camping, car camping etc.

    👍👍👍 .. nice 😊.
I've had many a fry-up on an Esbit Folder. I keep the already-cooked stuff warm by using a set of 'Dixies' (Mess Tins) over a home-made folding Tripod, as a 'Bain Marie'.
I no longer use the Hexamine / Esbit Tablets due to here in Switzerland, they are quite pricy and only obtainable at Outdoor Stores. Alcohol Fuel or Alcohol Gel is cheaper and are my go-to's .. and I can get them down the road at my local Supermarket .. or any Supermarket at that.
    Hash Browns? 😳 .. they're good too 😁.

I've had folding stoves of this type since I was a kid. Only used it a handful of times, carried as a backup really. My fuel tablets were never hexamine though, which is renowned for being foul. Difficult to get high enough heat on one of these to properly fry egg, I lay my little cook pot over eggs in the pan. The real discussion here is the breakfast! Agree black pudding absolutely essential or it isn't a Full English. Baked beans I always heat in a frying pan so the sauce can be spread out and reduced down nice and thick; if only warmed in a saucepan it remains thin and watery. Missing a fried tomato in there, Paul. And where do you stand on potato cake?

Great breakfast. English/Scottish breakfasts/feasts simply rule.
When hiking distances, they are such a treat in comparison with the usual oatmeal breakfast.
Issue with the original Esbit fuel tablets, is they are made from hexamine.
Besides the toxic fumes at burn (Wikipedia; "...combustion can create formaldehyde, ammonia, nitrogen oxide, hydrogen cyanide"), it is also a precursor for the explosive RDX (think military grade C4 explosives).
Travelling with a small amount abroad through customs, with the tablets still packaged, will likely not cause any issue.
Unpackaged or residue on a backpack, might raise eyebrows at customs, if some chemical analysis swipe produces the result; ''Bomb chemical''
Customs will likely have further questions.
