This camping trip was carried out on our private permission. The landowner provides the drum for off the ground fires too. Ground fires are not allowed here. The use of knives axes etc is perfectly legal for this kind of activity on private property. I would not carry an axe in public woodland. It’s going to be very difficult to provide a genuine reason for use then.
I have the exact same Trangia set up - I've actually returned to it after many years of trying other options. If all you do is boil water then there are better solutions, but for actual cooking, I think the Trangia is hard to beat. Tip on the seasoning: Do it at home in a hot oven. Spread a high smoking temperature oil like flax, or sunflower oil at a pinch, evenly over the inside surface, wait ten minutes or so and the wipe most of it off until it's almost dry. Stick it in a hot oven for an hour or so, remove and let it cool completely. Repeat this four or five times and you will end up with an even, very dark brown/ black layer that is as good a non stick surface as you'll find anywhere.
What an amazing video, my friend! Nice camping! The nature is amazing.. Enjoyed watching. Cheers from Russia Paul , and welcome to my channel about bushcraft! Kind regards, Yuriy!
Speaking as a chef, you are better to season your pan with vinegar, baking soda and water and boil for ten minutes at home then oil it and place in an oven at around 160 for an hour. What you have done there is congeal the the oil hence the dark colouring. Another good idea when cooking is to use clarified butter rather than oil. It’s healthier and tastier and does not burn. To clarify butter you simply melt it and skim of the clear fats leaving the milk solids at the bottom and discarding, eggs cooked in this is amazing on a slow cook 👍🏻
Hi Paul, great video as always! For the non stick surface it’s best to do it in an oven at home first. Also when you apply the oil you have to wipe away almost all of the oil or it will leave a sticky layer on top and won’t be non stick. Same as a stainless steel pan used in kitchens.
Damn you Messner! I'd had my dinner yet STILL got hungry looking at all that food. Another great video, and that stove looks a good bit of kit. Thanks for making and sharing.
I really enjoyed this video as personally I prefere the more survival esk tarp kind of set ups! But obvs still like the usual videos and like the van conversions!
The a storm trangia is my go to stove for winter and longer stays, used them since I was a kid when junior school used to used them on our trips out camping, they are heavy by modern standards but I love them so much.
I was afraid to click on the video... cause every time even if my stomach is full, you always give me a relaxing mood and an appetite and I want to eat more! lol :)
Put washing up liquid on the bottom of your pans before use it stops the soot from sticking and it makes it easier to clean. Or get the gas burner for it.
Another cracking video, bought a Trangia 6 months ago but yet to use it, after watching this will give it a try on my next outing, thanks for sharing 👍
Another great camping video Paul, love the new stove too. All that tucker was making me drool 🤤 lol. Your camping gear looks great as usual. Cheers from Down Under.
Been a subscriber since the early days, always enjoyed your content - your content just gets increasing good and well filmed, I also appreciate the change up in landscape in this episode (although all your video locations are great )
To season, coat with a thin layer of rapeseed or higher temperature oil, wipe of excess with kitchen towel and bake in the oven for 20 minutes at a medium heat. Repeat 2 or 3 times
I was watching this at breakfast time this morning.. think i now need a bap with bacon, egg, black pudding and a sausage… mmm Thanks for sharing Paul… cheers Mark
Class Paul setup brilliant, location brilliant, as for the food yip brilliant, something a bit different that sleeping mat looked comfy aswell all the best marra stay safe 👌 #leavenotrace
You used a couple of items I know quite well. I used a Trangia # 27 on a lot of canoe trips over a lot of years. 1st time I got laughed at and as the trips passed more and more of the guy's had the same stove. I got the last laugh at them when the finally woke up and got theirs. I like to use a lower flame when cooking , the simmer ring works wonders. One other item that's been with me even longer is the UCO Candle lantern. Mine is the Brass one and unlike yours I have to unscrew the bottom to remove the candle holder to light the wick , then reinsert it. Might ever call mine a dinosaur , age wise.
Was great to see you out doing something bushcraft ish again mate, I try and mix it up myself with camping and bushcraft. I suffer from gout and its bloody painful... Love the trangia it was one of my best purchases.. Great watch mate thanks for sharing... take care 👍🏻👌🏻
Ooh, was just out in this bivy this weekend. Also brought the sea to summit 15D poncho tarp but ended up not using it. I think its a great setup! I keep my sleeping pad inside and roll it up like a cowboy roll and strap it under my pack. Saves tons of space and is super simple to set up/roll up. Now in the summer heat i recon i will use the hammock or tent though..! Great video as always.
Good video mate, great to see a bit of bushcraft skills being practiced. As for the inane comment regarding carrying an axe and knife, I've set that one straight...... You're perfectly entitled to carry an axe in a public place providing you have a reasonable excuse - in this video, camping - zero questions. Same goes for the knife........ Glad to see the agitators out as per. ATB mate
Great vid. One small point: the Hard Anodized (HA) Trangia frying pan isn’t non-stick like Teflon, it’s just a bit less sticky than standard aluminium. The eggs are probably going to stick a bit no matter what, and you can’t really season a HA pan. Unlike cast iron or standard alu, the HA surface has almost no holes - it’s not porous, so the baked oil isn’t really going to do the job. My advice: get the non-stick frying pan. It’s so much easier to use.
The bivi might no tbe the most stealthy of colours but what about the air pad? Not to mention the shopping bags, the oil drum fire, white light and noise discipline 😊
You certainly eat well on camp Paul. Makes my adventure food look like something I’ve just found in the bin ( which is probably not far from the truth!) 😆
Nice little camp there Paul. The Trangia lid pans are crap as a frying pan, they're just too thin. The Trangia 22cm frypan however is much better as it's made from thicker material, and machined. Cheaper than the Jetboil ones too. I've had mine a while and wouldn't be without it.
Hey up Paul. Great vid. Enjoyed seeing some woodsman skills being used as well 👍 What are those little coffee pod things you used mate? Looked cool those. Regards.
I so want a HA but I found a pretty clean used 27-2 for £25 yesterday on eBay and I couldn't resist mainly because I jacked up my foot of the limestone way last week and it'll give me something to do/polish up while I finish healing up, should be a touch lighter than my trusty old Optimus no 96 too lol
Dad camping! Love it :-) Now, to season your pan - if it isn't a non-stick already, you can do it just like in your video, but use lard, not veg oil. Veg oil can work, but goes past smoke point and burns too easily. The pan does look like it is non-stick already though?
non stick pans are rubbish, I enjoyed watching your video. have you finished doing your motor home yet, I don't always get my notifications on here. your food 😋
"Cheers and alcohol...." haha..mate..that camp looked like it was mint.. the new Trangia was almost as tasty looking as the steaks eh..?! Cheers for putting the vid together..🍺🍺
That pan doesn't look like their non-stick version though... I also use Trangia but never for frying. Wanted to try their non-stick pan for I while, but you have to buy that one extra to the plain set, I believe...
This wasn’t the non stick pan. I do have one of those though. This was the hard anodised one. I just tried to season it using the hot oil method. Had success with a cast iron pan before but this didn’t work too well
@@PaulMessner Yeah, I'm not sure this works so well... I had a copper pan once and I just had to use a 💩 ton of oil for everything... Have you tried the non-stick though? Is it worth it iyo?
Is that knife and axe legal to carry in the UK? I thought you could only have stuff like that if you were on private property?
Shhhh! He's fine as long as no Bobby sees it on the internet. Lol. 😉
Believe it or not it's legal to carry an axe around. Not a 4 inch knife though...
He has a "valid reason" to carry it.
This camping trip was carried out on our private permission. The landowner provides the drum for off the ground fires too. Ground fires are not allowed here. The use of knives axes etc is perfectly legal for this kind of activity on private property. I would not carry an axe in public woodland. Oh better report him to the authorities hadn't you !!

These are the videos I enjoy..a nice campground and a great meal in the woodland
Rick was one of our leaders when i was an Adventure Scout (prob nearly 20 years ago) Great guy, loads of knowledge.
He's forgotten more than I know
🤣😂 mad
More of these please Paul bivvy camping rocks!
Leave no trace!!
Was just thinking to myself “gee, I wish Paul would upload another vid soon” 2 mins later Paul came through with the goods 😂👍🏻
What an amazing video, my friend! Nice camping! The nature is amazing.. Enjoyed watching. Cheers from Russia Paul , and welcome to my channel about bushcraft! Kind regards, Yuriy!
That bivvi’s great! Such a tiny pack size. Really good seeing you out with friends

Love the Trangia. I have two that we take on family camping holidays. Great bit of kit. 👍
Love forest camping and cooking on the fire. Great vid Paul👍
That was a proper boys breakfast roll, food of the Gods!
Great video really enjoyed it. I love Bivi camping there's nothing quite like it. Thank you Paul.
"If you see me walking a bit funny in the next video...it's because I've got gout."
I'm going to be laughing at that for days! Comedy gold!
Hi Paul, great video as always! For the non stick surface it’s best to do it in an oven at home first. Also when you apply the oil you have to wipe away almost all of the oil or it will leave a sticky layer on top and won’t be non stick. Same as a stainless steel pan used in kitchens.
Steak for dinner, and sausages / bacon / black pudding / egg / mushroom bap for breakfast....LOVE IT! Trangia looked good too.
Nice to see you in the woodland, Mr. M. I'm more into the woodland stuff than trails etc. So was chuffed to see this.
ATB pal.
The Trangia set-up is definitely hard to beat. I sometimes use a Svea in a Trangia triangle for a quick cuppa on the go. Another great video, Mr M! 👍🏻
Your buddies @ 5:06 had that look of “dammit, again with the recording” LOL cool video.
love the Trangia set, works a treat however had the same problem with the egg pan! love your videos and hope to see more!
Great video camping in a quiet woods with your mates enjoyed watching your videos thank for sharing.
Paul the camping Legend!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Damn you Messner! I'd had my dinner yet STILL got hungry looking at all that food.
Another great video, and that stove looks a good bit of kit. Thanks for making and sharing.
I dunno what it is but outdoors cooking is just the best. I got myself a ridge monkey for my motorbike camping and done a satisfying toad in the hole
Great video Paul, enjoyed that. The new bivi looks excellent. Cheers mate, Si
Another great video Paul. Ps it was good to see you going back to basics again. Keep them coming mate.
Love the coffee pod idea , never thought of doing it that way ,thanks
What is this coffee pod idea? I need to know because it looked delicious
I really enjoyed this video as personally I prefere the more survival esk tarp kind of set ups! But obvs still like the usual videos and like the van conversions!
Great to see a bit of bushcraft
Love to see some more bushcraft stuff Paul, keep it up :)
The a storm trangia is my go to stove for winter and longer stays, used them since I was a kid when junior school used to used them on our trips out camping, they are heavy by modern standards but I love them so much.
good to see you go back to old skills
Anodized Trangia must have cost a pretty penny
What a wonderful cook set
That b'fast made my mouth water and I'm a veggie. I love my trangia even more than ever now it's a bit used. Another great video Paul, many thanks...
Aw stooooooop I watched it at 230 AM 🤤😂😂👍👍
I was afraid to click on the video... cause every time even if my stomach is full, you always give me a relaxing mood and an appetite and I want to eat more! lol :)
Same here. Not long put a Cornish Pasty in the oven... :D
Put washing up liquid on the bottom of your pans before use it stops the soot from sticking and it makes it easier to clean. Or get the gas burner for it.
Paul Messner bushcrafting! I love it.
Oooh a bit o’bushcraft. Nice day for it 👍🏼
Very nice camp Paul. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers
Another cracking video, bought a Trangia 6 months ago but yet to use it, after watching this will give it a try on my next outing, thanks for sharing 👍

Great video, only thing missing is Paul in Ray Mears short shorts!
The hack seriously of mears's shorts, they dug em out only for dick Attenborough in jurassic dinosaurs that weren't as old as him
That looked like a great camping trip. The new Trangia is cool but the old one has more character. 😃
Great little camp .,....but did I miss the vegetable shot !
Cor…look at all that lovely grub!
You certainly eat well on camp Paul. Makes my adventure food look like something I’ve just found in the bin ( which is probably not far from the truth!) 😆
6:36 "So if you see me walking funny in the next video....." 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 Things not to say around a campfire with the Lads after drinking LOL

I didn't get a notification for this, what a pleasant surprise :)
Looks like you were ready to slay some vampires with those stakes.
12:28 - You just knew that his sandwich was going to explode, LOL.
Nice to see you doing a set up
like this. I know you’re no stranger to wood camps tho - I’ve seen some of those early vids of yours. Nice one Paul👍🏻
Nice to see you out of a tent 😁
Great Vid Paul - those sausages look soooo good!!
I've watched this a couple of times, and still get annoyed that Paul doesn't show us how to do the knot hahaha.
Hey up Paul. Great vid. Enjoyed seeing some woodsman skills being used as well 👍
What are those little coffee pod things you used mate? Looked cool those. Regards.
I'm going to have to travel to your beautiful country and go wild camping Paul, just so I can try those coffee pods. No Tesco for 8000 km
Nice camp Paul 👍 breakfast of champions 😋 can't beat a sausage and egg bap!

your food 😋
Another enjoyable video, I’d like to see a film round your kit store one day……must be huge! Was that a 27 or 25 Trangia you were using?
Great video Paul! Always wondered, what do you do with the dirty pans for the trip home? How do you pack them away/clean them on the campsite? Thanks
Need a bacon 🥓 egg 🍳 and black pudding roll after watching this! 😋😝👍
"Cheers and alcohol...." haha..mate..that camp looked like it was mint.. the new Trangia was almost as tasty looking as the steaks eh..?! Cheers for putting the vid together..🍺🍺
