That, and about the 3 G's he pulled with each turn banked over at about 90 degrees. Being able to fly like that, while wounded and bleeding. Then landing an overloaded and overspeed jet, it's nothing short of amazing. Truth is stranger than fiction.
Kira 123 absolutely I changed it to “processionals” instead of “men”. What’s wrong with me? Of course there are women pilots!! Thx for calling me out. Yay to your daughter 💜 🛩🚀🚁🛸
@@Powerduo88 Some dumbass always has to find a way to make it about them. _Hurrr durrrr you said men but I'm a woman so I'm offended even though there were literally no women in this entire video._ Fuck off.
I know I shouldn't, but I chuckled a bit at the part where Captain Tucker puts the plane on autopilot so that he can go back there and help kick Calloway's ass. Three absolute legends, Hollywood needs to take notice.
"Rolling the plane more than 140 degrees in such speed and recover it from that angle is almost impossible, but he did it'' A comment made by a friend of mine who works as an Engineer.
I was thinking the same... In that moment I was like... And that's when the plane breaks and they all died, look at the year, this is not some fancy Airbus with censors everywhere limiting his bank angle or taking control of the engine, he is just hoping the plane holds together. Cheers to the engineers that made that plane
9:52 - "Captain Sanders can hear the fighting escalate and decides that killing Calloway is the best choice" I got really excited because I thought that was going to happen.
Very underrated comment. Calloway deserved every bit of trauma those pilots dished out on him to save that plane. While I don't like wishing someone to be dead, he would've definitely deserved it for trying to kill those pilots
There's badass, then there's landing a big ass jet while being struck in the head with a hammer and fighting someone. I couldn't imagine what they must've gone through.
Not only landing it while fighting but landing it HALF paralyzed and performing one of the tightest maneuvers to make it happen while the plane is heavier then it should be making it even harder to control.
@@TheFormerTeam Not only landing while fighting and half paralyzed, but also recovering from extreme bankings, plane being upside down and then nose diving at the same time. It felt like I was watching damn superhero movie.
As i sit here, doing further research, i can confirm this plane is still in service. I just tracked it as a matter of fact and it landed 48 minutes ago in san antonia texas, and crazy enough, it was flying from memphis tn.
Apparently they did over 1 million in repairs, updates, cleaning, and renovation on that jet. It’s a 2 pilot plane now, no flight engineer required now. Apparently blood was EVERYWHERE.
@Sabrina Dugan Don't know what you're talking about there. There are plenty of documented cases of predators killing for thrill, and don't you even get me *started* on the species out there that *sexually assault* eachother.
Hands down one of the most riveting videos I’ve ever seen on TH-cam. The skill and bravery of the crew of this plane is remarkable. As for the coward who tried to fake his suicide while killing many innocent people, may he rot in prison.
ddoyle11 'riveting' is the word alright. This whole action, fight for survival no less, by the absolutely courageous crew whilst trying to fly their aircraft whilst severely wounded and disoriented, is, depicted here, more riveting than the cable car scene in Where Eagles Dare, that 1968 movie. I guess as I watched this, absorbed as I was, I imagined the struggle on board to be not dissimilar at all to that movie scene in terms of the desperation and the space whilst 'high up'. Who needs a Richard Burton or a Clint Eastwood? Your neighbour could be a walking hero, ready to respond tomorrow. Ugh! I hope I have not trivialised the experience of the crew here by describing it so. The fact is a great evil was imposed upon them but they overcame it; they surmounted it. And maybe the perpetrator will before his time realise the harm and cruelty that he did. That perhaps would put the cap on this event, if he did eventually.
I watched a tv documentary on this years ago. I cried when they interviewed the pilots at the end. (Still getting tears recalling it). You could see at the time that they loved flying and the fact that that ability was taken away from them weighed heavy on the men. The fact that they did not end up killing Calloway goes to their characters as human beings. And the fact that Calloway had the gall to write Obama for a pardon goes to HIS character. After all the time he spent in prison he still thought he was in the right. Hate to say it, but he probably thought he had a chance because he was a fellow black.
@@Sanchez9531 No, it takes more effort to subdue someone that hell bent on killing you. I think it was alluded to that they purposely chose not to kill him during the struggle, prior to them becoming almost gravely injured.
lol woman. it take two men to restrain and ANOTHER to find the hammer and whack him off in the head. so OBVIOUSLY it takes more energy to DO SOMETHING ADDITIONAL to the fact that they need to keep him restrained. do you get it? the life of everyone was in danger, if they could they would kill him the moment he attempted to murder them and hijack the plane but guess what you can't do much with a hole in your fucking skull and half of your body paralyzed.
@@vine7365 it doesn't take that long to do that. He just didn't really know what to say and wasn't talkative but he should have spoken more considering he specifically asked him in that dire situation. Also if he can't multitask he should have a different job.
No way I thought this was freakin real until the end where it showed the evacuation. Rolling the plane into a nosedive with a brawl going on in the galley its like strait out of a movie. How bad ass is that
I've never heard of this incident before; I was on the edge of my seat the whole time watching this. Great video, and incredible will to live and sharpness under pressure on the part of the crew.
There was an excellent book written about this incident years ago! The book also mention that Calloway chose this flight as he would have been familiar with the crew on board! The original crew which included a female crewmember timed out the previous night which caused a replacement crew to be utilized!
Troy Bellamy exactly. In addition, Callaways intent was to crash the jet into the Memphis hub nearest to the underground fuel tank storage. FedEx was sophisticated even back then because Fred Smith would do live video interactions with employees to express concerns or make recommendations. Callaway phoned in and his sole purpose was to embarass Smith - except they were able to identify him by voice. He wanted to try & ruin FedEx because a fuel tank explosion would have killed thousands of workers at the Memphis Hub. The book referenced was written by a reporter at the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, and it is spot on accurate.
I am a native Memphian, and I remember this like it was yesterday. God bless these amazing pilots!! Being able to land a huge DC-10, while they were all critically injured, is nothing short of miraculous! I have nothing but tremendous respect and admiration for these men! FEDERAL EXPRESS is known the world over for its excellent service, and I'm proud to say it's Memphis based! Some of the best pilots in the world fly for Fed Ex!
Robert Mitchum absolutely. That was the smartest thing he could have done. Initially when it said acrobatics I started picturing him doing cartwheels and handstands. I was like, huh? 😄 Then the plane started moving and I got it 😋
You and me same. Wasn't expecting any move as extreme as that, just a bunch of banking and climbs and dips. From a strictly flying pov, that was a f@#$ing amazing manouvre with a plane that size and weight. Made my stomach go awol for a second. and that was just witnessing the move in a sim. That must have been something to live through. Hope the perp never see's light of day.
Imagine the stories that planes tell each other at the gates. Random plane: "One time, I went through some turbulence over Kansas that felt like it was going to rip the wings off." N306FE: "That's nice. Remember the movie Inception? The hallway fight? Yeah, I was that hallway."
my eyes are glossed over with the sadness that someone can plot something so evil, and doubled over with the triumph of the heroic efforts that overcame it; well done
Jebidiah Newcracker There is nothing noble about attempting to kill 3 innocent people. Dude could have got a job at the gas station and struggled financially until he lands a better job. That would be the noble option.
My wife found your channel, her dad was an air traffic controller. I understand physics, but being able to make split second decisions based on one or a hundred variables, coming at you alone, alternately, or all at once, is pure instinct. Getting back after a hammer attack? That's all that and something that can never be quantified, balls. Great channel!
There should be a plaque in the cockpit of that plane that says, "Here flew the baddest of the bad." Seriously, getting that plane on the ground in once piece with that level of injury is impressive.
after watching this i am convinced the DC10 is a bad ass mofo of a plane, first the dude rolled it with a full fucking load and then went into a verticle nose dive and survived so well it was upgraded and still in use today.
well pilots are trained to work in stressful situations. thats what they do for a living. 15k+ ft above the ground all those years boi. pilots haves balls of steel. just like army guys. i do respect both pilots and army equaly.
I live in Australia. In 2000, I attended an AEA (Aircraft Electronics Association) conference in Reno, Nevada. We had an "after dinner" speaker named Jim Tucker who told us all about this terrible event and how he and the other crew fought for their lives in the skies above Memphis. Needless to say, everyone was spellbound. I had never heard about this before that. It is a miracle that all aboard survived!
I saw Jim Tucker speak at one time. Incredible person and pilot. He mentioned at the time that there are still footprints in the ceiling of that aircraft where they stood while fighting. When I heard him he had just started flying recreationally again. He's actually a quiet-spoken guy, someone you would never suspect of having gone through his experience.
@@megamike2016 because this was years later. Around 2002 because he said he just started flying recreationally. Which in the video it says that was in 2002. So many years later so he was rehabilitated by then
I had the great privilege to teach F/E Peterson's son and met Mr. Peterson on several occasions both at school and at church. Both he and his son are among the most outstanding and decent gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
It's a shame that all the crew members were forced to end their airline career, but I'm just glad they all survived. It's also a shame that the crew didn't kill the bastard of a mad man that had attacked them.
Captain Tucker is a LEGEND. I couldn’t function after being hit on the head with a hammer, let alone fly a giant aircraft, let alone subdue a crazed madman with weapons, while bleeding out with bone fragments in my brain, partially paralyzed and partially blind. The impact of the hammer was so instense the force hit Tucker’s head into the control panel and DENTED it. All 3 deserved a medal, and they were awarded the highest medal possible in aviation. Bravo, Captains. 👏🏻
Yeah, the right side of his body was paralyzed after the dive and Sanders took over as tucker went back to help Peterson. He was really weak at that point, and I guess Sanders was the least injured. So he landed it.
notsokewl if you read through the comments someone actually flew this aircraft after the incident as it was still in service for many years. They said the dent was there for a while.
This video had me at the edge of my seat and gave me goosebumps. I had never heard of this incident before so I didn't know if they'd be able to land or even if they'd survive their injuries. Great job on the story!
I was at work near the Memphis airport and saw this plane coming in. It was really low and rocking back and forth. I thought it was going to crash into one of the buildings along Brooks road. One wing would tip towards the ground and then it would roll and the other wing would tip towards the ground. I had no clue what was going on aboard the plane until I heard it later on the local news. It was unusually low to the ground and really loud and I also remember smelling jet fuel after it passed over. From the ground, I knew something wasn't right and thought it was in bad bad trouble.
My mom worked for FedEx at the Memphis airport when that happened. She said that they were all surprised about Callaway and nobody trusted anyone for a while at FedEx.
My grandfather was one of the first people in the cockpit when it was released back to FedEx according to my uncle who is a sr flight dispatcher there in Memphis.
I was absolutely enthralled by this narrative. That cap'n is something else, keeping his wits about him, nose pitching, multiple heavy bankings, successfully performing a NOSE DIVING manoeuvre with a heavy plane while suffering head injuries?? Badass! Don't mess with the best! I was in awe.
Possibly these were the words in his mind and he did everything to make it comes to pass and it came to pass. 'I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord'.
How could he have pleaded insanity when he planned the entire thing. Thank God his plan didn't work. Sorry for the condition he left the others. He should never be free.
Federal Express use to have a great program for their employees, you could hop in the jump seat and grab a flight to anywhere, usually Hawaii for the weekend and fly back on Sunday, that's why it was not strange to have an employee like Calloway on the flight. FedEx ceased this benefit after this incident.
That was the most appalling, horrific flight Ive ever watched. Those incredibly brilliant, brave pilots. Words fail me. What a sad loss to commercial aviation they are. So glad theyre still alive. What a story to tell the grandkids
Calloway, after ruining those pilots' lives, nearly killing them and permanently disabling them, still thinks he should have had to suffer absolutely zero consequences for his actions... He's impossible to rehabilitate. Nothing but a tax drain and an oxygen thief at this point. Every breath he takes is a gift given to him by society he's not grateful for.
Tax drain, nah as this is who should be in prison. What drains your taxes are prisoners in there for petty things that don't even compare to this incident
Even if he had succeeded in being found not guilty by reason of insanity, he likely would spend the rest of his life in a locked ward we'd still have to pay for.
People hate me for saying this , but I am right , you can take them out of the hood , but you can't take the hood out of them . Bill Cosby a perfect example .
I remember this incident well, having worked in the aerospace industry I can remember there was an old saying, Douglas built aircraft for the pilots (Boeing built planes for airline corporations)... and the craftsmanship that put this plane in the air certainly showed the dedication of the people who designed, built and maintained the aircraft! Secondly, the crew responded with incredible fortitude and heroism not only saving themselves but protecting thousands of lives beneath them! Bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Something that people probably never consider is the amazing structural integrity of airplanes. The Captain took that loaded plane through maneuvers that are done when a plane is tested and certified as ready to fly. Excellent presentation of the story.
I’ve flown 306FE both as a Flight Engineer, and as Captain after it was converted to MD. Before they installed the Heads Up Display, the panel over the captain’s head still had a dent from one of the hammer blows to the Captain.
As a retired USAF research pilot and FedEx Aero (Structures) engineer at the time, I was involved in the investigation. At one point at 14,000 feet, N306FE was in a 140 degrees bank, pulling 3 g's and 100 knots over redline airspeed. This drove the elevators into flutter and one of the depleted uranium balance weights was ripped off. It was found months later in a field in AR. A further inspection revealed no other structural damage. After release from the investigation impound and elevator replacement, N306FE was returned to service. Thank God it wasn't an Airbus - they're not nearly as tough.
Overide pilot ??? Are you talking about that very early model slow speed crash on take off and into a forest at end of runway ??? If so, that is ancient history, and in that case, the jets control had a delay in them ( Software ), that caused the accident. The plane was going very slowly at almost zero altitude leaving the pilot little room for any error. I am sure Boeing had a few mishaps in their development stages. Worth bearing in mind too that the Airbus had far more advanced controls than the Boeings of that era, fly by wire etc, so this was new territory. As for Boeings being more sturdy in a crash, well, I would not like to be relying on that to survive !!! Is there any evidence of this sturdiness ?? It certainly does not affect Airbus planes that fly around the Globe daily, thousands of them. I would put them as equals, but understand Regional preferences and nationalism. I am sure most French people would prefer to ride in Airbuses, just as Americans would side with Boeings. Bearing in mind the large employment and benefits to each others economies, this is entirely understandable. Same would apply to Harley Davidsons for Americans, and Ducatis and Aprilias for Euros. I am from Ireland but lived in the US for two decades, so I can see both sides, and I actually worked for Coca cola when they set up their first concentrate plant in Ireland in 1973.!! Hell , I even got a personal call from the VP of Coca cola in Atlanta when I was visiting California in 1976 !!! No kidding and nice memories. Cheers
Agreed. Nothing more disgusting than a self serving suicide perpetrator who involves innocent people in his scheme. No different than a terrorist in my eyes and should be treated as such.
They were SO professional, but NO pilot should have to endure that kind of terror. And to think this Calloway is living the easy life and wants parole! Why, so he can do it again? People with that kind of planned horror and murder in their heart, and carry out their well-planned crime, should be locked away for life with minimum food, water and shelter and probable isolation for what they did! But NO, today, a lot of them get off on some legal point and it's a game between the defense attorney and the prosecuting attorney (usually the DA), and sometimes even the judge who rules on the legal point that sets the criminal free or lessens the sentence. They just want to see who can win, when NO ONE WINS in a situation like the above!
You should watch the dramatization episode of this flight on the show "Mayday Air Crash Investigation". It's a great episode depicting what happened inside the plane. At the end, the NTSB investigators talking on the show say that had the hijacker succeeded, it was very possible that they would not have ever known what caused the crash.

Of course you haven't heard of this incident. But reverse the race of the perpetrator and the victims, and there would've been made-for-tv movies, interviews ad nauseum, and best-selling autobiographies by the crew.

Amazing that Captain Tucker had to learn to walk and talk after 3 major operations yet he was able to declare an emergency moments after the attack. Excellent and informative video once again. Can’t wait for the next one, I hope it comes sooner rather than later!
Plus the fact that brain injuries cause deterioration over time as the bleeding spreads so initially he wouldn't be too badly affected but things would worsen as the bleeding causes the pressure on his brain to increase.
Brain damage resulting from head trauma can take anywhere between half an hour to a couple of hours to show up as life-threatening. It is the internal haemorrhaging and fluid build up that is most dangerous and takes a bit of time before the victim becomes crippled by it.
Calloway had actually operated the same flight as the flight engineer the day prior with a different crew. Because the maximum crew day hrs, as allowed by the FAA, had been exceeded, that crew, including Calloway, were taken of this flight that they were scheduled to operate. This actually saved FedEx from an even larger castastrophe. Calloway apparently had already made plans for this attack as he was scheduled for a hearing that likely would have cost him his job. He was not under any type of indictment as mentioned in other comments. He had plans to attack the original crew he was schedule to operate with. Because he couldn't operate that flight as the engineer, he positioned himself as a jumpseater on the flight back to San Jose, Instead of just two pilots he would have to overtake, the Captain and the First Officer, he now had three pilots to overcome. Having a third person in the Flight Station increased the difficulty of achieving his goal. It also has been noted that the First Officer was a gym rat and was in terrific shape. The flight crew have been well taken care of by FedEx so they won't have to worry about another dime as long as they live. I'm a retired Navy and UPS pilot. I'm also an African American. Comments about African American pilots being affirmative action hires, thus less qualified, are way off base. Because of the high cost of flight training, most of us get our training in the military. To get your pilot wings in the military is no easy task. You'll be perfectly safe when you see us in the flight station.
As a commercially licensed pilot, my feeling is no matter your race, gender, country of origin, all that matters is how you fly the airplane. The airplane doesn't know who is at the controls - end of discussion.
Neither pilot ever flew again. The captain can't qualify medically, and the copilot does not want to fly again. Sad because they were both exceptional pilots long before this incident.
@@JPF941 PTSD does shit to you. My God. What an amazing story. I've had two near-death experiences and the human will to survive is so powerful. There's an individual nature to it but so much is rooted in pure instinct. I didn't get any official awards and that's fine by me. My award was staying alive and saving four peoples' lives. My two experiences and wins are my two highest accomplishments in life. Life wouldn't have meant much to me if things didn't break my way. I would have lost my father as a young man. Hearing him publicly say (he's a professor and professional speaker) I'm the reason he's lived a long life is music to my ears.
That’s truly beautiful man. I also had a somewhat near death experience. Someone almost hit the rear quarter panel of my life 94 Jeep at highway speeds. If someone say DC-10 is a hard plane to land and unsafe, try landing any airplane with your skull fracture after being hit by a hammer. This case is a testament of how well build DC10 is.
I don't know most planes one from another, but I understand some things about physics and stress. Those moves could have torn the wings off any airframe. All through the second half of this video, I was thinkiing, "What a tough old bird!"

You really can't fathom all that went on and happened and still believe it's right in front of you....still flying to this day! Dave, Jim, and Andy.....true heroes and the best of the best. Calloway? Just how were you going to explain a Westbound aircraft accidently doing a 180 back to Memphis? This was not the original flight crew scheduled to have taken this flight leg either....luckily. I did not know that Calloway asked Obama for a pardon.....why did this not get any press?? If this had involved civilians aboard a commercial flight perhaps securing of cockpit doors would've been done a lot sooner and .....perhaps....possibly prevented 9-11 since he intended to use the aircraft as a missle into the Memphis hub.

A very similar plan was also used in a book called the "The first officer's report"! It's available on Amazon Kindle!

The fact that this hasn’t been made into a movie is a crime. Out of nearly every aircraft accident, this one is most deserving of a film.
Wow tough bird and Pilots! Suprised the plane held together.
Ah come on now.!! Half the World flies in Airbus`s, and they are a match for comparable Boeings. Both are great aircraft makers. .
Cheers

They just want to see who can win, when NO ONE WINS in a situation like the above!

adrenaline would make it possible to be able to function and declare emergency. Odd stuff
Plus the fact that brain injuries cause deterioration over time as the bleeding spreads so initially he wouldn't be too badly affected but things would worsen as the bleeding causes the pressure on his brain to increase.
His blood loss probably caused brain damage.

I'd still let them ride shotgun (which would be the left because I'd fly from the right, so as to break my conditioning from driving on ground on the left hand site of the vehicle) for free (instead of the max costs a private pilot can charge) if I flew a Cessna or a Piper.
Truly an amazing story. I couldn't pull myself away from the computer until I finished watching.
Well edited, and could be made into a full scale movie.

I'd like to imagine him in prison opening a reply from Obama that simply reads "lol no :D"
Now "imagine" this...he wrote the letter to get a pardon...
To President Obama...
In January...2017...
Vids probably wrong, or maybe the guy IS insane, I'd still like his face when somebody gave him the bad news...
I see that monster was still feeling entitled ... but anyone who thinks that he would have received or been recommended for a pardon by ANYONE is just letting their prejudices and their political bullshit get in the way.
J Barnhart Are you suggesting that the video is factually incorrect? It states that the letter was received on 1.6.17, any idea of who the president was at that date?
@@jbarnhart2653 Actually, since Trump wouldn't have been inaugurated until January 20, 2017, and most presidents grant a bunch of pardons as their last acts of office. Him sending a letter requesting a pardon at that time would be factually accurate.
@@colinwoods9601 And I think the cutoff for Obama signing anything is Jan 1st...I think.
But he still doesn't get the whole not Pres anymore thing...
I get goosebumps watching your videos and putting myself in these situations. Those three men are bonafide Heroes with a capital H!
They were fighting with all their might to save 3 vip's.......themselves! Great video and story. Truth can be stranger than fiction.
Hats off to the badly injured pilots who continue to contain him. Hope they got generous $$ compensation. HEROES!
ive read somewhere they were paid salary for a long time. some of them quited but for purposes i cant recall now. i hope their operations were all paid aswell. cmon, they saved not only lives but very expensive plain and cargo!
.disabled permanently wasn't them of one least at surprised I'm
Gold medal for the acrobatics!! Riveting narrative and graphics. Thanks for the exciting 16 minute wake up!
Jesus Christ how did they survive that. Those pilots are heroes
Just a request not to use the Savior's name as an off-hand curse or throw-away term. It is offensive and hurtful to the many Christians who love Him. Thanks for understanding.
Listen, I'm a Christian and I took that comment as a prayer. Those pilots WERE HEROES and someone else's sense of entitlement isn't going to distract from that. The world is not going to get out of your way and never offend you.
@@catbriggs8362 But there is no god so there is no real offense. It's even really offensive against all other religions and every god ever invented. How dare you, your religion is right? Because you are born in a country with randomly that religion by your parents? The arrogance.
@@artavenuebln My thoughts exactly. Besides, what sort of weak pansy god can't handle it's name being spoken or written in vain without busting out some Preparation H? It can act as substitutionary atonement for the "sins" of all humanity but can't take someone saying it's name in a sentence that isn't kissing it's ass or groveling? I'd say that's a god that does not exist.
@@catbriggs8362 I agree with you Cat! All these offended atheists are so defensive when we want to express our love for Christ's Holy Name and defend His Commandment. To use His Name in any way other than to bring Him honor and glory is sinful. We all have done it even when expressing surprise or excitement. Others have been reminded me to always honor His Sacred Name. It is our obligation as Christians to never be ashamed of Him. I would rather offend another commenter than offend my God!
Heros. God bless them. My blood was boiling watching this, wanting to tear that man apart. Vengeance is mine says the Lord.
No, the person who wrote that chapter of the bible said that. Don't put words in Gods mouth,
Why does god give children cancer? For vengeance?
@@37rainman well said. But also true of allah that he avenges like it says in the quran among other things that you don't want to be entitled to allah's anger.
@@gortmog Why do you jump to the conclusion that the creator of something is necessarily responsible for what that creation does, or what happens to that creation?? It isnt logical. And it is juvenile.
People get cancer because shit happens. It has nothing to do with God, or, the "devil"
I remember when this happened, but I haven’t heard much about it since. Excellent presentation!
I'm a 25 yr Employee at FedEx and never heard this story until today on TH-cam
nor will you. Nor will anyone. Politiclaly correct Millennials, you know. SIckening, the society we now liv ein.
"Wheels Up, Heroes!" I salute you.
Calloway was getting stronger while they were getting weaker. That's chilling.
Wow. That's quite a story.... amazing the pilot was able to land the plane safely...with bone fragments in hi brain! Simply amazing!
Stress hormones make you crazy and can negate some brain damage symptoms. Brain damage will inhibit you from landing the bus if you aren't crazy. All pilots were practically dying when Sanders, the healthiest of the three, set N306FE (correct me if I'm wrong) down. Thank 4 billion years of natural selection for preparing us for what she could never predict.
Beautiful way of stating that
@@ellenorbjornsdottir1166 Initially, it was Tucker who did all the antics with the plane and later it was Sanders who landed the plane.
@@jnemail1 Aight.
This is probably one the few cases where being a former air force pilot actually helps to control the situation.
Farhan Tbs the thing is, F-15s are a lot more forgiving and maneuverable than a giant cargo plane. He is lucky the thing held up.
This one kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time
I didn’t know the outcome before seeing this
Just watched this video. This very plane is now (Jan. 8 2019 5:10 PM) flying from Memphis to Greensboro !
Not possible @walmartdog the DC 10 was retired many years ago.
@@leighcross5744 As of August 15, 2019, DC(MD)-10-30 N306FE is still in revenue service with FedEx. FedEx still operates DC(MD)-10s in revenue service but they will likely be phased out next year as they are being replaced by 767s. The DC-10 is one of my favorite airliners and easily one of the most underrated. Safety record aside, few other airliners could survive nearly breaking the sound barrier in an inverted nosedive and being landed overweight and remain in service another 25 years... Not to mention all done my a single half paralyzed pilot!
As of this comment N306FE landed 45 minutes ago in Austin, Texas. flightaware.com/live/flight/N306FE
EDIT: N306FE should be donated to a museum when it's retired, and maybe returned to its 1990s Federal Express livery.
Man, he flew that plane like a boss, and with one arm paralyzed.
I was one of the paramedics at the scene. I was on Unit 8 and had Calloway in the back of the ambulance when are Air Crash Chief called me on the radio and said " Your code Red". That is a term we used to say danger. Calloway became angry and wanted to get out of the ambulance then we were told to hold him down. We faught for a few minutes until about 8 police officers came in and gang tackled Calloway. I want to say seeing that DC10 come into 36L I thought he was going to crash. He and the other crew members saved thounsands of lives that day. Calloways goal was to crash it into the hub killing himself and allowing his family to recieve the insurance money.
Nice LARP story.
Things that never happened
I Love Minecraft idiots. Get off the net little boy!!
I Love Minecraft go fuck yourself Minecraft fan boy
Ill take things that didn’t happen for 500 please
Right now there’s actually a major petition for FedEx to preserve the recently retired DC-10 involved in this incident, tail number N306FE. Let’s all pitch in and help keep this piece of aviation history alive and not share the fate of the Gimli Glider!
Who's watching this 2019, June. Amazing pilots to the end. They deserve a metal.
Medal
Just watched for First time. It was intense ! Teared up as they all survived but wish Calloway didn't.
I never seen this on the news was it blacked out?

Each are your videos are truly a joy to watch. Accurately depict the events in an exciting way that keep me on the edge of my seat. Keep doing what you are doing, as I am sure I will keep watching
Awesome job telling this story. Good visual and audio to keep us interested!! Thanks so much for sharing!
To do those maneuvers while being half conscious. Total badass
Well done to the crew, handled it like pro's
That was exhilarating! Great video man
Exhilarating? It was terrifying!
I barely remembered this from when I was a kid. Just stumbled upon it here. More gripping than most of the crap on netflix.
Tanner Murdock Riveting stuff!
Or most of the crap on TV in general.
Why hasn’t this been turned into a film yet?
If invited to, most could guess correctly why this will never make it into a film.
geoh7777 Well, you were invited to so please enlighten us.
Indeed, in this divisive, political climate, the SJWs have already decided that you can't go around casting certain types of people in a wrong light, irrespective of what the actual truth may be...
"Air Disasters" did a show about it.
Anyone have a suggested name to movie play the blk hi-jacker?
Oh my goodness, my heart was pounding watching this. Very few people would have had the kind of courage and resolve these pilots displayed in this situation. And I really cannot imagine a more impressive level of airmanship under difficult conditions than this pilot showed. Thank you for telling this story!
Honestly this was one of the coolest and most interesting events that I have ever seen.
I'm sorry, but if you can plan sufficiently as he did for this, "temporary insanity" should never be able to be applied.
Insanity defenses, temporary or otherwise, work in less than half a percent of cases. When they do work, the defendants are often incarcerated longer than if they had not used the defense.
IOW: That is not a problem.
I agree but I'm not sorry.
It wasn't.
This is the craziest story I never heard of. Boggles the mind!
It wasn’t applied he got life in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Harshest punishment a person can get. Much worse than death.
Unforgiveable actions by Calloway and heroism of the highest orders by the pilots
Absolutely, they earned it. I shudder to think what could have happened if that plane went down over a populated area.
True heroies.
I surely would have rolled many times and likely would have died if I hadn’t somehow pressed the accelerator in just a split second. An angel intervened that day
Well directed video. You're good at story telling. Also the graphics seem to have been upgraded! Looked vibrant today.
Not to mention a testament to how well the pilots were built. Those men are superheroes.
Putera Usman The DC10 still killed the Concorde and had the worst accident in the USA
@@douglux657 Aren't they all retired now? I remember flying from Alaska to Texas on one in 1991. I hated that seating arrangement!

An amazing story which somehow escaped my attention when it was in the news. Thanks for making and uploading this vid!
This same aircraft is on our ramp as i type this(Memphis flight 1523 N306FE) Friday 02-01-19. Still unbelievable some 24 years later!
Why didn't it get any press? Because it doesn't suit the typical narratives of propaganda.
Funny thing is I'm a 25 yr Employee for FedEx and never heard of this story until today from scrolling my TH-cam.
@@fudgetone I looked further and there was another incident that a certain type DID crash a whole plane, after shooting to death the pilots...its truly a narrative of political correctness.
