    Captain: Keep it out of the grass
    F/O: *nervous laughter*
    The captain must have known that there was a very good chance he was going to end up in the grass by his speed and the way he lined up the aircraft. Just as if you were a driver but in the passenger seat you would be able to sense if the driver needed to slow down or wasn't going to make a turn etc. Why not guide a clearly nervous, jittery F/O than throwing him in the deep end and watching him sink?

    Even though the pilots were criticized for their less-than-stellar performance, their very survival may have well been dependent on their combined experience - which was a lot. On the other hand, they made rookie mistakes. I think I just canceled out my own comment.
    But worth noting is the excellent video! Well done, sir. Well done.

      That was a she. --- The first officer, age 44, was hired by FedEx on February 21, 1996, from Mesaba Airlines, where she had been employed as a DeHavilland DHC-8 captain. She holds an ATP certificate (issued March 21, 1991) with a multiengine land rating and a flight engineer certificate for turbojet-powered airplanes. The first officer's ATP certificate indicated type ratings in the DHC-8 (issued September 21, 1992), Fokker F-27 (issued November 11, 1995), and MD-11 (issued October 22, 1998). FedEx records indicated that the first officer completed initial MD-10 differences training on February 10, 2003. The first officer's most recent FAA first-class airman medical certificate was issued on July 25, 2003, with a restriction that the holder must wear corrective lenses.

    The MD-11 has a modified airfoil design. The tail provides less lift / less drag requiring the MD-10 to have to come in at a higher speed similar to a fighter jet. There is also an optical problem which makes it harder for the pilot to tell where the nose is.

    The excessive speed did not cause the landing gear failure, it was the yaw of the aircraft in addition to the right wing dropping at touchdown that caused the landing gear to collapse. Aircraft must take 500 fpm landing strikes by design, but this aircraft hit the runway somewhat sideways descending at 870 fpm. Given the weight of the aircraft, they are lucky to walk away. A 20-degree crosswind is not difficult to handle, given 16G22. The added speed probably saved their lives. I disagree about terminating people for making mistakes - they won't make that one again, but consistently below-average performance should be a red flag. The check pilot … smack him with a book of approach plates. What were you thinking? jmho.

    didn't the captain say that if they were not stable by 1000 feet they would go around? If i heard the tape correctly, the altitude (by aircraft system) called 1000 feet, then the FO asked for gear down.. and the flaps were not fully configured either... that is an unstable approach. A go-around should have been called by the captain.

    Random question but I’m assuming pilots are on this channel
    Why can I use my cell phone (like cellular calling/texting) with certain airlines but not others ? I heard that the airplane mode is a bunch of bs and that unless it’s an old plane it most likely won’t interfere with anything. Is this true ? This might be a dumb question but why could people use sky phones but I can’t call on my cellphone? Also where did skyphones go?

    • @robertheinkel6225
      @robertheinkel6225 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It might, I repeat, it might effect the electronics on the aircraft. Some airlines just dont want to risk it. Sky phones were not wireless, therefore wouldn't affect the aircraft.

    "Gain and loss of 10?"
    I've never heard this ATC phrasing before; what does it mean?

    • @neatstuff8200
      @neatstuff8200 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That means the steady-state when is interrupted by between 5 and 10 knots of wind unexpectedly. This is a problem for heavy aircraft in that they have inertia so the gain or loss is real as opposed to a light aircraft which would simply transition to the new parcel of air envelope. But the captain stating four knots it's just another way that he has been harassing her for three hours with. He's being a smart alec . The proper airspeed pad is all of the steady-state plus half of the gust wind . Keep it out of the grass. Right

    • @paulgooding803
