Women should never RELY on the good behavior of men for their own safety and security. Ask yourself, if the men around me behave BADLY, how will I protect myself?
Whenever I see a story about a young woman going missing after a solo night out at a club or bar, I immediately think, "Yep, she's gonna turn up dead." She didn't live circumspectly, and women are vulnerable.
Here's a statistic for you. There are 5,000 men in Georgia who regularly pay for s3x with children. Understand that this is not a safe world. There are predators everywhere. Live accordingly.

Women are way too trusting, it's true. And we often do things we're uncomfortable with because we don't want to be rude. I will never forget a story I heard from a self-defense trainer once. He talked about a time he had his dog with him and they needed to take the elevator in a garage. When it opened up there was a shady looking guy in a dark hoodie in the elevator. The dog took one look at this dark figure, and immediately sensed danger (they both did) and while the guy was willing to still get into the elevator, the dog refused; he couldn't drag him in. We should all take lessons from that dog. Who cares if you come off as rude, trust your gut.

I don’t think women are more trusting then men. There are too many trusting people in this world that don’t think crime will happen to them……on another note we are perpetuating distrust in our fellow man day by day. People have always been evil, it’s just today there are more people and social media and the news to make you more aware of it…. Remember when people got away with murder easily because there wasn’t DNA testing or video cameras everywhere?

"The Gift of Fear" is a must-read for everyone, but especially women. We do not get the luxury of relaxing. I don't think there's such a thing as too cautious. I'd rather feel guilty for misjudging a man than put myself in harm because I lowered my guard. I have a few things that I don't do without my husband -- chief among them being going for walks by myself or going to stores in the evening. I'm not the most assertive person naturally, but simply being observant and aware can go a long way.

I read this book 25 years ago and I still remember so much about it. As a 6 foot 1 man with a large build, I was drawn into this book when it opened with asking men when the last time it was that they felt afraid or vulnerable while walking through an empty garage, and I remember thinking to myself... "Huh... Never." It made me realize how differently women have to navigate life from men. And for that story she told about the woman being pushed into her apartment, the end of that story is the most important lesson. After being raped in her bedroom several times, the man told her to stay in the room and that he was going to basically leave. But she had a gut feeling that he was lying, so against all of her fears, she got up and quietly followed him down the hall and when he turned into the kitchen (to get a knife to kill her with) she kept going straight and ran right out of her apartment. It was that "gut" feeling that saved her life... Always trust your gut.

Even as a large frame man certain situations and locations should definitely get your guard up and make you feel somewhat afraid. Fear and awareness can keep you alive. We live in a much more violent world now from when the book was published. Men are targets as well no matter your size.

@@carbonking53 You’re 100% spot on. I was 25 when I read it in 97, so of course (at the time) I was invincible. I only mention my size because at that time, men of that size didn’t worry about being abducted or sexually assaulted. But you’re right, in this day and age, situational awareness is imperative for all people… But still with sex trafficking being such a big thing these days, women still have it harder than us guys.

I'm an army brat. Born & raised at Ft. Bragg & in good old Fatalville so I was raised to always have my head on a swivel. To always be highly aware of what was going on around me & who was near me. I can't remember ever entering a building without immediately looking around to find other exits. As kids we were taught to try to spot trouble before it started & get the hell out of Dodge. To walk with our heads up & with a purpose. To have our car or door keys out and ready to use well before we reached the car or the door. (BTW keys carried in your fist, so the ends come out right below your knuckles make an excellent weapon & I often carry mine that way when returning to my car.) To look back frequently to make sure no one is following us. To be aware of anyone who's paying you more attention than is normal. To have a clearly defined personal space & call out anyone who violates it the instant they do. And most importantly to never ever worry about offending someone or looking foolish by taking action if you feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way. Now I realize that to most people it might seem that living in that mindset is exhausting but it's become second nature. I do it without thinking about it. Never having lived any other way I have nothing to compare it to. It's just ingrained in me. I can say though that 99% of the people I encounter might as well have "Easy Victim" tattooed on their forehead mainly because of their lack of awareness & their incredibly slow, usually wrong, response when something does happen. You want to empower your girls? Train them to protect themselves. It's never too early or too late to start.

Side note: I definitely encourage people who have USCCA to look at their contract terms and agreements. It states that coverage will be denied if you are charged with a crime....yet many officers who aren't on your side may charge you with assault/murder/manslaughter if things don't happen to look right at the crime scene regardless of the circumstances. In this case, USCCA could deny your request for an attorney since you are technically charged with a crime or a "criminal use" of your firearm. In their terms that sort of use is not covered even if you have only been charged and not been to a hearing yet. I caution you to consult with your personal attorney and see, because my attorney definitely had to point these out to me. I now am looking into other insurances like Firearms Legal Protection and others.
    Be safe friends

I also shouldn’t have to wear a seatbelt, but I do. One morning on way to work some guy should not have run a stop sign, but he did. Without seatbelt rollover could have ended badly. With seatbelt, witnesses, insurance, “first” responders, and a friend willing to pick me up for work it turned into a nonevent. Shouldn’t need seatbelts, shouldn’t need to pay for insurance, police or firefighters - but we do because it is just common sense. But most times it’s like trying to herd cats.

That’s why if you made the vows to God the Father the son and the holy sprit that you were going to be there for your wife as a married man it’s your responsibility to be there to keep your eyes open and your head on a swivel looking for troubles to protect her from because they just don’t always seem to careful enough.

Everything Mrs. War Poet said describes my wife. I’ve tried talking to her, using situations in the news to explain and even a few in our home town. Nothing. The “it won’t happen to me” attitude is deeply ingrained in her brain. She hasn’t even carried her weapon or light in months. I’m lost on how to combat this attitude of unpreparedness. She can’t even really fight. She grew up very sheltered. Our situations were different. I grew up fighting and know exactly what people think and how fast things can go sideways. She just doesn’t think anything will ever happen and I can’t seem to break through.

I've avoided blue on blue sexual violence several times, because I'm a bitch. My 7 year old daughter is learning to be the same way. She already has som incredible sass, and we are only teaching her to modulate that, NOT eliminate it. Pretty girls can't afford to be nice! She is naturally inclined to be very kind, but that is NOT the same as being nice, or overly polite. We are 100% weaponizing every strength that little girl has! Great video and solid advice. Trained in martial arts for many years. So, I get questions from women on the best one thing for self defense.
I have been giving this exact advice to women for years now. I tell women trust that gut instinct ! If you have a bad feeling about a someone in a store and they are following you out the door. Turn around and head back in to the store. Get a manager and ask for a male employee to escort you out. If someone is being pushy or getting in your personal space. Get loud and tell them to back off. Attract attention to yourself and the situation.
Parking lots , If your cornered and or weapon is displayed . The fight is right now! Again get loud and fight to create distance.

The book, "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin DeBecker covers this topic in detail and in great scope and depth. It is so good I buy used copies to gift to young women going to college or heading into the world of work. Please, everyone needs to read this book. It is good for men and women as it raises your awareness of the pre indicators of violent behavior. Especially if you are on the safety team of your church.

Be ready to holster shop/ spend money. Try checking out the TH-cam channel to called 'she equips herself'. She does a bunch of reviews on different types of holsters and paraphernalia. Neo mags, can-can holsters, and flashbangs are popular choices. But also, I found it really helpful when somebody said no matter what you're always going to be somewhat uncomfortable. Carrying a gun is a lifestyle choice and you have to make certain sacrifices in order to enjoy that privilege. So I found it very helpful to also manage my expectations on what carrying a gun would be like. I hope that was succinct and helpful.

Women are TOO skittish, though. I've had women act like I'm following them around the grocery store. I've literally had to go out of my way to avoid women in grocery stores when women look at me, first. When someone looks at you, instinctively, you look back. I've literally had to change my pattern of shopping in the grocery store because of this. I'm a very large man because I'm a former offensive linemen. How are people supposed to meet one another if everyone thinks men are murderers? This is NOT the world we want to be living in. We're going to have more single people and less families if everyone is afraid of men.

This is so wonderful and very informative. Thankfully I’ve been been paranoid all my life so I’m consistently seeing threats everywhere.
Even so, please refrain from ever using the phrase “she was asking for it.” That phrase needs to die and for good reason. I also think we shouldn’t say it’s our responsibility to keep ourselves safe or that their is dual responsibility between us and the person committing the crime against us. You are never responsible for someone choosing to commit a crime. The only people who will see you as a target are the criminals. Someone who has no intention of hurting you will not see people as targets, just people.
It’s a good idea to be on alert and be aware of your surroundings and trust your gut, but never let anyone convince you that if someone hurts you that you are somehow responsible for the horrible thing THEY chose. You are not.
