I find it funny that Groose might be the most important character in Hyrules History. He helped Link stop the imprisoned, he saved Zelda from falling to her death, Hyrule should actually be called Grooseland as he was the first to ever name it, and he planted the Deku Tree

Something I think no one ever mentions is that Fi and Ghirahim are polar opposites in EVERY way.
Fi is the Sword of the Goddess, Ghirahim is the sword of the Demon King.
Fi is pretty much all blue, while Ghirahim wears his striking red cloak most of the time. His true form also obviously is extremely similar to her's as well.
Fi is robotic and calculated, Ghirahim is quite literally so driven by his emotions that his playfulness leads him to not killing Link immediately despite it being in his best interests.
Hell, Fi relinquishes herself into eternal slumber to the Master Sword with a heartfelt goodbye, while Ghirahim happily does the same as Demise's sword without a single line of dialogue shared between the two.
Quite frankly I think the biggest missed opportunity in Skyward Sword is that Fi and Ghirahim never interact and play off their clearly opposed positions as the blades for god-like beings, how both are doing everything for the sake of their wielders.

I agree with most of what was said, except with Fi. I always found Fi to be a fascinating character, but I believe it requires the player to actively seek it out. A lot of Fi’s personality only shines when you actively seek it out in optional dialogue prompts. Fi by her nature is reactionary, only speaking up in response to certain events. As such, you have to go out of your way to get to know her, like listening to her advice when analyzing enemies and NPCs, or having casual discussions about certain locations and events, like Skipper’s retreat.

In general, people have often found the traveling companion characters in Zelda franchises annoying. I personally have never understood that. I suppose they do interrupt the game, and perhaps that can get frustrating when done several times in succession, but honestly I always enjoyed them. It made the game feel a little less lonely, as you go through the story and have expanses of time with no other character interaction. I love Breath of the Wild, and I know I’m in the minority when I say I wouldn’t have minded a companion character for Link in the game.

I actually have to disagree regarding that there has never been another character like Groose in a Zelda game.
Nobody seems to remember Linebeck from Phantom Hourglass, which makes sense because this game has a lot of flaws and the majority didn't play it. Linebeck is this shady Captain who has a boat and follows you on your adventure. At first you don't trust him because he lies to you, is an absolute coward and money is the only thing important to him. Over time he begins to become a better person and in the end, when all of this come full circle, it's a really powerful moment. He also has the funniest cutscenes with Link ever!

Something the stuck out to me in terms of Fi's characterization was in Skipper's house during the Sand Sea quest. After you find the map you were looking for, Fi pops out and is like "Hey, look at all these portraits of dead robots who will never get to see their robot families again." and when you look around, there's a picture of a crew that has lost all but like 4 of its members, there's one of Skipper holding someone who is presumably his wife like the scene from Titanic, there are notes from Skipper's son that talk about how he can't wait for Dad to come home from work on the sandship. Given your experiences with the timeshift stones and your knowledge of the fate of the Lanayru region, it's chilling to see the effect that all of this had on the lives of these robot people who inhabited it. But while the player is left to put all of this together and to take in all of the implications, Fi basically just says "Well, we got what we came for, let's go." I feel like if there were more moments like that in the game, Fi almost would have felt sinister

I’m in the same boat as you, this was my first Zelda and I have great memories of this game, but it’s impossible to ignore its flaws. However a lot of people either let the flaws overshadow the great moments like the dungeons & characters (the Groose is loose!) or they try to justify all of the bad elements like Fi & the backtracking. I think for me personally the high points & nostalgic memories will always make this one of my favorite Zeldas, but this really does represent the best & worst of the series.

I've never had the money to play the games myself, and I've always relied on watching my friends play irl or watch other people online. I fell in love with skyward sword first time I ever saw with it's soundtrack, story and characters, and never could fathom why so many people dislike the game. Turns out a lot of it was due to the original controls, which is fair, but it still saddens me that one of my favourite games in existence has more of a negative connotation in a lot of places. I'm so glad for the remake for the switch, as I feel like many old and new zelda fans found an appreciation for it that might not have been there before.
As for the other games, can't wait for you to experience them! Gameplay-wise I can't say much in terms of personal experience, but I can say for sure that there aren't a lot of zelda games where I haven't enjoyed watching people play them. :)

I feel like AoC could have expanded more on Revali's character that was established in his diary entries from botw. To an extent I think botw could've done well with hinting a bit more on why other races seemed to think Hylians only cared for themselves.
Revali being a rival and dickhead from miscommunication/misunderstanding of Link might not jive with a lot of people but it makes a lot more sense than him seemingly disliking Link for no reason.
This is why I kinda hate that the champion's ballads only had one cutscene per champion and it was with Zelda only. I know the main game had cutscenes where the champion's interacted with Link but the DLC would've been perfect to show a more grounded relationship with Link.
Like show us the scene revali wrote about in his diary!! Show us how he tried to actually talk to Link rather than talk down at him. Like there are snippets of Revali who's less of a pompous dickhead and moreso someone who wants to be admired and loved by all.

    • @Trithis2077
      @Trithis2077 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@mr.preston1632 Honestly I think that's why BotW falls flat for me. It's the all too common pit fall of "Jack of all trades, but master of none." Sure there are hundreds if not literally thousands of things to do, but none of them live up to what previous 3D Zelda games did. Now, that's not to say I didn't enjoy it or there weren't things I think they should carry over into fututure games, but overall I would much prefer a return to form.
I mean, honestly the more I think about it, it's really just the dungeons and shrines I have a problem with. I actually quite liked the story of BotW and AoC actually ended up being one of my favorite Zelda games just because of said story. But story and a sandbox world can only get you so far. The "dungeons" were only really "unique" in the fact that you moved a different part of the beast. That's a far cry from the differences between dungeons in previous games. For example, Majora's mask. The first dungeon, you're working to heal a sick swamp and when you do, more of the dungeon opens up. The next dungeon though, it all revolves around climbing this massive tower and adjusting the column in the center to get to different parts of the dungeon (and that's not even addressing the aesthetic differences).
Not to mention all the unique items you got throughout dungeons. I mean, how cool would it be if in Vah Medoh you got something similar to the dominion Rod in Twilight Princess. Then during the windblight fight there's a big thunderstorm. You have to use the dominion rod to take control of the big piller like statues and move them close to windblight to direct the lightning onto him while also moving the statues to block Windblight's attacks from hitting you.
I think with BotW, the four beasts just felt too similar that they should've been a single dungeon, while the shrines felt too plentiful that they almost became an annoyance eventually. It's strange because I think if those blessing shrines (where the challenge is in the overworld so you just walk into the shrine and complete it) just ended in the overworld with a heart piece or something I would've enjoyed them more. Just the fact that it has you go down into a shrine every single time, it started to feel stale.
TL;DR: Give me dungeons that truly feel different from each other, cool items that give a sense of progression, and overworld rewards like heart pieces.

Good thing to keep in mind is that Skyward Sword *was* supposed to be on the same level as Breath of the Wild. The game unfortunately suffered troubled development, but in playing Breath of the Wild for the first time, I could see the lineage there. There is a *lot* wrong with Skyward that frustrates me but at the same time, that game had to come first so we could even have the masterpiece that came after. I think it's owed some respect for that alone even if someone dislikes literally anything else about Skyward.

  • @The_Story_Of_Us
    @The_Story_Of_Us 2 ปีที่แล้ว +63

I can’t ignore the fact that I do feel some type of way whenever I get to that ending with Fi. Like it’s not overstated at all, the game isn’t obnoxious about it, acting like you were suppose care about her that much. Even Link’s reaction to it is pretty mild, especially compared to how much he lets on with Zelda, he’s more hesitant about it than anything and when she finally does say goodbye he doesn’t look melancholy about it, he seems pretty at peace with the whole thing (like compare that to him kicking, screaming and crying when Zelda seals herself away, it’s clearly not the same deal). But that goodbye seems more like a recognition that unlike the Master Sword, Fi wasn’t just some Helpy Helperton tool to be used and put away (kind of like how Zelda says the goddess used him), you did genuinely share some beautiful moments with her that call to attention something that’s perhaps not spoken about enough, which is that despite the heaviness of why you’re doing this, what Link’s objective and motivations are, along the journey there was this persistent, whimsical and adventurous tone to it all as you explore this gorgeous world below the clouds, which is very much analogous to Link’s journey. It’s a coming of age, you broaden your horizons and discover what the world has to offer, good and bad, outside of the bubble/floating town in the sky you exist in as a child. Fi facilitated that journey, she helped him grow up, she was there as a crutch, stopping him from getting lost and showing him the way forward. It’s no empathetic connection, but it’s an attachment and when she goes away, Link wouldn’t be human if he didn’t react to it. And to see that you’re not just leaving someTHING behind before truly moving into adulthood, but leaving someONE behind, someone who then has to enter an eternal sleep, essentially death, and makes sense of such a conflicting feeling by expressing happiness and gratitude for the time she spent with you despite never asking a thing for herself. That’s not without meaning and while it could have been developed more throughout the course of the game, it works fine and doesn’t really re-contextualize how you’re supposed to feel playing this game, it’s a fun, marvelous adventure, it just happens to have real stakes. And on series level, it adds a lot character to the Master Sword, I mean literally, there’s a soul inside that sword that can’t come out again. Ever. And with Breath of the Wild, it shows that every time someone picked up that sword, someone’s in there helping, someone that won’t ever get to relive that experience she had like a gazillion years ago, maybe she’s even forgotten about all that over the millenia, but she’s carrying out that same mission, over and over again forever. Picking up that sword has a level of meaning now that it never did before and will always have. A thread tying the whole series together in a way that contrasts the eternal curse of Demise that Hyrule is subject to and can never escape.
As we see in that last memory in Breath of the Wild, the curse that is Ganon can ruin everything, bring the world to disaster and cause untold pain and suffering, but in the same vein, there’s also that little flicker in this old sword that comes back every time to help out a bit and it always seems to be just enough.

44:19 Alright, if there's anyone still out there playing the original Skyward Sword in 2021, I'm gonna give a PSA on this tidbit. You technically *can* go do the Lanayru Gorge section first if you know what to avoid, because doing Lanayru's section first doesn't lock your save file, it's actually talking to the Goron archeologist in the cave after you finish Lanayru's quest that locks your save file.
I think I heard somewhere that they actually originally intended the third act to be linear like the other two acts, but I guess they decided it would be cooler if you could do them in any order (which they were right.)
Unfortunately, with that, they also forgot to fix the event flag where the Goron archeologist greeting you locks you into Lanayru's quest and out of the other two quests (since it would be a VERY unpleasant surprise to dip into the Sealed Grounds real quick only to be greeted by The Imprisoned again). So, if you talk to the Goron again, it triggers the same flag that locks you into Lanayru's quest, but you can't complete it since, well, you already completed it, essentially softlocking you into this part of the story.
TL,DR: You're totally free to do Lanayru's part first and get the Hylian Shield, only if you LEAVE IMMEDIATELY AND GO TO EITHER FARON OR ELDIN. No matter how much you want to say hi, DO NOT TALK TO THE GORON, JUST USE THE CONVENIENT BIRD STATUE AND GO SOMEPLACE ELSE.

But The Imprisoned as a whole felt like a race against time, knowing that the seal was weakening and he could come back at any time. The tadtone section was great too, I loved the flood. my single issue with the motion controls was the awful recalibration on the wii version, abruptly stopping your playthrough to wait for (what felt like) a minute or longer to play the game as intended was mildly infuriating to me, as I only got to play the game at a friend's house about every other day, time is precious, and staring at a motion-control loading screen is not a good use of it. The Switch version is so much better with the simple button-press instant recalibration.

You forgot to mention the most important change of all in the remake: There’s no back in time!
Seriously though, the Any% Record in the Wii version by gymnast86 is by far my favourite speedrun. It is just 70 minutes of the runner walking around, talking to people, dying, walking around on the title screen, saving, and assuring you that it will all make sense. Then at some point they announce that what they did saved about 3 hours before casually going into the horde fight and defeating Demise. Amazing. Only thing that could make it better if it were also one the runs where they defeat the final boss blindfolded.

Here’s how I’d restructure the Imprisoned fights:
-Make him slower. The sealed grounds are entirely too small for him to move that fast.
-Roll all three of his fights into a single 3 stage fight, with the battle progressing each time you shove the spike down. First one plays out identical to the first fight, with an added line from Groose saying he’s got something that’ll help, but it needs some finishing touches to justify why you don’t use the Groosenator here. The second stage he starts climbing the pit, but the Groosenator is ready. Shoot him down with it and he falls all the way down, doing visible damage to the ground on impact. Third stage he starts flying but his fall at the end of the second stage opened up a super strong updraft. Stun him with the Groosenator and use the updraft to skydive onto his head, hammer in the spike for the final time and end the fight.
-Have this fight take place immediately after you return from your conversation with Zelda in the past. Impa gives some exposition lines about how the seal has finally weakened enough for Demise to escape in his bound form, and he’ll regain his true form if he is allowed to reach the temple and consume Zelda. At the end of the fight, Impa explains that the seal you just restored isn’t going to last forever, and you need to find the triforce before it breaks again.
Admittedly, this is a bit of a rough fix, since I came up with it in about 5 minutes. But if implemented properly, these changes can make the Imprisoned fight a competent introduction to the Song of the Hero instead of the insufferable, repetitive rage fest that it ended up being.

Also, a huge tip for Imprisoned 2 and 3 if you have trouble in the comments, you can use your aarows to shoot the toes off of this boss, AND if you upgrade fully they will ONE SHOT toes at full charge. Considering how tedious he is to fight up close, if you get ahead and shoot him it's much more bare able. Still agree the execution of this fight the third time was terrible and recycling a boss 3 times like this was embarrassing. They did this with Ghirahim too, but I think we all agree each Ghirahim fight was fresh and engaging.

something else I think this game really nails is impact, specifically in the sound effects. they use a lot of grand sounding or deep and encroaching sounds and the occasional echo to really sell you on the impact, like the sound when demise challenges you, his and the imprisoned's voice and lurching sound clips, the breathing sounds of levias, the sound effects when you repeatedly hit an enemy, a lot of Link's voice clips sound very intense, everything has a sense of grandness to it when it comes to the sound effects, and the visuals help with this, with actual clever uses of motion blur and some neat camera tricks to sell grandeur. I agree with your view of the story, but this stuff keeps the feel of the game pretty epic to me.

Your commentary on the “3 act decline” perfectly describes my experience with the game. I played the HD version first so I wasn’t bogged down too much by the forced interruptions and control issues everyone complains about, but I still noticed some big structural issues in the core game that can’t be fixed by small tweaks. It just kind of devolves as it goes on, nothing big happens to change anything up or unlock anything cool, outside some cool story moments and great dungeons it feels like the narrative deescalates as you head towards the end.

There is a real wholesomeness in their relationship in this game. And in a sea of characters and relationships, gaming and otherwise, where it is gritty, dark, and complicated. It’s refreshing to have characters just have a pure love. And all the characters in this game really- I’m not argue that they are super deep or complex but…they are likable. They have personality even Link who is silent expresses a lot.
I think many of the other Zelda games have aspects to it that are superior. But Skyward Sword has so much heart in it. It’s the game equivalent of a warm bowl of soup and it makes me feel like I’m a kid. In a good way.

Pumpkin soup! I played this game when I was 26, I loved it then and I love it now mostly because I IMMEDIATELY saw all the connections to the other zelda games which if you'd like to see I detail in a brand new post here on this page. Aside from the timeline stuff I just loved Links journey, how he starts as a goof and is forged into a hero. Skyward Sword Link has some of the most impressive feats of strength(Power) but where he really shines is his courage and by the end it felt like THIS is the original Link that all Links come from. Also a sucker for romance so it was great finally having zero doubts about these child hood friends falling in love and starting the royal family of Hyrule on the surface.

As much as I love Skyward Sword, I'm glad you made this video by both pointing out some of the major flaws the game has as well as pointing out some of the most amazing parts about it. As someone who usually defends Skyward Sword to the bitter end because of videos like Egoraptor's Zelda sequelitis video, I was actually able to agree with most of the things you dislike about the game, and the way you pointed out both the good stuff and the bad really helped with that. As of right now Skyward Sword is one of my favorite Zelda games, even after my latest playthrough of the HD version, and despite that I can definitely understand why you'd consider this game is just a good game and not a great one. I really enjoyed watching this video and I'm looking forward to seeing you cover more Zelda games in the future. Happy Zelda Month Schaffrillas!

Thank you for this video. I had bought HD for my switch when it released but never gotten around to playing it. I finished this video and immediately started a playthrough and did nothing else but play the game for 4 days straight and it was (again) one of the best gaming experiences I've had in a long time. Thank you

It definitely has a place in my heart.

I never played Skyward Sword back in the day but I played it for the first time with HD and honestly I fell in love in the game. It's definitely my second favorite game in the series and one of my favorite games ever.

Fi is a sweet lady with a really unique aesthetic relative to the rest of the series' characters, it sucks that the gameplay features _make_ her annoying to listen to

The "At least it can't get any worse," then showing the colorful music score, playing the music, and having the fucking Whiplash cut immediately after that is
    PRIME. EDITING. COMEDY.
    Holy shit. I'm dying.
