Had a $220aud beginner flute for the past 15 years, and it's brought so much enjoyment. I somehow managed to put it through grade 6 pieces in school. Havent played nearly as much in the 6 years since my last lesson, and didnt particularly enjoy going back to those pieces, but playing in church band I get lots of compliments, and it's fun to experiment with simpler music. Now that I've done some research and comparisons, I can really tell how my flute struggles to keep up with fast technical work, and the keys sometimes stick, and high notes are really metallic, and that was probably part of why I was reluctant to go back. So I'm finally upgrading to a yamaha intermediate, which will inspire me to play more!

Gina.. love that you could start so young. You have n amazing story. My story is I am not a professional. I was aiming that way once upon a time but life happened and my path changes. I started when I was 10 on a student Artley. That goes back to 1969. My freshmen year it was recommended I get a step up. I ended up with a sterling Armstrong. Then life happened and I had to put my flute away for the next 20 years. Almost 25 years ago now I had the opportunity to join our church orchestra. I had my Armstrong serviced but knew I had outgrown it. I was luckily to end up with a Miyazawa Mc325 Rh. Today that is the 402. That was in 2001. It was already 10 years old. I was again in love with my flute. At this point of my life it is just for me. Two years ago I upgraded my head to the MX2 with a gold riser. What a difference that made! Again in love. This past year I had an opportunity to buy a new flute. I ended up with the Miyazawa Elite with the 958 silver and all the bells and whistles on it. The expression and colors I can make on the elite is wonderful. I was able to get it without the head joint since my was pretty new. One thing you also would have felt going from the 402 to an Elite is the difference the soldered tone holes make. They make everything so even when your playing. I just love it and feel like the flute almost plays itself. The high notes are effortless and almost always in tune and pretty! Still love my other one and decided to keep it. After all.. I have 8 grandchildren and a couple of them are interested in flute. Miyazawas with care last years and years!! One granddaughter can start next year. She will be amazing... At 8 she gets full tone out of the headjoint. Not that common for a beginner to do that. In time.. who knows.. she might end up with my Miyazawas. Best Wishes on your career! enjoyed your video..
This called me broke at 5 different flute levels lol I started flute on an Armstrong that my friend in highschool lent me. Flute required an elastic band around the trill key to keep it down (honestly, the elastic band was a good replacement for the spring; don't use rubber bands as this chemically binds with anything silver). Upgraded to a used King that sealed better and had all working keys. I actually studied on this flute in college because the professor was impressed how much I accomplished as a self-taught flautist. Two years into studying I upgraded to a used Jupiter 6000SE which has a .925 SS/Gold Plated HJ and SP mech (around $1000 flute I believe). It's since been discontinued. The flute is riddled with leaks and misalignments because of how worn it is. The gold is beginning to peel on the inside of the headjoint. I finally plan on upgrading to a full silver flute after playing on beginner flutes for my entire career. I am buying it brand new in the hopes that I don't have to deal with the issues of a previous owner's mistakes.
In a couple of weeks (August 24th to be exact), I will have been playing flute for 16 years. My evolution of flutes is very different; I started when I was almost 12 and on my 12th Birthday I got my first flute which was a used Selmer Bundy (It wasn’t very good) but I stayed with that flute until the end of my sophomore year of high school. The end of my sophomore year, I ended up getting a rent to own flute that was an Emerson (My parents couldn’t afford to buy me a better flute at the time). Then, the summer before my senior year of high school, my dad got me a Gemeinhardt 3OSB and I played on that until about two months before my undergrad senior recital when I got my current flute which is an Altus 1107 (This was four and a half years ago) and I love it. I’m hoping to upgrade my piccolo soon because my piccolo is basically a piccolo for a beginner which is a Gemeinhardt 4PMH.

Hi Gina. I love watching this flute video, and you have inspired me to get the Trevor James Virtuoso flute as my back up flute. I was originally looking at getting a Pearl 795 Elegance flute as my back up, but the Trevor James seems like a much better option. I play on an Altus 1107 flute, which is my main flute, and I absolutely love it xx

The little mermaid is my favorite Disney movie as well. Close second was Fantasia. I actually credit my love of classical music to Disney. I watched TLM and Fantasia so much its all I wanted to listen to for the longest time. I eventually played flute in middle school. I had a vintage Armstrong at the time. I regret it now but I sold it right after high school. Now in my 30s I have started learning again and I love it. Makes me so sad I ever quit in the first place. I have even started looking to buy the original flute model I had back in middle school. I found one but it needs a lot of love to work again. But I am just happy to have it. I play a Pearl now though.
Wow you sound very different on the Miyazawa 402 than the other flutes. It seemed the most clear while the other flutes have a little bit of the beefy tone.

Interesting video as usual! I just wonder if you can compare offset g with inline g, if possible at all. I know you mentioned you have small hands so it might not be a good idea for your health to play inline g for a long time, but there are many inline g models available on the market, especially pre-owned. So I thought inline g ones are certainly an option for many, and that leads to my question. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on playability and tone difference (I believe no difference) etc...
Great question. Honestly, as far as I know there is no sound difference at all. The only reason to choose inline is if it feels more comfortable for you. I'd recommend trying one out and seeing how it feels for you! I don't think there is any advantages one way or the other. Like you said, I chose offset because my hands are smaller and it's much more comfortable for me. I actually still have a bit of trouble reaching the G key and have a plug in that key haha. wait gina?!??!!? do your TJ virtuoso’s tenons get stuck together when you’re done playing it?? because mine do, and often leave a brassy color on the headjoint and part on the body where the footjoint goes. it’s so so problematic, because every month i’m at the shop getting it unstuck. i wondered if you ever had that same problem.
Hmm that’s super weird. I’ve never had that happen and I have had mine for a bit now... make sure to use a micro-fiber cloth to clean all the tenons after each time you play it. That will most likely do the trick!
