I played a silver piccolo on the marching field and outside events, a wooden piccolo strictly for indoor events. Here in Texas, the temperature and humidity is hard on any instrument that is made out of wood.

I love this!! I am actually saving up for a better piccolo and one of my favorites is your current piccolo which I tried at the 2020 Mid-South Convention ( Shortly before COVID hit), I also like some of the Hammig piccolos, and I tried a couple of Bulgheroni piccolos that I liked and this video helps a lot! Thanks Gina!!!

When I first saw your other videos, I thought your flute embouchure resembled a piccolo embouchure. It looks very concentrated. I've since seen your offset embouchure video, and didn't even realize that that was why I thought it looked concentrated. I was wondering with your embouchure, how do you do a breathier, more hollow sound? I've heard the two schools of thought regarding piccolo to flute. Some people think the embouchure should be the same; some think the embouchure should be adjusted and changed. I was wondering what your opinions on this are.

My daughter is graduating from high school. She has played the flute for years and uses my Yamaha flute that I got years ago. Still great! She recently learned to play the piccolo at the request of the band director and he gave her a school piccolo to use. She really enjoys the piccolo and would like to have her own to bring to college. She knows she can play her flute at college but isn’t sure if there is a need for piccolo players, so I’m not sure how much she will really use it. I’d like to get her a quality instrument but not spend a fortune. What would you recommend? She needs something better than a starter piccolo. Thanks for your help!

Great question! At least for me, I definitely needed a piccolo in college. Let me know what budget you’re looking at so I can give you some ideas that would work for you! Off the bat, I would look at the Burkart Resona - that is the equivalent to the one I had and it served me really well! I would also suggest your daughter doing a trial to help her find the exact one that is best for her 😊

@@GinaLuciani Thanks so much for your quick response! Are there any decent piccolos for under $2,000?

My son plays the flute at marching band. He has Yamaha flute now. He wants to have the second instrument as piccolo. and I have small budget as $500-800. I have no idea for it and I don’t any information for it. Can you recommend a better piccolo? I would like to buy it for my son.

How long has he been playing flute? And does the school not have a piccolo? Usually it’s best to use a school one or a really really cheap one first so he can get used to playing it first, and then with experience look into buying one. I’ve been playing piccolo for marching band/concert band for 2.5 years now (I’m the only piccolo player in my school) and since I’m near graduation and want to continue playing into college, only now am I looking into buying one 😅 granted, I had to teach myself how to play the piccolo and the school ones at my school sucked, it’s best to start small and then if he sticks with it, work his way up slowly. You don’t want to spend $+300 on an instrument and have him not like it (personally I come from a poorer family, we didn’t have the money to do that but if you do then you could!!) it all just depends on what he wants

Is it normal for you to not be able to put your head joint into your piccolo?? Mine was only $80(Slade piccolo) and I cannot put it in it but whenever my band director puts together her own personal piccolo it goes in fine. I think mine is just a crappy one tbh

I am guy with large hands as I am 6ft 2inches tall. Can I still play a picallo with the fingering and spaces between the holes? They look so beautiful especially the ones with a black head. Thanks.

Hello, I kinda had the same doubts before getting a picc - being 5'8" myself - I would say, the best thing to do would be trying the piccolo you're after, on your own and do what feels right for you. Everyone will be very different from one another so it really is a personal choice and trial to decide for an instrument. I didn't get to try my own flute before buying, but I did try my current picc before buying. In regards to large hands on a small instrument, my advice would be: curve your fingers more than you think you have too - don't hurt yourself tho! hope his helps, somehow
